Happy 2019, everyone!

Can you believe that it’s 2019 al-ready? Time seems to be flying by. There’s so much craziness going on out there in the world: the politics, the shut-down, the weather, global warming, shoot-ings and soooo much more that is happen-ing. I am thankful to be a part of the won-derful group of people who are members of the Sacramento Recorder Society. Our tenth Soupe and Musick night was a great antidote to the things that stress us. Thanks to Patty and her family for all the decorations and set up, Robert for his signature cupcakes, and all the soup mak-ers for the delicious soup. Thank you to all the talented members of the performing groups, David who was once again our fabulous MC, and to all of you who at-tended. It gets better every year. And the performances were so diverse-from Afri-can music to early European to modern popular music. It was the best way to spend a winter evening.

Tuesday, February 5, 2019

at the Friends Meeting House

890 57th Street between J St. and H St.

But sadly, we heard from Jerry Schwartz’ wife Claudia about his passing on January 18. He has been a stalwart of this group, an amazing friend, musician, conductor and teacher. There is more re-garding dear Jerry in this newsletter. It is hard to imagine that he has departed. I am still in shock. We will be doing two piec-es of music to honor Jerry at the next meeting on February 5th with Francis Feldon as our conductor. I hope you all can attend.

So, here’s to an awesome new year ahead and we hope everyone will be hap-py, healthy and playing music.

See you on February 5th, Gail Crawford, Co-President

Frances Feldon is quite sure she was a trou-badour in a former life; in her present exist-ence, she performs on baroque flute and recorder, and is a conductor, educator, and arranger. She has performed with American Bach Soloists, California Bach Society, Marin Baroque, Sonoma Bach, Ensemble Mirabile, and in conjunction with the Berkeley Early Music Festival. Ms Feldon was a recipient of the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology recorder residency. She is mu-sic director of the baroque/contemporary chamber music ensemble Flauti Diversi, and a principal conductor for The Barbary Coast Recorder Orchestra. She is a regular conductor and faculty member at recorder workshops throughout North America, and has taught at UC Davis and Indiana Univer-sity. She directed the San Francisco Early Music Society's Recorder Workshop for

nearly twenty years. Ms Feldon has con-ducted her recorder orchestra arrange-ments of Gershwin and Ellington classics at international recorder festivals and writes about jazz recorder players for the magazine American Recorder. Dr Feldon received a Doctor of Music in collegium directing at Indiana University’s Early Music Institute. Flauti Diversi released its CD of Joseph Bodin de Boismortier’s complete Opus 37 trio sonatas for baroque flute, viola da gamba and chamber organ (available on CDBaby and Amazon).

Me Too: Music from the Court of Margaret of Austria

Marguerite of Austria (1480-1530) was one of the most powerful royal women in Europe at the time, and a great patroness of the arts, especially music, but she had a very sad life. She was responsible for the compilation of several chansonniers (song books), including her commission of the one we will explore in this class: the large, elaborately decorated chansonnier known as Brussels, Bibliotheque royale MS 228. This collection reflects both Marguerite’s personal musical taste, and the world from which it sprang: there is an intimate con-nection between the content of the book to her court and biography. Some of the texts were written by Marguerite herself. Com-posers represented in the collections in-clude all the greats of the Franco-Flemish tradition: Ockeghem, Obrecht, Agricola, Pipelare, Josquin, De la Rue, and others. We will play selections by Marguerite’s favorite composer, Pierre de la Rue, and Johannes Ockeghem.

Pierre de la Rue, “Mijn hert “

Pierre de la Rue, “Fraw Margretsen lied (Pour ung jamais)” Johannes Ockeghem, “Petite camusette” Pierre de la Rue “Plores, gemir, crier/Requiem “

Jerry Arnold Schwartz (1949-2019)

A graduate of University of the Pacific's Conservatory. (Jerry Schwartz) was a musician through and through. He spent 35 years as a music educator for Man-teca Unified where he taught students from elementary through high school, conducted the honor band as well as a multi-school marching band for the an-nual Christmas parade. In addition to teaching, Jerry was an avid trumpet play-er and played with the Valley Concert Band during the Concerts in the Park series, Valley Community Orchestra as well as in Mike Esau's garage band. He also had a love of early music and for many years played a yearly Christmas concert with Woodes so Wilde and recently connected with the Sacramento Recorder Society. He was in his element when playing and conducting.

