Last day for long serving postal workerKaren Boyco, Lead Hand at the Sioux Lookout Post Office retired Friday after 26 years of service.

“I am going to miss everyone, all the customers, my work colleagues and, in particular, the children because of the many office events I have done with children over the years. I really think it’s important for the Post Office to be part of the community and I will miss being involved.”

Town addressing flooding at Front St. and Third Ave.

Heavy rainfall the evening of June 23 caused massive

flooding at the corner of Front Street and Third avenue.

The Municipality of Sioux Lookout closed Front Street east of the intersection last week to excavate the road and install a new storm sewer pipe.

Public Works Manager andrew Jewell explained, “What we’ve done is we’ve moved the existing manhole and we’ve installed a three metre diameter manhole and that will allow us to twin the discharge pipe out of it. Before it was a single .75 metre discharge out of the manhole and now we’re

going to have two .75 metre discharge pipes out of the storm sewer on the other side of the road.”

The storm sewer pipe installation is a continuation of work begun on the intersection last year.

“What we’re doing right now is changing the pipe under the road. What we did last year on the south side of the road was we upsized the pipe that was there. It was a .9 metre pipe and we changed it to a 1.4 metre arch pipe. It increased the volume that can flow through it. This is the second part of the upgrade. We didn’t have time last year to do this component of the project so we’re getting it done this year.”

Charity golf classic honors the legacy of Harvey Friesen

Bearskin Charity Golf Classic which was held July 26 at the Sioux Lookout Golf and Curling Club, with proceeds going to the Sioux Lookout Meno ya Win Health Centre Foundation. This year’s event had a special significance, as it was held to honor the memory of Harvey Friesen, Past President of Bearskin airlines and a founding member of SLMHC who died suddenly on February 2.

Sponsored by Bearskin airlines and 31 other corporate organizations, both local and out of town, and with

the support of two local contributors, the tournament drew 120 ardent golfers who made up 30 teams, consisting of four players each, who spent a leisurely day shooting twice around the nine-hole golf course.

During the day some people set up a barbecue and the club golf car filled with cold drinks, driven by Sheila Suprovich and Janine Lavoie, was kept busy every 20 minutes as they drove around the course dispensing drinks to golfers. Lavoie commented, “It’s a good day and everyone seems to be enjoying the tournament. It’s sunny and warm so we have a lot of thirsty people.”

President of the SLMHC Foundation, Marnie Hoey,

shared, “Over the years, we have raised between 350 and 400 thousand dollars for health care and other related community activities. We are extremely happy with the number of people who turned up and the weather has been great.”

Foundation Executive Director Kathryn Davidson added, “We are very fortunate that Bearskin airlines is continuing to sponsoring the event and we look forward to continuing in future years.”

President of Bearskin airlines Brad Martin stated, “We are really happy to be hosting it again and this one is dear to all our hearts because it is in memory of Harvey

participants were positive. Anna Friesen said, “So far it’s been going well. at least the bugs aren’t bad.”

eleanor vachon, from out of town, commented, “This is my first time at this tournament. There are four of us women and we are having a great day. The tournament is well organized.”

al Molstad summed up, “It has been an excellent day. We have had a team in here for probably 10 years. Harvey was such a great supporter of the community and he made a lot of contributions to our town that people were probably not even aware of and

consequently it’s a great loss. This is a fitting memorial and legacy to his memory.”

The event concluded in the evening with a dinner and awards presentation held in the clubhouse. Golfers gathered in the dining room to enjoy a barbecue repast of steak, mashed potatoes, and mixed vegetables.

It was then time for the awards. Master of Ceremonies Rod Bosch opened by thanking everyone for participating and then auctioned off the main prize of a $3000 three day fishing trip which was sold for $1600 to Randy Henrickson.

President Martin

made a short speech thanking all the people who had helped organize the event. He said, “We are going to continue with the tradition of supporting the community that supports us in the spirit of Harvey.” He then asked all present to observe a moment of silence in honor of Friesen, finishing with, “We look forward to next year for the 17th Classic.”

Cliff Friesen spoke on behalf of the family. He thanked Bearskin for continuing to sponsor the event and everyone for participating.

The next speaker, Jason Friesen, also expressed the family’s

gratitude for the support given by participants and the many sponsors.

Martin and Ron Hell, Director of Sales and Marketing at Bearskin, then presented the main prizes in reverse order of third, second and first.

