The Monthly Messenger

FEBRUARY 2018

Dalton United Methodist

Church

With Valentine’s

Day coming soon,

think for a moment of

the many ways we talk

about love…

Love is ____

A. a warm fuzzy feeling

B. a tingling sensation

you get when you're

with a particular

person

C. an irresistible

attraction between two

people

D. the feeling you get

when you know you

are accepted

unconditionally

E. when you're with

someone you love,

or who loves you,

you no longer feel

lonely

F. You can't describe

love, you just know

when it's there.

when Jesus said,

“Love your neighbor.”

The Samaritan put

love into action and we

should, too.

Sooo, when we

think about love being

a "verb", the greatest

demonstration is the

story of God sending

His only Son, and

Jesus giving His life for

our salvation. Now

that’s true love in

action…

God Bless,

Pastor Dave

Which did you

pick? In the Greek

there are multiple

words that are

translated as “love.”

However, each Greek

word actually stands for

different kinds of love.

But there's

another expression,

another way of thinking

of love that I want to

share. It's not original

with me, I'm sure

you've heard it before,

but I think it's based on

a Biblical

understanding - "Love

is a Verb". Love is

something you do.

When Jesus

called on His disciples

to love Him, He said "If

you love me, keep my

commandments." (John

14:15) He evidently

expected them to be

"doing" something.

Remember the

“Good Samaritan” story

A Note From The

Pastor...

The UMW met for a breakfast

meeting at the Time Out Café on

Saturday, January 20th. It was a

wonderful way to start the new year off getting together with our UMW

sisters. Starting the morning Susan McMullen gave the devotions about

unity. It was a perfect topic to show what the UMW is all about. That being working together all doing what we do best for the growth and success of the UMW.

Also during the meeting Joann

Watson explained her interpretation of

using Zen for her program booklet covers she designed. I looked up the definition of Zen and I discovered it was introduced into China in the 6th century and Japan in the 12th and is a

Japanese sect of

Mahayana Buddhism that aims at

enlightening by

direct innutrition through mediation. What does that mean? Joann said, “Zen has different ways of relieving stress.” Joann has chosen making

different designs and coloring them. She has created quite intricate designs and when finished they are extraordinarily beautiful. Joann created some for the UMW and passed them out that

morning. If you didn’t get one and would like to try your hand at coloring one, I am sure Joann would have some to share. Joann said she enjoys coloring them while watching TV and she said it does relieve stress.

Extra 2018 program booklets are on the table as you enter the sanctuary if you would like one. You will see Joann’s

creative Zen interpretation on the

News from the United Methodist Women

Page 6 The Monthly Messenger

cover. Inside the front cover Joann also put a Zen saying. Mine says, “Zen is

concentration on our usual daily

routine.” Mmmm deep thoughts about our everyday hum drum happenings.

When you read the new program

booklets, you will see the interesting year the UMW officers have in line for the ladies of the church.

On TUESDAY, FEBURARY 20 7:00 PM In the church fellowship hall, Joellen Fone will be speaking about FOSTER PARENTING. Come and learn more about foster parenting from

Joellen. She has lots of firsthand

information for us.

Some of the other highlights for the year will be in March. Brian Zeigler, an inspirational speaker, will be bringing the message. The time and place will be announced later.

On Tuesday, April 24 at 7:00PM in the Sanctuary the meeting title is

AUTISM AWARENESS and the speaker will be Addy Fletcher. She is a Parent Mentor of Ohio from Tri-County

Educational Services Center. She is a friend of Sharon Starling.

A special time for all ladies is on Saturday, May 12 at 2:00 PM there will be an ALL-DAUGHTER TEA (we are all daughters).

In July will be a fun time for all at an ICE CREAM SOCIAL at Ed and

Sharon Starling’s home on SUNDAY, JULY 22 AT 4:00 PM.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 22 AT 8:00 AM The UMW ladies will be

making vegetable soup for the Shut-ins.

