THE SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT

Annabelle Moseley - published on 02/01/20

What the month of February means to Catholics and how to honor it in your home … Did you know that in the Catholic Church, each of the 12 months of the year has a devotional theme?

For Catholics, February is the month devoted to The Holy Family, and it is an ideal time to strengthen our own family and its connection to Jesus’s family. Continuing our monthly series on ways to showcase each month’s Catholic theme in your life, here are 12 ways you can align your family to the Holy Family this February:

1. CONSECRATE YOUR FAMILY TO THE HOLY FAMILY. Here are some prayers you can use.

2. PRAY THE FAMILY ROSARY TOGETHER. When you do, add a special prayer to the Holy Family, like this one.

3. STRENGTHEN AND/OR AFFIRM YOUR FAMILY'S DEVOTION TO THE EUCHARIST AS THE NOURISHMENT OF FAMILY LIFE.

Purpose to keep the Sabbath holy together, and not let worldly distractions or secular obligations get in the way. Remind everyone of the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist as you drive to church together. Pope John Paul II wrote, “In the eucharistic gift of charity the Christian family finds the foundation and soul of its communion and its mission” (Letter on the

4. PLACE AN ICON OR IMAGE OF THE HOLY FAMILY ON YOUR TABLE.

One recommendation is the statue “A Quiet Moment” by Timothy P. Schmalz. Put a treasured picture of your own family beside it, as a way of seeking blessing and intercession for your family from the Holy Family.

5. STRENGTHEN YOUR FAMILY BONDS THROUGH SHARED JOY. During the month of February, plan something fun you can all do together! Maybe it’s a family outing to the aquarium, a sporting event, or a movie. Perhaps it’s baking a special dessert together and sharing the sweetness.

6. CREATE A “FAMILY FEAST DAY.” You can base it on a devotion to a saint, or the patron saint of your wedding day and/or the day you moved into or blessed your new home. If you haven’t yet had your house blessed or consecrated, make plans to do so! After all, your home is the domestic church for your family, and a beating heart of sorrows and joys where you all dwell and grow. What better month could there be to bless it?

7. SHARE STORIES OF BELOVED FAMILY MEMBERS. Pay special attention to those who have passed. Tell family anecdotes and pass down the oral tradition. Make sure to talk about those who have lived their faith through difficulties in an exemplary manner! This gives such roots and foundational meaning to our lives and identities as children of God.

8. TOGETHER, WITH YOUR FAMILY, WRITE A SHORT PRAYER YOU CAN SAY FOLLOWING GRACE BEFORE MEALS.

For example: “God bless the (Last name here) family!” while holding hands and raising them up together.

9. DESIGN A RITUAL OF FORGIVENESS. You may have one already and don’t realize that’s what it is! Perhaps to make peace with another member of the family you make a pot of tea to share as a gesture of forgiveness or play a special song that signifies to other family members: “I love you and I want to start new.” One nice idea: put a special cookie, or crackers and cheese or fruit on a plate, with an icon of the Holy Family as a centerpiece. Call the hurt or angry person(s) over for a chat, a hug, a shared apology, and a snack together from the “Holy Family plate.”

HOLY CROSS CHURCH SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2021 MENDOTA, ILLINOIS

10. TOGETHER WITH THE OTHER MEMBERS OF YOUR FAMILY, NAME YOUR HOME.

It can be named after a saint, or take its inspiration from a place in the Bible; it can have something to do with the name of the street you live on, an attribute you strive for, or your last name. But naming your home something gives an epic quality to your life that creates a sense of bonding among family members that cannot be taken for granted.

11. HAVE A HOLY WATER FONT AT THE DOOR. Bless yourselves and each other as you leave and return.

12. BLESS EACH OTHER AT BEDTIME AND MENTION EACH FAMILY MEMBER'S NAME IN PRAYER BEFORE FALLING ASLEEP.

Think of that classic television series, The Waltons, which closed each episode with that beautiful ritual!

As we end each day, let us recall these words of Pope St. John Paul II: “The family, more than any other human reality, is the place in which the person is loved for himself and in which he learns to live the sincere gift of self.” God bless your family.

12 Ways to honor the Holy Family this February (aleteia.org)

It begins on Thursday, February 18 and ends on Palm Sunday, March 28th

Did you know that each Tuesday night a small group of parishioners gets together to pray the rosary together?

At 6:30 each Tuesday evening parishioners dial in to pray together. And you can join in too! Simply call 425.436.6314 and when prompted enter the passcode 604509# (you must include the “pound” sign).

On the third Tuesday of every month Father Pilon is offering Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacra-ment in the Church. If you are someone who has gone before the exposed Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus in the Eucharist and have missed that peaceful and quiet solitude communing with our Lord, you may participate in this too. We al-ways begin at 6:30 with the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary.

