Hello fellow recorder enthusiasts! Iam in my fourth year serving asboard secretary for Denver ChapterARS. I take meeting minutes andkeep a running member list for thedirectory. My interest in recorderstarted four years ago, when I tookup playing soprano with the EarlyMusic Ensemble at MSU Denver. Itook lessons for a year with JanetHandmaker, who helpedgreatly withmy technique. I also took up alto

recorder. I’m hoping to add a bentneck tenor with keys for my smallhands to my recorder collection soon.I’m also hoping to devote more timeto practicing in 2017, to betterimprove my sight reading andenjoyment of playing.

I became involved in music, joining asmall church choir when my 3 kidswere little. That progressed to takingpiano lessons. I then took up thestudy of music and psychology as adual major at MSU Denver in the mid1990s when my youngest startedkindergarten. I devoted my musicalstudies to voice and music history, most notably the medieval andRenaissance periods, composersMachaut, Ciconia, and DuFay, andthe isorhythmic motet for which Iwrote my thesis. I earned my BA in2000, the same year my oldest childgraduated high school. I took somegraduate studies in musicology withan emphasis in early music notationand performance practice. Though Idid not complete my master’s, Ideveloped a good knowledge base inthose two disciplines, which hashelped with my ensembleinvolvement. I sing and play recorderwith the Early Music Ensemble atMSU Denver. In years past, I alsosang in professional and auditionedchamber choirs, including St. Martin’sChamber Choir and AugustanaLutheran Chamber Choir. Thehighlight of my graduation year waswhen I was able to travel with the

Augustana Choir to Vienna, Austria, and various parts of Italy the summerof 2000. I sang in numerous venues, including the Duomo of Santa Mariadel Fiore, for which DuFay composedthe beautiful motet Nuper rosarumflores for its consecration in 1436: asignificant item to check off mybucket list.

When I am not musically involved, Ienjoy spending time with my twograndchildren, my husband Bob andmy kids, now adults. I raise chickensfor eggs, 6 of them, and have takenup organic gardening with an urbanhomestead feel. I enjoy working withmy hands, building things, and beingcreative in fiber arts, knitting &crocheting. I also love spending timesoaking in the hot mineral springs inour lovely Colorado backyard, especially when it snows. Who’s in?

Highland Chamber OrchestraGreetings from the Highland ChamberOrchestra. Time sure flies. Thisincarnation of the orchestra started inJanuary of 2007, so we have beenplaying for ten years. There are still afew of the original players left but wehave lots of new ones. The orchestra isa blend of keyboard, modern strings(played with baroque bows), earlystrings, and recorders and early flutes, and plucked strings. Since lutes werepopular for over 300 years, pluckedstrings work well.

We have sight read an immense amountof music in the last 10 years, and nowwe get to do it again. Skill levels haveimproved a lot.
