Dear Hevre,

I hope you’ve had a wonderful summer so far.

On Tuesday evening, August 6th we begin the month of Elul. Forty days later, we observe Yom Kippur. Our tradition views this period as a time of introspection and reflection, enabling us to set our sights high and true for a new year ahead. We should not wait until Rosh Hashana or Yom Kippur to begin our spiritual work, but rather we should take forty

days for a deeper journey.

Why forty days? The auspicious number appears in many other settings, as well, to describe times of new beginnings. In the Torah, the Great Flood lasted for forty days, marking the renewal of creation after a time of destruction. Moses spent forty days on Mt. Sinai receiving the tablets of the law, ushering in a new covenant between God and humanity. The prophet Jonah gave the city of Nineveh forty days to repent and transform itself to avoid destruction. One of the Talmudic sages of antiquity commented that a human embryo is nothing but

‘mere water’ at first, but at forty days of age it becomes a nascent human life.

Other religious traditions, as well, pay special attention to forty day periods. In Buddhism,

Siddhartha Gautama sat under a tree for forty days until he attained enlightenment and

became the Buddha. In the Gospels of the New Testament, Jesus spent forty days in the

wilderness, fasting and reflecting to prepare himself for spiritual leadership. Christians

Tots and their parents gather in the Sanctuary for the beginning of the Family Service, starting at 7:30 PM on the first Friday night of each month. At 7:45 p.m. we invite the young children into the Quiet Room for the Tot Shabbat service. The children are invited, but of course, not required, to join in the program, which lasts about 25 minutes. Afterwards, the Tot Shabbat participants may return to the sanctuary for the end of the Family Service. Please spread the word to anyone you know who has young children!

everywhere today observe forty days of Lent, following in Jesus’ path of transformation.

In Islamic tradition, the Prophet Muhammad spent forty days fasting in a cave. During this time the angel Gabriel appeared to him and began to reveal the Quran, marking the dramatic begin-ning of a new civilizational era. Later Islamic sources state that a person who engages in prohib-ited behaviors like drinking or malicious gossip requires forty days before their prayers may again be accepted. Just like the prophet awaiting transformation in the cave, the Muslim believer must

wait a significant period to begin anew.

In so many instances, forty days is the key period for transformation. Together, these traditions suggest that deep change cannot happen right away. Rather, we must take time to allow our vision to incubate and to permeate all aspects of our lives. We must reflect deeply, experiment with new ways, sometimes fail and try again. Prayer, meditation, ritual, and all sorts of introspec-tive activities can help. Many Jews listen to the sound of the shofar daily throughout the month

of Elul as a wake-up call to renewal.

Of course, in many instances a new beginning requires longer than forty days to take root. Re-gardless of the exact timing, these traditions together remind us to have patience with ourselves

and others, and to expect many steps in any time of transformation.

During this month of Elul, may we hear the sound of the shofar. May we take time for reflection

and evaluation of our lives’ directions. May the period call us to renewal, step by step.

I look forward to seeing you during the High Holidays, if not sooner.

Shalom,

Rabbi Doug Heifetz

This summer at Oseh Shalom has been anything but uneventful. Ed Litrenta, who has been our bookkeeper, recently retired. Audrey Klein joined the staff in July as our new bookkeeper and is available to answer any questions you may have. The Religious School administrative assistant, Leydie Solano, has also recently taken a new position, so the office and Religious School are in transition and more dependent than usual on our wonderful cadre of volunteers.

We’re gearing up for a lot of activities: the High Holidays, Back to Shul Weekend, preparing the building for the fall, and the opening of Religious School.

We’re lining up new facility rentals and making needed repairs with the help of our new Building and Grounds chair, Don Street, and volunteers like Gary Magnus, who's taken on this summer’s mitzvah repair projects, working on a wide variety of minor repairs.

In addition, Oseh Shalom has created our first Jewish calendar, which is available for pre-ordering ($10 a copy). The calendar includes all planned synagogue activities on the Oseh Shalom calendar and will be going to the printers shortly. It should be available for purchase at the Comedy Night during the Back to Shul Weekend. All proceeds will benefit the Religious School Shabbaton Fund and will also be used for membership promotional purposes. The calendar features beautiful full-color collage images of Oseh Shalom, taken from photos by our Religious School students last spring as part of the school’s “Hineni” Jewish Museum project.