The winners were: Third - Madsen Motors Team, Niels Madsen, John Madsen, Pat Spadoni and George Badanai with a prize of golf travel bags; Second place Wasaya Team Craig Tosel, George Sakchekapo, Shane Sakchekapo and Jonathan Mamakwa

who won golf bags. The First prize went to the Molstad Realty Team of al Molstad, John Bailey, Ben Hancharuk and Glen Price. They received leather jackets.

This was followed by the presentation of nine contest prizes by Bosch and Margie Boyecheko, assistant to the vice President of Operations at Bearskin. a barbeque had been raffled off and the winner announced by Bosch was Dennis Brock.

The final event of the evening was the presentation to Hoey and Davidson from the Foundation of a cheque for $36,000 by President Martin which was the total amount of money collected on the day. Seniors activity centre hosts annual fish fryGeoff ShieldsstAff Writer

THe Sioux area Seniors activity Centre held its

annual fish fry last Wednesday evening. The event drew 62 members who gathered to enjoy the company of old and new friends while enjoying a meal of fish, potato salad, homemade pork and beans, carrot salad

followed by dessert with tea or coffee.

Treasurer eileen Jeffery commented, “It’s our annual fish fry for members and it has been a great turnout. everyone looks forward to it every year and it’s a very good way to socialize and for some members they meet people they have never met before.”

Club President Bob Weaver added, “It was a good turnout. We had

a few more people turn up than last year and

hopefully everyone enjoyed themselves.”

It was good to enjoy the company of old and new friends.

How’s it working out?an old high school

friend asked how I’m doing with my diet. When I wrote back he replied that I should share the story. So...

everything is going swimmingly. I’m doing very well. Thanks for asking, Pal.

It has become more apparent to me that I’m engaged in two related, but separate, challenges. One is alcohol use, the other is eating and dietary stuff.

It’s been just under two weeks since starting. So far I’ve lost three pounds and have not had a single drink of alcohol, nor even the hint of a sniff of alcohol vapors rising from a little glass of libation.

My outlook is aimed forward, not allowing a lot of dwelling on the past. I’ve smoked, and drank and eaten over the years in ways that have helped me achieve a high ranking for indulgence in all those categories. It’s been good, and I’m proud of it. I’ve had a great run. Now, it’s time to find some new pleasures and challenges, and I’m convinced I’ll

do that with the same determination and joy as before.

I’m on the search for different barbeque recipes, though I can incorporate a lot of my favorites right now and just eat moderate portions (I think. I’m still wandering in a bit of a fog through all the diet plans and approaches to healthy eating). I know already that a burger made from three kinds of chopped up mushrooms and onions and garlic and eggs and a couple of my favorite seasonings isn’t going to the top of my favorites list (and that’s the only thing on the list at the moment).

On the other hand, I have made a mixed drink (Caesar, but Bloody Mary would work as well, I think) using Clamato juice, lemon slices, olives, dill pickle spears, small tomatoes (or big ones cut into smaller chunks), tabasco, Old Bay seasoning that is so good your socks will fly off as you sip it. (I also drink some club soda with lemon slices in my favorite scotch glass which works fine). I think attitude goes a

long way.Saturday I had a six-

hour boat cruise. It’s part of a trip I do, along with two other Rotary friends, in which we auction off this outing for four couples. It’s an hour and a half cruise each way out to a friend’s island camp on Minnitaki where we hang out for three hours and enjoy drinks and a top notch meal (this year - about six different hors d’oeuvres, including deep fried halibut fingers from a fish one of the guys caught on a British Columbia trip a couple weeks ago, standing rib roast with early potatoes and vegetables, two kinds of salads, two desserts (pecan pie and rhubarb crumble), unlimited wine and margaritas). extravagant!

Knowing this particular afternoon/evening would be a special temptation I tried to figure out how I’d handle the drinks, and came up with the idea of mixing a big batch of my good ol’ Caesar in a pickle jar I had handy, figuring it would contain everything and be the equivalent volume of several drinks and I could drink right from the jar and then easily eat all the debris (pickles, olives, etc.) right out of the wide-mouth jar when the juice

ran low.as you might imagine,

there was quite a bit of good natured banter when I hauled out my drinking vessel as everybody wanted to know, “What the hell is that?” They all knew my program so I was able to tell them in my most distinctive, pseudo-indignant manner, “I call it a Shirley Temple and it’s very, very good.” (I have since renamed it the “Cisco Kid.”)

after a few minutes of occasional jokes, curiosity got the better of a couple people as they saw me obviously enjoying my drink and they wondered if they might try a sip - just to see what it was like. Pretty soon my pickle jar was passing around the group like the communion cup at a Baptist revival. It was cool! Pretty much turned what could have been a bummer, can’t drink, into a fun little event

that everybody got a kick out of.

