From the Pastor

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. Returning to In-Person Worship at Trinity?

Dearly Beloved of Trinity Lutheran Church,

“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples—if you have love for one another.”--John 13:35

On Sunday, March 8th—the last Sunday we met in-person together--I did three things I long to do again: I spent the morning at Trinity in Bible study, worship, and coffee hour. After church I visited a nursing home and a hospital to visit our members there and distribute Holy Communion. In the afternoon I attended a potluck dinner with 4 other families and their children.

In the almost 3 months since that day, so much in our world has changed. These activities that seemed so normal in March now strike us as risky, if not even foolish. Over the last 3 months, millions around the world have been sickened, and 100,000 of our fellow Americans have died. Our congregation has had numerous members and friends who have tested positive for COVID-19, and cruelly perished from this disease. These past 3 months have changed the world, and all our lives. I grieve the loss of our old “normal life” with you.

Amidst this tragedy, Trinity has remained OPEN. We have held worship over Facebook Live for 11 Sundays, and broadcast roughly 100+ Sunday School classes, Scripture meditations, Bible Studies, concerts, morning prayers, vespers, compline services, etc., reaching the vast majority of our members, and thousands more in a larger online flock. You have been there for each other. We have prayed with the families of those who have lost loved ones to COVID-19. We have supported our members who are in need. We have reached out to partner with local food shelves and food banks. We have kept our office functioning, and our building maintained and in good repair. Our in-person activities have been temporarily suspended, but Trinity has never closed for a minute. We have shown in these days that we are truly Christ’s disciples by continuing to love one another.

As we look towards gathering together again for in-person, indoor worship there are numerous factors to consider:

1. Federal, State of Connecticut, and City of New Haven governmental regulations. 2. Guidelines from the New England Synod and our larger ELCA denomination 3. Risk Control guidelines from our insurer, Church Mutual Insurance 4. Our Christian Faith and our loving care for our Church family

As of this writing on Memorial Day, neither the State of Connecticut nor the City of New Haven Health Department have given the go-ahead for in-person, indoor worship to return. The New England Synod of the ELCA has also asked all of its congregations to refrain from resuming in-person worship for now. We will abide by these directives.

But what would in-person, indoor worship look like, if these governmental regulations changed and we did resume in-person worship, inside the building at Trinity?

Following CDC, ELCA, and Church Mutual Insurance guidelines for in-person, indoor worship there would be:

Page 3: The Trinity Window – June 2020 · Holy Trinity falls on June 7. Traditionally it is the "last hurrah" of our Easter worship, before the long, quiet, hot summer begins. This year

1. NO Hymns, Congregational Singing, or Choir 2. NO Speaking or Out-loud praying, e.g. the Lord’s Prayer 3. NO Children, Children’s Sermon, Sunday School, or Nursery Care 4. NO Seniors aged 60+ present, or any person with a health condition 5. NO handshakes, hugs, or passing of the peace 6. NO eating or drinking in a coffee hour or potluck 7. NO being closer than 6’ from others 8. NO Holy Communion received in any kind 9. NO assisting ministers sharing space at the altar 10. NO using hymnals, Bibles, or bulletins 11. NO passing the Offering Plate 12. NO congregating before or after worship 13. NO passing others when entering or exiting 14. NO entrance without a facemask and temperature check 15. NO use of the restroom without continuous cleaning

It’s hard for me to imagine Trinity looking like this, or what it would feel like. Who could come, and would you want to?!

So in consultation with Pat Sundermann, our Church Council President, I see three main ways for us to begin a “new normal” for Trinity this summer:

1. Online worship via Facebook Live will continue as our main means of gathering together. Imperfect as it is, it is safe, accessible, and allows us to hear God’s Word.

2. Sometime in the next several weeks I hope that we can begin streaming online Sunday worship from the sanctuary of Trinity. The accompaniment of our organ and the familiar sight of our beautiful sanctuary should be an encouragement for us all. The congregation would be limited to myself and the organist.

3. The City of New Haven has issued guidelines for “Drive-In Church Services.” I hope we can use these guidelines to gather safely for our own occasional Drive-In Service, in the parking lot across from Trinity. There would be no access to the building available, but instead we’d worship from our closed-up cars, with audio broadcast to the parking lot by a low-power FM radio transmitter. This service would also be streamed online, with the elderly and those more vulnerable strongly encouraged to stay home and participate online.

The old hymn says, “They’ll know we are Christians by our love,” based on Jesus’ words from John 13:35, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples—if you have love for one another.” When people look at Trinity, they’ve always seen the love we have for each other and for our God. These days that love will look a little different—it will look like gathering online, or staying in our cars, so that we can lovingly protect one another, our families, our vulnerable ones, our neighbors, and our Church family. With faith towards God, and with fervent love towards one another, this summer we will begin this “new normal” at Trinity.

