Itrsquos that time of year again Itrsquos the time of year when we unite or divide and remember why some of us donrsquot like some other people Itrsquos the time when stand up scream and yell when the ones we

like do something that gives them an advantage over the people that we donrsquot like We alter our lives and personal schedules for such events and some spend incredible resources to participate in this carnival and spectacle that we call ldquoFOOTBALL SEASONrdquo

I will be wrapped up in this football season as much as anyone Why Because that is the case every year Itrsquos a ritual Itrsquos something we do Itrsquos part of who we are and where we live Right now this nation is as divided as ever the most in my lifetime Just a few weeks ago all that were able came together forgot about the issues of the day forgot the divisions and focused on something that was not of this world We traveled to mountains stadiums strange parking lots We watched it on TV and changed routines It was the solar eclipse of 2017 For a few moments we forgot our problems our issues and our ailments We came together as one people who also shared this with others from around the world For a few moments we were united as one

Romans 124-5 says that ldquoFor as in one body we have many members and the members do not all have the same function So we though many are one body in Christ and individually members one of anotherrdquo All of us bring something different to the Church the body of Christ This month we will be focusing on the gifts that God has given to each one of us and how we can bring that to the Church and the furthering of His kingdom here on earth

Christ came for all not just a few or some special group He came for everyone Though we are all unique in our own way we are still one in the Body of Christ Consider what your gifts talents and abilities are and how God can use them to His glory

Soup Kitchen Our Daily Bread at Athens FBC

Our wonderful volun-teers served 144 plates of food to our apprecia-tive guests on August 24 at Athens First Bap-tist Church Brenda Abdel-Hafez Greg Palm-er Cleo Ward Bill amp Shirley McClure Dave English Wanda Coley and Katherine Phelps prepared and served delicious green beans macaroni and cheese sausage ham bread canned fruit and fresh bananas It is such a joy to participate in this ministry If you are interested in serving on the fourth Thursday of each month contact Brenda Abdel-Hafez We will serve again September 28 We will serve at Oconee Street UMC in September and October while Athens First Baptist kitch-en area is being renovated This ministry is such a blessing to all that come for meals

Supper ClubSupper Club is on the move again We will go on our first adventure (af-ter summer break) on Saturday Septem-ber 9 Meet at the FLC 5pm to join your fellow parishioners on what is sure to be an evening of great fellowship and food A desti-nation has yet to be determined so think of where you would like to go and we will decide when we meet Remember you may learn something new about someone you thought you knew Until we eat again

Condolences

The members of Colbert United Methodist Church extend our sincerest condelences to Melvin and Ruth Johnson on the passing of their grandson Cameron Johnson and to Jack and Lois Scaffe on the passing of Jackrsquos brother Joe Scaffe Our prayers are with you May God bless you and keep you and bring you and your families peace in the coming days

New Adult Sunday School ClassA new adult Sunday school class called GAP (Godrsquos Active People) begins September 10 in the Family Life Center at 10am If you do not currently participate in a class please join us Fourteen books were handed out on Sunday August 27 If you would like to get a book let Brenda Abdel-Hafez know at 706-247-5412

Brookshire ClassThe theme for our fall lessons is ldquoCovenants With Godrdquo with the first four studies teaching us the ldquoSigns of Godrsquos Covenantrdquo These cove-nants are promises God made to us and rec-ognizing these promises sets us apart as Godrsquos people Come join us as we read study and discuss the Word of God

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the hur-ricane victims and also we pray for the volun-teers that are traveling to give aid to them Our sympathy is extended to the family of Joe Scaffe Jackrsquos brother and to Cameron Johnson Ruthrsquos grandson We pray for peace for all family mem-bers Wayne Craig continues with treatment for his cancer and seems to be having more good days Harold Gaulding fell recently which caus-es him to have a lot of trouble getting up and down There seem to be no broken bones but lots of bruises and strained muscles

Thelma Morris celebrated her 91st birthday recently and we are so happy to see her able to come back to church We congratulate Judy and

Tal Martin in the celebration of their 51st wedding anniversary We hope that they have at least 51 more

We have set the date for our 3rd annual Advent Market for November 11 Join us as we make plans for this wonderful event Also if you know of someone who is a crafter that would like to set up a table let us know

We have begun to try to visit a few shut ins each month If you know of someone that needs a short visit please let a UMW member know

UMMThere will be a pancake amp eggs supper meeting of the men of our church on Mon-day Sept 25 at 6pm in the FLC All of the men are invited We have many new men including our Pastor Michael and we need to get acquainted and get to know each other We will discuss our famous Peanut Fund-raiser and how we will use the money raised for our church Please come and bring $5 for the meal

1 Check the Official Church Calendar (located in the church office in the FLC) to see if the room(s) or van is available for the day(s) you want to reserve and use them Please note that the church main-tains a list of approved drivers please see Pastor Megan for more information

2 Read the building usage policy located in the church office and on the bulletin board in the back hall of the church

3 Fill out a Reservation Form located online or in the church office and return it to Pastor Megan4 Pay any necessary deposit or usage fee (preferably by check) to the church Trustees will determine

and assess any damage fees as necessary5 After receipt of payment (if necessary) Pastor Megan will confirm your reservation and write your

reservation on the Official Church Calendar

Official Church CalendarNeed to reserve church spaces or van for an event The Official Church Calendar is maintained by Pastor Megan If you need to use the old fellowship hall Family Life Center Sunday School rooms sanctuary or church van please follow these easy steps

1 Check the Official Church Calendar (located in the church office in the FLC) to see if the room(s) or van is available for the day(s) you want to reserve and use them Please note that the church main-tains a list of approved drivers please see Pastor Megan for more information

2 Read the building usage policy located in the church office and on the bulletin board in the back hall of the church

3 Fill out a Reservation Form located online or in the church office and return it to Pastor Megan4 Pay any necessary deposit or usage fee (preferably by check) to the church Trustees will determine

and assess any damage fees as necessary5 After receipt of payment (if necessary) Pastor Megan will confirm your reservation and write your

reservation on the Official Church Calendar

This policy was adopted by the Church Council on Jan 9 2011
