Welcome to the first issue of Beautiful South, the south’s new premier lifestyle magazine.

We are truly blessed to live and work in such a picturesque part of the world, and this publication

aims to be at the very heart of that, exploring all the very best aspects of the south to provide a fresh perspective on local life.

Inspirational individuals, artisan businesses and innovative events all play their part in this debut issue.

Winchester’s leading role in promoting local produce and its wealth of choice when eating out takes centre stage in our special food and drink feature, as we meet some of the key players in creating the city’s thriving dining scene.

In our first interview, we meet Francis Benali: former Southampton footballer, lifelong Hampshire resident, committed fundraiser and dedicated family man. A true inspiration.

The picturesque village of Chawton and its literary connections also feature, and we share in the celebrations of 25 years of glorious gardening at the stunning West Dean Gardens.

A very special exhibition celebrating the life of one of Britain’s best-loved authors and illustrators features in the arts section, while there’s plenty of inspiration to visit idyllic National Trust places and spaces, which promise to be at their beautiful best during spring and summer.

Looking further afield, Cambodia and Vietnam provide travel inspiration in abundance – their unspoiled beauty, peaceful towns and cities rewarding visitors with a truly unique experience.

For gentlemen, discover grooming tips, style inspiration and the Car of the Moment in the Gentleman’s Notebook – our dedicated men’s section, which will feature in every issue.

On a final note, as editor, it is a pleasure to be a part of such a fresh, innovative and exciting publication, with a bright future ahead.

Enjoy the issue.

FRAN

CIS

BENA

LI Desire to achieveInterview by Henry Ascoli

fter only a few minutes in his presence, you cannot help but be inspired by Francis Benali - or Franny as he’s more affectionately known. His infectious smile, natural charisma and passion for life immediately make an impression.

This is a man who doesn’t do things by halves. A hard-tackling defender who made just shy of 400 appearances for Southampton FC, Franny’s hard-working attitude on the pitch is matched by his desire to achieve off the field.

Born and raised in Southampton, Franny played for his home town club for 16 years and eventually hung up his boots for the final time in 2004. Since then, he has divided his time between coaching, charity work and punditry, but above all, his family – wife Karen and children Luke and Kenzie.

Franny’s commitment to the club ensured he became a fans’ favourite at Southampton, and his many memories of his career on the pitch evidently remain at the forefront of his mind: “I cherished every moment of my career, from joining Southampton as a schoolboy to turning pro at 18 and making my debut in October 1988. But playing my testimonial in front of my friends and family was truly memorable – a very proud day for me.

“When you career comes to an end, it can be a difficult scenario – I was in the lucky position of being paid to play the game I love, and it’s a big adjustment when you do finally hang up your boots.

“More recently public/motivational speaking has become an area I wish to pursue more. I hope that my experiences can inspire other people in some way – especially the younger generation. I’m a firm believer that if you have the passion to do something and the determination to succeed, you can achieve anything you want.”

Last year, Franny was in the media spotlight for different reasons – a 1,000 mile charity run between every Premier League ground in just 21 consecutive days. Benali’s Big Run involved running an

Aaverage of 45 miles every day and raised more than £265,000 in aid of Cancer Research UK.

As a result of his incredible challenge, Franny was named Cancer Research UK Flame of Hope Award Winner for Fundraising Volunteer of the Year and JustGiving Celebrity Fundraiser of the Year.

“When you finish your playing career, obviously you want to stay fit, but the motivation and need is no longer there like it was before. So I needed a challenge – something to inspire me, ideally linked with my career in some way,” Franny explains.

“Cancer has affected our family in so many ways, so raising money and, more importantly awareness, for Cancer Research UK was a huge motivation for me. I was pushed to the very limits - both physically and mentally - but I was blown away by the incredible support of so many people. However, I still feel that there’s unfinished business in this respect, so there’s another challenge in the pipeline… more news on that soon!”

And as for the future? “I’ve lived in Southampton all my life, and I’ve never had any desire to move away – we’re

truly blessed to live in such a beautiful part of the world.

“Family has, and always will be, number one in my life – I’ll have been married 25 years next year to a beautiful lady who’s also my best friend, and I have two lovely children who mean the world to me.“I’ve been blessed with good health [touches wood] and although football has been a big part of my life, I don’t want to be defined solely by my career on the pitch. I still have so much more I want to achieve and a real hunger for life.”

