Welcome to Beautiful South, the south’s new premier lifestyle magazine.
Innovation and creativity are the inspiration behind this issue, as we discover how the passion and energy of local individuals has helped shape unique crafts, businesses and communities.
Tucked away in a quiet corner of East Hampshire, Selborne - best-known for its connection with pioneering naturalist Gilbert White - is a vibrant community surrounded by stunning scenery. We explore this charming village, learning of its fascinating history and local landmarks.
Venturing into the Meon Valley, we find out what’s on the menu at some of the area’s most prominent food and drink venues, all of which embrace local produce throughout their menu and behind the bar.
Talking of which, tucked away in a quiet corner of Four Marks, just a stone’s throw from the idyllic Watercress Line, Gorilla Spirits is making quite an impression. We meet the couple behind the creation of Silverback Gin, which has attracted attention from across the world since it was revealed only a matter of months ago.
Down at the New Forest Folk Festival, one of the finest musicians of a generation, Tony Christie, delves into his eclectic career before offering an insight into his latest project, inspired by Irish history and heritage.
Focusing on interiors, upcycling is taking on a more sophisticated feel this year – find inspiration and ideas to make this trend work for you inside this issue.
And if you’re in search of travel inspiration, look no further than our guide to Morocco. From sweeping desert to rugged coastline, this is one of the most diverse countries in Africa, offering everything from all-action adventure to sun, sea and sand.
Back on home soil, as the Great British summer descends into unpredictable autumn, check out our guide to creating the perfect transitional look, while the Gentleman’s Notebook explores the great outdoors and brilliant gadgets for business.
Enjoy the issue.

E And this is exactly what the festival is all about. It’s five years since brothers Nick and Keith Curtis decided to host a folk festival on the family farm, and the event is going from strength to strength, with dedicated folk fans and locals alike sampling home-cooked food and local ales while enjoying the eclectic line-up on stage.
But for Tony, regardless of the size of the venue, or the audience, the pressure to perform is always there: “The most challenging aspect of what I do is definitely the nerves before going on stage.
“Ultimately, when you’re on stage it’s your reputation on the line – one bad gig and it could all be over – so the pressure in the immediate moments before performing is immense. That’s something that never leaves you. But once the first song is out of the way, I can always feel myself relax and go with the flow.”
And the inspiration behind it all? The family’s piano and a determined school teacher…
“I first got into music when I was five or six. While my father played the piano, I would sing the hit songs of the day to my family. They used to give me money and I thought ‘Hey, this would be a great job!’
“Then, when I was at infant school I used to sit at the back of the class with my best mate, who would sing every song in the same note, all the
way through! I was so envious of him and tried to copy him, until one day my music teacher made me move down to the front and sing properly!”
And the rest is history…