Yours in Christ, Pastor Ryan Mills+

Sunday School Challenge Fund Raisers

Alleluia! From the Sunday School. During the recent church closure our students have been studying Bible stories online. When we were last in church they were decorating small blackboards to raise enough more money to pay for 10 water filtration systems through the Reach Dalit program. They were also considering how they could help raise money for Operation Christmas Child through the Palm Sunday bake sale. Unable to raise funds at church, I have challenged them each to do activities at home for which they can ask for donations for their two charities. There are approximately 20 challenges for the students which take at least 3 minutes each to complete. For example: Making a palm leaf and using it in a parade at home on Palm Sunday. Another day was to do jumping jacks for 3 minutes. They are recording their activities on a personal chart. I have promised to donate money for each of their completed challenges while another person has donated a lump sum for their overall efforts. The total amount collected will be given equally to Reach Dalit and OCC. The students will bring their completed charts to church when we return there and will be available to accept donations from members and friends. Anyone who wishes to donate in advance can send their donations to Trinity earmarked for the Sunday school charities. Checks should be made out to the Trinity Lutheran Church Women. Their Bible study and challenge videos are online on Trinity’s Facebook Page in the Video and the Post sections for anyone interested in glimpsing some of our students acting out their faith.

Commencement 2020 Congratulations to Erik Sundermann who received his Master of Science Degree in Education on May 15, 2020. With no in person commencement Erik received a congratulatory email from Fitchburg State University. Congratulations to Brian Peterson and Alex Smith who received Master of Divinity degrees from Yale Divinity School on May 18, 2020. YDS did do an online commencement with photos. Brian will return to YDS in the fall to continue his studies for a Master of Sacred Theology Degree. Alex is now working for a community purchasing alliance in Washington, DC. Best wishes to all our graduates, Trinity is proud of your accomplishments!

Church Closing

All houses of worship have been asked to close during the Covid 19 pandemic. Trinity is following those wishes. When we can gather to worship together again a churchwide email will go out. You can go to Trinity’s Facebook page to join in Bible Studies, Evening Compline, Morning Prayer, and Worship with Pastor Mills.

VBS Cancelled Trinity has cancelled Vacation Bible School for this summer. We all know it is in the best interest of the children and volunteers. We are sure everyone will miss the heat and humidity!

Time for a Laugh A kindergarten teacher was observing her classroom of children while they were drawing. She walked around to look at the artwork. As she got to one little girl who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was. The girl replied, “I’m drawing a picture of God.” The teacher paused and said, “But no one knows what God looks like.” Without missing a beat, or looking up from her drawing the girl replied. “They will in a minute.”

For such a time as this (Esther 4:14) - COVID-19 Update Page 1 of 2 For Immediate Release

For such a time as this (Esther 4:14)

(New York City - May 2020). The ambulances are arriving. Seafarers International House (SIH) is helping in the fight for people’s lives one bed at a time. More beds used by recovering COVID-19 patients at Seafarers International House today mean more beds available for desperately ill COVID-19 patents in NYC hospitals.

Located within the epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak in the United States, SIH has made adjustments to its usual mission of welcoming seafarers and immigrants to the guesthouse in Manhattan. In mid-April the board of directors of SIH felt compelled to continue the mission of hospitality by temporarily making the guesthouse available to people in our local community who are recuperating from the virus. Therefore, SIH has partnered with “Comunilife” – another not-for-profit agency that provides respite care for displaced hospital patients. SIH plans to resume regular guesthouse operations starting July 30, the date of the major fundraiser, the Setting the Course Banquet. (Book your room or reserve your ticket now at https://www.sihnyc.org).

As a mission that has responded to God’s call for over 147 years to welcome the displaced, Seafarers International House feels like it is being called anew during these desperate hours “for such a time as this” (Esther 4:14) to respond to the pandemic medical needs right in SIH’s neighborhood.

At the same time, SIH continues to provide housing to seafarers and asylees, but in another location in Manhattan, so that they don’t risk mingling with COVID-19 patients in the guesthouse. Some detention centers are releasing asylum seekers, who are then at risk of facing homelessness. With travel restrictions and mandatory quarantine, many seafarers are stranded not being able to fly to foreign ports to join their ships. The “re-located SIH guesthouse” at a mid-town hotel insures rooms for both asylees and seafarers during this crisis.

