As interest ebbs and flows and the focus of both Rotariansand the microfinance world shift, we have attempted to adjust accordingly. Wow........summer is over already!

While there have been some important Rotary events during the summer, members generally take this t ime to enjoyfamily vacat ions, outdoor act ivit ies and a more relaxed lifestyle.....and what a great t ime of year it has been! The new Rotary year o fficially began on July 1 but in reality much o f our renewal fo r this next Rotary year begins in September. This is the month students’return to schoo l, the busy vacation period is over and we all return to the rigors o f normal life.......the ho liday is over!

As Rotary members we need to exercise that same renewal. Summer is commonly a period o f reduced Rotary attendance as those o ther activitieslogically take prio rity. Just like returning to schoo l or returning to work, we must get back to Rotary.....get back into the routine o f coming together weeklyas well as re-engaging in committee activities with our many Rotary friends.

And it’s not just Rotary Clubs that re-engage in September but, as schoo l returns, our Rotaract and Interact Clubs are also organizing for a new year. Assponsor clubs and members directly invo lved in these programs we are encouraged to be sure these clubs come alive again in the new schoo l year. Asstudents graduate each year, these clubs must withstand a turnover in membership and they need our attention and support to get o ff to a good year.

Although “Engage Rotary, Change Lives” is this year’s Rotary Theme it might also be a good theme for September. This is the time o f year when we needour members to engage or re-engage in the wonderful work o f Rotary.

Linda and I are just comfortably into our club visits and already I can see that Rotary’s concern and focus on membership....retention and growth, is also aconcern and a prio rity in many o f the clubs. We have enjoyed several good discussions on the objectives and plans o f these clubs. We see enthusiasmfor growth but a continuing need for the “how to” and the best practices for success. Rotary Leaders are encouraging creativity and new thought as weaddress Rotary’s membership challenges.

In this regard I remind clubs o f the regional training sessions on October 5 announced in last month’s e-bulletin. The sessions are meant to engage clubmembership and foundation committees with their peers from local clubs in one o f the locations....Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Calgary or Red Deer. Moreinformation will be provided in September.

Membership, in which lies the health o f our clubs, is all o f our responsibility. It is important that all o f us understand the goals o f our club and how we canparticipate. Make this a meeting or table discussion in all our clubs.

Linda and I hope you are all o ff to a great start!

DG Pat

Micro-credit is a wonderful tool to help give people in dif f icult third-world circumstances a chance to have a successfullife. A vital aspect of micro-credit is that the borrower can only succeed when there is a market for the goods orservices created. If we here in Alberta can see value in the created goods, we can help those workers have a chance tosucceed, but f irst there needs to be awareness and an out let for such items.

One caring mother here in Calgary decided to do just that – starting with Kantha blankets stitched together from six layers o f saris by Bangladesh womenwho were formerly in the sex trade, Shelley Jones has developed a small home-based business to enable Canadians to help these women by purchasingtheir product. She has added jewellry and bags from Africa and even some products from a homeless shelter in Vancouver to her product list.

Check it out at www.dignify.ca and see if there are products you could purchase for your use or do your Christmas shopping at dignify.ca and help thoseless fortunate in the process. As noted on the website, "dignify helps women to choose items that they will bo th love and feel great about buying, becausetheir production provided dignity & livelihood to the person who crafted them."

Exshaw and the Bow Valley corridor. They have raised over $506,000 and have distributed most of those funds withinthe region.

Canmore was fortunate in that its downtown and business core areas were not affected by the flood and therefore they could mobilize resources almostinstantly.

That’s not to say that businesses didn’t suffer from short term interruption due to the highway being closed, but it was only a short term interruption.

High River Rotary Club on the o ther hand has had to deal with a to tally different scenario as not only was the whole community evacuated but thedowntown business centre was destroyed. So whilst Canmore could call upon businesses for support in rebuilding, many business owners in High Rivernot only lost their business but also their home. This flood, in one way or another, affected almost every Rotarian personally curtailing their ability to reactas readily as Canmore or have access to the same resources.

Calgary, as a large municipal community has received much assistance from the City. Rotarians in Calgary are still waiting for the call to action from thoseaffected within the City and the District. The Calgary Club has allocated $200,000 towards flood relief effo rts in the District and will be meeting shortly, oncetheir research is completed, to determine on the distribution o f those funds.

