SANDBACH remains at the mercy of private developers according to local politicians. Local Labour councillors have now called for contingency plans to save the area from development while it is unprotected by a Local Plan. Sandbach Labour councillor Sam Corcoran said: “The Local Plan determines where houses should and should not be built in Cheshire East. “It its absence private developers can dictate where to build houses, even building on Greenfield sites that would not normally be considered.

“In 2014 the government Inspector examining the Local Plan expressed grave concerns about the Local Plan, leading to a suspension of the examination. “The latest comments by the Inspector are deeply disturbing as he points out that Cheshire East’s predictions of new jobs to be created in the plan period have increased by 250% but the prediction of new homes required has only increased by 33%. “The Inspector has also noticed that local people are being ignored, saying, ‘I remain

concerned about the apparent lack of engagement with other parties, who do not seem to have been involved in the Technical Workshops or in decisions about the amount and distribution of new development’.” Labour have repeatedly advised the council to make contingency plans in case the existing Local Plan cannot be fixed within the six-month

suspension period. Cllr Corcoran added: “The Conservatives have let loose private developers, hoping that free enterprise will solve the housing shortage. “As a result, planning is currently out of control in Cheshire East, with speculative housing applications being granted on Greenfield sites.” Cllr Mo Grant added: “The Conservatives are treating the council’s own scrutiny committees with contempt. “They didn’t even bother to produce a written report on the progress of the Local Plan.”

THE new president of Sandbach Crosses Rotary Club has pledged the club’s backing to St Luke’s Hospice. Rotarian Sheila Gregory handed over the presidency to Tony Wilford earlier this month. Sheila gave a brief review of the past year, highlighting some of the club’s charity events and activities, which had raised some £7,000 for good causes. Those who benefited include the North West Air Ambulance, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and St Lukes Hospice. The club also sponsored one of the shows in the Sandbach Concert Series. New president Tony Wilford said: “My aim is to help people less fortunate than ourselves

in any way we can, by fund raising, charitable help, assisting in the community and internationally. “My chosen charity is St Lukes (Cheshire) Hospice for their invaluable care in the community.” Tony organised a recent visit to the Picnic in the Park at Arley Hall in support of Winsford’s NeuroMuscular Centre. Pictured are Neville Thornhill, Godfrey and Jean Williams, David Till and Joan Thornhill enjoying the picnic before the rain. The club meets at 7.30pm on Tuesdays at Gee’s Kitchen. New members are welcome and can call rotarian Ron Smith on 01270 764254.

CRIMINALS travelling across county borders were targeted earlier this month in Sandbach as part of Operation Crossbow. The operation involved Cheshire Police, along with forces in Greater Manchester, Derbyshire, Staffordshire and West Mercia. It was aimed at disrupting criminal activity across the region and denying criminals the use of the roads. Using the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, officers were able to monitor virtually every vehicle which crossed the border between the five counties. The operation got off to a successful start when officers arrested four men on suspicion of burglary as they made their way to the operational briefing in Sandbach. In addition there were also over 700 vehicles stops and 60 vehicles seized. In total there were 23 arrests, including, four on suspicion of burglary, three for possession

with intent to supply class A drugs, two meen wanted on warrant, two disqualified drivers, three positive roadside drugs tests, two on suspicion of theft and two on suspicion of affray. Meanwhile Cheshire Police Chief Constable Simon Byrne was involved on the arrest of a man on the A500 near Crewe who was arrested for possession of an offensive weapon. Inspector Stuart York said:“We are relentless in our pursuit of organised crime and will use a whole host of tactics to disrupt criminals working in our region. “Criminals do not simply stop committing crimes when they reach the police border, but instead they rely on the road network to enable them to commit criminal offences. “There is a strong link between the illegal use of vehicles and other serious and organised crime, which is why we are working together with our colleagues to target these criminals as they travel across the region.”

