the social and technological challenges of augmenting the abc’s archival collection: creating...
DESCRIPTION
Given the provocation that cultural institutions should be engaging in mobile platforms to provide the public with improved access to their archival collections, many institutions have been experimenting with hybrid projects. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) facilitated one experiment during 2011 to understand how it could leverage augmented reality (AR) technologies to promote public access to its archival collections. This presentation describes one ABC AR project, MyBurb. MyBurb was developed to publish ABC Australian suburban archives, while also encouraging users to contribute their personal collections to co-create an historical urban landscape. Burgess and Banks (2010) define co-creation as “the ways in which platform providers (however imperfectly) integrate user-participation into their own models of production” (2010, p. 298). Co-creation at the ABC aligns with its public service remit to foster national culture and engage the public sphere (Cunningham, 2013).TRANSCRIPT

The ABC has a rich archive of media documenting
Australia’s history in audio, video, photos and text. There
should be an archive project which digitises this media
and makes it available to the Australian public. The BBC
has invested heavily in making their archives available in
the Creative Archives project […] The ABC can also create
a living archive of content by collecting and collating User
Generated Content around large national events as well as
the everyday lives of Australians over time. This project
could be a collaboration with holders of state and national
archives. 2008 ABC and SBS Digital Futures Submission
Releasing Archives
[A] collaboration between ABC Innovation Creative
Development team and ABC Archives and Library
services. It aims to create a collection of ABC
archives (images and short video) and make them
available on ABC online (Radio National Pool site) and
on external platforms (Picture Australia and Flickr
commons) for the public to access.

Cultural Intermediation
• Bourdieu (1984) - intermediary between social groups and connections
• Negus (2002) - intermediary between production and consumption
• Intermediary between human and non-human actors producing cultural artefacts
• Relies on interactional expertise
Conclusion
Cultural Institutions facilitate public access to archives
Connected devices create new in-situ experiences
Complex negotiation process to facilitate institutional technological developments
Precisely the role of the cultural intermediary
