263 Richard III and the Battle of Bosworth: Mike Ingram

Written by Mike Ingram from the Battlefields Trust and with a foreword by our Chairman, Phil Stone, this new study tells the story of two very different men, Richard III and Henry Tudor and how they met in battle on 22 August 1485 at Bosworth Field. The book, using contemporary sources, examines their early lives, the many plots against Richard and the involvement of Henry’s mother, Margaret Beaufort. It also offers a new explanation for Richard’s execution of William Hastings. Despite recent portrayals as the archetypal fence-sitters, the book also shows that the powerful Stanley family had a long standing feud with Richard and were not only complicit in the plots against him in the months before the battle, but probably laid the trap that ultimately led to his death on the battlefield. 258 Richard III: Fact and Fiction Matthew Lewis

Dissecting a real Richard III from the fictional versions that have taken hold is made difficult by the inability to discern motives in many instances, leaving a wide gap for interpretation that can be favourable or damning in varying degrees. It is the facts that will act as the scalpel to begin the operation of finding a truth obscured by fiction. Richard III may have been a monster, a saint, or just a man trying to survive, but any view of him should be based in the realities of his life, not the myths built on rumour and theatre. How much of what we think we know about England's most controversial monarch will remain when the facts are sifted from the fictions? . Paperback

The Calais Letter Book Of William Lord Hastings And Late Mediaeval Crisis Diplomacy, 1477

Ed. and Introduced by Edward L. Meek, 2018

The letter book of the title is a severely damaged manuscript that is now housed in the Huntingdon Library, California. It is a record of William Lord Hastings’s French correspondence between April and September 1477, a crucial period in England’s relations with the continent in the aftermath of Charles the Bold’s death. The Editor has provided both a transcription and translation as well as a detailed introduction interpreting the significance of the letters.
