INDEPENDENT LIVING IS COMING TO STEVESTON SPRING 2012

One of the most talked about projects in Steveston right now is the buildings being erected on the corner of No. 1 Road and Chatham Street. For those that have watched the project emerge since late 2009 with the demolition of the ANAF Unit 284 Clubhouse, the changes to the site are astounding. For those who are new to the area or those that may not know the history of the site, the property located at 11900 No. 1 Road was originally the site of the Steveston Fisherman’s Hospital Complex. From 1900 to 1942 the Hospital complex was administered by the Fisherman’s Benevolent Society and was the site of the first hospital in Richmond which was also Canada’s first hospital to offer socialized medicine. In 1947 the Steveston Unit 284 of the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans of Canada purchased the land.

In April 2009, the Steveston Unit 284 of the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans of Canada together with Steveston (Unit 284) Holdings Ltd. formed Steveston 284 Seniors’ Housing Society, a non-profit, registered charity, and they were tasked with seeing the development through to completion. So, the project located at No. 1 Road and Chatham Street in Richmond, will be a two building development connected in an ‘H’ pattern encompassing:

• 144 seniors’ housing units with integrated support services, owned and managed by Steveston 284 Seniors’ Housing Society; and

• A commercial building comprised of a lounge and clubhouse for the Steveston Unit 284 of the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans Association will also be built on the site.

Construction started in October 2010 and is anticipated to be complete and ready for tenants by April 2012. The total capital cost of this development is approximately $46.6 million.

• The Government of Canada, through Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, will provide approximately $2,227,500, under Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

• The Province of British Columbia will provide approximately $1,697,550 through a Provincial Infrastructure Grant.

• Steveston Unit 284 of the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans of Canada provided land valued at approximately $8,310,000

We have been working hard both with what you can see and what you can’t. Through our website, http://steveston284seniorshousing.webs.com we have kept the community up to date with the development, as information became available we uploaded it to the web site and we have kept a photo book of our progress for all to see.

In late 2009 interest was expressed by individuals wanting to put their name on a wait list, so we began a wait list for the individuals who wanted the opportunity to potentially be one of the first tenants in the new Independent Living building. We have received a deluge of requests from Richmond residents, lower mainland residents and others from around the Country and the world. Names are kept in chronological order based on the date the request was made so all qualified individuals will have an equal opportunity to become one of the first tenants. Check our website for tenancy criteria and the link to add your name to the wait list.

The most exciting progress that has happened is that we are starting to contact the people who asked to have their name placed on the wait list to see if they are still interested in becoming tenants. Small groups of people will be invited to private meetings to receive information on the

development and to make their suite selections. This does not stop individuals from adding their name to the list as the wait list will be used beyond the original tenants to fill vacancies that would occur. …………….......…………………………………

Premier Christy Clark sets off on her jobs and trade mission to Asia Premier Christy Clark sets off on her jobs and trade mission to China and India today, joined by nearly 350 representatives from 150 companies, organizations and community. The fact the Premier is personally leading the jobs and trade mission ˆ and that she will be joined by Ministers Pat Bell, Mike de Jong and Steve Thomson ˆ is of critical importance. Business everywhere is about relationships, but nowhere more so than in Asia. Premier Christy Clark, along with the three ministers, will open doors for the delegates on the jobs and trade mission. Companies such as Western Canada Seafood Merchants and Processors, Flying Fresh Air Freight, and the Vancouver International Airport Authority from Richmond are some which will benefit from this. British Columbia seafood is just one of our products in great demand in China. Last year B.C. exported $957 million worth of seafood globally, including $80 million to China. This trade mission will be a great opportunity to increase our seafood exports even more. This is a great opportunity for Steveston, which has the largest commercial fishing fleet on the west coast of Canada. Increases in seafood exports will inevitably mean more business for seafood companies in Steveston and more jobs. The greater number of cargo flights that will be needed to ship ever increasing volumes of seafood to China will also mean more jobs at

Vancouver International Airport.!!!!Increased exports and more jobs will benefit the entire province as well. This is good for families, good for business ˆ and also, I might add, good for the vital services we all rely on, such as health care and education. More exports and more jobs mean more money for this government to continue strengthening these vital services. I wish Premier Christy Clark and the hundreds of delegates on this jobs and trade mission the very best as they work to increase our exports to Asia and create jobs here at home. …………….......…………………………………