Doubt if I made any converts (which wasn’t my intention, anyway), but I’ll bet it contributed some influence in case anybody else wants to quit drinking sometime.

So, everything is going fine. I’m well aware that two weeks represents only a tiny step, but I’m there and pretty happy about it.

I wrote this almost exactly a year ago, shortly after my diagnosis of diabetes, realizing some immediate lifestyle changes were necessary.

Since then I have lost 50 pounds, brought the diabetes under control, conquered the high blood pressure that has plagued me for my entire adult life, discovered some wonderful new food recipes and barbeque treats, and am enjoying enormous energy and enthusiasm lost long ago.

It’s been a trip! a good one!

of June 19 raises an important question, which SLaRC and all Canadian society must grapple with. essentially, how do we go about working towards a truly fair, truly just future, given the inequities of past and present?

Programs that give assistance or priority to members of disadvantaged groups (popularly known as affirmative action) represent just one possible way of addressing the wrong of racial inequality. This approach, as Ms. everson’s concerns

demonstrate, is not fail-safe or free from controversy. But neither is it ill-advised or illegal.

In SLaRC’s case, we have decided to accept funding that is designed (much like the aboriginal youth entrepreneurship Program, also profiled in June 19’s paper) to support First Nations

people’s ambitions to work in, belong to, and rightfully excel in an economy, and a society, that have historically been built on Indigenous backs, without Indigenous voices.

as the board of the Sioux Lookout anti-Racism Committee, we stand behind our choice,

and this approach, as one among many in the fight for justice. But irrespective of any differences of opinion upon this or any issue, we entirely agree with Ms. everson’s invitation: let us keep talking.

“It will increase the volume of water that

can flow through the system now. CN has a small component of the project as well to complete. They have a discharge pipe underneath the tracks on the south side and

they will be upsizing that as well. apparently they will be starting on that in about a week,”

Jewell said.He noted that the

amount of rain that fell around 5 p.m. on June 23 was unusually high and proved to be too much for the system to keep up with as it was.

Jewell stated, “The design of the system can handle storms. I know with this storm we got over an inch of rain within a very short period of time and I don’t know if any type of system can handle that amount. If we ever get conditions like that again, even

with all this upsizing, it will definitely help move more water, more quickly, but whether it will solve the problem, I don’t know. Major storms could still cause problems. However the water should drain much more quickly.”

Jewell expects the road closure to continue through this week to complete the project.

“We apologize for the inconvenience, but hopefully it will be a big improvement to the storm water system,” he concluded.

HeLLO, booshoo, wachiya. Good afternoon and

welcome my fellow graduates, principal and teachers, family and friends. It is a great honour to be here. My name is Mariah McKay and I am a member of Wunnumin Lake First Nation. I’m not gonna say much. Never in a million years did I think I would be standing here in front of you all.

I almost refused when they asked me, because I am not an outspoken person. I’m shy, just kidding, I once was told that I’m more like a firecracker, when you light it you know what happens. But then I thought about it. I think it’s all about conquering my fears and growing through these kinds of challenges. I was told I can speak in my own language as well.Which

I am grateful to do. I speak fluently well in my language I can read and write. I was told to keep my traditional values alive, including the cultural. I know that the youths are quickly losing their language. I am a mother of five and a foster mom to two. I try to speak to my children in my language. This was my gift and I should use.

I remember seeing a

list of Wahsa courses available around my community and there was one course that caught my attention. I knew it would be difficult but I wanted to take the challenge. During this school year, I tended to slip/give up on this course. It was the last course I needed to graduate. With the constant bugging of Janey McKay and Barb Carpenter and the other

Wahsa staff I was finally able to push myself to get it done and here I am.

all of these grads that you see here today have gone through the same kind of challenge. I’m sure many of us have responsibilities in the community and with our families and with our jobs. I know that it was hard for me to find the time to work on my school work and

INSPECTIONInspection of Approved Aerial Herbicide SprayingEnglish River, Wabigoon and Dryden Forests

The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) invites you to inspect the MNRF-approved aerial herbicide spray projects. As part of our ongoing efforts to regenerate and protect Ontario’s forests, selected stands on the English River, Wabigoon and Dryden Forests (see map) will be sprayed with herbicide to control competing vegetation, starting on or about August 1, 2014. The herbicide VisionMax, Pest Control Product registration # 27736 will be used.