Medicine Hat has also suffered lost homes and their beloved Seniors Centre. The community has rallied around the local Foundation to help fundrestoration work, although it is likely that the Seniors centre will need to be relocated having been flooded several times in the past.

Calgary Crowchild club has been working closely with the Morley reserve to help them recover, working closely with the food bank to ensure no one goeshungry.

The Siksika Nation has also received support from many Rotarians and we continue to assess their needs.

Throughout the District Rotarians rallied to the call fo r help, especially in High River where the destruction was so widespread.

I would like to thank all o f you for your physical, moral and financial support to those communities affected by the flood.

Hopefully by next month’s news letter I will have more to report.

The 2013 f loods have Albertans interested in disaster relief , even as they gathered to celebrate cultures f rom aroundthe world at GlobalFest 2013. This is the second year that ShelterBox has been on display at GlobalFest in Calgary, made possible by Dale Perret who ho lds the multiple ro les o fCalgary Chinook Rotarian, ShelterBox Ambassador and GlobalFest organizer. It is estimated that 100,000 people attended the 5-day event to visit cultural pavilions, sample international cuisine and watch the world class fireworks. Many stopped by to check out the ShelterBox tent. ShelterBox is a perfect fit at an event that attracts people from all cultures, including many with connections to the 82 countries where boxes have beendelivered. Usually that would be the main topic o f discussion, but this year fo lks were looking at the box full o f supplies and thinking they should puttogether a similar kit to prepare their family fo r a disaster here. Many also asked if ShelterBoxes were deployed in the south Alberta flooding.

Many also asked if ShelterBoxes were deployed in the south Alberta flooding. “The o ffer was made more than once in the aftermath o f the flood” said ShelterBox Canada Director and Rotarian Kent Fraser. “ShelterBox Internationalwas monitoring the Alberta floods from the start and deployed Response Team member Andre Bloemink.” “Andre was in close contact with o fficials across the region and especially on the SikSika nation. But as is o ften the case in developed countries, theShelterBox o ffers were declined because o ther shelter was available”, said Kent. At GlobalFest the tent and gear drew a lo t o f attention. Visito rs were impressed by the design o f the equipment and amazed that so much could fit in onebox! Vo lunteers from the Rotary Club o f Calgary Fish Creek fielded lo ts o f questions. And when someone asked how ShelterBox manages deploymentsaround the world, the answer inevitably included a description o f the tremendous ro le played by Rotarians in disaster countries. That added to the Rotarypresence at GlobalFest, along with the food tents o f the Calgary East Club (the best beef on a bun!) and logos on ShelterBox gear. Southern Albertans now appreciate disaster relief more than ever, so they were keen to see the simple concept o f ShelterBox - Another example o f whatRotary can do to help!

Ro t ary Yo ut h Exchange – Helping t o build go o dwill and wo rld peace o ne st udent at a t imePosted by Keri Colwell on Sep 10, 2013

Well another Rotary Youth Exchange year begins! At the t ime of writ ing this art icle our new inbound student familyhave all arrived (18 in all) as have our outbounds from District 5360 lef t for their one-year journey to live in anothercountry and a dif ferent culture. Past experience tells us that the year away from home for both our inbound andoutbound students will happen all too fast , so we encourage them to dream big, set some goals and live each day tothe fullest .

The year o fficially began with our annual Inbound Orientation #1 and Rotex De-Brief Weekend at Kamp Kiwanis on August 16 th -18 th. This weekend is allabout getting our inbound students started on the right track, building connections with their peers and most importantly, building bridges with theirinbound counselors, potentially one o f the most important people in their lives for the next 12 months. For our returning students, commonly referred toas “Rotex”, it is a chance for them to download about their recent exchange and to talk about how they’re managing with a common phenomenon calledreverse culture shock. Sprinkle in some counselor training and it makes for a very busy, but fun-filled weekend. Unfortunately we were missing seven o four inbound students and their counselors at Kamp Kiwanis this year, but we will catch up with them on September 27th when we ho ld an abbreviatedversion o f Kamp Kiwanis at Windsor Park Community Centre for our late arrivers.

Our next inbound student and counselor orientation session is scheduled for Saturday, September 28 th at Windsor Park Community Centre. The focus o fthis one-day get together is primarily about youth pro tection awareness. Inbound students and counselors who live outside o f Calgary are reminded thatif they need a billet on Friday evening to let the YEX office know.