Page 7: The Monthly Dalton United Methodist Messenger...2018/02/02  · The Monthly Messenger FEBRUARY 2018 Dalton United Methodist Church With Valentine’s Day coming soon, think for a moment

grows there. The poem teaches that when you let God’s blessing flow through you like the Jordan flows through the Sea of Galilee, you become productive and full of life.

One extreme of Christian thought says that you claim riches, and if you aren’t materially wealthy, you lack faith. The other extreme believes you should live in poverty. The correct

medium is to be a wise steward with all your possessions, time and talents while supporting your family, sharing with those in need and practicing moderation in all things. “For an overseer as God’s steward must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or violent or greedy for gain”. (Titus 1:7)

Be a fresh sea in 2018 enjoying the blessings God gives you while being a blessing to others. Pray that all

people will seek God first; trusting that He will meet their needs.

Issue 2 Page 7

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 23, AT 7:00 PM Will be craft night with Joann

Watson showing us clever ways to make holiday cards.

Rounding out the year will be the Fall Harvest Dinner on

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 4 FOLLOWING THE CHURCH SERVICE.

And of course on DECEMBER 1st the COOKIE WALK AND

LUNCHEON. One hint I have is that last year I baked my cookies early in the year at different times and froze them. Come

December they were

almost all done and it made the hustle and

bustle of the holiday

season much easier. I told you in the last newsletter the

officers would have a year you wouldn’t want to miss and I was right. Sounds like one great year!

One very important thing,

during the first meeting our new president, Bev McGinty, sent around a signup sheet for help at the meetings for someone to give devotions or to be hostesses. I know all the positions were not filled so if

anyone would like to help please talk to Bev. She would appreciate all the help and support anyone can give to make the year easier. There is that idea Susan

McMullen spoke about “UNITY”.

Some time ago I did devotions at

Bible Study about Two Seas. I would like to share this with you. Helen Steiner

Rices’s poem “A Key to Living is Giving”, compares the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea. The Sea of Galilee is fresh water and plants thrive. With no outlets, the Dead Sea is full of salt and nothing

Though we have

never yet seen God,

when we love each

other God lives in us,

and his love within us

grows ever

stronger. (1 John 4:12 TLB)

The Monthly Messenger Page 8

Proverbs 11:24 says: one gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want.

The poem by Helen Steiner Rice which I mentioned I’d like to

share also:

A very favorite story of mine

Is about two seas in Palestine

One is a sparkling sapphire jewel,

Its waters are clean and clear and cool,

Along its shores children play

And travelers seek it on their way,

And nature gives so lavishly

Her choicest gems to the Galilee.

But to the south the Jordan flows

Into a sea where nothing grows,

No splash of fish, no singing bird,

No children's laughter is ever heard,

The air hangs heavy all around

And nature shuns this barren ground.

Both seas receive the Jordan's flow,

The water is just the same, we know,

But one of the seas, like liquid sun,

Can warm the hearts of everyone,

While farther south another sea

Is dead and dark and miserly.

It takes each drop the Jordan brings

And to each drop it fiercely clings.

It hoards and holds the Jordan's waves

Until like shackled, captured slaves

The fresh, clear Jordan turns to salt

And dies within the Dead Sea's vault.

But the Jordan flows on rapturously

As it enters and leaves the Galilee,

For every drop that the Jordan gives

Becomes a laughing wave that lives

For the Galilee gives back each drop,

Its waters flow and never stop.

And in the laughing, living sea

That takes and gives so generously

We find the way to Life and Living

Is not in Keeping, But in Giving!

Yes, there are two Palestinian seas

And mankind is fashioned after these!

Some good words for the New Year to

Don’t forget to sign up for

Devotions or refreshments for a UMW

Meeting!

Sign-up sheet is on the Office Door!

Life-giving waters will flow out from

Jerusalem, half toward the Dead Sea, and half toward the

Mediterranean, flowing continuously both in

winter and in summer.

(Zechariah 14:8 TLB)