The approved project description and project plan for the aerial herbicide project is available for public inspection at the Resolute FP Canada Inc. and Domtar Inc. offices and on the MNRF public website at ontario.ca/forestplans beginning July 1, 2014 until March 31, 2015 when the annual work schedule expires. Ontario Government Information Centres at Toronto and the appropriate communities of the MNRF Region and/or area offices provide Internet access.

Interested and affected persons and organizations can arrange an appointment with MNRF staff at the MNRF District or Area office to discuss the aerial herbicide project.

assignments. I really had to push myself in order to excel. at times I felt overwhelmed by the work I had to do. But, in the end it I felt I did it

that feeling. Today we will all

receive our diplomas and getting ready to achieve more goals as we walk our journey. I advise you, please do not stop here.

Continue to seek more and continue with the education. The children look up to us as the role models.

The message I want to bring here is whether if you are struggling with your personally daily lives, your jobs, ect. We have that power

to accomplish what we want in life. all you have to do is believe in yourself. as for me I struggled as I go along with my path. I have high and lows in my life. But, that didn’t stop me from trying to reach my goal. If I can do it you can do. It does not matter

how life treats you. Just push yourself harder to reach your goal.

I would like take this moment on behalf of myself and my fellow graduates we thank those special people that bought us here. Believing in us. I personally like to thank

my husband for being there for me in time of my needs. Without him. I wouldn’t be standing here. also my friends and family thank you from the bottom of my heart. and lastly, I would like to thank to those who are not here to celebrate my special day.

On behalf on my fellow graduates, I would like to thank you all for being here today to celebrate with us on this special day. The amount of support that we got has been amazing. Now it’s time to receive our awards after the hard work we did during this school year. Congratulations to each and every one of you. My fellow graduates.

PIPER: Good evening and welcome to our

Grade 8 Graduation ceremony. We gather here tonight to celebrate the end of our journey through Sacred Heart School. We’ve all come a very long way since our first kindergarten moments. From sandboxes to desks, from colouring homework assignments to the long eQaO testing. We’ve all made it through Grade 8 successfully and now we embark on our journey to high school.

Lindsey: We all have cherished moments from our life at Sacred. I remember walking into Grade 1, and soon to Grade 2. I remember going to Grade 3 with the 94 pack crayons. you were considered the King of elementary School. The years passed by and now we are standing in front of you all tonight as Grade 8 graduates. We stand here proud of our accomplishments. We wouldn’t be successful without the teachers and the ea’s who helped along the way.

Piper: The journey to Grade 8 was difficult for sure, but now we have the courage to continue onward. Life holds new experiences for all of us, new laughs and new cries. New rough seas and smooth roads, but we are all excited to experience every moment of it. There may be times when it feels like the world is crumbling around us, like we are losing grip of everything that kept us strong, but we need to remember that after every rain storm there is sun and after every winter there is spring. all of our dreams are within reach, but it’s up to us

to reach out a hand and grab them.

Lindsey: We have now completed our final year in Sacred Heart – after about 10 years, I’m sure we’re all ready to move on to high school. We’ll definitely miss the memories we had in this school. We want to say thank you to our principals – Mrs. Saari, who has retired. Our current principal, Mrs. MacLellan, and vice Principal Mrs. vinczeffy. also, a huge thanks to our Grade 8 teachers, Ms. Briska and Mrs. Savoie for making this year as amazing as it was. Finally, thank

you to our parents. The ones who would have to literally drag us out of bed to go

to school, the ones who have loved and supported us throughout the years.

Now, we must carry on with our lives, and we appreciate everyone who helped us learn

and grow. Both: Thank you Sacred

ZAC - Our friends and students, those of us that

have been in this school since Kindergarten or any other grade. every week for five days we drive to school and go to classes for six and a half hours. During these hours we socialize with friends and even staff members. every year we may lose friends and have the chance to make more. Some of us are even lucky enough to stay friends since Kindergarten.

Mac - On behalf of the graduating class of 2014, we’d like to thank everyone that has helped us make it through our years here. We thank the teachers, ea’s principals, parents and everyone else who has been in this long journey of school with us. and a special thank you to Ms. Weasly, who is leaving after

four years with us, other teachers have left before her but I am sure we will all miss her greatly. Because she was not only a faculty member, but a friend who did not hesitate to say she loves us.