Watch this space… To find out Franny’s availability for media work, motivational speaking and general appearances, email [email protected] or tweet @FrannyBenali

“WHEN YOU FINISH YOUR PLAYING CAREER, OBVIOUSLY YOU WANT TO STAY FIT, BUT THE

MOTIVATION AND NEED IS NO LONGER THERE

LIKE IT WAS BEFORE. SO I NEEDED

A CHALLENGE...”

What can you cut out of our life to lower your stress levels? If you’re volunteering your time at a local school or charity, does it fill your soul with joy or drain your already limited resources? Create a support system of friends, family, child minders etc so that you can outsource duties which are draining your health, time and energy.

The air in our homes can be up to five times more polluted that the air outside, so taking time to breathe in a green space can really help cleanse your body.

Caffeine gets us going on that stress/sugar roller coaster from the get go, which can lead to weight gain, mood swings and sleeplessness.Instead of your morning coffee fix, try dry brushing your skin after a shower - this stimulates the lymphatic system, and is so invigorating that you will feel wide awake without the need for a caffeine kick start.

Chemical FreeSynthetic chemicals found in toiletries, household cleaning products and food can seriously block your

colourful fruit and veg, hummus, cold water fish, organic poultry and eggs where possible, grain-free crackers, nuts and seeds, olive and coconut oil, herbal teas and unsweetened almond milk.

Spring is the perfect time to up your activity, so get out into the country or local park, and aim for at least 30 minutes per day of movement or exercise.Try something new such as Pilates or Yoga, get together with friends for a country ramble, or join the local gym.

All in the mindAre you a worrier? If so, write down your negative thoughts in a journal, and then write positive counterstatements for each. Also, at the end of each day, write down things you know went well or things you feel grateful for in your life. These strategies, done repeatedly, can help to detox the mind and lead to a greater sense of happiness and peace.

metabolism and may lead to weight gain and other health issues. Cutting out or even just reducing these toxins from your life can help remove hormone disrupting chemicals, so that you feel cleaner, more energetic and healthier. Read the labels on toiletry products and cosmetics, and avoid anything which contains parabens, phthalates, and sodium lauryl sulfate. Organic is the way to go where budget allows.

Rest and repairSleep deprivation can cause weight gain of around two pounds a week, and devices such as tablets, smartphones and laptops could be seriously messing up your shut-eye time by disrupting sleep-inducing melatonin levels. Steer clear of blue screens at least two hours before going to bed. If you really can’t resist devices in the evening, then have a look at some of the apps available for reducing blue light emissions. If you wear glasses, you can also get special filters to do the same – ask your optician for details.

Clear the cupboards, fridge and freezer of everything which is sabotaging your health – alcohol, crisps, biscuits, fizzy drinks, sugar, caffeinated products and ice cream. Fill them instead with health-enhancing foods – lots of

Quality local coverage, dedicated men’s section

Guildhall early light Winchester by Winchester City Council

WinchesterExploring

In recent years, the city has assumed a leading role in promoting local produce, independent businesses and innovative ideas, and its unique appeal allows independent venues and national chains to sit side by side, each offering a unique dining experience.

And after earning the prestigious accolade of ‘Best Place to Live in Britain’ from The Sunday Times, Winchester’s star can only continue to rise.

Tracy Nash, commercial manager of Hampshire Fare, explains: “Winchester boasts a vibrant and growing food scene serving up all sorts of delicious flavours from around the world. The city offers something for all appetites and tastes. There’s top quality pub food, tea and cake, fine dining, enticing street food, pizza and much more. Hampshire Fare works with the venues that are committed to sourcing their produce locally.”

Indeed, Hampshire Fare, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, has proved pivotal in the local food movement gaining momentum not only in Winchester, but across the county, encouraging producers to work together and create a greater strength in depth across the industry.

Naomi Beamish, who opened Forte Kitchen last year with her partner and head chef Olly Biggs, commented: “There is a great momentum building among independent food and drink businesses here in the city, and I think Hampshire Fare have been fantastic at championing our cause in every sense, but ultimately it also comes down to the loyalty of our customers and support from across the community.

“As Winchester is such a close-knit community, I think many of the new food venues are thriving mainly due to word of mouth – the most powerful marketing tool there is – and I think customers today appreciate quality, local food and places which are more fun and interesting.”

And Forte Kitchen has achieved just that: An informal eatery offering home-cooked, freshly-prepared and seasonal dishes – wholesome food and quality service “without fuss or pretention”.

Indeed, Forte undoubtedly satisfies the appetite for something a little less formal, joined by venues such as Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage Canteen and Michelin-starred The Black Rat in taking attention to detail to a new level, focusing on every aspect of the eating out experience.

