Council leaders say new evidence gathered during the suspension of the examination of the Local Plan shows that the borough’s economy is likely to grow much more quickly than expected. They insist that the increase in new homes – needed to provide for rising numbers of aspirational working families – will be achieved without any major impact on the green belt. Economic development consultants have projected an average growth rate of 0.7 per cent per year between now and 2030. As a result, the council has to make plans to accommodate an estimated 31,410 new jobs, likely to be created in Cheshire East by 2030. The initial version of the Local Plan envisaged net jobs growth of 13,900. This growth would create a need for 36,000 new homes by 2030 – 7,000 more than were identified in the submitted version of the Local Plan. CHESHIRE East is set for a massive increase in jobs and homes over the next 15 years, according to a series of reports.

This growth would create a need for 36,000 new homes by 2030 – 7,000 more than were identified in the submitted

version of the Local Plan. Council leader Michael Jones said: “When we began work on the Local Plan in 2009, we were in the midst of a deep recession, during which the UK’s GDP fell by 7.2 per cent. “In 2012, the sun started shining again and Cheshire East is now in the midst of a jobs boom. “Because a good proportion of our existing workforce will

reach retirement age in the next few years, this means that we need to attract more people into the Borough to maintain our strong economy. “Cheshire East is a victim of its own success. Unless we want to see our roads clogged by a huge increase in commuter journeys into the area, we need to provide more housing locally to accommodate the likely increase in the number of people working in the borough.” Council leaders said the extent of the work undertaken (cont. p7)

MORE employment sites are needed in Sandbach say local councillors Cheshire East Council’s response to the Sandbach Neighbourhood Plan was discussed at a meeting at Westfields last month. Sandbach councillor Sam Corcoran said: “Whilst generally supportive, the response questioned whether there was a reasonable prospect of the site by Junction 17 of the M6 being developed as a business park and suggested that the policy should re-worked so as to allow more housing. “Sandbach has lost a lot of employment with the closure of Fodens and ERF and the redevelopment of those sites for housing. “The site by Junction 17 is ideal

for a new world class science and business park, but it is a poor site for housing because there is no safe pedestrian access to a primary school or other facilities. Nevertheless, the Conservatives have been pushing for housing on the business park site.” Labour’s recent Parliamentary Candidate for Congleton, Darren Price said, “The plans for the J17 business park site in the Neighbourhood Plan are almost identical to the plans for that site in the draft Cheshire East Local Plan. “So by raising concerns about the Neighbourhood Plan, the council are effectively calling into question their own Local Plan. It is no wonder that planning in Cheshire East is in such a mess!”

A SANDBACH family have paid tribute to a woman who died in a road collision at Moston. Janet Thompson, aged 72, had been driving her Honda Civic along the A533 Booth Lane at around 2pm on Saturday 16 May when she was involved in a collision with a white Toyota Hilux and a red DAF HGV. Sadly she died at the scene. The driver of the Toyota Hilux, a 20-year-old local man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been released on bail pending further investigations. Janet’s son Robert Thompson

said: “Our family are still trying to come to terms with the tragic loss of our beloved Mum, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, and Sister, who was taken from us. “Janet was the cornerstone of the family and well loved by all. “The family would like to ask for privacy, in order to come to terms with our loss.” Police want to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident. Anyone who can help should call PC Tony Hayhurst on 101 quoting incident number 472 of the 16 May 2015.

A NEW group has been launched in Sandbach to protect the area’s footpaths and rights of way. The Sandbach Footpath Group has been set up to protect, improve and extend the network of footpaths in and around Sandbach, and to make them more accessible. One of the first tasks the group has set itself is to put up some way markers to let people know

where these footpaths are. A longer term task is to produce leaflets describing the footpaths to add to the footpath guides that already exist for the town. The group needs members to help in these tasks. Anyone who is interested in helping out with this new project can contact the group through [email protected] or 01270 765549.

DESPITE the end of the club season, Sandbach rugby players were in action recently as four of them represented the senior Cheshire team versus Yorkshire. Sandbach RUFC provided four players to the victorious Senior Cheshire team that beat Yorkshire 25-19 at Doncaster. One of the four, Forbes Edwards was among the Cheshire try scorers. Having four players represent the county is a huge achievement for Sandbach and illustrates the strides taken in player development at the club. Pad Davenport, director of Rugby at Sandbach said: “Whilst we are a strictly amateur club we are able

to offer players of all abilities the facilities, coaching and camaraderie to maximise their potential and enjoyment of our game. “We have proven that our system works and any player at any level who has ambitions to improve their rugby and challenge themselves to reach their true potential should seriously think about joining Sandbach. “If you are serious about your rugby and want to see dramatic improvements in skills and fitness then we’d love to hear from you.” Pad Davenport may be contacted on 07729 783554. • Pictured are (left to right) Jack Leech, Matt Beesley, Nick Allsop and Forbes Edwards.