Zac - Being at school is not just about school work. We have all had fun during these many years. Like in Kindergarten when we played at the water table, or when we tried to grow our own apple and orange trees in the mud. We also became parents to butterflies in senior Kindergarten. Back in Grade one when everyone want to have Mrs. Burch’s son named after them. We listened to elvis throughout Grade 2. In Grade 3, when Gilligan’s Island became our favorite show that year. We played with our class pet geckos and met Mrs. Bruce chickens in Grade 4. Grade 5 was a weird year, we had three

different teachers and never knew if we’d get a new teacher the next day. In Grade 6 someone was always getting in trouble. The year following the classes in the intermediate wing were very crowded so the staff came up with the idea of two classes for Grade 7 and two classes for Grade 8.

Mac - And finally Grade 8, Mrs Craig had her baby girl and is now on maternity leave. To us this school year was a blur. It feels like every day we had full bins of sharpies and paper wrapped desks. This year was a good year for our sports. We won the baseball tournament and did well in Track and Field. We have definitely come a long way from arguing over crayons even though we do sometimes.

Zac - and now as we finish elementary school, we are getting ready to enter high

school for the next four years following we will go through what people say “will be the best years of your life”. We know that it will be hard. We will lose and separate from friends. We

will go through heart break, tests and exams. Mainly we will make mistakes and be forced to learn from them and move on.

Mac - But the long

journey of life is just beginning. We wish good luck to every student sitting up on that stage today and to those who will be sitting up there after us for the years to come.

BO O z H O O e v e r y o n e ! Welcome to the

Lac Seul First Nation graduation. This is especially important because we have all three schools united for the first time.

My name is Sage Mamakeesick, but my spirit name is Migizi Wabi. I`ve been going

to this school since it opened.

When the school opened around fall 2010, I knew it would improve education in the community. I was excited to see the kids learning, having fun and making new friends. The school has improved over the years and will continue educating our students.

I enjoyed being

here, learning with the teachers and my classmates. My friends here helped me get through school and getting an education.

Mr. Korobanik was my fifth and sixth grade teacher. He taught me a lot about Greek mythology and helped me understand math more.

Mr. Kejick has been my teacher for Grades 7

and 8. It was fun being in his class, especially when everyone had a great time. He introduced skiing and golfing to me, which I liked doing and I will continue playing these sports.

Of course school wouldn’t be awesome without my classmates. Over the years I experienced a ton of memories. Our Grade 6 trip to Winnipeg to visit the forks was awesome. It was funny when we had to sleep in a giant lasagna. In Grade 7, we travelled to Toronto and Niagara Falls. It was an amazing experience. We experienced many new things there like Canada`s Wonderland, Niagara Falls, the Eaton Centre, the Hockey Hall of Fame and staying in a university dorm.

Now that our elementary milestone is completed we will all start our learning journey into high school. This is where we will learn many more things in our

teenage years. I used to think high school was scary and challenging, but my teachers have taught me many things. I now feel excited, a little anxious, but ready for my next journey.

I want to thank all the teachers, the staff of Obishikokaang elementary including our old teachers at Hudson Public School. I want to thank my parents and my family for providing me

a wonderful rewarding school experience. I especially want to thank Matthew Bingius, who has been my first friend throughout school and hockey years.

On behalf of the graduating class of 2013/14 I want to thank you all again! We learned so much together and we are ready for grade nine.

WeLCOMe, booshoo. Thank you to all our guests, family

members and friends for joining us in our school graduation celebrations. I would like to start by saying, thank you. It is such an honor to be this year’s valedictorian. Personally, I just want to say thank you to the graduating class for giving me this opportunity to share a few things about our years at Pelican Falls First Nations High School.

Throughout the years we, the graduating class of 2014, have gained a great deal of knowledge and understanding of various concepts that we will need for the future. We have been taught important teachings first hand by our teachers, coaches, and house counsellors, not just with school work and lessons, but also with social and leadership lifestyle skills. We just want to thank the staff for everything they have done to help us and especially, for all the time they gave to teach us.

Firstly, I acknowledge that I am not more

intelligent than my peers, I am only good at what I am expected to do, and working the educational and centre system. While some sat in class and doodled to refine their artistic skills, later to become great artists, others would come to class without their homework done, because they were reading about topics of interest to them, and others were creating music and writing lyrics, all while learning what the teachers taught. Today, students must know how to do multiple things at once to succeed.

and all of this knowledge will no doubt be valuable as we go forward in life. But I think that the most important thing that we have learned over the last four to six years is the Seven Grandfather Teachings, Leadership, setting good examples and working together as a community. Over the next few minutes, I’d like to talk about what we’ve learned, the people we have to thank, and the people we have to remember. I told you that the most important thing that we

learned was The Seven Grandfather Teachings in our community.

Let me give you just a couple of examples of what I’m talking about.

