OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD

How will we do this Lent? You know the traditional ways ofpenance: prayer, fasting and caring for the poor. Lots ofpeople give up particular foods or beverages for Lent. Ofcourse, if we go around for forty days of Lent moaning and

groaning to everyone about how hard it is to go without whateverwe are giving up, a good deal of the spiritual value of fasting will belost. We give up particular food to learn, to know what it is to gowithout, to deny ourselves the comfort we find in these foods andto ponder what other more valuable sources of comfort there mightbe in things that truly nourish us. We might give up alcohol to gaina more sober perspective on our lives and how we handle thethings that stress us and to discover what we are truly thirsty for.And you might think of taking money that you save by not buyingthem and setting that aside for the poor. Another thing we mightgive up for Lent is something very precious to us all: our time. Somany demands are made on our time and most of us are muchbusier than we probably want to be. Suppose I “gave up” some ofmy time this Lent to pray every day, to look around me and see whoneeds my help, to see how I might give some of my time to others,or just to ponder how I might give more of my time to those whoare closest to me: my own family.

Lent means spring time that means spring cleaning. Onething we might all do this Lent is clean out our hearts and throwinto the trash what we don’t need in our lives: bad habits, grudges, resentments and bitterness. Too many of us store up these thingsnot deserving of taking up room in a Christian heart. A welcomesign of springtime is the return of birds and their song in the trees. This Lent, might you and I consider how we cage one another, locking up others in our bias, our prejudice, our hard feelings? Isthere someone in my life, even more than one person, whoserelationship I’ve restricted because I’m unwilling to forgive, to letgo, to forget, to let bygones be bygone, to reconcile, to make peace?Lent might be just the time to set free what we’ve locked up - andsometimes, it’s our own selves we’ve caged and need to free.

But none of what I’ve suggested will come to pass unlesswe make time for prayer. Lent is a time to renew my relationshipwith God and the best way is through prayer. Will I make time eachday even to sit in the silence with Jesus, quietly, by a friend’s side?If we’re going to fast this Lent, we’ll need time in prayer to learnhow to fill the emptiness our fasting creates. If we’re going to servethe poor, we’ll need to pray to recognize who needs our help athome, at work, at school and away. Our Lenten practices aren’tmeant just to take things away but also to help us find new gifts tocarry us to Easter, new treasures to store in our hearts, like peaceof mind, a new prayer life, a greater love for serving those in needand a closer relationship with Jesus. My treasure chest here isempty because I don’t know yet how the season ahead might fill it.

Lent began last week. So listen carefully to this last pieceof advice: on Wednesday, you got your ASH in church. It was thebest way to start this holy season. And after that, to return hereevery Sunday in Lent to hear the Lord’s Word, to pray for a Lentfilled with grace and peace; and to be nourished with the Bread andCup of Communion, the fruit of the love of Jesus laid down for us onthe Cross that we might have life and have it to the full.

Father LaMorte

CARDINAL’S ANNUAL STEWARDSHIPAPPEAL “SHARING GOD’S GIFTS” Asstewards and disciples of Christ, werecognize that all the goods and riches in

our life are gifts from God. Strengthened by the Eucharist, werespond to God’s generosity in our lives with gratitude byusing and sharing our gifts in service of others. Please shareyour gifts and make a gift to the Cardinal’s Annual StewardshipAppeal. Support the educational, charitable, and pastoralworks of our archdiocese that help so many among us. This isa $20 million initiative. We are already off to a good start. Sofar, 66 donors have pledged $23,726 toward our goal of$92,000. We can surely do this if you make your pledge today.Next Sunday, Father will lead all of us in Commitment Sunday.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS Today at 5:30Mass, our catechumen for full initiation, Jay Wood willparticipate in the PARISH SENDING OF A CATECHUMEN FOR THE RITE OF

ELECTION. This will take place at St. Patrick’s Cathedral withCardinal Dolan. But it is with the parish community that thepreliminary judgement is made concerning his state offormation and progress. Please pray for Jay and the othercandidates for confirmation, Dawn Colon and Joe Mackey astheir journey continues. On the second Sunday of Lent, sincethey are already among the baptized, they will participate inthe celebration of the penitential rite. This is especiallymeaningful for those who will approach the sacrament ofpenance for the first time because they are going to hear thecomforting message of pardon for sins, for which they willpraise the Father’s mercy. Then, on the third, fourth and fifthSundays of Lent, Jay, now part of “the Elect,” will participate inthe SCRUTINIES. These are solemnly celebrated after the homilyand are reinforced by an exorcism. These are rites for self-searching and repentance. They have a spiritual purpose. They are meant to uncover, then heal all that is weak, defectiveor sinful in the hearts of the elect; to bring out, thenstrengthen all that is upright and good. The scrutinies arecelebrated in order to deliver the elect from the power of sinand Satan, to protect them against temptation, and to givethem strength in Christ who is the Way, the Truth and the Life.

THE APOSTLES’ CREED Today at Mass, we willbegin using the Apostles’ Creed instead of theNicene Creed. The church especially

recommends its use for Lent and Easter Time. Why? Becausethe words of this ancient Creed have been used for centuriesas the basis of our baptismal promises, and the seasons of Lentand Easter put a strong focus on baptism. During Lent weprepare those who will be baptized at Easter while readyingourselves to renew our own baptismal promises. As we recitethe Apostles’ Creed, it will stir up in our hearts ourcommitment to Christ which was first made at our ownbaptisms and prepare us to renew our promises at Easter.

ESTATE PLANNING On Sunday, April 2 at 1:30 PM, attorneyCourtney Boniface of CANE, BONIFACE AND MEYERS in Nyack willconduct a Will Seminar in the OLV Room. More info to come.

BLESSING OF SAINT JOSEPH TABLE will take place on Saturday, March18 at 9:00 Mass. This custom began as a mealto which all, particularly the poor, were welcomed without cost to thank and honor St. Joseph for a favor granted. It combined three Lenten disciplines of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. The table featured meatless dishes, breads, pastries and a collection was taken for the poor. Join us for Mass and a reception afterwards in the narthex. Onelegend says that zeppole are Neopolitan type cream puffs filled with custard. The name is a play on S. Giuseppe. Sfingiare Sicilian donuts filled with cannoli cream. At this Mass, we will naturallyhonor Saint Patrick, too, the patronalfeast of the archdiocese with the addition of homemade Irish soda bread.

DISPENSATION FOR ST. PATRICK’S DAY Fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, as well as abstinence from meat on Fridays areimportant Lenten obligations for every Catholic bound by age and health. This year, the Solemnity of St. Patrick, patron saint of ourarchdiocese falls on a Friday in Lent. Cardinal Dolan has decided to dispense parishioners from abstaining from meat on this specialfeast day.

ROCKLAND COUNTY AOH 55th ANNUAL ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE steps off from the south parking lot of the PfizerCorporation on Middletown Road on March 19 at 1:30 PM. Naturally, St. GregoryBarbarigo Regional School will be marching. Again last year, we won the Timmy John O’Riordan Memorial trophyfor the best large Catholic grade school. Come out to march with us – and wear your parish colors.