Have you checked out our new web site yet? Yes, we have modernized www.yex5360.org! We think you will find it more attractive, more user friendly, easier to navigate and find all o f the information you are looking for. For club counselors we are busy uploading all o f the updated forms for 2013-14 in aspecial area that you will find useful in administering the youth program in your club. If at any time there’s something you can’t find or something you needplease be sure to contact the YEX Administrative Assistant, Laura Istead at [email protected]

For participating inbound student host clubs a friendly reminder that your Club Checklist and Declaration forms, your inbound student orientation fees andyour counselor training fees are now due. For those clubs that have already submitted this to the Youth Exchange Administrative Assistant we thank you.

For clubs wishing to participate in the 2014-2015 District 5360 Youth Exchange program you are reminded to get your club commitment fo rm is as soonas possible. Again, thanks to those clubs that have already forwarded their fo rms to the Youth Exchange o ffice.

Micro f inance & So cial Business – Upco ming Oppo rt unit ies In CalgaryPosted by Keri Colwell on Sep 10, 2013

For the past 5 years in October, RAGM and the Calgary Microcredit Conference have brought you a world-class line-up of speakers in aneffort to increase awareness and engage individuals in the power of microfinance. As interest ebbs and flows and the focus of both Rotariansand the microfinance world shift, we have attempted to adjust accordingly. Over the last two years we have responded to interest in the field ofsocial enterprise, of which microfinance is a part, by changing the scope of our conference and providing meaningful opportunities forengagement.

As such, we are pleased to set aside the annual conference for this year and instead support two major and related events that will be taking place inCalgary in October 2013 - The Social Enterprise World Forum (SEWF) and Opportunity International Canada’s International Visito r’s Tour (IVT). Both o fthese events share the common goal o f addressing some of the world’s most pressing issues through innovation, co llaboration and economic too ls.

SEWF will provide access to a multitude o f global leaders and experts from 30 countries on a scale that the CMC cannot do. Every year a different hostcountry is selected to celebrate and nurture its own social enterprise movement and 2013 is Canada’s (and Calgary’s!) chance to shine. You can take partin 6 program areas including social finance/impact investing; indigenous social enterprise; cross-boundary co llaborations; social innovation; socialenterprise skills building; and research and public po licy.

With 130 breakout sessions, 17 main stage speakers and over 1200 attendees, there won’t be a shortage o f things to do or people to talk with, but we dorecommend taking part in these:

Social Finance Solution Labs – 6 attendees will share their social finance issues and receive advice from experts and otherattendees

Social Enterprise Tour – Visit 15 local social enterprises including 2 social purpose businesses and the first-of- it’s- kind NorthAmerican innovation centre$20,000 Social Pitch Contest - A portion of all attendance fees will be put in a pot making every attendee a ‘social investor’ with agoal of helping one social venture move to the next level.

The IVT goes somewhat in the opposite direction, focusing on the power o f 1 – one woman, from one country, sharing one story. During the tour, Maria delos Angeles, a micro finance client in Honduras that has worked her way out o f poverty by building and running her own business, will share her story withpeople across Canada. Maria’s story is living proof o f how micro finance, combined with education and determination, can empower and transform thelives o f individuals, their families and their communities. Her inspiring story will motivate you and show you what is possible in spite o f the mostseemingly impossible situation.

Several representatives o f Rotary including Wally Gardiner, Duncan Stanners and Steve Rickard, had the pleasure o f visiting with Maria last February aspart o f the due diligence for a $2 million pro ject in Honduras

Starting in Toronto with stops in London, Victoria, Vancouver, Langley and Calgary, the tour will host different events tailo red to each city. We areencouraging Rotarians along the tour route to participate. In Calgary, the tour will feature a luncheon on Thursday October 24, with Maria as the keynotespeaker.

For nearly two years, Rotary has been working to refresh and revitalize Rotary’s website and the new version waslaunched on August 26th. www.Rotary.org In this art icle we want to highlight a few key aspects of the new website. Two distinct versions o f the website:My Ro t ary (f o r members)• All members will be encouraged to register and sign in when visiting the site. Members will be able to better engage through their own customizedexperience based on their interests, and conduct their Rotary business more easily than ever before.• The new website will eliminate the need for the Member Access Portal (MAP). Those currently registered in MAP will simply be prompted to re-registerwhen first visiting the site and will then be able to access too ls previously located in MAP, such as the ability to make district appo intments, Rotary ClubCentral, etc.Ro t ary.o rg (f o r t he general public)• The public site tells our story to external audiences in a fresh, streamlined way, encouraging people to get to know Rotary and learn about all the greatwork Rotarians are do ing all over the world.