In the past years, an elder, Ms. Juliet Blackhawk, came to our classes every two weeks to teach us the meaning of every Grandfather teachings. She taught us that if you don’t put the Truth in what you’re speaking and doing, under each Grandfather teaching, it just won’t work out for you. So, in anything you do, be sure it is the Truth you put in at

all times.another example is

traditional medicine and outdoor teaching. In the past years, there is this class that teaches young students how to recognize medicine and what it is used for. This class goes outdoors to be taught on what is what and which is which. This class also makes traditional arts and crafts. all of this is what makes me proud to see. Thank you Mr. Hunter and Patty.

Moving on… I remember that, when we first came to high

school, we looked so young and shy. We would only hang out with our community members. Now today, we aged and look older, (or do we?) We would wake up with

dark spots under our eyes. you could probably still see the dark spots.

Speaking of young, our first year of high school was filled with some periods of trouble. It

was a tough time, we all had the feeling of wanting to go home, it was lonely, heart breaking, and we worried a lot. Our thoughts were overpowering at times, we yelled, we fell, we cried, we felt miserable, lost, and had times of depression. Our parents had a hard choice to let us go and even watch us stumble at points. They cried for us after when we said good-bye. Remember that feeling of being drifted apart from your family? I can still picture it, can you guys

too? entering the plane, propellers spinning, loud noise, wheels pulling away from the runway, then, that sudden silence. I remember seeing students cry in silence, as their hearts slowly beat slower and slower, but in time, returning to normal as they slowly accepted beginning their educational journey…… While we were in the air, our parents drove back to their homes in silence. We struggled with wanting to go back home. We cried in silence, we kept

wishing the school years would go by quickly. It was hard though, but all the graduates here, continually, stood up and continued to walk forward and pushed past our challenges. We participated in activities to distract us from our loneliness such as sports, extra-curricular club, we travelled, explored, and experienced new things. Thank you, Mr. Hordy, Ms. Hardeman, Ms. Davis, Ms. Landheer, and all the staff of Pelican Falls, especially to our Principal who gave us endless opportunities!

We earned trust, reputation for our names, awards.

and… Here we are. We have now accomplishing that goal. We are graduating. We should look at this as a positive experience, especially being at the top of our school.

Our time as Pelican Falls students is almost up. after today it’s going to be the end of our high school journey for us. We will have no more time on our high school clocks, no more moments to cherish and thoughts to

ponder. I have about six more minutes to spend with all of you, that is about as much I have left, but how can someone compact four to six years of life in six minutes? Well, time is like a stormy ocean, you can never predict when it will subside and even when it seems to be over, the eye of the storm fools you and sends you back into the middle of the chaos. Remember that if this is the first lesson I can give you, learn to never be fooled by time. Time can change your whole life without warning. a day in the life of an average person is worth less than a second on a man’s death bed. If you can realize how valuable each second of your life is then you will reap the rewards that those precious moments have to offer. So cherish these high school years guys.

For those of you that will continue to sit in desks and yield to classroom ideologies of instructors do not be disheartened. you still have the opportunity to stand up, ask questions, be critical,

and shape your own perspective. Demand a setting that will provide you with intellectual capabilities that allow you to expand your mind instead of directing it. Demand of yourself, show an interest in class lessons. The day of believing, “you have to learn this for the test,” is not good enough. education is an excellent tool when properly utilized. Focus more on learning rather than getting good grades.

For those of you that work within the system that I am referring to, I do not mean to insult; I intend to motivate. you have the power to change the incompetencies of this system. I know that you did not become a teacher or administrator to see your students bored. you cannot accept the authority of the governing bodies that tell you what to teach, but, you can shape how you teach it, our potential as students, is at stake.

Lastly, to the graduates, whether it’s hard to believe or if the reality has not sunk in

yet, we are closing the door on our childhood innocence. No longer can we try to get away with being viewed as children, making childish mistakes. We from now on will be judged as adults, whom have made childish mistakes. This, ladies and gentlemen, is our last day as children!!! (eh how about that? We don’t get older, we get younger?)

Spending some time in this place by ourselves in the past few days and now in our last few minutes has made me think of the finest moments I have ever shared with others. But remember when I mentioned that time causes people to change, it can cause change for the best or the worst. as eleanor Roosevelt said, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” Keep chasing your dreams guys and never give up.

Congratulations to the Graduates!