rom the working men’s clubs of Yorkshire to the Royal Albert Hall, Tony Christie’s eclectic career has taken him to a variety of venues across the world.
And yet, after some six decades in music, on a lazy Sunday afternoon in the heart of the beautiful New Forest, this is a new experience for Tony.
“This is only the second folk festival I’ve ever been to – but it’s great, such a laid-back atmosphere,” Tony comments, as we glance across from the farmhouse to the wooden stage, where multi-instrumentalist Chris Leslie is in full flow, playing to an attentive crowd.
One of the finest musicians of his generation, Tony Christie is undoubtedly best-known for his 1971 hit “Is This the Way to Amarillo”, which returned to the charts four decades later as Peter Kay’s infamous Comic Relief hit.
“Amarillo was a god-send for me,” Tony recalls. “I’d already been playing and touring for about 10 years, struggling to get by, but that song gave me my big break – within a year I suddenly had another two or three hit songs and it opened a lot of doors in the industry.”
Yet Tony’s career is about much more than being a one-hit wonder. Tirelessly touring, Tony also has a passion for new projects – his latest venture uniting him with contemporary folk band Ranagri bringing him to the New Forest for the first time.
“I’ve known Don [Donal Rogers, vocals and guitar in Ranagri] for about 30 years, as he used to be in a band with my son,” Tony explains. “We decided to do something different and create an album celebrating traditional songs from a shared Irish heritage, ‘The Great Irish Songbook’.
“This is obviously a very different style of music and performing to what I’m used to – it’s more a kind of laid-back storytelling - but I sing it as I feel it.”
F“THE MOST
CHALLENGING ASPECT OF WHAT I DO IS
DEFINITELY THE NERVES BEFORE GOING ON STAGE.
ULTIMATELY, WHEN YOU’RE ON STAGE IT’S YOUR REPUTATION ON THE LINE – ONE BAD GIG AND IT COULD
ALL BE OVER”
Whether you spent the summer on the beach, by the pool or sitting around the barbecue, autumn offers a golden opportunity to get fitter than ever…
Time for trainingThe days are getting shorter and colder, so what better way to delay the onset of winter blues than to schedule some autumn training?
Time is at a premium. Your situation may not be conducive to committing to gym membership but, by exercising at home, you can avoid unnecessary journeys and fit your workouts around your other responsibilities. Even so, you’ll want to make the best use of the time available, so how should you train for maximum effect?
For quick results, you need to focus on equipment that exercises more than one muscle group. Machines that fit into this category include the rower and the cross-trainer.
Rowing is a full-body activity which engages every major muscle group. It also provides a great cardio workout and is ‘low-impact’ - unlike running.
Cross-trainers work more than one part of the body and represent a good option if you want to improve
cardiovascular fitness and
tone your arms and legs at the same time. They are also easy to use.
Another option, if you’ve insufficient space for exercise machines, is to use smaller items of equipment that enable you to perform a variety of exercises, such as suspension training kits, kettlebells, medicine balls and power bags.
Making it workHaving started your new routine, keep going and don’t give up! Most of us have embarked upon a fitness regime at some time in our lives, but few stick with it. Here are some tips on making your workout work for you…
You should exercise enough, but not too much – three workouts per week would be a minimum. Your body also needs to recover, so allow at least two days’ rest a week.
Achieving a fitness objective is great motivation to keep going. Set realistic goals, with interim targets along the way to help maintain interest.
A starvation diet isn’t necessary, but a good exercise/diet balance is crucial in getting fitter

Henry Ascoli discovers how vision and determination not only reintroduced mint growing at the heart of Hampshire, but inspired the creation of a range of truly unique natural beauty products…
became greater and greater, the industry looked to be dying out.
Summerdown’s mission to reintroduce this traditional crop began in the mid-1990s as part of a trend towards authentic food created for its quality and character.
But ultimately the inspiration behind it all is Sir Michael himself: “I think if you show attention to detail and determination to apply yourself,
whatever industry you’re in, you will eventually get results,” he explains, as we stride between row upon row of mint, ready to be harvested in just a couple of weeks’ time.
What Summerdown produce is an old-fashioned, high-quality peppermint - Black Mitcham – and it is the essential oil from this which formed the basis for a range of bath and beauty products, created with the expert help and advice of renowned perfumer Ruth Mastenbroek.
Every part of the collection uses high-quality, natural ingredients and essential oils in gentle formulations that care for the skin, with no
sulfates, parabens, PEGs, petrochemicals or artificial colourings.
Summerdown Fragrance’s Jan Kern explains: “I think there is now a huge appreciation for natural products, whether that’s with food, beauty or for the home, and the countryside is at the heart of everything we do – even down to our logo, which depicts the key elements of all our products.”All 10 products are made from natural ingredients and scented with a fresh bouquet of natural botanicals, which aim to capture the unique properties of the single estate peppermint oil, with a fresh and invigorating fragrance.
“Last year, our collection was voted winner in the ‘Naturally-inspired’ category in the Natural Health and Beauty Awards,” Jan adds. “I feel that we’re really beginning to receive recognition now for what we’re doing here – changing perceptions of beauty products and showing that a return to traditional, natural and locally-grown ingredients really is the way forward.”

and losing weight. Neither works as well without the other.
Workouts should be enjoyable rather than drudgery! Ideally, the training space should be pleasant and warm enough to avoid muscle pulls, but not so warm that it feels like a sauna.
If music motivates you, then exercise to music; mid-tempo to warm up, up-tempo during the main routine and relaxing as you cool down.