CHESHIRE police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision between a HGV and a motorcyclist on the A533 Sandbach Road in Betchton on Thursday April 23. A HGV turned left from the A533 into the B5078 Chells Hill at approximately 3.17pm when the collision occurred. Sadly the rider of the motorcycle, a 19-year-old man from Sandbach, was declared dead at the scene. The driver of the HGV, a 44-year-old man, was arrested at the scene and has since been released on police bail. PC Gary Mullins said: “We are keen to trace the driver of a white transit van who was heading towards Sandbach behind the HGV which was a blue and orange ‘HEIJBOER’ transport lorry. “The driver initially stopped but

then left the scene and may not be aware of the seriousness of the accident. “We would also like to trace the drivers of three vehicles that were approaching the A533 from the B5078 just prior to the accident. These vehicles are described as a white saloon and two black hatch backs one possible a Honda. “One final vehicle that police are keen to speak to is the driver of a small black vehicle with a white roof possibly a Mini. This vehicle was travelling towards Rode Heath along the A533 and passed the HGV just prior to the collsion.” Anyone with any information about the collision or knowledge of the above vehicles should contact PC Gary Mullins on contact 101 quoting incident number 604 of 23 April 2015.

SOME 56 bridge enthusiasts from across South Cheshire took part in a recent bridge drive at the Sandbach Masonic Hall. The event was organised to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society. The drive used a Chicago format with an interval to enjoy a specially prepared cream tea. Prizes were donated by local businesses, and awarded to the winning pair, as well as those pairs finishing in 5th, 13th and 27th places. A total of £453.50 was raised for the Alzheimer’s Society. Stuart Clark, a member of the Crewe & Nantwich Fundraising Group of the Alzheimer’s Society and the main organiser, said: “The event was a great success, being the second of its kind in Sandbach, and we hope to run it again next year. “We are very grateful to all the local bridge players

who supported the event so enthusiastically. “All the funds raised will support the local services in the Crewe and Nantwich area, including the staff based at our office in Crewe. “They are increasingly busy providing information and support primarily to carers of dementia sufferers. The Society also runs a number of local activities to help both dementia sufferers and their carers.” Dave Whitworth, Crewe & Nantwich Fundraising Group Chair, said: ’We are a relatively small local fundraising group of volunteers, and always on the lookout for people to help us, so if anyone is interested in volunteering for the Society, please get in touch. “If people are looking for local information and support regarding dementia, please contact us on 01270 501901 or 01625 503302.”

(cont. from front)to gather the new evidence – covering economic strategy, housing need, green belt and spatial distribution – demonstrates that the Council is doing everything possible to support the Local Plan process and secure an early resumption of the examination.

They said the evidence released by the council will inform further work, to be submitted to the Inspector by the end of July in line with the agreed timetable. It is anticipated that initial examination hearings will then resume in the early autumn time.

A POORLY Sandbach boy who wanted to star in his own superhero movie has had his wish granted. Lewis Hussain, aged seven, was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome and only has one functioning lung. His condition is incurable and is managed through heart surgery and medication. In between his care, Lewis enjoys watching superhero shows, so the Make-A-Wish Foundation - with Charlotte Knight Productions - sent Lewis and his family to London for filming.

Lewis starred as Fast Heat in his film - Trouble in Sector 51. Mum Laura, said: “The wish has helped him focus on what he can do, not what he can’t.“The experience was so special and meant so much - it really did make Lewis feel like a superhero.”

ELWORTH have returned to winning ways with a second away victory. A Cheshire Cup win at Cheadle Hulme gave Elworth a lift following defeat against Blythe and they travelled to table-topping Sandyford with some optimism. There was just one change

from the previous league game with Jack Bamford returning ti the line-up. Sandyford elected to bat on winning the toss but were soon in difficulty as Yasir Ali in familiar fashion got to work. But he wasn’t the only one to shine on the day as Sandyford 113, lost to Elworth 114 for 7.

Club spokesman Lee Morris said: “Chris Winter’s innings was superb, he injected real backbone into the innings, and batted for close to an hour and a half to ensure his side got home. “The side is benefiting from the earlier exposure of his batting. In the bowling

department he has already bowled 58 overs this season, he only bowled 68 all last year and he has 11 wickets compared to 9 all last season. “This has the makings of being a very good year for the skipper and his contribution to the morale of the camp is also not to be underestimated.”
