Welcome to the 2009 Best of Nevada County publication. The Union Newspaper is honored to present this

unique opportunity to recognize the people, businesses and places in our community who make it a wonderful place to live, work and play!

For several days in January, we printed our Best of Nevada County 2009 ballot in the newspaper asking you — our loyal readers — to tell us your favorites. To ensure the integrity of the voting process, ballots were sealed, sent to a contracted company and tabulated off-site. Duplicates, reproductions and other ballots not meeting the strict published criteria were excluded.

This year, just like the past, the response from the community was outstanding; demonstrating how important each of these businesses that are honored throughout the publication are to Nevada County. As our county has flourished, so has community interest and the title of “The Best” has become increasingly competitive. Although we do have some repeat winners, we would like to welcome those who have risen to the top for the first time! Each recipient contributes to the charm of our community.

NORTHERN SIERRA PROPANE, INC. has served grass Valley and Nevada County customers since January of 1990 from

their office and shop located at 13120 John Bauer Avenue (near the airport). Edward (Ed) Rogers started delivering propane from a small office using one delivery truck, and has grown his business (four trucks) using the motto “Fast, Prompt & Reliable Service.”

Northern Sierra Propane (NSP) has expanded into Placer and yuba counties, and now serves over three thousand customers using sixteen employees to assure their accounts are well and timely served. NSP measures its success in volume (gallons) sales, and is now delivering in excess of 1,500,000 gallons to their friends in their operating area.

Service is the key to both the growth and success of NSP, and in addition to their base product (propane) they supply and install tanks to contain the product at customer sites. deliveries are scheduled to assure product is available timely, and every effort is maintained to keep the cost of product in line with the current economy. An even payment program is in place, which allows

Propane is supplied for heating, water heating, and other applications using gas. Essentially it is classified as used beyond the limits of natural gas service, and is both clean and temperature controlled.

The office is open Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00am and 5:00pm. However, telephone service is twenty four hours a day to assure timely service. Every employee is dedicated to providing our customers with their propane needs and related service in a prompt and friendly manner.

The year was 1960 when two brothers, King and Pete Aguilar opened the doors of A&A Air Conditioning

husband and wife team, Tony and Lila Reyna. 2010 marks the 16th anniversary for gold Country Kuk Sool Won. Nevada County’s premiere family arts center attributes its success to serving the community, building lasting relationships, and providing the finest quality martial arts training.

Kuk Sool Won is a traditional Korean martial art. This comprehensive system covers an extensive variety of techniques and martial arts methods, but it is not merely concerned with the physical methods of physical self-defense. Kuk Sool Won includes the study of healing techniques, the development of internal power, and physical conditioning. The three most important aspects of Kuk Sool Won training are etiquette, patience, and practice.

Chief instructor Tony Reyna states, “The popularity of martial arts has grown dramatically in recent years. Parents and families are seeking ways to slow down in today’s fast paced world, and martial arts practice is a wonderful way to achieve a healthier body, mind, and way of life. Martial arts is a great way for kids to get

some exercise. Physical benefits include: increased flexibility and strength, enhanced coordination, motor skill development, aerobic conditioning, and body toning.

In addition to the physical benefits of martial arts, mental powers of concentration, self-discipline, and self-control will significantly improve. Through consistent training and progress, parents often tell us of big improvements in their child’s self-confidence and self-esteem. Memory skills are enhanced through repetition training. Students develop “Jung Shin” a Korean word meaning, “total focus of the mind and spirit on what you are doing in a given moment”. This concept may then be applied to schoolwork, sports, hobbies, career and family.”

Chief Instructor Tony Reyna has studied and taught Kuk Sool Won for 29 years and is currently testing for sixth-degree black belt. Lila Reyna is currently testing for third-degree Black Belt, specializing in women’s self-defense instruction and is award-winning author of “Quiet Mind, Warrior Spirit.”

Art’s Cedar Ridge gas and Automotive Service was established in April 1985 and for the last 25 years the co-

owners, Art Harris and Bonnie Bridge, have been dedicated to the community and their customers. There has never been a time when a friend or neighbor was in need of fuel or a repair on their vehicle and Art or Bonnie didn’t come through for them.

Art Harris was born in Tennessee. He is one of 12 children who grew up on a farm where hard work and honesty is an everyday occurrence. After graduating from high school, Art joined the u.S. Navy where he served for two years in Vietnam. Art then came to grass Valley and has been a big part of the community ever since.

Bonnie Bridge was born in Lindsay and moved to the area in 1977, later meeting Art in 1979. They became partners in 1985. Bonnie is also a huge part of our local community and understands the value of customers. She was part owner of

the Holbrooke Hotel for 10 years and has sold real estate for the past 32 years with Paul Law Realty.
