The complaint was signed by the other polling officers, Lakshman, Parimalan, Madhu Rani and Madan Gopal. Trouble seems to have begun when Army officer K V Prasad entered the polling station, saying his name was on the voters’ list. When Kav- erappa answered in Kannada, Prasad abused him for answering in Kannada. According to the com- plaint, Prasad also threatened to shoot him down. The polling officers requested the election com- missioner to initiate action against Prasad and provide them protection. MONEY CONFISCATED Police resorted to a lathicharge at Kottigepalya and Ejipura, when members of the Congress and JD(S) crossed the 100-metre limit. In RT Nagar, JD(S) members confiscated Rs 88,000 and ink remover from a relative of transport minister R Ashoka. He was handed over to the police, but no case was reg- istered. In another incident, a complaint was filed by a JD(S) worker that two relatives of Ashoka had assaulted him. Case is yet to be filed. PETTY INCIDENTS MAR POLL PEACE TEAM TOI B arring stray clashes be- tween party support- ers and a statue being displaced, the BBMP election passed off peacefully. In the morning, a statue of Dr B R Ambedkar at Nan- jappa Circle in Akki Thim- manahalli was found dis- placed from the platform. Po- lice also resorted to a mild lathicharge in places like Kot- tigepalya and Ejipura. Six persons were arrested for try- ing to impersonate and cast fake votes at RT Nagar. Police commissioner Shankar Bidari said five cas- es have been registered and six persons arrested. In RT Na- gar, six persons tried to cast proxy votes and were caught. In two cases registered at Viveknagar and Wilson Gar- den, life-threat cases were registered. In Wilson Garden, five persons threatened Hanumanthaiah, while five others threatened Rajash- ekharaiah with dire conse- quences, while distributing the election slips, Bidari said. In Viveknagar, Congress candidate was allegedly man- handled by JD(S) workers when she was moving around the polling station. A com- plaint was registered against Mukunda, K Kumar, K Man- ju and Arun, Bidari said. STATUE DISPLACED Shanthinagar witnessed some tense moments when a statue of Dr B R Ambedkar was found displaced from the platform. The incident came to light at 9 am. Soon, a mob of over 200 gathered near the statue and staged a road- block. Senior police officers and BBMP commissioner Bharat Lal Meena rushed to the spot and pacified the ag- itating members. Polling officers had a tough time in the line of duty. “The government may pay us lat- er but without proper food, water and sanitation facility, it is very demoti- vating,” said an officer at K R Puram. With polling booths in government schools, the plight of students was ev- ident to the public. At Horamavu gov- ernment school, the flooring was dug up. Most schools had no bathrooms, with bad lighting and ventilation. The worst affected were the police and Home Guards. At Thanisandra, around 25 police personnel were sta- tioned at the polling booth. “It’s been three days of election duty. We haven’t been able to sleep well due to the mos- quito menace. We haven’t been given money for food,’’ said a polling official here. “I’m from Mandya and been post- ed for election duty here.
