As described in Deliverable D5.7 (Capabilities & Human Resources), during the project A
DUE started to internally develop the distinctive capabilities and competences in the
engineering, manufacturing and installation of the new technology. Technicians, sales force
and technical-commercial staff (quotations and offers are customized, following specific
productive and economical needs of customers and potential stakeholders) have been involved
in many different activities that A DUE put in place in order to develop a distinctive and
specialized know-how concerning the new technology. This will lead A DUE straight to its
objective to realize, promote and sell the water treatment system as effectively as possible.
Taking part as visitors to trade fairs and conferences allowed the project team to obtain info
and data take-over on the state of the art of water treatment technologies, on alternative
solutions proposed from potential competitors, on possible suppliers of technologies provided
in water treatment. During the trade fairs attended by A DUE as exhibitor (see Deliverable

D6.16 on Public events participation) A DUE team not only focused on promotional
activities, but also had the opportunity to collect these info.
With the same purpose, the following conferences were attended by the project team:
1) 2nd Food Waste Management conference, held in Cremona (Italy) on April 22
nd 2016, on
“Management of process water waste and effluents coming from the food industry”, aimed
to the rationalization of water consumption and to the possibilities for reuse and energy
recovery of wastewater. The event was organized by CremonaFiere, DLG International e
AITA Associazione Italiana Tecnologia Alimentare and it was addressed to: managers and
technicians in the agro-food industry, producers of equipment and water treatment plants,

2) 20th
European Forum on Eco-innovation
The 20th European Forum on Eco-innovation was held in Tallinn, Estonia, on 26-28 October
2016. The Forum examined financing opportunities for eco-innovative SMEs and showcased
successful companies who have succeeded in attracting investors and growing their business.
It explored the enabling factors and challenges of transitioning to a circular business model
and addressed these through the lens of business, finance and public sector. The Forum also
provided an opportunity for participants from across Europe to:

participate in a business-to-investors matchmaking session (this event brought
together the most promising companies, active in several Eco-innovation sectors, and
"cleantech" investors in bilateral meetings). The project participated to this event
actively;
learn about the innovative technologies with performance claims verified by the
Environmental Technology Verification (ETV);
discover the best performing eco-innovative companies showcasing their
environmental and business accomplishments at the European Business Awards for
the Environment Ceremony;
find out about successful eco-innovative projects funded under different EU funding
programmes and financial instruments;
take part in site visits to eco-innovative companies who have successfully turned
investments into circular business models.
The event was jointly organised by the European Commission’s Directorate General for
Environment and the Ministry of the Environment of the Republic of Estonia.

3) 4th
International Conference on Sustainable Design and Manufacturing
The 2017 4th
Edition of the International Conference on SDM - Sustainable Design and
Manufacturing, organised by KES International in partnership with Alma Mater Studiorum –
University of Bologna and held in Bologna (Italy) on April 26th-28th, has been a privileged
high level scientific context to disseminate the major results of the Less. Water Bev-Tech.
Project.
The conference official website is at the following link:
http://sdm-17.kesinternational.org/
while the meeting agenda is available here:
http://sdm-17.kesinternational.org/programme.php
SDM-2017 consisted of keynote talks, oral presentations, invited sessions and workshops. It
covered the theory and applications of sustainable design and manufacturing, and related
areas, whilst providing an excellent platform for the presentation and discussion of new data
and concepts, leading to knowledge exchange and the generation of new ideas. Dedicate
attention is paid on sustainability issues, plants, technologies and solutions to decrease the
environmental impact of industrial processes. Dedicated parallel invited sessions were on this
topic in accordance with the conference scope:
“Sustainability is a topical issue. The idea of sustainability was first defined in 1987 in a
Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development: "Sustainability means
being able to satisfy current needs without compromising the possibility for future
generations to satisfy their own needs". Ten year later, three dimensions of sustainability
were underlined through the concept of the Triple Bottom Line: Environment; Economy;
Society. Therefore, sustainability is interdisciplinary and it implies a holistic approach and
regards all the aspects of human being life. A relevant is played by the Industry. Focusing on
Design and Manufacturing, sustainability must be considered from the concept to the end of
life of any industrial product. The KES-SDM series of conferences encompass a broad
spectrum of sustainable design and manufacturing related subjects. The following list
provides examples of applicable topics; however, the list is not meant to exclude other
applicable areas.”
More details on the conference are in the flyer available here:

6) VDMA water-technology@drinktec Symposium, a lecture and discussion event on
the topic of water, held at Drinkec Fair 2017 in Munich, Germany. The Symposium,
which was part of the official program of the fair and free of charge, provided a compact
and complete overview about water-related solutions for sustainable beverage production.
The 34 lectures presented at the water-technology@drinktec symposium addressed the
urgent question as to how to make good, economic use of water.

The topics cover issues involved in water treatment, wastewater treatment, process
optimisation and quality control for process and product water, offering technical
solutions, practical examples. Focus on items which were very interesting for the project
team: reverse osmosis as one of the methods for producing product and process water,
with an essential role played by customer quality requirements, such as hygienic design,
CIP and sanitising capability; water treatment methods with new mineral adsorbents for
effective, low-cost removal of semimetals and heavy metals from drinking water;
reducing water consumption rates trough closed-loop water recovery solutions as an
approach for saving water in water-scarce countries.
