Feast of Christ the King 3

sthugo.org | sthugoschool.org

As we conclude this series on

Sixteen Documents of Vacan II, we

will discuss the three Declaraons,

which focus on Chrisan Educaon,

Relaonship of the Church to Non

Chrisan Religions, and on Religious

Freedom. We will discover that a

Vacan II Declaraon “usually

addresses an area that may be, by

its nature, controversial and in need

of further doctrinal

development” (Huebsch, The

Council, Book 1, p102).

The  Declara*on  on  Chris*an

Educa*on was ““approved on

October 28, 1965, by a vote of 2,290

to 35” (Huebsch, The Decrees and

Declara"ons, Book 3, pp224225).

The Declaraon’s focus is on formal

educaon in schools, especially the

universal right to an educaon.

Since Vacan II, several documents

have followed, which connues

today. Two principles stand out:

“First, every person regardless of

age, race, or social condi"ons has

an inalienable right to an educa"on

… It is a special concern of ours that

young people be assisted in the full

development of their persons:

physical, moral, sexual, social, and

intellectual … Second, all the faithful

likewise have a right to a Chris"an

educa"on, advancing in

understanding the faith and

growing mature as faithful persons.

We especially affirm liturgical

worship as a means toward this end

… Third, parent who give life to

children have a firm duty to educate

them as well. Parents are, in fact,

the first and foremost educators of

their children within a family

atmosphere animated with love,

providing a wellrounded

forma"on” (Huebsch, The Decrees

and Declara"ons, Book 3, pp197

198).

The Declaraon on the Relaonship

of the Church to NonChrisan

Religions was “approved on October

28, 1965, by a vote of 2,221 to

88” (Huebsch, The Decrees and

Declara"ons, Book 3, pp225226).

The focus of this Declaraon is on

the Churches relaonship with

Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and

Islam. The document encourages

dialogue, and states that “condemns

every form of persecu"on or

discrimina"on” (Huebsch, The

Decrees and Declara"ons, Book 3,

p226).

The  Declara*on  on  Religious

Freedom was “approved on

December 7, 1965, by a vote of

2,308 to 70” (Huebsch, The Decrees

and Declara"ons, Book 3, p226). Of

all sixteen documents, this

Declaraon was the most

controversial. The focus is on

“freedom of persons requires that

no one ever be forced to join the

Church” (Huebsch, The Decrees and

Declara"ons, Book 3, p226). Fr. John

Courtney Murray said: “this was the

most extensive discussion on

religious freedom every held in the

history of the Church” (Huebsch, The

Decrees and Declara"ons, Book 3,

p69). The Declaraon states: “The

Second Vacan Council hereby

declares that human beings have a

right to religious liberty. This means

that no one is to be forced by other

individuals, by social groups, or by

any other human power regarding

religious ma9ers” (Huebsch, The

Decrees and Declara"ons, Book 3,

p73).

Today’s  Gospel  for  the  34

th

  Sunday  in  Ordinary  Time

affirms  Christ’s  royal  dignity  to  Pilate,  clarifies  any

misconcep ons  regarding  the  mission  of  Jesus,  and

reminds us to listen to the words of Jesus.  In the Preface

for  today,  the  priest  prayed  that  Christ  “making all

created things subject to his rule, he might present to the

immensity of your (God’s) majesty an eternal and

universal kingdom, a kingdom of truth and life, a kingdom

of holiness and grace, a kingdom of jusce, love and

peace.”   As we end this Liturgical Year, we are reminded

that God is calling us

• to be people of truth who give life to one another,

• to be people of holiness who are reminders of God’s

grace,

• and to be people of jus ce and love who bring peace

to all we meet.

Next  Sunday,  the  Church  Year  begins  with  the  First

Sunday  of  Advent  and  Christ’s  life  will  be  presented

through the Gospel of Luke, which  is the longest book  in

the New Testament and  the  longest of  the  four gospels.

It  is  important  to  note  that  the  Gospel  of  Luke  and  the

Acts of the Apostles is a twovolume work from the same

person.

The Gospel of Luke begins with appearances of the Angel

Gabriel  announcing  to  both  Zechariah  and  to Mary  that

they will experience miraculous births.  There are stories

that only appear in the Gospel of Luke:  the prodigal son,

the  good  Samaritan, Mary  and Martha,  and  the  road  to

Emmaus.    Each  day  in  the  Liturgy  of  the  Hours  or  the

Divine  Office,  there  are  three  songs  that  are  sung  from

the Gospel of Luke:

1. in  the  morning  the  Benedictus  or  Can cle  of

Zechariah (Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel …),

2. in the evening the Magnificat or Can cle of Mary (My

soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord …),

3. and at night  the Nunc Dimi<s or Can cle of Simeon

(Lord, now you let your servant go in peace …).

Also,  in  the Gospel  of  Luke, we find  the first  half  of  the

Hail Mary (Hail Mary, full of grace …).

In  the Mass  texts  for  St.  Luke’s  feast day on October 18

we prayed:

“Lord God, who chose Saint Luke to reveal by his

preaching and wrings the mystery of your love for the

poor, grant that those who already glory in your name

may persevere as one heart and one soul and that all

naons may merit to see your salvaon. Through our

Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you

in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and

ever” (The Roman Missal 2008, p831).

LADIES OF CHARITY THANK YOU!

It  is our pleasure to announce that Ladies of Charity has

once  again  been  awarded  a  $5,000  grant  from  the

Catholic Foundaon of Michigan.  We are blessed by the

Catholic  Foundaon  connually  supporng  our  Clothes

Closet  and  Food  Pantry.      Our  project  this  year  will  be

focused  on  rered  religious  communies  that  lack

financial  resources  to  meet  the  nutrional  and  health

care  needs  of  their  aging  members.      While

supplemenng  their  food  budget  with  fresh  fruit  and

vegetables our hope is to assist those who have served us

in past years and improve their lives with be:er nutrion.

Our objecve is to involve the Ladies of Charity members

and  recruit  student  volunteers  on  a  connuous  basis

from surrounding area Catholic high schools to introduce

the students to religious communies on a personal basis

and  fulfill  their  service  hours  over  the yearlong  period.

This exposure will be an an introducon to these religious

communies  in  their  young  lives  and  hopefully

encourage vocaons in their future life.

If  you’d  like  to  help  us  in  accomplishing  this  effort,  you
