the smartest man in the world
TRANSCRIPT
Charlie Munger
So far in life, the closest person I have ever found to have most of the
answers is Charlie Munger.
He is the billionaire business partner of Warren Buffett. But more
importantly, many people like Bill Gates and Warren Buffett say
Charlie is the smartest person they know!
One of the most important books in my library, "Poor Charlie's
Almanack: The Wit and Wisdom of Charles T. Munger"
This is an amazing book filled with wisdom! Let's start with my favorite
quote...
"Wisdom acquisition is a moral duty. It’s not something you do just to
advance in life. As a corollary to that proposition, which is very
important, it means that you are hooked for lifetime learning. And
without lifetime learning, you people are not going to do very well. You
are not going to get very far in life based on what you already know.
You’re going to advance in life by what you learn after you leave here.
I constantly see people rise in life who are not the smartest, sometimes
not even the most diligent, but they are learning machines. They go to
bed every night a little wiser than they were when they got up and boy
does that help, particularly when you have a long run ahead of you...
...So if civilization can progress only with an advanced method of
invention, you can progress only when you learn the method of learning."
It should come as no surprise that "the smartest man in the world"
values learning above all else.
The one thing that stands out to me in this quote is how he emphasizes
lifelong learning and the importance of "learning the method of
learning."
What he's referring to is that most people will never achieve their true
potential because they never really learned how to learn.
These are the people, floating from topic to topic, being exposed to
tons of information but never really learning anything. Such a common
problem in today's fast paced world!
So... how do you learn to learn so you can be a lifelong learner?
My philosophy is to surround yourself with mentors who are smarter
then you are. The people who help you feel empowered, who motivate
you to succeed and the people who inspire greatness in you!
The hardest part about this is...
Most people don't have very many, if any motivating and inspiring
people around them. Which...
Can leave you feeling like there is no hope and make you ready to give
up on finding and living your own "Good Life." However...
I urge you to think about how lucky you are to live in the information
age. Where you can get direct access to people who are smarter then
you are. People who motivate and inspire you to take action and
become the person you know you should be!
Like I said in the beginning of the first email I sent you, I'm grateful that
you gave me the opportunity to be your mentor. Today's big lesson is...
Surround yourself with people who are smarter than you!