Find what you need!• The website has been entirely rebuilt, grouping items more logically. Testing has confirmed that the user experience is cleaner and more streamlined thanwhat is o ffered today. For example, too ls that help you manage your Rotary business—such as membership and contribution reports—are nowconveniently located under a tab called “Manage.”• The website’s “search” engine is now powered by Google, making locating documents, articles and too ls much easier.

Important changes• “Contact this Club” – visito rs to the site can submit a request online to learn more about a specific club and membership; the RI Board has requestedthat an email be automatically sent to the District Governor and Membership Chair to notify you o f this request, so you can fo llow up as appropriate.• Rotary Foundation Grants – many o f you have already visited the Rotary Grants microsite and all it has to o ffer. That functionality will now be merged intothe new site so everything you need will be in one place.• As part o f the new launch, we are also adopting industry leading security measures to manage your IDs and passwords. To facilitate this transition, anyMAP user from the last year will go through an abbreviated re-registration process.• The new website uses some of the latest browser capabilities and because o f that, visito rs to the site will need to be on modern browsers. Whateverbrowser you prefer to use, we recommend you upgrade to the latest version to have the best experience possible.

As we are only a few weeks into the new website launch, I want to remind us all that with any major launch, we can anticipate a few minor issues early onas we make the transition, so we may need to be patient. Explore the new site and provide us with your feedback on your experience. What do you like? What could be better? Encourage your fellow members to do the same. The more feedback you give us, the more we can do to ensure your onlineexperience is a positive one.

District Rotarians and our Four-Way Test Commit tee, plus RI Pres. Rep. Paul Netzel and a Board member of the RotaryEthics Init iat ive, all provided us with encouraging feedback to cont inue on, albeit with some small, but perhapssignif icant modif icat ions. Our website is updated and accessible to anyone, at www.rotary5360.ca/4waytest . While in the 2012-2013 version, we asked students to use at least three o f the fo llowing: text, graphics, audio , animation, and/or video, fo r this year we willrequire graphics, sound and video. At our DG’s request, the presenter’s vo ice must be included in the narration.

As before, this contest is fo r students in grades 10 -12. An initial contest invo lving several high schoo ls in an area and several Rotary clubs isrecommended. This can be planned for before Christmas, to avo id a time-crunch in January-February. Top entries are to be submitted for the Districtcontest, with a deadline o f Feb. 28, 2014.

The RI President’s Rep., Paul Netzel, attended the Four-Way Test Multimedia breakout session at our 2013 District Conference in May, and congratulatedus for this innovative approach to advancing Rotary’s Four-Way Test. He passed on our website and YouTube presentation o f our first prize winner to theEthics Initiative (EI) fo r Rotary Clubs and Districts. John Wintersteen, Board Member o f the EI, requested permission, if room, to place a brief description o four multimedia contest and our website in the fall/winter 2013 -2014 Ethics Initiative eNewsletter. We gladly provided this to him.

The ‘New Generations’ July 2013 e-Newsletter had the fo llowing item: “ District 5360 in Canada is finding new ways to engage young people thinkingabout ethics. In the past, this district held a Four-Way Test speech contest. This year, the district invited high schoo l students to create multimediapresentations to explain these key Rotary principles. Watch the winning presentation from the 2013 competition and learn more about the contest .”

Rotarians interested in participating and not yet included on my mailing list (i.e. you did not receive my Aug.16, 2013 mail-out), please send me yourcontact information.

T RACC (Taking Ro t ary Assist ance t o Co mmunit ies and Children)Posted by Keri Colwell on Sep 10, 2013

If you were to shake hands with each of the TRACCUganda benef iciaries we helped this year alone, you would walk areceiving line more than one mile long. Over the past year the TRACC program has help restore health, dignity andhope to 1,111 men, women and children.

