Precautions to Prevent the spread of COVID-19

You are no doubt aware that the COVID-19 virus has been spreading across the world, including in the United States. Most recently, there are now confirmed cases in Ohio. Symptoms can range from very mild to very severe, and even result in death. Those who are older, immune compromised, and those with underlying health conditions such as heart disease, lung disease, and diabetes, seem to be at a higher risk. • Every person should take precautions at this time: • Avoid close contact with sick persons• Cover your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth after touching other

persons or objects• Clean / disinfect surfaces in your home regularly • Practice good health habits – healthy eating, adequate sleep, stress

management In addition, the Diocese of Cleveland, in an effort to safeguard the faithful, is implementing precautionary measures at all parishes. Effective immediately, what you will notice the following here at the Cathedral:• All ministers (priests, deacons, servers, lectors, & extraordinary

ministers of Holy Communion) are to wash their hands with soap and water before and after Mass

• Extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion will use hand sanitizer prior to the distribution of Holy Communion

• The Precious Blood will no longer be distributed at any Masses• For those who receive Communion on the tongue, you are asked to

please make sure that you open your mouth sufficiently wide and stick out your tongue sufficiently far so as to avoid contact between your tongue/mouth and the minister’s hand

• Holy water fonts will be emptied (although if you would like some holy water for your homes or your personal use, you can bring a vessel filled with water and ask a priest to bless it)

• The “Sign of Peace” will be omitted – After the priest says: “The Peace of the Lord be with you always”, no sign of peace will be exchanged and the liturgy will proceed immediately to the “Lamb of God”

• Everyone is encouraged to observe good health practices that protect against the spread of disease and to avoid any unnecessary physical contact with others at Mass

• If you are sick, stay home – legitimate illness excuses one from the Sunday Obligation

Please continue to pray and to keep all those affected in your prayers.

Knights of Columbus - Why are you here? …to know God, to love God, to serve God. Step into the breach this Lent to strive nobly and discover your role as a man of Faith in today’s world. The Greater Cleveland Knights of Columbus will be at the doors of the Cathedral this weekend, March 14/15, to introduce themselves during their March membership drive. They also invite you to visit <kofc.org/intothebreach> and view their video series inspired by the Apostolic Exhortation: Into the Breach by the Most Rev. Thomas J. Olmsted, Bishop of Phoenix. After all the cheers have died down and the stadium is empty... The enduring thing that is left is the dedication to doing with our lives the very best we can to make the world a better place in which to live.” - Vince Lombardi. Msgr Blair Council 4505, Knights of Columbus.

St. Patrick’s Day Mass Canceled - Please note that the customary 10:00 am Mass for Saint Patrick’s Day has been canceled at the request of the Board of Health. The regular schedule of Cathedral Mass and Confession will continues as usual.

Faith Enrichment OpportunitiesThe Third Sunday of Lent is already here –

How did that happen? It is also the first of three scrutinies for the Elect, (RCIA/RCIC members who will

be baptized at the Easter Vigil)! It is a time for the Elect to examine (scrutinize) the areas of their lives where they are tempted or sin, as well as what they do and what they fail to do. The Elect need the prayers and strength that come from our community. The Fourth and Fifth Sundays of Lent are the second and third scrutinies. *From the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, prepared by the International Commission on English in the Liturgy and the Bishops’ Committee on the Liturgy, USCCB (#138-145).

It is also a time of final preparation for all those who desire membership in the Catholic Church and will celebrate the sacraments of initiation at the Easter Vigil. Please continue to pray for them. How is your Lenten Journey? It’s still not too late to register for Lenten Enrichment Opportunities! To see the opportunities currently available, go to <saintjohncathedral.com/lenten-faith-enrichment>. Join the growing number of parishioners who have registered. Reminder: Once you have registered for one or more opportunities, you will receive an email with a link to the opportunity. As Catholics, we continue to focus on prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Let us reflect on the words of Pope Benedict XVI once again this week: “Dear Friends, on this Lenten journey let us be careful to accept Christ’s invitation to follow him more decisively and consistently, renewing the grace and commitments of our Baptism, to cast off the former person within us and put on Christ, in order to arrive at Easter renewed and able to say, with Saint Paul: It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me (Gal 2:20).” ~ Benedict XVIAny questions, please email <[email protected]> or call 216 771-6666 ext. 5620.

Stewardship of the Earth - As Christians, we believe that the earth is entrusted to our faithful stewardship. We are not its owners, but its caretakers on behalf of God.

How can I be a good steward? How can we recycle more & better in 2020? Here are some tips:Start by participating. Half of what American households throw away is recyclable. Check locally to know what’s accepted in your curbside recycling, what day it’s picked up, or find a nearby drop-off site.Know what to throw. Recycling is a global issue that requires local solutions. Many communities accept different materials. Visit your local city website to learn what materials are and are not accepted.Know what not to throw. The No List. Plastic bags, clothing, food and liquid, garden hoses, electrical cords, Styrofoam, needles, and yard waste do not belong in curbside recycling.Twin the bin. Make it easy for anyone in your house to recycle – just as easy as it is to throw something away. Locate your in-home recycling bin next to your trash can. For extra credit, twin the bin in your kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry room. Most of a home’s recyclables originate in these three rooms.