Page 9: The Trinity Window – June 2020 · Holy Trinity falls on June 7. Traditionally it is the "last hurrah" of our Easter worship, before the long, quiet, hot summer begins. This year

For such a time as this (Esther 4:14) - COVID-19 Update Page 2 of 2 Meanwhile, in the ports, SIH carries out its port mission to assist seafarers. Many face to face ship visits are not being allowed now, but fortunately some of SIH’s port chaplains can continue boarding ships, using PPE, and safely providing “gangway ministry” as well as electronic communication to spiritually and practically assist exhausted seafarers, who are so vital in maintaining our supply chains, especially during this time of global interruption.

To care for mariners who feel lonely out at sea or are in different time zones, SIH is working with the International Christian Maritime Association to provide live chats with a chaplain (https://www.sihnyc.org/chat-with-a-chaplain).

For such a time as this, asylum seekers released from detention and seafarers on ships or stranded in New York City, find devoted SIH staff members caring for their immediate needs in the ports and in Manhattan. And, the SIH guesthouse now provides beds to those community members recuperating from COVID-19.

Who we are: Seafarers International House (SIH) is the Lutheran response to the urgent needs of vulnerable seafarers and immigrants.

A social ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church (ELCA) in America, primarily related to the Metropolitan New York Synod of the ELCA, Seafarers International House offers pastoral care, hospitality, social assistance, and advocacy to a multi-national and multi-faith community in maritime ports on the Eastern Seaboard (Baltimore, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, and Philadelphia), and in an 84-room Guesthouse in New York City. In 2019, SIH served a total of 38,225 people. This included visiting 18,353 and transporting 10,114 seafarers. SIH also provided 5,214 lodging nights and social services to seafarers (218), asylum seekers (36), and domestic violence, human trafficking, and local disaster survivors (68). These figures do not include regular travelers, who lodge at SIH and in regular times provide income to support the mission.

For more details, to make a reservation at the SIH guesthouse starting July 30, or to support this ministry please visit www.sihnyc.org or send an email to [email protected]. If you are a seafarer in need of accommodation in Manhattan, please also reach out to at [email protected] or call (917) 284-2933.

STAY SAFE - WITH VIDEO OR IN-PERSON VISITS

In the best of times and in the most challenging times, we are here to help you stay safe and stay healthy.Urgent medical care needs don’t stop for COVID-19, and your health is too important to postpone necessary care. That’s why we have taken extra precautions to ensure your safety so you can receive the care you need from our health experts.

While some patients have chosen to receive their care through video visits (also called virtual visits), more of our patients are returning to our offices because in many cases, it’s the best way to get the care they need. We want you to get the best care possible and feel confident that you will be safe when using our services. Griffin Health has implemented infection control procedures across all facilities. When you come to our offices, you’ll notice we’re doing things differently, more specifically:

All patients are pre-screened by phone before scheduling a visit.

We have designated COVID-19 care centers. Patients that have any COVID-19 symptoms will only be seen in designated offices or during special hours.

All appointments include COVID-19 screenings. All patients and visitors are screened for COVID-19 symptoms and must have their temperature taken during their appointment.

Our caregivers are checked daily. All medical providers and staff members are evaluated for any COVID-19 symptoms and have their temperatures checked daily.

Masks are mandatory. Masks are worn by all patients, visitors, medical providers, and staff members at all times.

Physical distancing is observed. Patients are carefully scheduled to minimize time in the waiting room and other common areas in our office. Seats in common areas are spaced at least six feet apart.

We have enhanced cleaning. Throughout the day and in between each visit, exam rooms and other key areas are rigorously disinfected. Every office and facility is professionally cleaned each night.

We are taking additional protective measures. Medical providers and staff consistently follow stringent hand-hygiene protocols before and after every patient encounter, as well as using personal protective equipment.

WE’RE HERE FOR YOU

STAY SAFE, STAY HEALTHY DURING COVID-19

STAY HEALTHY – DON’T DELAY CAREIf it’s time for your annual check-up, for preventive tests like mammograms and colonoscopies, or for diagnostic procedures like a cardiac stress test, your health is too important to postpone necessary care.Delaying care can lead to complications and advanced stages of disease. Waiting can make medical issues worse and result in long-term damage that could have been avoided. If you suffer from a chronic disease such as diabetes, hypertension, or asthma, it is essential for you to maintain your regular care and continue taking your medication.

EMERGENCIES DON’T STOP FOR COVID-19You may think it’s risky to seek medical care with COVID-19 in the community, but waiting too long to get help for medical issues or life-threatening conditions can be far more dangerous than COVID-19.

If you experience symptoms or a change in your health, please contact us even if you don’t think your symptoms are urgent. We are here to help and can discuss the best way to get the care you need.

If you are experiencing other more serious symptoms, like difficulty breathing or pain in the chest or abdomen, call 911 immediately. Just as our office has taken steps to ensure your safety, Griffin Hospital has done the same and is ready to take care of anyone needing emergency and urgent care.

We are here for you, and we will get through this together.
