President’s Report There have been a couple of notable events in
Nowra Rotary in the past week. The main and
most important night was our Rotary
Information on the 28th October. We had 8
Invited guests and we based the function on
informality and information about Rotary.
Polly Hill, Arthur Moorhouse and Jason Cox
each gave their thoughts on and experience
within Rotary. I thought they were excellent.
Unfortunately, our guest, Tony Innis had a
light headed moment but, he was fine with a
quick medical response and was in the garden
next day, which is good news.
It is important now
to Follow up each
guest and invite
them to a normal
dinner meeting
which hopefully
will lead to their agreeing to join our Rotary
Club. Robert is putting together guest speakers
and, if you can help him, please do so.
Five members, Mick, Fiona, Polly, Robert and
I, along with Kathie, Julie and Judy went to the
District 9710 Rotary Conference in Jindabyne
over the weekend of 23rd-25th October. We had
a great time socially and in learning more
about Rotary. Highlights of conference
included flag ceremony, Sarah Brown on The
Purple House in Central Australia assisting
aboriginal people with accessible dialysis
treatments, youth 4 way test speaking

competition, and the best was Michael
McQueen on "How Rotary can win the battle
for Relevance". The accommodation was
convenient to the conference venue (50 metres)
at The Station and overall, most seemed very
happy with the Conference.
It was a very touching moment when we had 2
past and 3 immediate past members recognised
in the Memoriam section.
Brendan Porter was the representative for
Rotary International President, Ravi
Ravindran. Brendan said he is in Rotary
because he likes helping people in the
company of people who do good in the world.
On Monday, 2nd November our members
joined with South Nowra, Bomaderry and
Berry Rotary for the annual Melbourne Cup
night. We had 7 members and partners attend
South Nowra club's dinner. The activities were
very similar to previous years and I think it's
time for a change and for better value for
money as the night lacked a bit of fun. In
saying that, it was great to see Past President -
Bill Thompson re-run a race called Shoalhaven
Rotary Cup.
Thank you From RC South Nowra Dear Presidents,
Please pass on our thanks to your Club members who
attended last night’s Melbourne Cup event. Thanks to all
your support we have raised a significant amount for
Rotary Foundation. These nights that we share are
terrific, and should happen more often. Thanks again, it
was great to see and hear Bill Thompson, past President
and PHF recipient

forwarded to South Coast Register.
Becoming a Rotarian If, in your current lifestyle, you are observed to be
demonstrating care for your family and friends,
employees or employer, local and global
communities in roughly that order, you are already
considered a Rotarian at heart.
Only one thing changes if you accept an invitation
to become a Rotarian. It is that you will add great
value to your local and International citizenship as
being a Rotarian will open up many self-paced,
personal development and social opportunities for
you and your family with its numerous youth,
vocational and fellowship programs and activities.
Also, becoming a Rotarian automatically links and
bonds you with1.3 million likeminded people in
almost every country in the world. Wherever you
travel, throughout Australia or abroad, you will be
made welcome and receive great hospitality,
assistance and advice from Rotarians in the town or
city you are in.
Rotary is the most effective local and international
humanitarian service organisation in the world as it
is a secular organisation open to all persons
regardless of race, colour, creed, religion, gender,
or political preference. Shoalhaven Rotary clubs
share and spread their support to most not-for-
profit local, health, welfare services and charity
organisations in our community. They also
combine with the other 32,000 Rotary clubs around
the world in many international humanitarian
The Shoalhaven Vanguard
projects and programs in the world’s poorer
countries and provide relief when natural or
manmade disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis,
storms, floods, bushfires, war and conflicts leave
families homeless or displaced.
One of Rotary International’s major achievements
has been partnering with the Gates Foundation to
eradicate polio from the world. When Rotary
started its global campaign in 1988, 350,000
people, mostly children, in most countries around
the world were contracting this lifelong crippling
disease each year. With its relentless immunisation
campaign Rotary International and its partners have
progressively reduced this to only 51 cases to date
this year – a 99% reduction over 27 years, and with
only two countries left with cases of polio, Rotary
and its partners are now in the home stretch of total
eradication of polio on our planet.
Last week a number of Shoalhaven Rotarians and
their partners attended the annual District 9710
Rotary Conference, held this year, at “The Station”
in Jindabyne for a weekend of fun, fellowship and
relaxation. 300 Rotarians and partners from 48
Rotary clubs in southern NSW and the ACT
attended the conference to listen to a number of
interesting and inspiring keynote speakers talking
about a wide range of Australian and International
topics, humanitarian programs and projects. With
the theme, “Hi! Country”,
Everyone enjoyed the social events over the
weekend.

Conference at “The Station” in Jindabyne.
RCN Humour
Didn’t see that coming
After being married for 61 years, a wife of one
of our normally diplomatic Rotarians asked
him to describe her.
He looked at her for a while, then said, "You're
an alphabet wife... A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J,
K."
She asks, "What the hell does that mean?"
He said, “Adorable, Beautiful, Cute,
Delightful, Elegant, Fabulous, Gorgeous and
Hot".
She smiled happily and said, "oh that's so
lovely, but what about I, J, K?"
He said, "I'm Just Kidding!"
Margaret advises that the swelling and bruising
is going down around Arthur’s eyes and the
specialist and councillor are optimistic that
both his eyesight and their marriage will return
to normal when he gets out of hospital. He will
be at the meeting this week to explain his
serious error of judgement.
Stop Press
On a more serious note Rhonda Moorhouse is
in hospital recovering from an operation last
Friday to relieve pinched nerves in her lower
spine. It was a scheduled op that was held over
until after their cruise. Arthur M reports that all
went better than expected and he and Rhonda
will be back home from Sydney early this
week.
If anyone wants a copy of any photos in the
Vanguard please let me know and I will
forward to you in a separate email.