After only a few minutes in his presence, you cannot help but be inspired by Sir Michael Colman. His attitude, energy and sheer passion for his business is immediately evident, and as we embark on a whistlestop tour of the 2,000-acre Summerdown Estate, it is plain to see why. This is a very special place. Just a stone’s throw from the hustle and bustle of Basingstoke, here you are surrounded by rolling hills and crops, as mint, lavender and chamomile provide a patchwork quilt of colour.
At the start of the 20th century, England was famous for producing the best mint in the world, but as the pressure to grow food crops

The Meon ValleyExploring
Flint churches, thatched cottages and chalk streams flank the quiet lanes and rolling hills of the Meon Valley: the epitome of country life in England.
From gastro pubs to village shops, the Meon Valley is leading the way in incorporating local, fresh produce within creative seasonal cuisine, providing a feast for the senses and food for the soul.
And the essential ingredients to the Meon Valley’s culinary offering? Quality and variety. Traditional country pubs and innovative eateries sit side by side, while the Meon Valley proudly plays its part in Hampshire’s blossoming wine industry.
Indeed, the recent Vineyards of Hampshire event provided a perfect platform to showcase the county’s leading producers, including Hambledon Vineyard.
The Hambledon estate comprises 50 acres of vineyards and a gravity-fed, state-of-the-art
winery - the only one of its kind in the UK – producing award-winning sparkling wines including Hambledon’s Classic Cuvee and the Meonhill Rose.
Across the valley from the vineyard, you will find the original home of cricket: Broad-Halfpenny Down, and directly opposite, the Bat & Ball – a traditional village pub offering seasonal dishes packed with local ingredients, fine cask ales and a warm welcome.
helping smaller, traditional and mixed farms to survive in an increasingly specialised and intensive farming industry, plus, it always tastes better and fresher so it’s a win, win.”
The strength of this relationship between pub and producer, particularly in the most rural areas, is undoubtedly aided by the county’s appreciation for fresh, local ingredients and independent producers – due in part to monthly Hampshire Farmers’ Markets at locations across the county and the sense of community created by Hampshire Fare.
Tracy Nash, commercial manager of Hampshire Fare, explains: “The Meon Valley boasts stunning views and countryside which make the perfect backdrop for a walk followed by a delicious meal. Lots of the pubs in the area are focused on sourcing their ingredients and drinks locally which brings a taste of the countryside to their menus. The Meon Valley is a beautiful and delicious place to explore.”
“TRADITIONAL COUNTRY PUBS AND INNOVATIVE
EATERIES SIT SIDE BY SIDE, WHILE THE MEON VALLEY
PROUDLY PLAYS ITS PART IN HAMPSHIRE’S BLOSSOMING
WINE INDUSTRY.”
Continue the journey south to discover the medieval village of Wickham, which combines ancient history, intriguing shopping, quality produce, delicious dining, beautiful countryside and miles of walks and cycle rides.
At the very heart of this historic village sits Greens Restaurant & Bar, which offers a wealth of classic dishes with a modern twist, changing its menu with the seasons to incorporate local ingredients including fish from Johnsons of Portsmouth, succulent steaks from the award-winning Owtons butchers and freshly-baked bread from the Naked Baker of Botley.
And when it comes to locally-sourced produce, The Thomas Lord in West Meon takes it to a new level, incorporating ingredients from the pub’s own kitchen garden in its ever-changing menu, responding to the demand for fresh, seasonal and innovative cuisine.
Francis Heale, general manager at the Thomas Lord, explains: “By buying local food we are

Fine diningAnd nestled on the very edge of the Meon Valley, just a stone’s throw from Petersfield, is one of the jewels in its culinary crown.
The historic Langrish House features Frederick’s 2 AA rosette fine dining restaurant, offering everything from a romantic candlelit dinner to a taste of tradition with English afternoon tea in a picture postcard location.
Here, an ever-changing menu explores new flavours while retaining a sense of tradition, incorporating local, seasonal produce such as Rother Valley Organics.
Langrish can also create summer champagne hampers and picnics for its guests, providing a perfect opportunity to sample fine dining while exploring the stunning countryside of the Meon Valley.
Thus, whichever corner of the Meon Valley captures your attention, by combining creative ideas with local produce, this secluded corner of the South Downs is embracing its rural connections at every level to truly set the standard.
