UNIVERSITY RECORD .PUBLISHED UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE UNIVERSITY GLEE CLUB .

COLLEGE YEAR 1864-65 .

THE COLLEGE YEAR of 1864—65 has been a nunusually prosperous one to the University, and a tno time for many years has there been so muc hcollege and class feeling and so many excellent en-terprises carried through . THE GLEE CLUB, whic hwas organized three years ago, and which ha salready won for itself honourable laurels, has given ,during this college year, four concerts, viz . :—a tChelten Hills, Montgomery county, Pa ., on Wed-nesday, January 25th ; at the Soldiers' Readin gRoom, on February 22d ; at Bridgeton, Cumberlan dcounty, N . J ., on March 28th, for the benefit o fthe Ladies Soldiers' Relief Association of tha tplace ; and at the Hall of the University, on Mon -day, May 15th, for the publishing fund of th eClub .

At the concert last year (May 23d), over tw ohundred dollars was realized for the Central Fair .The Club intend publishing, next autumn, a Gle eBook of the University, especially for UniversitySongs, but which will also contain the old favourite sof all colleges, and many of the beautiful studen tsongs of the German Universities . It is proposedto get this book up by subscription at $1 50 a copy ,the money to be paid on receipt of the book ; andit is hoped that the Alumni, Graduates, and al lfriends of the University, as well as the lovers o fcollege music generally, will assist this enterprise .The names and residences of subscribers, and th enumber of copies desired, may be sent in, unti lSeptember, to John C . Sims, Jr ., Secretary of th eClub, Cape Island, N . J ., or handed in to an ymember of the Club .

THE CLASS OF SIXTY-FIVE has been the mos tenergetic class which has graduated for years . Toit mainly is due the present class spirit of the Col-lege and the flourishing condition of all the Socie-ties . Altogether it has numbered sixty members ,but the war and other causes have called off s omany that it will graduate but twenty-four . Twoof its number have been laid under the sod :William Wood Montgomery and John Cox Biddle ,young men of great ability and promise, and greatl yendeared to their classmates . During the year th eangel of death has borne away to another and abetter world two men intimately connected wit hthe University : Benjamin Gerhard, Esq ., for manyyears a Trustee, and the Right Reverend Bisho pDe Laney, formerly Provost. Mr. Gerhardlaboured faithfully for the good of the Institutio nwhich in youth had educated him, and unlike manyof the Board, he sent his sons to it, and not toother colleges . The gentleman elected to fill th evacancy has never had the slightest connection wit hthe University . The Board of Trustees seem en-tirely opposed to electing an alumnus or graduate ,who would naturally take an interest in his Alm aMater ; they appear to desire rather to pay a com-pliment to some distinguished citizen . Many ofour finest citizens, who are graduates, are passe dover, and his Honour the Mayor of the city i sselected .

CRICKET MATCHES innumerable have taken plac eduring the year . Four between the UniversityEleven and the Second Eleven of the Youn gAmerica Cricket Club, the first two in the autumn ,when the latter were the victors ; the last two thi sspring, in which the University Eleven were vic-torious respectively by sixty odd runs in one, an dby four wickets in the other match . Last autum nthe University Eleven were also beaten by theSecond Eleven of the Philadelphia Cricket Club ;but this defeat was the result of accident—th eabsence of some of the University's best men .The Fresh . Eleven whipped the Soph . Eleven ,and were whipped by six of the Junior Eleven .The Fresh. were also victors in a match with th eSecond Eleven of the Eureka Cricket Club of Ger-mantown by one hundred and sixteen runs . TheBase Ball Club, which was in a flourishing condi-tion last year, has fallen through .

Some of the

men now in college ought to take it up again ; theywill find all the bats, bases, &c ., ready for them .THE UNIVERSITY LIGHT ARTILLERY COMPANY I Sin a prosperous condition . The prize for fencin gwas awarded to Clement C . Dickey, of '66 . OnApril d, when the President's remains wer epassing through the city, and when the Compan yheld the post of honour—firing the minute guns —a most deplorable accident occurred, which threwa gloom over the whole University . By the pre -mature discharge of one of the pieces, Archibal dMontgomery and Thomas Lyman, both of '67 ,were severely injured . Mr. Montgomery's life ,for a time, was despaired of; but, by carefu l nurs-ing and a good constitution, it has been spared .Mr. Lyman's injuries were less serious, and hi srecovery, though tedious, is certain . Sergean tMiles called out a warning, which probably save dboth from instant death . No blame attaches to an ymember of the Company .

THE BACCALAUREATE SERMON before the graduat -ing class was preached by Rev . Phillips Brooks, onSunday evening, May 28th . The opening service swere conducted by the Provost and Rev . Dr . Morton .The Hall of the University was crowded, and th eoccasion was an eminent success . The service of theEpiscopal Church was used, and the Glee Club acte das choir . The sermon from Matthew vi . 23 : "If,therefore, the light that is in thee be darkness, ho wgreat is that darkness," was in Mr . Brooks' peculiarl yclear and forcible style, abounding with illustratio nand deep thought, and was listened to with grea tattention . The Senior Class formed in a body ,and, preceded by the clergy, took their seats upo nthe stage . We again thank Mr . Brooks for hi sable discourse, which contributed so much to renderthe closing celebration of the class of '65 a grea tsuccess . The religious meeting which was starte dlast fall at the advice of the Provost, has been, an dis still held for half an hour every Wednesday ,immediately after third hour . These meetingshave been well attended throughout, and have bee naddressed by the Provost, Rev. Messrs . Wylie ,Goddard, Newton, Crowell, Calkins, and others .The Class Day of Sixty-five made such an impres -sion that no detailed account is necessary . Asplendid audience—the Hall gaily festooned wit hflags and flowers—college music by Birgfeld—th eHistory by Mr . McDonald—the Oration by Mr .Hodge—the Poem by Mr . Newton—the WoodenSpoon Presentation to Mr . Lewis by Mr . Mont-gomery—the farewell song of the class—the clas sand college colours—the bouquets presented to th eyoung ladies—all these are points not to be soo nforgotten, and make it the most splendid celebratio nwhich the University has ever known . "Esto per-petua." The Class Supper came off on the sam eevening at Augustine's . Dr. Goodwin was present .The following were the toasts given on the occa-sion :--"The Provost and the Faculty of Arts ;""Our Alma Mater ;" "The Class of Sixty-five ;""The Philomathean Society ;" "The Zelosophi cSociety ;" "The Delta Phi Fraternity ;" "TheZeta Psi Fraternity ;" "The Phi Kappa Sigm aFraternity ;" "The Delta Psi Fraternity ;" "TheGlee Club ;"The Absent Members of th eClass." Mr. Reed read the Class Prophecy, whic hwas full of witty sallies, and in all respects capital .At the commencement of the Medical Departmen tin March, a class of nearly one hundred and twent ygraduated . And now a few words to graduate sabout their Alma Mater . While other college sreceive thousands of dollars from their sons, th eUniversity receives nothing ; and this although it sgraduates are richer than those of any other colleg ein the Union, except Harvard and Columbia .Why cannot some of our influential graduates movein this matter, and call a meeting next September ,to endow the University professorships, and to en -large the Library? Such a call, we are sure, woul dmeet with a liberal response .

The year of '65! How momentous in thehistory of our country! The year that sees theGreat Rebellion crushed out forever !

Brothers of '65 : Our class is baptized with th ename of this year of Peace! It is stamped upo nour very foreheads! Let us go forth to the wor kof life, then, in the dawning glory of thos eresplendent beams with which the Angel of Peaceis lighting up our late tempest-tost land!!