SANDBACH residents confronted a burglar in their home in the early hours of Sunday July 5. The incident happened ay around 2.30am at an address in Birch Gardens. A Cheshire Police spoksman said: “During the incident the offender is believed to have entered the address though a rear insecure door. “Once inside the address he was confronted by the occupiers of the property and then fled the scene, taking with

him the victim’s house and car keys.” The offender is described as a white man, of slim build. At the time of the incident he was wearing a white top and trousers. Anyone with any information in relation to the incident is asked to contact Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 176 of 5/7/15. Alternatively information can be reported anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

SANDBACH School has secured funding to improve the site’s security. The school originally bid for funding in December following observations made by Ofsted during their November visit about the openness of the school. In response the school commissioned an independent safeguarding report and the key recommendation from it was that the school should look to limit access onto the site. A school spokesman said: “The school is quite unusual in that there are several points of access onto the site both by the general public and residential addresses. “Over the last few months, the school has worked proactively to build a solution which addresses the observations outlined above.”

The measures, which will be paid for by the Education Funding Agency, will include eight-foot fencing across the front of the school to protect it from open access during the school day. There will also be some six-foot fencing added around the outer perimeter of the school site where currently there are inadequate barriers between the areas accessible by the public and the school site. There will be various gates in key locations to ensure students and visitors are able to access the site during the school day. These access points will be controlled by the school’s main reception. A provision has been made in the plans to preserve the access path from Middlewich Road to Crewe Road through the school site.

THE 16th annual Donkey Derby was held at Sandbach Rugby Club this month. The event was free for the first time with various activities in addition to the traditional Donkey Derby which was run throughout the day only pausing for a local band California Blue to play a few tunes from the 1960’s between races. This year also included a number of stalls including the Air Ambulance and Cancer Research fundraisers. Other activities on the day included a Community Police display, a plate smashing stall and a ‘hit the rat’ game, along with zorbing and bubble football.

by STEWART GREENELWORTH Park was the scene of aa Alice in Wonderland-themed fun day earlier this month. Activties included a coconut shy, picture hunt and various

stalls including a Cheshire Cat and a cake stall Jenny Baker dressed as the Mad Hatter while Town Mayor Gill Merry and her husband manned the coconut shy.

SANDBACH’S Miola store marked its anniversary with a special celebration this month. The store welcomed a visit from CBeebies presenter Alex Winters. Alex first appeared in Sandbach at the 2010 Transport Festival to entertain youngsters and he did the same this time with various activities at the shop in Ettley Heath. Other activities at the event included various stalls, a bouncy castle, hook-a-duck and entertainment provided by characters from Frozen and an ABBA tribute duo who sang hits from the group. This is the third year that the store has celebrated its opening since it was established in 2012.

The Foxes’ efforts to return to winning ways fell victim to the weather as they took on Audley earlier this month. Cruel fate even prevented the additional three overs that would have brought the winning draw points into contention. In the event Elworth were ahead on run rate and would have gained the five extra points but Jupitus Pluvius had other ideas and the rain that arrived during the tea interval did not relent until well after 6pm. Audley’s innings was adorned by a splendid effort by Dean Bedson. Going in with the score 6/1 he displayed a full range of strokes, constructing a solid base before becoming more expansive. He hit 11 fours and one six and was most unfortunate to be denied a century when Chris Regan caught him at deep square leg off Mike Holt’s

bowling for 95. He was well supported here by Jamie Jervis, who came to Audley from Wood Lane a couple of years ago. In a partnership of 101 for the fourth wicket he and Bedson scored steadily. They were pleased with their 201 and would have been optimistic until the rain arrived. Elworth toiled in the field and had to rely on Yasir, Holt and Chris Winter as Dayle Honess broke a finger fielding against Stone in the Talbot Cup quarter-final the previous Sunday. The pitch did not suit Yasir although the big paceman still finished with 4/84 and got through a punishing 25 overs in three spells. Chris Regan’s two catches mean he has a catch in every league game this season, a remarkable statistic for a non-wicketkeeper. Nick Allsop made a number of important saves and generally

speaking the fielding was an improvement over the previous week. The restart was tricky for the Foxes - they had little to gain with the winning draw possibility now denied them. The rain got heavier as the

innings got under way but the umpires were resolute and play continued until the 27th over. The match finished as a draw with Audley 201/5 (55 overs), and Elworth 114/7 (27 overs), Audley received 8 points, Elworth 4.

WEATHER PREVAILSEnglish summer intervenes as Foxes fight for points
