interest in promoting the understanding and use of vaccines.

“this makes influenza prevention by healthy individuals who can pass it on to those at high risk for severe complications a necessity,” according to Dr. Shelly mcNeil,

vice chair of Immunize Canada. “Healthy individuals can shed the influenza virus and transmit it before they experience any symptoms. that’s why it is so important to get vaccinated against influenza every year.”

the NWHU says the vaccine is important to

prevent complications such as pneumonia, kidney failure, and heart failure in elderly people or those with chronic diseases.

the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) is recommending that every Canadian over six months old get the

flu shot.If you have had the

flu shot in previous years, you are not protected in years following. A new shot is developed every year to protect against three strains of flu, based on what strains are most likely to hit in Canada each winter.

Fridays and we utilize volunteers to come in and help with the lunch and different activities and help tidy up after lunch and visit with the clients.”

the agency is a local representative for Lifeline, an emergency response service for individuals living at home, which allows them to summon emergency services with the touch of a button.

Meals on wheels are hot meals provided by the hospital delivered five days a week.

Supportive housing services are provided 24 hours a day to clients living in Sioux towers and Patricia Plaza.

the program is for clients living independently who may require a bit of assistance in their day to day lives.

Doggett said there is a need in the community for the services the agency provides, adding there is a waiting list for supported housing services which she expects will increase in future years.

“If we are able to provide services like this and keep people in apartments where they are living independently with minimal support it keeps beds free at the hospital. It keeps the waiting list for extended care shorter so it is definitely an important asset in our healthcare system,” she said.

Peggy stewart has been a volunteer with the agency for at least 12 years.

She stated, “I’ve volunteered all my life. I enjoy helping people and

keeping busy.”she described

volunteerism. “It’s the best, best thing in the world. you get to know everybody and it’s good for you.”

Rachel George is a volunteer with the agency and said it has been a good way to get to know everyone at Sioux towers where she resides.

she is grateful supported housing is an option in Sioux Lookout.

She said volunteering

is something she believes is very important.

Althea George, another volunteer with the agency, concluded, “I just enjoy interacting with the seniors. most of them I know from years of living here and I just enjoy helping out. most of these people I’ve known for years. Volunteering is just so very, very important.”

October was Community support month in ontario.

Coming to an endWell my four years

as your mayor is coming quickly to a close and it has been the best four years of my political career. In the past four years it has been a total HIGH with all of the birthday parties, anniversaries, fund raising ventures and opening of new businesses as well as meeting you the public at all times. Sure there has been a few complaints that came across my desk but in the end they where all handled well with all parties being happy. the present council has been a great team and with the excellent senior staff we have come a long way in these past four years. Some of the most rewarding being the opening of the Museum

in the Heritage Railway station, the opening of the Centennial Center the change to the intersection at Front st and Wellington St. the construction of Seventh Ave., Second Ave. our Centennial year was also remarkable with several families returning from around the world to help us celebrate 100 years, the signing of the friendship accord with Lac seul, slate Falls and Cat Lake was another historical event which has shown that we are eager to work with our First Nation neighbors, and the most recent partnership with KI and Lac Seul for a distribution center for the delivery of fresh vegetables, fruit and milk to all of the Northern Communities which

when working will make Sioux Lookout the tRUE Hub of the north in conjunction with our state of the art Meno ya Win health centre. I wish the new council the best of luck for the next four years and am glad that we have left them in a good position to make this town progress. thanks again to all that have supported me and this council senior staff and all of our employees during this past term. Special thanks to my wife elaine who has stood by me all the time.

CO alarms mandatoryWith the passage of

Ontario’s new CO law – the Hawkins-Gignac Act – the Sioux Lookout Fire Services is relieved, knowing that Sioux

Lookout citizens are now much less likely to experience the types of tragedy that can result from exposure to the Silent Killer.

In 2008 John Gignac lost his niece Laurie, her husband richard, and their children Cassie and Jordan to carbon monoxide poisoning. the vent leading from their gas fireplace was clogged so the deadly gas seeped back into their home. they didn’t know they were in danger because CO gas is colorless, odorless and tasteless. And they did not have a carbon monoxide alarm.