Finally, I hope you like the summer issue of the Shalom. I am the designer this month. Doris Kirschbaum, who has been doing a wonderful job, spent July in Eastern Europe on vacation. The genealogist in me envies her and hopes you appreciate my design efforts this month.

One thing is clear about this summer, volunteers are key to Oseh Shalom’s success. I would like to thank all those who have come in over the last two months: Judy Arnoff, Mona Davis, Rose Fishman, Diane Green, Lisa Karpf, Doris Kirschbaum, Pauline Pivowar, and Heidi Rhodes.

P.S. On a personal note, I had a

short story published this summer,

Nowhere to Go But Mars. It appears

in the anthology, Irony of Survival

(trade paperback). The story

received an Honorable Mention in

the Writers of the Future Contest in

2011 and is a reverse Ellis Island

experience story. It’s an ironic

science fiction tale about a young

man among America’s huddled

masses looking for a better life on

Mars.

It is an honor to serve as the new President of Oseh Shalom. I have been a member of our congregation for about twenty years. Here, I experienced the joy of seeing one of my daughters become a Bat Mitzvah.

In 2007 at an Oneg after Friday night services, a great guy, Steve Kaplan, started a conversation with me; he thought I might be a new or potential member. We later took Melton classes together, attended the Super Duper Bowl Party and many Friday night services. To our joy, in October 2009, Rabbi Doug and Cantor Charlie officiated at our wedding in the sanctuary at Oseh Shalom. Since then Steve and I have been active in various synagogue roles. I look forward to hearing about you, getting to know you better, and learning what you would like to participate in and see happen at Oseh Shalom.

Our theme for the coming year is “Jewish Civilization and Culture.”

Jewish comedy is definitely an important part of our culture. In keeping with this theme Kelly Benton-Klein, Shelley Reese, and the membership committee are bringing rabbi and comedian Bob Alper to the synagogue for expanded programming on both Friday night and Saturday night of Back to Shul Weekend, August 23 and 24. I look forward to seeing you there.

Shalom,

Greetings from the Social Action and Community Support Committee. We are in the heat of the summer and the Oseh Community Vegetable Garden needs volunteers. Planted by congregants and religious school students on Mitzvah Day, the garden has so far produced bumper crops of lettuce, tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, and broccoli. All produce from our garden is donated to Elizabeth House. There are still spots open to anyone inter-ested in helping us tend the garden; we especially need help in August and September. Please consider volun-teering to help in the garden – any and all help accepted. Please contact Linda Bergofsky at [email protected] or 301-604-0901. Don’t forget that Social Action and Community Support committee volunteers work all year long. Our volunteers serve food to Elizabeth House guests the first Monday of every month. Oseh also sponsors blood drives throughout the year. Please contact Carolyn Makovi at [email protected] for information on how to get in-volved with these wonderful activities. If you know of someone in need of assistance such as getting to doctors’ visits or who is homebound, please contact Suzie Friedman at [email protected]. We also make periodic visits to the Brown Home, a group home for very special ladies. For more information on Brown Home activities, please contact Eileen Hol-lander at [email protected]. We also have a full calendar of Tikkun Olam opportunities beginning in the fall. We are in need of volunteers to help plan and lead these events, some old and some new, all of which demonstrate Oseh Shalom’s unwavering commitment to social action.

Over the course of the past few meetings of the Religious Committee, we have reviewed and revised the proposed guidelines for Bar and Bat Mitzvah students that were presented to the congregation this past March. As part of the process, we took into account feedback that was offered to the committee, as well as a discussion as to what we hoped to accomplish by having set guidelines. In this article I would like to present the latest draft of the guidelines, along with an offer for all to send feedback on the proposal. Your comments will be reviewed by the Religious Commit-tee and taken into consideration before the final draft of the proposal is presented to the board for admission into the Synagogue’s policies. If you would like to offer feedback, please email your comments to

[email protected].

