The Save-A-Limb Fund provides financial

assistance to children and adults who have complex limb and joint disorders.

We Put Our Mission FIRST!

The Save-A-Limb Fund supports children and adults who have complex limb and joint disorders by saving their limbs, preserving their joints and enhancing the quality of their lives.

I nTeRnATIOnAL OuTReACH AnD MISSIOn WORk:Serve patients abroad by enabling the RIAO’s specialized medical staff to travel to impoverished areas around the world to provide orthopedic treatment. SCHOLARSHIP:Award one academic scholarship per year to a current or former patient who is pursuing a career in healthcare. Provide educational opportunities for orthopedic surgeons from all over the world to learn new surgical techniques and treatment methods.

TeCHnICAL IMPROVeMenTS:Acquire specialized medical equipment that enhances treatment methods and improves patient outcomes.

About the RIAO

Home to some of the world's most renowned orthopedic surgeons, the RIAO offers state-of-the-art treatment in a variety of orthopedic services for both children and adults. Our medical team of more than 250 professionals performs approximately 4,300 orthopedic procedures and conducts more than 36,000 office visits annually. The RIAO has four Centers of excellence:

The International Center for Limb Lengthening is a global leader in treating children and adults with upper and lower limb length discrepancies, limb deformities, bone defects, bone infections, foot deformities and short stature.

The Center for Joint Preservation and Replacement is a nationally recognized, multidisciplinary orthopedic institution for the comprehensive treatment of hip, knee and shoulder arthritis, painful joint disorders and injuries.

The Center for Diabetic Limb Preservation works to decrease the likelihood of foot or leg amputation due to diabetes, peripheral vascular disease and chronic wounds.

The Center for Hand and upper extremity Surgery diagnoses and treats patients with conditions that affect the fingers, hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder.

The RIAO is located at Sinai Hospital and Northwest Hospital, and has grown to include office locations in Catonsville, Eldersburg, Ellicott City, Mt. Airy, Owings Mills, Westminster and White Marsh. To learn more about the RIAO, please visit RubinInstitute.com.

The Save-A-Limb Fund is overseen by Dr. Shawn Standard, Head of Pediatric Orthopedics at the International Center for Limb Lengthening, and Dr. John Herzenberg, Director of the International Center for Limb Lengthening and of Pediatric Orthopedics at Sinai Hospital.

One in 125 children is born with a limb deficiency and many others suffer from limb deformities. Some children undergo amputation because they do not have the resources to travel to a specialist and pay for limb lengthening or reconstruction surgery.

Over time, many people’s joints wear down creating painful conditions that make simply walking to the door an excruciating task. Whether from degeneration, arthritis or injury, some people are unable to receive treatment because they cannot afford the cost of surgery or physical therapy.

Grateful Patients of the RIAO

MicahDoctors initially misdiagnosed Micah with Brittle Bone Disease, but his parents, Robert and Joanna, were determined to get a second opinion. They traveled from West Virginia to meet with Dr. Herzenberg, who diagnosed Micah with Proximal Femoral Focal Deficiency (PFFD). “The family was thrilled to have a diagnosis that was treatable with limb lengthening, a specialty in which Dr. Herzenberg is world renowned,” his parents shared. Dr. Herzenberg developed a treatment plan designed to equalize Micah's lower limb discrepancy. After one of Micah’s surgeries, the family needed to stay in the area for two months for follow-up visits and physical therapy five days a week. The Save-A-Limb Fund assisted the family with the cost of housing at Sinai’s Hackerman-Patz House so Micah could receive the intensive rehabilitation he needed.

BarbaraBarbara was a competitive cyclist before she had to stop biking due to severe pain in her hip. In 2015 she underwent hip replacement surgery at the RIAO. Now she is able to resume her passion of biking pain-free. Barbara and her husband, Rick, were so thankful for the quality of care she received that they have supported the Save-A-Limb Fund every year by bringing a team to the annual fundraiser.

AnickaAnicka was born with radial clubhand, and her parents found it hard to find information on the condition in the Czech Republic. Through a Facebook group, her parents, Helena and Honza, learned that Dr. Standard holds online chats where people can ask questions and learn about treatment options. That chat with Dr. Standard began the journey that would bring them to the RIAO in Baltimore for ulnarization surgery, a procedure that surgeons in their country did not perform. The Save-A-Limb Fund helped to cover Anicka’s initial clinical evaluation visit, including x-rays and the development of a treatment plan, that would ultimately keep them in Baltimore for six months. Helena says, “We are very satisfied and grateful for everything, and we don’t take it for granted. It is not common in our country to have this level of support.”