But something good has come from something so tragic. this new law makes carbon monoxide alarms mandatory in all homes

that have a risk of carbon monoxide.

Now, no matter the age of a home, if it has oil, propane or gas burning appliances, furnace or water heater, a wood or gas fireplace, or an attached garage it must have working carbon monoxide alarms installed near sleeping areas. Also, Co alarms are required by law to be replaced within the time frame indicated in the manufacturer’s instructions and/or on the label on the unit.

Protect your family. Install a Co alarm today.

Boo at the BayChildren and their families, wearing their Halloween costumes, were invited to Cedar Bay last Thursday evening.

Event Coordinator Darlene Martelle shared, “What we decided to do this year is to just have a little Boo at the Bay for the younger kids… We’ve got pony rides. There are games out there for the kids to play while they wait and we always have hot dogs and goodies and stuff like that.” The evening included a bonfire and hay rides. The event was hosted by the Friends of Cedar Bay.

Supernatural story timeBoo! Sioux Lookout Public Library Assistant /Children’s Librarian Micheal Laverty delighted young trick-or-treaters with a reading of Rattlebone Rock during the library’s Halloween party. Kids were invited to scare a librarian and pick up a treat while they visited.

Ghoulish greetingsMylo Anderson and Camryn Dumonski welcomed visitors to the haunted house hosted by Nishnawbe Gamik Friendship Centre and the youth centre. While the younger crowd was invited to participate in age appropriate activities upstairs, a spine chilling scene awaited downstairs in the youth centre for individuals who dared to check it out.

A spooky sightVisitors to Tikinagan’s haunted house, situated at the training centre on Front Street, were ushered into a dark and scary maze filled with these creepy characters. As a reward for their bravery, everyone in attendance received a piece of candy on their way out of the building.

Workshop focuses on supporting area youthTim Brody

aSSociate editor

PRoVIDING young people in the area with the support

they need to succeed in life was the focus of a special workshop which took place at the Centennial Centre in Sioux Lookout october 28.

Put on in partnership by the Sioux Lookout Healthy Community task Force and HC Link, the workshop drew 46 participants from Sioux Lookout and nearby

communities Lac seul and Wabigoon.

George Hoggarth, a member of the healthy community task force, helped organize the day long workshop which was attended by representatives from education, social services, and youth justice organizations.

“this was about helping children and youth develop into healthy, resilient adults,” he said.

He continued, “What this workshop was

all about was helping people be familiar with what are the assets that kids in our community need, and inspiring people to look at ways in which they can help build these assets, both as individuals and organizations, or as community members or coaches, anything. the idea is that the more people that are out there creating these assets for our young people, the healthier those kids are going to be.”

Hoggarth defined these assets as support, empowerment, boundaries, and expectations, constructive use of

time, a commitment to learning, positive values, social competencies, and positive identity.

For example, he said, “one of them is to have family support. that means having a family that provides high levels of love and support.

“Another asset is that the community values youth so a young person can see that adults in the community value youth and that youth are seen as important.”

He added, “It can be something as simple as getting to know the names of the kids in your neighbourhood so that when you pass by

you can address them by name.”

Workshop participants brainstormed how the community could assist youth in each of the asset areas.

Hoggarth said the healthy community task force has five pillars, one of which is prevention.

At one of their meetings, members of the task force talked about prevention in the community and what could be done to help young people make healthy positive choices, rather than negative ones such as using alcohol or drugs to deal with their challenges.

“We came up with the idea that if we can help people have more assets by making the community more aware of what they need, and if you know what somebody needs, you’re more likely to be able to give what they need,” he commented.

Hoggarth said one of the members of the health community task force, Rhonda Konrad, is a member of the Lions

Club and knew someone who could speak on the matter.

Konrad explained, “I’m a Lions Club member so I’m quite familiar with Lions Quest itself which is involved in creating assets in youth and positive growth and reducing risk factors for children and youth.