Richmond Carvers Society

The Richmond Carvers Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of woodcarving as a hobby and an art form. Started in 1988, the Society has grown to become one of the largest in the area with a membership of over 60. The Club meets every Wednesday evening throughout the school year at the Hugh McRoberts High School, 8980 Williams Road at Garden City, Richmond. The meetings are in the Woodworking shop from 6:30pm to 9:00pm. If you are a carver or are interested in carving, drop in for a visit. The Richmond Carvers Society hosts a Wood Carving show held at the end of May each year. The 23rd Annual Woodcarving Show will be held May 26th & 27th in the Steveston Community Centre. In every city there is one club that distinguishes itself from the rest – one club where the facilities, service and tradition combine to offer an unparallel membership experience. In Richmond, it is the Steveston Unit 284 of the Army, Navy & Air Force Veterans in Canada Association. Established in 1917, ANAF is one of Canada’s most distinguished private clubs with a reputation for assisting veterans in need and for community support. Dynamic and constantly evolving, the Club is as committed to its traditions as it is to forward progress, and embodies the phrase “honouring traditions while embracing tomorrow” in all that it undertakes. The Steveston ANAF began its journey in 1946 when 30 local veterans obtained a charter to open up a veterans club in Steveston. From their humble beginnings to their present day successes, the ANAF has been an integral part of Steveston for the past 65 years. Although the primary focus of the ANAF Club is to support Veteran’s and their dependents, we are not a group to only support part of the community. ANAF 284 has helped to sponsor and fundraise for many local groups over the years, including children's sports teams, the B.C. Cancer Society, the Red Cross, Boy Scouts and Girl Guides, cadets, Terry Fox fund, Richmond General Hospital, The Food Bank, The Salvation Army and many, many more groups in Steveston and beyond. Total donations in our 65 years amounts to in excess of $3,500,000.00.

The Steveston ANAF Club is an excellent place to share with friends, to meet new people, and to be a Member. Military service is not a prerequisite to join – all are Welcome! The Club holds a variety of social events for its members on an ongoing basis. Highlighting the Club’s calendar are the weekly meat draws on Friday and Saturday, the free Bingo on Thursday’s with a $500 jackpot to be won. The 55+ Seniors participate in fun snooker weekly, with competitive snooker every other week during the winter months. During the summer months these Seniors’ also play Golf at a local Executive style course. A large TV for sporting events, free giveaways during sporting events all combined with the good fellowship and camaraderie of a superb club.

The Heroes Fund for Animal Protection supports emergency animal rescue, the investigation of animal cruelty cases, and bringing abusers to justice.

The Heroes Fund for Animal Protection supports the many heroes connected to our organization. Our Cruelty Investigations Department (CID) works under the authority of the provincial Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act to respond to the thousands of complaints of animal cruelty and neglect the BC SPCA receives each year. Our Special Provincial Constables work in communities across the province and when needed, seize and rescue animals from neglectful and abusive conditions such as puppy and kitten mills, animal fighting rings and hoarding. In many cases, animals are found dehydrated, starving, without shelter and in certain cases, they are found suffering from wounds that have been intentionally inflicted.

Supporting the Heroes Fund helps support the numerous resources required for this physically and emotionally demanding work. Staffed by professional officers as well as

volunteers, they require equipment and supplies needed to investigate properties and remove animals from situations of abuse and neglect. The fund also supports the BC SPCA's ability to prosecute abusers ensuring they are brought to justice. The heroes are not only our CID team, but also the animals who survive unbelievable situations, find the strength to love and trust humans again, and go on to become loving members of new families. Hello! We Are Looking for our Forever Homes-- Can you help us? Fay and Sydney are our 2 youngest puppies. And although they are not siblings, they sure do enjoy each other's company. Fay is a cute little Chi mix who is 4 months old and weighs 7lb. Her mommy was a Jack Russel or Rat Terrier, but the daddy was most likely a Chihuahua, because Fay looks just like a Chi, just bigger than most. Fay has a very sweet and calm temperament, and is very affectionate once she gets to know the person. She is usually very quiet and non-demanding, but will bark to join in the chorus with the other dogs in her foster home.Fay loves to play with other doggies and would also probably be

good with kids because she’s very gentle (as long as the kids are gentle with her!). She a sturdier version of the Chi breed, which would make her a great family pet. Fay is already spayed and fully vaccinated. Her adoption fee is $450. Sydney is an 11 week old (born July 22), 4lb bundle of cuteness. She is a Yorkie Min Pin mix, since her mommy is a Yorkie mix, but Sydney looks very much like a Min Pin. Sydney is a curious, playful and sometimes mischievous little tyke. She has lots of energy to play with other doggies in her foster home. But she also calms down quickly, especially when picked up and cuddled. She seems to have a more submissive temperament. Sydney really likes being carried around in a comfy doggy pouch and travels really well in a crate. She would probably do well being taken to work once she gets older.
