A greeter is the most important role in the church. Saying this, if you can say “hello” that is all that is needed. When I was in seminary, a professor told me the most important role in a church was a greeter. One of our assignments was to visit a number of businesses, churches, and stores to see how friendly they were. Our class was to evaluate our experience when visiting these places contrasting the ones that greeted as you walked in to the ones that didn’t acknowledge you when entering. At first, I thought the assignment was a waste of time. After all, I was there to learn theology, not hospitality. I could not have been more wrong. When I entered the shops or churches and received a “hello” or “welcome,” I notice something inside of me felt energized. I wanted to stay and respond to the people there. However, when I entered someplace else that didn’t notice or engage me, I felt indifference. Even after 20 years of ministry, I would agree with that professor. A greeter is the most important role in the church. Saying this, if you can say “hello” that is all that is needed. At this time of year when we start planning for next year, consider this valuable ministry. Be a greeter. Help create an impression that invites, engages, and welcomes people to St. Paul. Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost – Green October 12, 2014

The Church Gathers for Worship - (Please take this moment to silence your mobile devices.)

The Choral Call to Worship: “I Come with Joy”

The Parish Concerns & Announcements

The Chiming of the Hour

The Flame and Cross Come to the Altar

The Prelude:(10:55) “Toccata in F Major” ......................................................... Dietrich Buxtehude

*The Hymn of Celebration: “And Can It Be that I Should Gain” ........................................... No. 363

*The Minister: “Let Us Unite in the Historic Confession of the Christian Church” I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

*The Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

(9:00 & 10:55) A Personal Testimony .............................................................. Mrs. Bettye Spence

The Call to Prayer Take this moment to prepare to speak to the One who is more focused upon our hearts than upon our words. One who is more committed to us and our soul’s well being than we are to our body’s comforts and pleasures. One who has shown us by the passion of our Lord Jesus Christ the seriousness with which He makes our appointment. The only One who loves us just because His love is greater than our sin. Free yourself in these moments from your fear-filled secrets by prayerfully confessing them in the presence of our Heavenly Father.

The Pastoral Prayer .......................................................................................... Rev. John Fugh, Jr.

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

*The Hymn of Preparation: “Amazing Grace” ...................................................................... No. 378

The Minister: “Let Us Worship God with His Tithes and Our Offerings” The Offertory Prayer The Offertory: “Variations” ........................................................................ Jan Pieter Sweelinck

*The Doxology Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise Him, all creatures here below: praise Him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

*The Scripture Lesson: (8:30 & 10:55) Psalm 40:6-8 .................................................................... Pew Bible, page 446 (9:00) Psalm 40:6-8 Minister: The Word of God for the People of God. Congregational Response: Thanks be to God.

*The Passing of the Peace Minister: The Peace of Christ be with you. Congregation: And also with you.

“If you think our hands are full, you should see our hearts.”

Girl Scouts Project St. Paul Girl Scouts are participating in a project centered on recycling, conservation, and environmental awareness. As a part of this project, they are collecting plastic bottle caps and lids such as: laundry detergent, shampoo, conditioner bottle caps, butter and coffee can lids and caps off of pop, milk and water bottles. As long as the caps have no metal in them they can recycle them. There will be several bins in place around the church for your items. All caps and lids should be cleaned before turning them in.

St. Paul will host families for our V.I.P (Valley Interfaith Promise) Ministry during Thanksgiving week this year, Nov. 23-30, and we will need your help! Before your entire Thanksgiving week is already planned away, think and pray about how you may be able to serve this ministry and these families in need during the holiday season. We all stay so busy, especially this time of year, but what better way to give thanks back to the Lord than by serving these homeless families with children at this crisis time in their lives? Volunteer emails will soon go out, but if you know you can serve that week, please email Tammy Reynolds at [email protected] or Christy Hubbard at [email protected], or call the Church Office at (706)327-7419.