This would have been akin to Elijah watching God pass by the cave entrance, but only after God’s face—his countenance—was past; God had put his hand up to block the prophet’s view so he could not see his face—no one can see the face of God and live. Moses and Elijah were two persons from the Old Testament who had particularly close experiences in the presence of God, but they could not look at his face.

As we continue our Lenten journey and look for en-couragement among these days of prayer, fasting and abstinence, and almsgiving, let us consider this dra-matic event of the Transfiguration. Unlike the disciples who had to question what rising from the dead meant, we know. Our hope is in the Risen Lord!

The Old Testa-ment is giving us a sort of overview of Salva-tion History, while the Gospel readings are leading us closer and closer to Jesus’ Passion, Death, and Resurrec-tion.

We are already on the Second Sunday of Lent, and while we are not quite called to trials as severe as Abraham, we are nonetheless in a season of repentance. As has been previously mentioned, anytime we encounter the number 40 in the Bible, whether days, weeks, or years, it signifies a period of trial and testing. Our first reading today from the Book of Genesis is a perfect example of testing. Thankfully, this was the only time God would ask for a human sacrifice from his creatures.

We see Isaac carrying the wood of his own sacrifice up

We will resume this week by picking up the Liturgy of the Word

with the Responsorial Psalm. As such, a psalm is really a song and is meant to be

sung. It is our response to the First Reading. It will typically highlight or point to some thought or idea expressed in the reading. Lawrence Johnson, in his book Mystery of Faith writes: “The responsorial psalm is not just a response to the reading…. It also helps the gathered assembly create an atmosphere of prayer, one in which all can recall what God has done and continues to do. To a certain extent the psalm serves as a meditative prolongation of the readings, offering us through poetry a rich opportunity to savor the Word of God” (p. 36).

The second reading is always taken from one of the New Testament letters, or from the Book of Revelation. It is not intended to align or harmonize with the first reading or the Gospel, however, at times there will be a sort of “accidental” harmonization of the second reading with one or the other. The exception here is that during major seasons outside of Ordinary Time, and on feast days, the second reading is intended to harmonize with the other readings.

The letters of the New Testament are able to give us a glimpse into the thinking and activities of the earliest Christians to be disciples of Christ by following his ways as closely as possible.

As was pointed out last week, at the end of the second reading, the Lector/Reader proclaims “The Word of the Lord,” to which the people respond, “Thanks be to God!”

The next thing we encounter in the Liturgy of the Word is actually the climax of this liturgy. It is the Gospel Acclamation, and is always about Jesus and what he has said and done.

During the Gospel Acclamation and the Gospel, the people all stand. This is meant to show an expression of joy for the Good News we are getting ready to hear. (The word Gospel literally means “Good News.”) It also signifies our respect for Jesus, who is about to address us through his priest or deacon, who has been ordained to proclaim the Gospel; he will also have prayed that the Lord will use him and his abilities and faculties to proclaim the Word.

Learn JESUS: THE MODEL AND MASTER OF PRAYER

In this episode in his course on the Our Father, Dr. Ben Akers teaches us what we can learn from the perfect model and master of prayer: Jesus himself.

Why is the “Our Father” the best prayer? † Why is the Our Father the best of all prayers? The Our Father is the best of all prayers because it is the Lord’s Prayer, taught us by Christ Himself, and because it is a prayer of perfect and unselfish love. (See Matthew 6:9-13 for the Lord’s Prayer.)

The Our Father is a prayer of perfect and unselfish love because in saying it we offer ourselves entirely to God and ask from Him the best things, not only for ourselves but also for our neighbor.

THE SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT

Mendota Council 2090 to

Host Monthly Meeting on

Thursday, March 4, 2021

On Thursday, March 4, 2021 at the Ss. Peter & Paul Parish Hall, the Mendota Council of the Knights of Columbus will meet at 6:30 p.m.

We have upcoming projects and fund-raisers to discuss. These unusual times are calling us to really think outside the box to be able to continue to attract funds to go for our organizations charita-ble giving endeavors.

The surest way to protect your-self from “being volunteered” is to be in attend-ance, if you can.

Seriously, if you are a member of the Council, the officers would love to see you at the meeting!

If you’re not a member of the Council, but are interested in joining, talk to any member, or visit https://www.kofc.org/en/who-we-are/about-membership/frequently-asked-questions.html for more information.

Because of the COVID protocols, the Knights have not been able to host the Lenten Fish Fry ~ Fish Boil Din- ners as usual. The local Council of the Knights of Columbus is not able to raise funds for our charit-able giving. We really miss seeing all of our friends and patrons on these Friday nights during the Lenten season.

We hope and pray that we will be able to be together to eat as a community of friends and family very soon. In the meantime, please know that our family, friends, and our wonderful patrons are very much in our prayers.