Please note that students will not be required to adhere to the guidelines until they have been approved. Students cur-rently preparing for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah are not obligated to meet these expectations

Proposal for Expectations of Bar/Bat Mitzvah Students at Oseh Shalom (Version: 7/09/2013)

The following proposed guidelines for Bar/Bat Mitzvah students have been complied with the intent to accomplish the following:

To prepare the students to take their place, not only in the Oseh Shalom community, but also in the general Jewish community by giving them the tools to be active participants.

To prepare the student for the event by having them become more familiar and comfortable with Shabbat services and liturgy.

To enrich the overall experience of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah so students may be able to look back at this important mile-stone in a positive light.

A clear statement of B’nei Mitzvah expectations and options will be sent out to the family along with the information giving the bar/bat mitzvah date and Torah portion.

The following will be the expectations for all Bar/Bat mitzvah students:

Learning and chanting the Torah blessings

Learning and chanting the Maftir Torah portion for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah

Preparing a drash to be presented to the congregation

Learning the following list of Shabbat service prayers and leading the congregation in the entirety of these prayers during the Friday night and Saturday morning services of their Bar/Bat mitzvah:

Announcements

Shalom, Chevre,

As chairperson of the High Holy Days committee, I would like to remind you that you should have re-

ceived the High Holiday packet in the mail. If you have not received yours, you can download the forms

online at the Oseh Shalom website, or contact Barry Nove at the Oseh office.

The packet includes information regarding dates and times for services, how to acquire additional tick-

ets, and the many congregational events that help to spiritually usher us into the Yamin Noraim. This

year we have also included in the packet a Volunteer Form, information about Back to Shul Weekend,

and an order form for your official Oseh Shalom calendar. Please review the materials carefully, com-

plete the appropriate forms, if you have not yet done so, and mail to Oseh Shalom no later than Friday,

August 16, 2013.

Kindly note that there is no charge for attendance at the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur Beit services;

please encourage friends and colleagues who may be looking for such an opportunity to join us.

Additionally, Barry Nove now will be leading our annual Yom Kippur Torah Study utilizing text selected

from Miqra’ot Gelodot: The Biblical Commentators Bible as he did last year.

If you are interested in being an usher for any of the services, please contact Craig Hollander. If you are

interested in doing a reading during any of the services, please contact John Riehl. If you are inter-

ested in reading from the Torah, please contact Dan Glaser.

Rosh Hashanah begins on September 4. This year the baskets will be delivered in August before school starts in order to have them to all our members before the holidays start. The Gift baskets will be built and delivered on

August 25. You should have received an email by now inviting you to fill out the Basket Selection.

These forms are due back to me no later then August 12 (note the early cutoff). We will need lots of volunteers starting at 9:00 AM on August 25 in order to get the baskets delivered the same day we build them.

Please also let me know if you can help bake the honey cakes. A couple of hours on Sunday, August 18 would be a great help, and you get to see the recipe for the delicious cakes.

Please contact Art Solomon at [email protected] or 240-280-2067 and let me know how you can help or if you need the forms.

It's that time of year again.. Time to buy school supplies for our children. While you are out buying pencils, pens, glue, etc., please think of the children who are not as fortunate as ours. Please con-sider buying something for the children at LARS.

From the editors

Doris and I are back, refreshed from our trip and our break from the “Shalom”. This was Doris's first year on our annual vacation; up to now I had always traveled with Marlene and Adrienne. I think Doris had at least as good a time as I did.

This year we went to St. Martin. The weather was gorgeous, not too hot or too humid. The water was clear and a beautiful blue. We went swimming at the beach and even tried water skiing. Here are pictures of us at the water.

We also did lots and lots of shopping; jewelry is really inexpensive there, so we bought lots of bling. We ate very well, too. Every night we dined at a different restaurant. One day we rented a car and took a road trip, and saw some historic sites. We went horseback riding and rode a bike trail another day. There was never a dull moment for the entire week!

I have always appreciated the vacation Oseh Shalom sends me on every year, and Doris and I are already looking forward to next year's trip.
