According to the latest U.S. governmentstatistics, more than 23 million Ameri-cans, including 6.5 million children, livemore than a mile away from a supermar-ket. Whether your community is consid-ered a “food desert” or not, starting acommunity garden is a great way to getactive, improve health, promote nutritioneducation, and nurture great neighborrelations.

Here are some tips to get started on yourgarden:

• Talk to neighbors to see if there is wideenough interest and to find partners tohelp you organize.

• Create task-based committees andassign active, responsible communitymembers to lead them.

• Find a level, sunny site for your gardenwith convenient water access. A test candetermine if your soil has the propernutrients and is free of heavy metals. Besure you have a written agreement withthe landowner.

• Approach local businesses for supplydonations. Hardware stores and lumbersuppliers are a great place to start.

• Use a democratic process to makeimportant decisions, such as what gar-dening tasks will happen cooperatively,how much member dues will be and howoften they will be collected, and whetherthe garden will be organic.

• Plan the garden, mapping out plots.Shared spaces should include a tool shed,a water fountain, a shady area for garden-ers to relax and a composting area.

• Create a set of rules and have all gar-deners sign an agreement to follow them.

• Post flyers, talk to your children’s teach-ers and principal, and inform the localpress of what you’re doing.

• Empower gardeners and the greatercommunity with knowledge. Plan work-shops focused on gardening techniques,nutrition, and cooking. Get childreninvolved with programming gearedspecifically to younger audiences.

You can get inspired by what others arealready doing. For example, the Interna-tional Rescue Committee (IRC), a globalhumanitarian organization, is helpingrefugees become self-sufficient and con-tribute to their new home in the UnitedStates through community gardening,nutrition education and small businessfarming.

With training, tools and land provided bythe IRC’s New Roots program, refugeesare sharing their agricultural skills andproducing affordable, locally grown veg-etables and fruit for their families andneighbors.

“Community gardens are a win-win situa-tion, creating trust and dialogue amonglocal residents and establishing a healthi-er, localized food system that benefitseveryone,” says Ellee Igoe, the IRC’s tech-nical advisor for U.S. food and agricultureprograms.