“Lions Quest has a program that schools implement that is about how to create positive character qualities in children, anti-bullying. Just like you are teaching them their ABCs you are teaching them character growth. this is a program that Lions Quest does with trainers in the schools with teachers and they can add it to curriculum. Plus they create a positive school climate.”

she continued, “What happened was that last year I was sent from my agency, Kenora-Rainy River District Child and Family Services, and I was identified as the Developmental Asset trainer for my

agency because all CASs in the province embrace developmental assets. they sent down someone identified for each agency to be the developmental asset trainer for the agency. that’s where I met Patricia and that’s where I developed the links where she offered to do community based programing to assist all sectors in a community to mobilize youth assets.”

Patricia Howell-Blackmore, Director of Communications and Programs for

Lions Quest Canada – the Canadian Centre for Positive youth Development, was the presenter at Everyone’s an Asset Builder Community Workshop.

she commented, “I’m really encouraged. When we did the breakout activities, it was impressive the organizations in the community that were represented and the conversations that were happening among them. It was amazing to see the sharing and awareness building that we were able to achieve in

one day.“We also had

the opportunity to collaborate on a lot of things that are happening and wishes that we would like to see for the community.”

Howel l -Blackmore added, “When we talk about our hopes and dreams for young people we often find similar themes from parents and schools and communities and we also have similar concerns so when we can come together around those things and have a common language where young people are hearing

consistent messages from their families and caregivers as well as their schools and different interactions in the community… we’re really focusing on how

we can be constructive and how we can keep young people away from negative behaviors and really promote positive behaviours.”

Konrad concluded,

‟I was overjoyed by the turnout. We had a nice cross section of people from our community and some people that travelled from other parts of Northwestern ontario. I think that they came up with some doable, realistic ideas of how we can help our children and youth in our communities to be the best that they can be.”

Hoggarth stated, “I think it went really well. It’s inspiring when you hear examples of how asset building works. What happens when you get everyone together is you can build on everyone’s experience. It was really positive.”

Forty-six people attended the workshop in the Centennial Centre. Workshop participants take in presenter Patricia Howell-Blackmore’s messages.

Past Sioux Lookout resident earns Medal of BraveryShayla Bradley

Staff Writer

GREG van Langenhove, a former Sioux

Lookout resident, is one of Canada’s newest Medal of Bravery recipients.

the medal of Bravery recognizes acts of bravery in hazardous circumstances.

Van Langenhove was honoured for his assistance after the Arctic Sunwest plane crash in yellowknife three years ago that took the lives of pilots trevor Jonasson and Nicole Stacey.

Jonasson grew up in Sioux Lookout, graduating from Queen Elizabeth District High

School and working at the Hudson mill before getting into aviation. He flew for North Star Air in Pickle Lake for several years before moving to the Northwest territories.

Governor General David Johnston presented van Langenhove with the medal of Bravery at Rideau Hall in ottawa

october 21.“On september

22, 2011, Kent David Bissell, Roderick Brown, matthew Grogono, mike murphy, Sergio Rodriguez Sanchez, Allan Shortt, David Swisher and Greg Van Langenhove played a vital role in the evacuation of several passengers from a float plane that had crashed in yellowknife, Northwest territories,” read the Governer General’s citation.

“Without any thought for their own safety, the rescuers entered the aircraft and provided assistance to the victims. Despite the heavy smoke

coming from the engine, the leaking fuel, and the risk of explosion, they managed to bring the victims to safety.”

Van Langenhove

attended the ceremony with his family, including wife Patti, son Kevin, daughter samantha, and mother Norma Lang.

Trevor Jonasson, the pilot who died in a 2011 plane crash, previously lived and worked in Sioux Lookout and Pickle Lake.

A COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS PROGRAM

ADOPT – A – FAMILYYes, the holiday season is upon us once more. For most, this season is filled with joy, love, family and holiday treats. However, there are many who do not have the same fortune and for them Christmas is a difficult and sometimes painful time of year, but you can help.

Each year, many women who stay at First Step Women’s Shelter decide to break free from lives of violence and abuse. They decide that they want something better, that their children deserve something better. These women struggle with many obstacles, and we would like to invite you to join us in making Christmas a joyous time for these families.

The “Adopt A Family” program matches a sponsor with a woman and her children who have left the Shelter and are now living in our community, free from violence. The sponsor assists by providing the family with gifts and donations. The Shelter will provide the sponsor with a “Wish List” to assist with the shopping.