Meanwhile, Hampshire Farmers’ Markets – now twice monthly – encourage visitors to sample the street food concept. A wide range of local foods are on offer to sample and buy, direct from the producer, with provenance and quality the top priorities.

Winchester’s traditional charm doubtless also plays its part – the city’s oldest house, the Chesil Rectory, is a truly unique and hugely popular venue, and there are a handful of charming tea rooms serving afternoon tea.

Alternatively, you can spice up your evening and sample cuisine from India, Thailand and Spain in some of the city’s most atmospheric buildings.

The Hampshire Food Festival annually visits Winchester, allowing visitors to delight in locally-grown delicacies, vineyard and brewery tours, farm walks and pop-up restaurants

among others, while Winchester Cocktail Week is shaking up the city with seven days of special events and masterclasses across the local area.

Whatever your taste, Winchester is sure to have something to suit every palette, and the city is fast becoming Hampshire’s gourmet hotspot.

From cosy pubs with roaring log fires to award-winning restaurants, there is a wealth of choice when eating out in Winchester.

Vineyards of Hampshire

Photos from Top: Forte Kitchen, Hot smoked mackeral at Forte Kitchen, River Cottage Canteen.

Hampshire is recognised globally as a key wine producing region. The county’s chalky soil and climate make it on a par with the Champagne region for growing conditions. Seven vineyards will come together during the Hampshire Food Festival this July to celebrate the award-winning wines being grown and produced on our county’s slopes. The Vineyards of Hampshire Wine Festival will take place at Hattingley Valley Vineyard on Sunday 17th July, 12-4.30pm.

The wine festival is an opportunity to tour the vineyard and winery, taste wines from seven Hampshire vineyards, meet the winemakers, find out more about the winemaking process and sample and buy local produce.

The festival involves Cottonworth, Danebury, Exton Park, Hambledon, Hattingley Valley, Jenkyn Place and Meonhill. Tickets are priced at £8 and can be booked in advance. Find out more at www.hattingleyvalley.co.uk/contact-us/#hospitality

Launched 50 years ago, Eau Sauvage has become one of the great classics in men’s fragrance. Absolutely wild and resolutely sensual, the first fragrance for men by Dior embodies the timeless elegance of the house, with a delicate balance between natural simplicity and elegance.

Dior’s first men’s perfume remains revolutionary for its simple audacity. Its world-class composition offers a perfect blend of crisp citrus notes and distinctly masculine woody undertones; an eternal favourite.

1. The Apple Watch Sport can keep track of your chosen exercise activity, and synced to an iPhone it’ll use the GPS and data connection to allow you to use the Strava app to share your bike rides on social media.

2. Cyclists love coffee right, so why not invest in a proper coffee machine so you can get a decent shot of espresso before you set off for a ride? Extracting the full flavour of whole coffee beans by grinding them directly into the filter, the process, from bean to coffee, takes less than a minute with this mean machine…

3. The GearUp OakRak Floor-to-Ceiling Bike Rack is easy to assemble, looks good and is a great way to store up to four bikes inside your house or flat where they’re safe and sound.

An intoxicating mix of cars, stars and motor sport royalty come together over four superb days for the Festival of Speed (Thursday 23rd – Sunday 26th June). The largest event of its kind in the world, the festival gathers together the planet’s rarest and most glamorous cars.

It all kicks off with press and preview day on Thursday for the latest road cars, while the rest of the weekend sees heritage cars taking on the 1.16 mile Hillclimb, which challenges the world’s greatest drivers and riders, including today’s Formula 1 and Moto GP stars. The Goodwood circuit will be graced by F1 drivers such as Jenson Button, Emerson Fittipaldi, John Surtees, Mark Webber and Sir Stirling Moss. Le Mans winners like Derek Bell and Richard Attwood will also attend, while Rallycross star Ken Block will be back to show off his skills.

From the fire-breathing turbo F1 cars to the crazy Group B rally cars, the giant aero-engined leviathans to the formidable two-stroke Grand Prix bikes, the 2016 festival will celebrate the theme of ‘Full Throttle - The Endless Pursuit of Power’.

Celebrating the centenary of BMW, the famous statue outside the Goodwood House will incorporate the BMW 328 Mille Miglia Roadster, the Brabham-BMW BT52, and the Le Mans-winning BMW V12 LMR.

There will also be plenty of thrills and spills on the Forest Rally Stage and in the Goodwood Action Sports arena, along with a host of aviation and air displays.
