“HOME OF THE SHARKS” – Established 2007

The warm sunny weather we are now experiencing reminds us that the end of this school year is rapidly approaching. Semester 2 Term 1 report cards were posted on April 25 and we hope parents were able to review the report card with their child and celebrate the accomplishments and help set learning goals for the final term. Parent-Teacher conferences were held on May 2nd and 3rd. We thank parents who were able to make arrangements to meet with teachers to discuss their child’s learning. Beyond our Parent-Teacher conference times, teachers continue to be available and parents are always welcome to connect with teachers to discuss their child’s progress.

May is an action packed month for our Sharks. All our spring athletic teams are up and running. Our volunteer student leaders planned and organized a very successful Grade 8 Social Responsibility Day teaching our grade 8s about being leaders, followers and role models. Our Leadership class with Ms. O’Neill, will be hosting the Grade 7 Fun Day on May 17 that they planned, organized and that they will be leading. Spectrum grade 8s and 9s have been off for the week to Strathcona and Spectrum grade 10 students will be leaving in a week for their excursion to Ottawa and Quebec City. SLSS, along with Burnett and Palmer, will be hosting 32 students from Wakayama, Japan from May 15 to May 20. The SLSS Drama Club with Ms. Kosar ran their spring production R.E.D. Mr. Mikulin and his music students have had a very busy performance schedule visiting schools, community performances ending this month with the Spring Music Concert at our school on May 31. The Student Council and many of the SLSS clubs have activities and fundraisers too – lots happening at SLSS!

Graduation is just around the corner for our grade 12 students and this is indeed a very busy, action packed and eventful time. Many of our grade 12 are writing Advance Placement exams, completing scholarship and post-secondary entrance requirements while planning for and enjoying memorable events – Grad Boat Cruise, Commencement Ceremony, Dinner Dance, Dry Grad and of course preparing for the English 12 Provincial Exam. Details and information about all the graduation events and activities are provided to students at grade 12 assemblies and can be found on the school website.

May and June continue to be eventful and activity-packed for all our students. Grade 8 Social Responsibility Day On April 26 over 60 grade 10 and 11 student leaders, under the direction of Ms. Sonya O’Neill, hosted the second Grade 8 Social Responsibility Day of the school year. IMPORTANT Year End Information Assessment Days & Learning Opportunities

The end of the school year is fast approaching with the last day of school scheduled for Thursday, June 28, and time set aside for assessments and learning opportunities on June 21-28. Please see below for a detailed schedule. (Print friendly copies are available on the school website). Please make special note of the following dates:

• June 20 Lock Return & 2018-2019 Timetable Distribution • June 21-28 Assessment Days & Learning Opportunities • June 25-26, 28 Graduation Numeracy Assessment (GNA) for Grade 11s • June 27 Sharkfest & Yearbooks

Current Grade 11 students are scheduled to write the Graduation Numeracy Assessment (GNA) on June 25-26, 28. Next year’s grade 10 and 11 students will write the GNA during the 2018-2019 school year.

The GNA is an electronic assessment. Grade 11 students have been scheduled according to their last name, and should check to see when and where they are scheduled to write. Conflicts should be brought to the attention of administrators as soon as possible.

Here are some quick facts about the GNA: • The GNA is not tied to a specific math course. It evaluates a student’s numeracy skills developed over the course of their education. • Students will have the opportunity to attempt the GNA a total of 3 times, with the goal of increasing their proficiency with each rewrite. • The GNA is a 2-hour assessment, but students may use a third hour if they require. • A student’s best outcome will be recorded on their final transcript.

For more information on the Graduation Numeracy Assessment, go to: https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/provincial-assessment/graduation/numeracy

Information for parents on the Graduation Numeracy Assessment can be found at: https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/sites/curriculum.gov.bc.ca/files/pdf/Graduation_Numeracy_Brochure.pdf

Steveston-London Community News from Theatre, Music, Student Council, and Athletics

All the World’s a Stage The Drama Club presented Emily Ison's original full length play, "R.E.D." directed by Grade 12 student, Mandy Huang earlier this month. The show told the story of a group of friends who love movies and music and how they manage during a school lockdown in the classroom of one of their favourite teachers, Mr. Jefferson. We learned about their hopes and dreams, their lives and their relationships and what they believe and value. The play was funny and romantic and fraught with tension which exploded in a dramatic confrontation at the end. Featuring the usual cast of talented Steveston-London performers (with some new faces as well) and thanks to the hard work and devotion of our dynamite crew, the play was a must see!

Drama students also spearheaded the week's observation of workplace safety, which culminated in the Day of Mourning for Workers Killed or Injured on the Job observed on Saturday, April 28. Students handed out information cards about workplace safety and buttons honouring the day of mourning and provided shocking stats on our daily announcements. Did you know that a third of all injuries on the job affect young people? Our students need to know that they should refuse unsafe work and can do so without fear of reprisal. Students working on the campaign include Jessie Hall, Janice Chan, Veronica Xia, Mya Snidanko, Leila Mourzikov, Kyle Yeung, Ved Ballary, Claire Marcoe, Ophelia Smith, Nathan Fraser, and Dina Bounine. Music News • May 17-- Choir performs for Japan Exchange; Jazz Band performs at Maple Lane Spring Fling 5PM Maple Lane grounds. • May 31st-- Our Music Dept Year End Concert for Parents and Family; 7PM SLSS Theatre ; admission by donation. Student Council News Student Council is excited to announce that Friday, May 25, will be Freezie Friday! Wear your designated colour that corresponds with your grade and you will get a freezie. Grade 8’s wear Yellow, 9’s Red, 10’s Blue, 11’s Green, 12’s Black, and Teachers White.

With the year nearly coming to an end, Student Council will be hosting the last dance of the year called Bae Watch, on Thursday, May 24. Tickets will be on sale for $7 up until the day of the dance. Can’t wait to see you all there!

It’s that time of year again! Student Council will be holding elections for the 2018-2019 Student Council President! This year we have five candidates: Jessalyn Chen, Teagan Docherty, Cecilia Feng, Jesse Hsieh, and Sara Lee. Campaigning and election dates begin the week of May 28. Who will you choose to be your president?

Athletic News Sharks got bite this month as our spring sports teams fight to the finish line.