This is our 19th year of matching women and children in need with generous community members, families, businesses and organizations. We have over 20families who need to be adopted this year. We hope that you will be able to gain the true meaning of Christmas this year by helping someone less fortunate.

For those who are unable to sponsor a family but would like to make a contribution, donations will be gratefully accepted at the Shelter and then matched with a family in need or with the women and children who, due to violent home situations, are forced to spend their Christmas at the Shelter. We would also gratefully accept donations of non-perishable food and gift certificates. Income tax receipts will be issued for any monetary donations.

If you are interested in participating, or would like more information, please contact Laura at 737-1438.

Novice curlers learn new skill during weekend clinics

Shayla BradleyStaff Writer

CurLers of all ages took to the ice last

weekend, with a learn to curl clinic November 1 for adults and another session November 2 for

young athletes.the purpose of each

event was to demystify the sport for people who want to curl but do not know how, said Sioux Lookout Golf and Curling Club Manager Gus macLellan.

“It’s a chance for them to come out and learn about the game,” he explained.

New curlers were

also able to learn about correct techniques, he added.

this type of educational event is not a new endeavour for the club.

“We actually did a curling week last year,” macLellan recalled. “We put on a couple of different things, just to get people out there.”

the club is trying to run this type of programming every year. It is well timed, given that Sioux Lookout’s curling season officially opened over the weekend.

this year’s event was made possible with sponsorship from the Northern Ontario

Curling Associaton. the club was able to offer the event free of cost for participants.

“they had a budget, and if you apply, there are a few clubs across the region that receive funding,” said curling committee member JoAnne Van Horne.

MacLellan said he believes events like this are having a positive effect on membership levels, noting that the club is seeing more and more teams signed up for mixed league curling.

Van Horne said that so far 14 teams are signed

up for the Friday night mixed league.

“there is always room for more,” she added.

the club also offers mens and womens leagues.

“We’re hoping to get a business league going after Christmas,” said Van Horne. “that would be monday nights.”

the club has numerous events upcoming, including the Junior Regionals at the end of November, and hosting travelers Canada in February.

“those are two great, great events for our club,” said Van Horne.

Instructors guided curlers through a variety of drills, which helped students learn correct techniques and etiquette.

RemembeRing a Sioux Lookout WaR HeRo

Born in Transcona, Manitoba December 21, 1920, he attended high school in Leamington

Ontario from 1934 to 1940, while working seasonally for H.J. Heinz in 1938 and 1939. He enlisted in Windsor in 1940, where he commenced his flight training in May 1941. Upon graduation he was promoted to Sergeant, transported to England, and assigned to the Royal Air Force.

In the fall of 1942 he joined other Canadians in the RAF’s 81st Squadron in North

Africa as a fighter pilot flying Spitfires. He saw considerable combat in the ensuing months. He survived being shot down twice and in February 1943 was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. By the fall of Tunis in May 1943 he was an acknowledged “ace” with 5.5 victories included in his official record.

He was returned to Canada where he established himself as a highly

regarded flight instructor. However, in the spring of 1944 the Allies were desperate for experienced fighter pilots as air combat intensified in the build-up to the D-Day invasion of Normandy. As a result, F.O. Fenwick was reassigned to the RCAF’s 401st Squadron in Britain. He survived less than a month in his renewed combat role, being shot down for a third and final time on June 21, 1944 – an apparent victim of “friendly fire”. His family was living in Sioux Lookout, Ontario at the time of his death. Fenwick Lake in the Northwest Territories was named in his honour.

Flying Officer Fenwick was obviously a brave, determined young man who

answered the call with dash and vigour. A lot of life was packed into 23 short years. Although we can’t thank him, we can’t forget him, he did his part to make ours one of the world’s great countries.

F.O. Fenwick was one of the first to be buried in the Beny Sur Mer Canadian War

Cemetery. His gravestone reads:

Flying Officer HaRRy e. FenWick DFc

“In kind remembrance of one who gave all for his country,

you and I and peace.” Design layout by The Sioux Lookout Bulletin