The TRACC pro ject area covers the large rural areas o f Rakai and Masaka districts, the first hit by HIV/AIDS in Sub Saharan Africa, and still the highest

prevalence rate in Uganda at nearly 12%. Because o f HIV/AIDS and o ther effects o f extreme poverty, many children have lost one or both parents and areunable to tend to their own welfare and schoo ling. Many adults are discriminated against and feel hopeless about their life-chances.

The primary objectives o f the TRACC program are to enable and sustain the most vulnerable children to achieve stable and productive lives in their owncommunities with better education, job employment prospects, nutrition and health. The program is gender-focused and equally accessed, thus improvingthe communities ability to sustain themselves financially to bring up healthy educated children and more able to pass on the benefits o f health, nutrition, sustainable agricultural practices and economic growth opportunities to their extended family and the wider community.

Since 2006, the local Rotary clubs o f Kalisizo , Masaka, Kyotera have worked tirelessly building capacity and managing the TRACC pro ject giving newhope and a way forward to the people participating in the program. Their dedication and commitment to serving their communities to build a better futurefor all concerned has generated outstanding and sustainable results acknowledged by their local communities, NGO partners, Canadian Rotary clubpartners in district 5360 and CRCID (Canadian Rotary Collaboration for International Development) who recommended TRACC for future funding, citing“The TRACC program was one o f the first Rotary pro jects to understand the importance o f a program based approach to build sustainability and capacityfor the benefit o f local stakeho lders by using a participatory approach.”

Vo lunteer guardians approved by local Rotarians assist the children whenever possible to stay in their own homes. More than 120 trained members fromsix Rotary Community Corps developed by TRACC assist with monitoring the children’s home conditions, adequacy o f subsistence farming and theirphysical and mental well-being. Older children are given vocational training so they are more able to earn a living. Those who are able to attend universityand o ther post-secondary institutions are assisted through another program of the Rotary Club o f Calgary as a fund-raising allows. The TRACC programhas been deemed by BVC (Bow Valley College) o f Calgary as an excellent educational setting with a rich cultural exchange opportunity fo r students go inginto human services internationally. Over the past two years BVC has sent 18 students and five instructors to the area as interns. The student’scontribution to the community has enhanced counselling and guidance among the TRACC supported children to which both TRACC and BVC arecommitted to nurturing the relationships through annual student intern visits.

The 1,111 participant enro llment to the TRACC program this year is impressive: 457 schoo l-aged kids are happy to be in class and fed every day, 186 o lderorphaned children are enro lled in technical and vocational skills training, another 25 students have qualified for University and an ambitious 443entrepreneurs are micro-credit recipients.

Of the 186 students enro lled in vocational skills training, 123 beneficiaries have graduated from certified programs including carpentry, motor mechanics, sewing, hairdressing, welding, and catering & hotel management. While 65% are employed locally by local business, 23% are self-employed. To ensurefinancial sustainability in the community, 251 IGA’s (Income Generating Pro jects) have been started to boost income levels by introducing agriculturalpro jects, including: 39 local poultry, 9 passion fruit, 61 piggeries 142 maize and bean gardening, banana plantation and tree planting.

Over the past seven years more than 4,000 vulnerable Ugandan’s have directly benefited by the TRACC program. The program is comprised o f multiple-pro jects within the program, a few of which have been mentioned in this article. Each pro ject is designed to be relevant and integral to the o ther to build onthe strength and foundation o f building capacity and sustainability in the region that benefits all.

Yo u Never Kno w What Can Happen – DIST RICT AND CLUB INSURANCEPosted by Keri Colwell on Sep 10, 2013

A dry subject , but important nevertheless. The District carries insurance against all kinds of eventualit ies so that noindividual, or club or the District gets hit f inancially with a dif f icult lawsuit . Also, if someone has a case for which insurance may be the answer, we want to make sure that person, Rotarian or o therwise, is fairly treated. Each Clubpays a per member fee for the insurance.

We are actively in the process o f improving our insurance. In the future we hope it will cover all activities invo lving youth (which it does now, but needs tobe improved); cyber insurance – for invasion o f our websites); also special events and pro jects, and possibly insurance for extraordinary happeningswhen Rotarians are abroad in the world. This latter may prove to be too costly – we’ll see.

Also there are a range o f different kinds o f necessary insurance for liabilities o f various kinds and to pro tect Officers and Directors; every club and theDistrict must have these.

We expect with a new po licy, coverages will be larger in do llar amounts in keeping with changes in the world.
