Introduction

• The ESRC awarded £1.1m in 2008 to a consortium to establish the Survey Resources Network (SRN),

• A central bank of survey resources to support the work of the UK’s research community and raise the standards of social science research.

SRN aims

• co-ordinate the development of survey research methods in the UK

• enhance the quality of training, research resources, and knowledge dissemination in the field.

• advise the ESRC and the broader research community on strategy matters relating to the use of surveys in the UK.

Survey Skills Programme

• One of 5 strands in Survey Resource Network

• This Programme builds on the ESRC funded Survey Link Scheme which was run by the University of Surrey from 2005-2008.

• It is a training programme for academics and social researchers in Central Government, Local Government, the NHS, and the third sector to give them the opportunity to

visit survey and research organisations

observe or take part in various aspects of the survey

process.

• Institute of Education (IoE)

• London School of Economics (LSE)

• Office for National Statistics (ONS)

Survey Skills Programme

• Comprises One day introductory workshop (small charge for attendance)

Up to 4 days of placements to get practical hands-on experience of

working with a live social survey (free of charge)

Discounted fees for other theoretical training through NatCen Learning

and IoE (and others in time)

• Placements include Accompanying an interviewer

Shadowing a survey analysis team

Visiting a telephone unit

Visiting the UK Data Archive

We have run 15 workshops so far, with another 9 planned for 2010/2011.