A Community of Justice & Love

Collection for the Needy this Weekend - If you forgot to pick up toiletries or underwear for those in need, no problem. You can always give a check or cash. If you don’t have cash or checks with you, no problem. You can always give directly via the Cathedral’s WeShare at: <yinyurl.com/PIC-SJC>. If

you can’t do this, then please say a prayer and give a smile and a friendly “hello” to those who deal with poverty on a daily basis. See, we’ve got you covered. In addition, this weekend, we are collecting bags of candy for our 14th annual Cosgrove Easter Luncheon on April 4th.“Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” Hebrews: 13:16

Cosgrove Center Easter Luncheon The 15th Annual Bishop Cosgrove Center Easter Luncheon, sponsored by the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist and the Social Action Ministry, will take place on Saturday, April 4, the day before Palm Sunday. Each year we serve around 300 meals to our neighbors in downtown Cleveland who are experiencing homelessness or other difficulties in life.

We are looking for volunteers who can join us between 11 am and 2:30 pm. The Cosgrove Center is located at 1736 Superior Ave. Safe, secured parking is available but limited. If you are interested in helping out, please contact Nick

Castele at <[email protected]>. All volunteers must sign up before the event. We have limited slots for volunteers, so please contact us as soon as you are able. Not only is this an opportunity to meet fellow Cathedral parishioners, but to become familiar with the mission of our Church in the City partner, the Bp. Cosgrove Center.

This Lenten season, join our faith community, and nearly 14,000 Catholic communities across the United States, in a life-changing journey of encounter with CRS Rice Bowl. Pick up your

family’s CRS Rice Bowl at the doors of the church. Through CRS Rice Bowl, we encounter those living in conditions of poverty around the world, and have the opportunity to practice the corporal and spiritual works of mercy through our prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Meet Yvone from Kenya. She learned proper nutrition & hygiene practices to help keep her healthy and in school. Yvone now has a chance to dream & the strength to follow those dreams. How can you ensure that young people in your community receive proper nutrition? Visit <crsricebowl.org> for more.

Praise the Lord, all you nations! Glorify God, all you peoples.Steadfast is God's love to all people. And the promise of God endures for ever. What you hear in the dark, speak in the light; what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops.I will pasture my sheep, says the Lord; I myself will give them rest.Remain in me, as I in you; fruit abundant you will bear. This is the seed that fell on rich soil; those with a good heart will bring forth fruit.

He shed his blood for my transgressions; And by his stripes we are healed. Why do you cry? He has risen. Why are you weeping? He's not dead. So as you go through life's journey, don't you worry lift up your head.

Priest: The Lord be with you. People: And with your spirit.Priest: A reading from the Holy Gospel…

People: Glory to you, O Lord.

The Gospel according to John 4:5-42People: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

CreedI believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

(All bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Come, let us sing joyfully to the Lord; Let us acclaim the rock of our salvation. Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; Let us joyfully sing psalms to him.Come, let us bow down in worship; let us kneel before the Lord who made us. For he is our God, and we are the people he shepherds, the flock he guides.Oh, that today you would hear his voice: "Harden not your hearts as at Meribah, as in the day of Massah in the desert, where your fathers tempted me; they tested me though they had seen my works."

Communion - Come, Good & Faithful Servants

1. Sing of Joseph, strong and gentle, nobly born of David's house; Just and upright man of labor, whom God chose as Mary's spouse. Chosen, too, as Jesus' guardian, guiding him since infancy. Holy child of holy parents, holy is their family.

2. Glory be to God the Father; Glory be to God the Son; Glory be to God the Spirit; Glory to the Three in One. From the heart of blessed Mary, from all saints the song ascends, And the Church the strain reechoes unto earth’s remotest ends. __________________________________________________________________________________________ Text: Vs 1: © 1983, World Library Publications; Vs 2: © Estate of Roland F. class on Saturday, April 4, at 3:00 pm. To register for the class call 216-771-6666.

Family Perspectives - God wants to bless our families. Are we too busy and stressed to notice and accept these blessings? God is present, waiting to meet and bless us in our families, but needs our time and attention. We need to take time together as families to have fun, to talk, to work together, to eat, and to pray. Schedule some “family times” in the calendar and see Jesus in the transfiguration of your family members and relationships.

Morning Prayer Groups - Please consider joining our weekly gatherings from 6:30-7:00 am in the Lower Sacristy of the Cathedral. Using the scriptures for the coming Sunday, these groups share their faith and some fellowship over a cup of coffee. The women’s group gathers on Tuesdays, and the men’s group on Fridays. Just show up at the Lower Sacristy, or contact the parish office with inquiries.

Centering Prayer is a spiritual practice of our Catholic contemplative tradition that opens us more deeply to a relationship with God in faith and intimacy. Our group meets on Monday evenings from 6:30-8:00 pm in the Lower Sacristy.