He enjoyed boating and being an active member of the Stockton Sailing Club and was recently elected Captain of the Port. Jerry spent may happy hours tink-ering on his sailboat, The Black Note and cruising the Delta and up and down the coast of California. He would often crew on other boats just to be out on the water.

Jerry umpired softball for many years for Manteca Parks and Rec, Manteca Youth softball, ASA and High School softball and loved his time on the field. He used humor to communicate with the players, coaches and parents. He had the opportunity to umpire a number of national tournaments.

Since retiring, Jerry and his wife, Claudia enjoyed traveling internationally, as well as frequent trips to visit their daughters in Philadelphia and San Diego. They also appreciated their annual trips to Catalina and Yosemite where Jerry enjoyed the tours and ranger walks. They continued to see Best of Broadway shows in San Francisco as they had for the past 40 years. This is part of Jerry’s obituary. To read the whole thing go to: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/neptune-society-northern-california/ and search for Jerry by name.

Jerry will be deeply missed by all of the friends he played music with at the Sacramento Recorder Society. As a cheerful and indefatigable conductor he led the Soci-ety on numerous occasions in preparation for musical events, and we could not have asked for a more patient and knowledgeable leader. At our Winter Party just this past Saturday he was the picture of conviviality, enjoying every minute of the pieces he conducted, and enthusiasti-cally applauding every group that performed. It is hard for me to imagine the recorder society without Jerry’s pres-ence. For years, Jerry and I (see below) played early mu-sic together: Renaissance music at ballet guild galas, Ba-roque chamber music at house concerts, jazz at informal rehearsals and at society parties. I will miss my friend and playing partner.

-Mark Schiffer

Jerry was one of my go-to guys whenever I con-ducted SRS- I could throw anything at him and he was able to play it, or at least gave it a real effort with enthusiasm and a smile. He filled in on contrabass whenever it was needed, both at SRS and at Headlands (see photo at left), even though each time was his “first time”. Since he was a school band director he could relate to my stories about baton twirling, and we always had a lot of laughs over that. We both had experi-ence in the trenches of marching band and could talk shop and joke forever if not for the end of the coffee break. I’m deeply saddened by his sudden passing and will really miss him at re-corder events. -Glen Shannon

Every month Jerry drove the fifty miles from Stockton to the Friends Meet-ing House to meet and play recorder. When we had an early-music specialist as conductor, Jerry’s ability to change instru-ments at a moment’s notice, and his co-gent comments on the music and compos-ers indicated his extensive studies at the UOP Conservatory of Music and his expe-rience playing with the Stockton and Lodi Symphonies. When he was conducting SRS, his patience and ability to put up with our shenanigans refer to skills he learned from teaching the kids of Manteca for three and a half decades. His good-naturedness and his professionalism were qualities we ad-mired. Huzzah! -Robert Foster

Those we Love, remain with us,

For Love itself lives on. Cherished memories never

fade, because one loved is gone. Those we Love can never

be, More than a thought

apart, for as long

as there’s a memory, they live on in our heart.

About the Sacramento Recorder About the Sacramento Recorder About the Sacramento Recorder About the Sacramento Recorder SocietySocietySocietySociety

The Sacramento Recorder Society, founded in 1982, is a non-profit, tax-

exempt organization. It is a chapter of the American Recorder Society and an affiliate of the San Francisco Early Music Society. We welcome recorder players of all ages and abilities as well as players of other ear-ly music instruments such as lutes, viols, sackbuts, shawms, curtals, krummhorns, and percussion. Beginners are urged to study privately and learn fingerings and be-come comfortable reading music before joining the recorder orchestra. We meet monthly from September through June, from 6:45pm to 9:30pm on the first Tuesday of each month, at the Friends Meeting House, 890 57th Street, between J St. and H St. Most of our meet-ings are conducted by a professional early music specialist who teaches recorder tech-nique and relevant music history and theory while exploring music of many eras. Many of our members also play in smaller groups in members’ homes during the rest of the month.
