The Sacramento Recorder Society A place for early music of all kinds in Sacramento

Dear Recorder Society members, In striking contrast, the holiday sea-son with its celebration of light and the darker, colder season of the year are upon us, bringing forth our annual need for shared warmth, comfort, and entertain-ment. And speaking of entertainment, we have the stimulating and fun prospect of two sessions working together with Jerry Schwartz ! We’ll be working on music chosen especially for us, some of which we will play for family and friends in the New Year. Many of us are also practicing together, preparing a variety of short se-lections to present at our Soupe and Mu-sick Winter Party, enjoying comradeship and the exploration of new pieces. I am sure old-timers and newer members alike are looking forward to this now traditional gathering at the close of the winter holi-days—and planning ahead for favorite soups. In this turbulent time nationally, we have music to soothe us, to stimulate our mental focus and creative expression, and

We will again be conducted in De-cember by one of our favorite Recorder Soci-ety members, Jerry Schwartz. An experi-enced trumpet-player (almost half a century), he’s earned the right to that personalized li-cense plate! Every month Jerry drives the fifty miles from Stockton to the Friends Meeting House to meet and play recorder. When we have an early-music specialist as conductor, Jerry’s ability to change instruments at a mo-ment’s notice, and his cogent comments on the music and composers indicate his exten-sive studies at the UOP Conservatory of Mu-sic and his experience playing with the Stockton and Lodi Symphonies. When he is conducting SRS, his pa-tience and ability to put up with our shenani-gans refer to skills he learned from teaching the kids of Manteca for three and a half dec-ades. His good-naturedness and his profes-sionalism are qualities we admire. Huzzah!

Thanks to Elsa Morrison and Cheryl Precivale who brought our November re-freshments! Have you signed up to bring something? There’ll be a sign up sheet on the table in the foyer at the December meet-ing. It need not be fancy; bags of Oreos are welcome!

A Victorian Christmas in Nevada City!A Victorian Christmas in Nevada City!A Victorian Christmas in Nevada City!A Victorian Christmas in Nevada City!

The Nevada City Recorder Society invites any interested recorder players to join us for Victorian Christmas. Celebrate the holidays in our beautiful town the old fashioned way with music, street food and vendors, carriage rides, and costumed per-formers. We hear that Father Christmas will be making an appearance! We supply the music; just come and play. The dates are Sundays, December 4, 11, and 18 from 1:30-2:30pm and Wed- nesdays from 5:00-6:00pm. We will meet on Commercial Street, probably on the Boardwalk near Pine. The December 4th date is also the recorder society meeting up here, from 4:30-7 p.m. at the Madelyn Helling Li-brary. For more information, contact Kathryn Canan, [email protected]. For directions and parking informa-tion, see http://www.nevadacitychamber.com/nevada-city-events/victorian-christmas/

SRS Non-Member Meeting Policy

About the Sacramento Recorder About the Sacramento Recorder About the Sacramento Recorder About the Sacramento Recorder SocietySocietySocietySociety

The Sacramento Recorder Society, founded in 1982, is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization. It is a chapter of the American Recorder Society and an affiliate of the San Francisco Early Music Society. We welcome recorder players of all ages and abilities as well as players of other early music instruments such as lutes, viols, sackbuts, shawms, curtals, krummhorns, and percussion. Beginners are urged to study privately and learn fingerings and be-come comfortable reading music before joining the recorder orchestra. We meet monthly from September through June, from 6:45pm to 9:30pm on the first Tuesday of each month, at the Friends Meeting House, 890 57th Street, between J St. and H St. Most of our meet-ings are conducted by a professional early music specialist who teaches recorder tech-nique and relevant music history and theory while exploring music of many eras. Many of our members also play in smaller groups in members’ homes during the rest of the month.