To all graduating students and adult graduates

of the KPDSB:

I have taken the liberty of including in my congratulations message for all graduates, those who found completing high school a journey of its own. Over the course of this

year, and for many of you I suspect, the course of a number of years, you have likely had periods of wonder, question, and at times perhaps uncertain-ty as to whether graduating was going to happen. For others, graduating this June has come relatively easy, with minor or little setbacks. In either case, you have made it, and whether you have lots of support from those around you, or felt like you made it against the odds, the reality is that you have done it! Congratulations!!!!

But my comments to you are this, and mean even more coming from the North, where so often our challenges are even more profound. If you have made it this far, then perhaps you are willing to go a little further? With an Ontario Secondary School Diploma in hand, you now have set yourself up for even more possibilities. If you are not interested in university, then perhaps you are interested in attending a trade program, an apprenticeship, or applied skill. I see more and more of our graduates earning a trade, and earning a living, a good living, very soon after they complete college or their diploma. If you plan on attending university, I ask you to consider how might your chosen field be able to contribute back to Northern Ontario? I ask you, because the North needs our young people to advocate and represent our interests, now more than ever!

For those graduating and representing themselves, their families, but also their communities…be proud of what you have done. If you come from Sandy Lake or Bearskin Lake as examples, you have made your entire communities proud! And lastly, I ask you to consider your teachers and staff that have been there for you; and even more so, your parents and loved ones who in their own way, have not only worried about this day possibly being within reach, but are so proud of you that words sometimes are not enough to tell you.

FIRST of all I would like to say hello to each and every one.

Special thanks goes to my friend Kaitlin Marshall who nominated me to represent the class of 2014 and also to my classmates for selecting me.

Welcome parents, guests, friends, staff and fellow grads. We are here today to celebrate the fruit of our hard labour, to remember and thank all those who helped us throughout high school right to the moment when we will soon walk across this stage, diploma in hand. you see, my friends, four years have come and gone and here we are graduating (Its ok. you can clap now. It’s a well-earned accolade and honour).

I must say congratulations to all grads: We did it! Congratulations to our parents: you’ve watched us grow, mature and hopefully become a little more independent. Hopefully. No more

Mom, where is my food? Mom, where is my shirt? Mom, where are my keys? Grandma this, Grandpa that, Mom this, Mom that or Dad where is Mom? Just kidding dads. To the teachers, whether retired or not, I must say congratulations and thank you for all the guidance, support, understanding and commitment to encouraging us and seeing the best in us. I imagine there may have been times when you resented all the lates, the absences, the overdue assignments, all the chatting, and worst of all, the texting when we were supposed to be working. However, despite what must have been annoyance for you, we, your students, are here today to graduate, and we are very happy to say that you have done your job very well. To our office staff members, from our principal and vice-principal Mr. Poling and Mr. Mercer, Mrs. Cosco, Mrs. ariano and Mrs. Roy for looking

after us and keeping us on the radar, if you know what I mean. Not to be forgotten, the school nurses, the librarian, the maintenance and custodial staff for being there when we needed you. and no, I have not forgotten our dear guidance councillors Ms. Campbell and Mrs. MacRae, who were always ready to help, whatever our concerns were; me must not forget that. Trust me, they helped me a lot. My

friends, all these people guided us, nudged us in the right direction and kept us on the path that led to this point. Don’t get me wrong, we did most of the work, but they assisted us in every way possible to succeed and stay motivated.

Studying here at Qe, I must say, was wonderful. Meeting people who became close friends, and being in fun and interesting classes where we made memories we will cherish forever.

September, Ms. King and many more; drawing and painting with Mr. Hildebrand; interesting labs with Mr. Kiepek and Ms. Wilson playing Rubik’s cube with Mr. Osmond and out-door ed trips… oh, those outdoor ed trips. Mr. Culham, do you still remember when you had me sleep in a quinzee, when I had only just arrived from the wonderfully tropical Philippines, and I had never even seen snow before?! yes, it was cold: freezing cold. Fun times, eh? Cold and fun times. But hey, we all survived that, and so many other things. yes, in four years at Qe we have been left with so many wonderful memories, I wish I could share them all.

although we had a great time here at Qe, we also have been through difficulties. Sometimes we failed a class or wanted to give up when we faced challenges in our courses (mathematics). We

procrastinated, saying we’d get our assignments done tomorrow; knowing full well that the due date was a month ago. My friends, these were the moments when you and I, we stumbled and fell. What did we do when we stumbled and fell? Did we rush and jump up hoping no one noticed? Did we become more aware and concerned about what others thought? Were we able to learn and grow from these set-backs? Let me ask you my fellow grads: did you get up when you fell? Did you get up? yes, we got up and moved forward; and thank goodness we got up, otherwise we would not be here wearing caps and gowns. and I am not just saying these things, I myself stumbled and fell. I failed the Ontario Literacy Test not just once, but twice; so you my friends are being represented by a person who according to our provincial standards

could not read and write! Take that OSSLT!

