Dear Church Family,

This week we have received informa(on from our Bishop and Cabinet reques(ng the

con(nua(on of the suspension of in-person worship un(l at least June 1 and prepara(ons for

reopening our church buildings. Enclosed is the le1er to the clergy and lay leader of each church.

Dear Friends,

The first several months of 2020 have been difficult as the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted

in sickness, death, unemployment and economic challenges of epic propor&ons in our state, na&on,

and world. The Cabinet’s and my hearts are heavy for all those who have been adversely affected by

the coronavirus.

Through it all, I am thankful for the crea&ve and sacrificial ways in which our clergy and laity

con&nue to be the church. In addi&on to pivo&ng from in-person to online worship services in order

to help fla,en the curve of coronavirus cases and deaths, North Alabama United Methodists are

reaching out to assist the increased number of persons in our churches and communi&es who are

dealing with unemployment, food insecurity, emo&onal isola&on and fear.

It has now been seven weeks since the Cabinet and I requested that our North Alabama

Conference United Methodist church suspend in-person worship services and other gatherings. A2er

much prayerful discernment and careful review of the data about reopening, we are extending our

request for suspension un&l at least June 1, at the earliest. When we reopen our church buildings, we

will con&nue to be guided by direc&ves from our federal, state and local government officials, and by

the recommenda&ons of health care professionals in the Centers for Disease Control and Preven&on

(CDC) and the Na&onal Ins&tute of Allergy and Infec&ous Disease.

In the mean&me there is much to do in preparing for reopening our church buildings. We

have developed the document “Do No Harm: Recommenda&ons for Reopening Our Church Buildings”

to assist local church leaders in decisions about when and how to reopen a2er our request for a

suspension expires. This resource emphasizes the importance of context in determining the specific

date for a congrega&on to reopen. Factors to consider include the congrega&on’s 1) demographics,

2) loca&on (how many COVID-19 cases are in its county? 3) size and 4) capacity to follow CDC

standards about sanita&on and social distancing. The document also includes guidelines for

reopening in a safe way.

Next week each District Superintendent will host town hall mee&ngs via Zoom to answer

ques&ons about markers that are important to reach in order to safely reopen our church buildings.

…I am grateful that North Alabama United Methodists have responded so beau&fully to the

Cabinet’s and my request for suspension of in-person worship services and gatherings during the

COVID-19 pandemic. Now we have the opportunity to further our posi&ve witness by con&nuing to

mi&gate the spread of the coronavirus through the careful way in which we reopen our church

buildings.

As always it is a privilege to serve as your bishop.

Blessings,

A New Normal?

I miss our Worship (me together on Sundays, our Celebrate Recovery

mee(ngs, and especially my sacred (me with our Youth. I found myself the other

day just throwing up my hands and spou(ng through clenched teeth, “I just want

everything to get back to normal!” Then again...as the old saying goes…

some(mes we must be careful what we ask for because we just may get it.

Now don’t misinterpret that last statement - we have a blessed church, an

incredible church family, and many amazing ministries. I just think God may be

revealing a new normal to us in all the recent events. Yes, the new normal may

involve face masks, gloves, and space between our chairs but what else is God

calling us to recognize. Perhaps the new normal will dispel the tainted human

condi(on of complacency; we some(mes just keep doing what we have been

doing because it is what we have been doing. Was it normal? The Israelites upon

approaching the Red Sea had a moment of fear overcome them when they

longed to go back to Pharaoh’s daily bread along with back-breaking labor to

avoid the mystery ahead. Beyond the God-parted Red Sea was a long suffering

path to the promised land and a daily belief much more sustaining than bread

alone. The Israelite slaves could have returned to “normal” but their faith

prevailed and they pressed on to a renewed life.

Ok, slow down...I’m not for a second rela(ng our previous church or faith

to that of the slaves in Egypt. I’m just going Forest Gump on simplis(c

spirituality...normal is as normal does. Let’s seek a new normal. Moreover let’s

not even be sa(sfied with normal. Think about it - 8 tracks were once the

normal. Blockbuster video was once normal. Jesus blew the doors off normal

during HIS days on this Earth so let’s keep that momentum going. There is no

new normal...there is renewal gained by growing in hardship and trus(ng God

that a promised land is just ahead. Maybe we need to consider abnormal and

just be weirdly on fire for Christ in ways never previously considered. I don’t

know what comes next but I’m wiling to look beyond normal! We are a blessed

and boun(ful Church - let us bravely move forward together!

A Mercy Minute

We are all ready to get back to normal...or are

we? Maybe, there were things back then we were trying

to pray away. Would we really want to return to the past

or forge onward with faith into a renewed future? So

much for normal...let’s pray for renewal. Join us this week

on Facebook live Thursday at 7:30pm where Dr. Hardin

will share a Mercy Minute on the ‘New Normal’ including

special worship with our one and only Mike Roney!

Blessings, Hardin