God Bless each and every one of you!

HOLY CROSS CHURCH SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2021 MENDOTA, ILLINOIS

Pope Francis announced a Year of St. Joseph, in honor of the 150th anniversary of the saint’s proclamation as patron of the Universal Church.

Pope Francis said he was establishing the year so that “every member of the faithful, following his example, may strengthen their life of faith daily in the complete fulfillment of God’s will.”

Here’s what you need to know about the Year of St. Joseph:

Why does the Church have years dedicated to specific topics?

The Church observes the passage of time through the liturgical calendar - which includes feasts such as Easter and Christmas, and seasons such as Lent and Advent. In addition, however, popes can set aside time for the Church to reflect more deeply on a specific aspect of Catholic teaching or belief. Past years designated by recent popes include a Year of Faith, Year of the Eucharist, and Jubilee Year of Mercy.

Why did the Pope declare a year of St. Joseph?

In making his declaration, Pope Francis noted that this year marks the 150th anniversary of the saint’s proclamation as patron of the Universal Church by Pope Pius IX on Dec. 8, 1870.

Pope Francis said the coronavirus pandemic has heightened his desire to reflect on St. Joseph, as so many people during the pandemic have made hidden sacrifices to protect others, just as St. Joseph quietly protected and cared for Mary and Jesus.

“Each of us can discover in Joseph -- the man who goes unnoticed, a daily, discreet and hidden pres-

ence -- an intercessor, a support and a guide in times of trouble,” the pope wrote.

He also said he wanted to highlight St. Joseph’s role as a father who served his family with charity and humility, adding, “Our world today needs fathers.”

When does the Year of St. Joseph begin and end?

The year begins Dec. 8, 2020, and concludes on Dec. 8, 2021.

What special graces are available during this year?

As Catholics pray and reflect on the life of St. Joseph throughout the coming year, they also have opportunities to gain a plenary indulgence, or remission of all temporal punishment due to sin. An indulgence can be applied to oneself or to a soul in Purgatory.

An indulgence requires a specific act, defined by the Church, as well as sacramental confession, Eucharistic Communion, prayer for the pope’s intentions, and full detachment from sin.

Special indulgences during the Year of St. Joseph can be received through more than a dozen different prayers and actions, including praying for the unemployed, entrusting one’s daily work to St. Joseph, performing a corporal or spiritual work of mercy, or meditating for at least 30 minutes on the Lord’s Prayer.

Why does the Church honor St. Joseph?

Catholics do not worship saints, but ask for their heavenly intercession before God and seek to imitate their virtues here on earth. The Catholic Church honors St. Joseph as the foster father of Jesus. He is invoked as the patron saint of the Universal Church. He is also the patron of workers, father, and a happy death. HOLY CROSS CHURCH SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2021 MENDOTA, ILLINOIS

Renowned speaker and author Fr. Michael Gaitley tells the dramatic history of God's love and mercy as

interwoven through the transformative message of St. Faustina, the miraculous appearance of Mary at

Fatima, the witness of Maximilian Kolbe, and the world-changing papacy of Pope St. John Paul II.

Featuring the brilliant cinematic artistry of the Augustine Institute's film studio, the vast panorama of

God's work of mercy in the world unfolds as a story to be experienced.

One session down and nine to go in our 10-session study Divine Mercy in the Second Greatest

Story Ever Told. Last week we learned that the fall of mankind into sin has distorted our image of

God, and we saw how God has established his School of Trust in order to pave the way for us to

realize that God is “merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and

faithfulness” (see Exodus 34:6). We will meet again via Zoom on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Maybe

you can join us this week!

We still have a number of Participant Guides available—just call the office to reserve your copy! For

any additional information or to have questions addressed, please call the parish office in the

afternoon Mon—Fri between the hours of 1:30 and 4:30 p.m.

This will again utilize the Zoom meeting information that Father Pilon has arranged (the same

information to log on for viewing the Mass—see p. 2 of the bulletin); we have found that watching

the video on your own prior to the meeting works best, and then for the meeting we will discuss

each week’s material.

If you have not yet utilized the parish’s Formed subscription, this is a perfect opportunity to find

out what a wonderful tool for evangelizing, studying, praying, and even being entertained is being

provided. To set up an account for yourself is simple—just go to the website, https://formed.org,

click on the “Sign Up” button, then select “Sign up as a parishioner” and then look for Holy Cross

Mendota in the search window under “Create a New Account.” Easy Peasy!!

Lenten Prayer

Almighty and Everlasting God,

You have given the human race

Jesus Christ our Savior as a model of

humility.

He fulfilled Your Will by becoming Man

and giving His life on the Cross.

by following His example of suffering

and make us worthy to share in His Resurrection.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ,

Your Son.
