Did you know United Methodists have an official channel of giving called The Advance?
The Advance is an accountable, voluntary giving platform that supports the worldwide mission of The United
Methodist Church. We sometimes reference our voluntary giving as “second-mile giving.” Through The Ad-
vance, United Methodist Annual Conferences, districts, local churches, and organizations, as well as individu-
als and families, may choose to support over 600 mission programs or 300 mission personnel with financial
gifts. The Advance for Christ and His Church was the name of the petition created by the General Conference
that established The Advance in 1948. The Advance was voted as a permanent channel of giving in 1956.
ABOUT THE ADVANCE
The Advance is an accountable, voluntary giving platform that supports the worldwide mission of The United
Methodist Church. The Advance channel ensures 100% of each gift reaches its intended mission or ministry.
You decide which program or ministry to support through The Advance platform. The purpose of The Ad-
vance is to: 1) be an educational tool connecting with the ministries being established around the world; 2) be
an evangelical vehicle to rebuild and expand faith communities and churches; and 3) provide a safe channel to
send aid to those in need and other displaced and hurting people. The Advance work is managed through the
General Board of Global Ministries.
Dear Friends,
As I write this, the heat wave has begun. They say it’s going to be the longest heat wave
in recorded Iowa history. Make sure to check on your friends and neighbors, to make sure
they’re safe, have water, and are relatively cool. If they don’t have an air conditioner, and
you do, invite them in for a spell.
As we anticipate a hot August, there’s something I want to talk about, in addition to the
wonderful B.L.E.S.S. program, and the outdoor service on August 18 (see page 9).
I want to let you know that there will be a sermon series for the four weeks of August,
plus Labor Day weekend. As in the past, August has been a time where we look at movies
and how, within Scripture, we can see some of the lessons learned in the movies. This
August the series will be looking at “Star Wars” for what we see how God sees us through
Scripture. A few of the weekly themes will be on Hope, Persistence, Disappointment and
Joy. We will be focusing on the first three Star Wars movies ever
released.
We will have free showings in the Greenhouse in the basement for
those who’ve not seen them a long, long, time ago, in a galaxy far,
far away.
Our first movie “A New Hope” will be on Sunday night, July 28 at
5pm. Popcorn and pop will be provided.
God Bless You!
Phil Webb

We have an outstanding staff assembled to help with our sixteenth annual English
Language Camp which will be held every morning on August 5th through August 9th.
Students entering kindergarten through fourth grade this fall are eligible to attend. The theme this year is
Blast From the Past. The program includes Bible stories and also emphasizes experiential learning. Many
field trips have been planned. We’ll visit the Harker House, swim and canoe on Storm Lake, visit the Prairie
Heritage Center, and the Buena Vista County museum - all this while exploring the English language in fun
and unique ways. Information fliers and registration forms for English Language Camp are available in the
church office. If you know of students who would benefit from this program please make sure they get an
information sheet and a registration form.
Each day at English Language Camp begins with a hot breakfast. We are looking for someone to help Trish
Hansen in the kitchen preparing breakfast each day. If you are interested in this ministry please talk to Joan
Rude. To help lower the cost of this program we are asking for food donations. There is a bulletin board by
the handicap door entrance with food items listed. If you want to help with this ministry take the note with the
item you’ll furnish and bring that item to the Fellowship Hall kitchen before August 5th. Refrigerated items
can be left in the black refrigerator in Fellowship Hall. Thanks for helping. Below is the list if needed items:

Cupola
Cupolas were placed on top of structures to
help admit day time lighting and to help
with ventilation. At one time our church
had a cupola on top of the roof. It ap-
peared to be in the form of a circle with an
open space just below the cover and had
sides of tin rising from the roof up to the
gap. Some felt that the cupola was left
open to help let the ‘hot air’ escape.
There would have been a screen at the bot-
tom opening into the church to prevent en-
try of birds into the sanctuary. However, if
the screen broke or a hole appeared, the
birds did find their way into the church.
Once the birds got inside, they had to find
their own way out. This provided entertainment during church when the children, and maybe adults, would
watch the birds fly around. Harold Geisinger remembers going to his Sunday School class after church and
the kids would compare their observations of the birds’ activities and flight patterns.
The ministers were more challenged to keep everyone’s attention having to compete with this aviation activi-
ty. It did help keep the kids quiet.
When the church was remodeled and work done on the roof, the cupola was removed.

tice him to leave his own fast-paced, win-at-all-costs mindset.

readers to take God at his word, believe His promises and live fuller lives, discovering the
difference between believing IN God and believing God.
