UNiTed MeThOdiST wOMeN eVeNT AT ePwORThThe Southeast District United Methodist Women (UMW) recently held their annual leadership training at Epworth Village. About 100 people attended. As part of the event, the women posed to show support for the current UMW campaign to stop human trafficking.

Susanna Wesley Health Center residents recently celebrated our community’s diversity during Black History Month. Dr. Martin Luther King’s inspiring “I Have a Dream” speech was shared followed by prayer. Next, typical music from the islands was played and residents enjoyed a special ‘soul food’ treat. Later in the month, there was a display of traditional cultural attire and a resident fashion show. Finally, a potluck of typical dishes from the residents’ countries was enjoyed. The Nursing and Dietary Departments oversaw all food events to insure that each resident enjoyed food appropriate for any restricted diet. The special month concluded with the presentation of a Black History film.

highLighTiNg “The eNTeRTAiNeRS”Epworth Village is blessed to have dedicated volunteers who consistently delight the residents. These volunteers serve in many areas, always with the goal to brighten the day. One important area is musical entertainment, which the residents love! The Mater Academy Chorus is a joyful group of middle and high schoolers. Led by their dynamic director, Ms. Stephanie Coat, the chorus visits Epworth three times a year to share their voices in song. Many of their songs are choreographed, which adds a truly special effect to their performances. Residents are delighted every time the choral students appear. The students are very caring and friendly with the residents too, which is another reason why they are so appreciated. Our Lady of the Lakes School Choir share their sweet voices under the direction of Sister Helene Kloss and pianist Mr. David Shannon. These elementary school students always give a heart-warming presentation. They are marvelous singers, and the residents truly enjoy their singing. Miami dade College student performances are another tradition. Led by Music Professor Sergio Gonzalez and Language Professor Maria Vargas, the students perform as a group and some sing solos. Professor Gonzalez shares his talent on the piano. During their most recent visit, Dr. Kelly Anne Kennedy-Everett and students from the Hialeah Campus Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society came with the chorus and brought presents for the residents. These are just a few of the musical volunteers who make a difference. We hope that their participation enriches their lives as much as it does our residents’.

We appreciate the good that social workers bring to our society as a whole and particularly to Epworth Village and the Susanna Wesley Health Center. Maria Sevilla is Social Services Director at Susanna Wesley and has served as State President of the Florida Health Care Social Worker Association. Social Work is a rewarding career that involves helping others improve their lives. At SWHC, we social workers advocate for residents and link them to essential com-munity resources. We address issues facing them and their families. Our goal is to provide excellence in care and promote wellness. Every day is a new challenge but, at the same time, every day is a new opportunity to help those in need. We work to ensure that all residents are treated with dignity, kindness, and respect. I became a member of the Florida Health Care Social Worker Association, and ultimately became its president, to further expand our resources at SWHC and to obtain the utmost support for our vulnerable residents. By ad-vocating for social workers and providing them, and the community, with ongoing education, we can better serve our residents. I wouldn’t trade my career for anything. I’ve been a social worker for 16 years, eight years at SWHC. I look forward to another 16 years in the profession. Just as I have been able to make a difference in many residents’ lives, many have impacted mine and have made me the person I am today. I’m truly grateful to have chosen this career and to be a part of this wonderful community.

A dAY iN The Life Of AN ePwORTh SOCiAL wORKeR By Katherine Moran Epworth Village Resident Services Director As Resident Services Director, my goal is to ensure that every resident’s needs are met and that they get the most out of all the Village offers. My day typically starts with a staff meeting to discuss any issues or concerns. I orient new residents and visit them in their apartments to get to know their likes and dislikes, hob-bies, past occupations and just a little bit of everything that may help us make them feel at home here. Each day I take part in “Gang Tackling” selected apartments. Working with the maintenance and housekeeping departments, I check the apartment for any needs and talk to the resident about how she is doing and about any concerns.

In addition to addressing residents’ day-to-day concerns, I regularly attend Care Plan meetings with residents and their families to discuss needs and concerns, such as changes in health conditions and the effects on their daily lives and to offer help or recom-mendations. Each day is a learning experience. I try to take advantage of every situation and learn something from it to better assist residents. I always knew I wanted to help people; working at Epworth Village lets me do that on a daily basis.

SwhC hAS A big heARTNational Nursing Home Week begins on Mother’s Day, May 8, and continues through May 14. This year’s theme is: It’s a Small World with a Big Heart. This is the week we honor everyone who contributes to Susanna Wesley Health Center’s success – residents, family members, employees and volunteers. Thanks to their big hearts, SWHC con-sistently receives the highest nursing home rating of five stars. In fact, SWHC was recognized as one of Florida’s best nursing homes in the respected “U.S. News and World Report.”

Thanks to all those who consistently give of their time and talents. First, we thank Marta Delgado, SWHC’s administrator, Director of Nursing Eunice Fombu and Josette Maurice, assistant director of nursing. Their big hearts, combined with their knowledge, experience and leadership, drive SWHC’s success. We celebrate the SWHC nursing staff and the skills they share. For them, acts of kindness, caring and respect are the norm, even in difficult circumstances. We thank our volunteers who give their hearts and time to share their skills and support residents. We recognize the families and caregivers who strive to assist residents in living life to its fullest. We salute the residents as they strive to stay positive, active and looking forward. All of these big hearts working together provide comfort to a resident having a difficult day, a smile where there is sadness, a gentle hug to a resident whose spirit is sagging, friendship to a new resident who is feeling lost and overwhelmed and companionship to the lonely.