If there is one thing I’ve learned at this school, it’s that success is not always easy. There are problems and difficulties we face as we strive for our goals. But I once heard somebody say, “If you don’t have a problem you must be dead.” Problems are always part of our life therefore we must overcome each one of them. When we fall, we must dust ourselves off and carry on, knowing full well that no matter how many times we fall, each and every time we pick ourselves up will bring us closer to success. But there is more to it than that; we had some help reaching success, didn’t we? I was able to get up because someone extended a hand to me: my family, teachers, the staff, you my friends, all helped me up and sent me on my way again. This I will never forget.

So one last time: let us help each other out. Kaden, let me help you get on your feet. My friend, see alana beside you? Help her up. Keep it going. Bring your neighbour back to their feet. ask them to help each other until we are all standing together, and stronger for it. Parents, elders, teachers and staff, I encourage you to help each other up. We should all be on our feet celebrating this moment together. (Oh, a standing ovation. How kind of you).

Four exciting, crazy years here at Qe; four awesome, wonderful years. Four long, long, long, long years we spent together. But let me tell you my friends: I would not want it any other way. I’m grateful to you all. Congratulations again, and good luck with all your future endeavours.

Use your leadership, clinical and development skills to assist adults with mental health and addictions issues in both an inpatient and outpatient setting.

Qualifications:

• Master's degree in psychology or social work preferred (an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered)

• Two to five years direct service provision in the field of mental health and addictions

• Preference will be given to individuals with a minimum of two years extensive and recent experience in a supervisory role

• Expertise in the areas of mental health, mental illness, addictions and group work

• Excellent communication, time management, and organizational skills along with expertise in diagnostic and psychosocial interventions

• Training in suicide intervention, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention and First Aid

• Knowledge of services available in the Kenora Rainy River District

• Possess active registration, in good standing, with a professional college

• Have a valid Ontario driver’s license with unlimited access to a vehicle • Demonstrates behaviours consistent with Dryden Regional Health Centre’s Standards • Demonstrates DRHC Core Values; accountability, integrity, humility, compassion and respect

HIDDEN LAKE LANDFILL SITE TIPPING FEE CHANGES

At the regular Council meeting held May 21, 2014,

Council passed the following resolution(s) with respect to Waste Management:1. Elimination of fees for Yard Waste for all users: costs associated with the acceptance of Yard Waste will

be recovered through general taxation.2. Increase tipping fees by 3.05% for all accepted waste currently subject to tipping fees.

The above noted changes will come into effective July 1, 2014.

Please note the following:In accordance with By-law No. 46-03, Yard Waste (refuse) is defined as

Garden Cuttings, Leaves, Twigs, Branches, Brush, Tree Limbs and Shrubs.Any load of "Yard Waste" containing items other than the defined items above

will either be rejected or subject to current tipping fees.

Rules:1- One parent or guardian and one kid under the age of 18 2- This is a catch and keep tournament.3- You are only allowed to possess walleye no other species can be kept. 4- Fishing will take place on MAPB lakes (Minnitaki, Abram, Pelican and Botsford) 5- When you pay to register you will receive a motor tag for your boat. Your team

number will be on this tag and that is the position your team will leave.6- All boats will be divided into odds and evens at the dock. Look for large orange

sign on the front of the dock. 7- All boats must be at the town dock before 7:45 AM, but there will be no boat

check.8- Boats will be released at 8:00 AM sharp in pairs by a release boat with large

orange numbered placards. 9- Limit is 4 walleye, 1 over the slot size and 3 under OR 4 under slot size. 10- Slot size for MAPB is 46cm to 53cm, all fish caught within this size must be

released.11- Your team will be given a bump board so all teams are using the same measuring

device.12- All fish must be kept on ice and in a cooler, no live wells can be used. 13- You must return by 2:00 PM for weigh in. 14- The scale will be open at noon. 15- You will receive a bag at the dock to put your fish into, than you will proceed up

to the weigh station.16- All fish will be measured, weighed and given back to participants.17- BBQ will be provided from 3:00 PM to 4:00 for participants and volunteers at no

charge.18- Cash payout for top 5 boats based on number of entries.19- If there is a tie involving the top 5, the two cash amounts will be added together

and split between both teams. 20- Payout is 80% of entry fees, 20% will be used to run the tournament 21- This is a fun tournament for the family 22- Open to the first 40 boats
