PRICE RANGENEWS & VIEWSStoryline Project Explores “Transit” Through Canoes, Bikes, and Buses

For the fifth year in a row, Piedmont Council for the Arts (PCA) will col-laborate with The Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative, Charlottesville Parks & Recreation, the Thomas Jefferson Cen-ter For the Protection of Free Speech, SiteWorks, Charlottesville Area Transit, Neighborhood Development Services, and Community Bikes on the 2013 Storyline Project, a hands-on project for local youth.

The Storyline Project will take place on July 8-11. The Storyline Project guides rising 4th-6th graders from the Charlottesville Parks & Rec summer camps through three days of unique expeditions that culminate in the cre-ation of a mural on the fourth day. This year’s theme is “Transit,” utilizing boats, bikes, and buses.

Working directly with local artists, architects, poets, writers, historians, and storytellers, Charlottesville Parks

& Rec campers will combine their own observations with information from guest speakers to construct creative responses.

On Monday, July 8, campers will take canoes onto the James River and learn about its role in transit. On Tuesday, July 9, they will ride a fleet of bicycles through the streets of Charlottesville while learning about the history of local neighborhoods. On Wednesday, July 10, campers will ride a city bus along a special route while participating in poetry activities with a local artist.

On Thursday, July 11, campers’ sketches will coalesce with the creation of a mural on the Community Chalk-board on the Downtown Mall. The public is invited to observe the mural creation from 10:00am to 12:00pm and celebrate the Storyline Project.

A exhibition of art and photographs from Storyline 2013 will take place at the CitySpace Gallery (100 5th Street NE) in August with an opening recep-tion on Friday, August 2 from 5:30-7:00pm. ■

Hamlet: My father—methinks I see my father.Horatio: Where, my Lord?

Hamlet: In my mind’s eye, Horatio.—Hamlet, Act 1, Scene 2

Composer and conductor Larry Alan Smith can see it in his mind’s eye: the golf and the tennis cours-es, the wedding and ban-quet facilities, the nature trail walks and the hand-some villa-style condos on the 11,000 mountain-side acres of Nelson

County’s Wintergreen Resort. And right in the middle of it all, a festival. The 2013 Wintergreen Summer Music Festival and Academy, 28 days of “image, imagery, and imagination in the arts,” comes to the mountain July 8 through August 4, with more than 200 events for the ear and eye and the heart, including orchestral and cham-ber music concerts, hikes and semi-nars, recitals and garden parties, and even a little Shakespeare.

Hamlet may have been seeing a ghost, but the phrase he made famous is an apt description for the experi-ence of listening closely to a musical composition. As festival director Smith explains, “the whole idea is that inside one’s head you have an image of things. If a composer says the title is some-thing very evocative, do they then image something in their own head as they’re listening? Or if it’s just a plain old title and there’s no indication, do people bring their own imagination to what they’re hearing?” If they don’t already, they will at Wintergreen, where Smith’s carefully designed programs and char-acteristically comprehensive program notes will draw intellectual connections

and suggest visual associations for both novices and aficionados alike.

The festival’s opening concert by the Wintergreen Festival Orchestra on July 10 will start off, as it does each year, with a composition most Americans first learned to visualize in elementary school, the Star-Spangled Banner. It will continue with an eclec-

tic mix of contemporary and early 20th century works.

“Two of our core composers will be with us that night,” Smith says: “Samuel Zyman, who’s from Mexico, and Michael White, who’s very popu-lar with his morning seminars. Sam’s piece is called Musica para Cinco (2009). You can definitely hear his Mexican heritage in the music, in its exciting rhythm.” White is a lecturer, writer, and a member of the gradu-ate faculty at the Julliard School who has described the life and music of Mozart as his “true obsession” and as his “first and last love.” He’ll lead ten of the festival’s Morning Semi-nars—informal affairs interrupted by coffee breaks—focusing on some of the composers and compositions included in this year’s festival. Smith programmed White’s haunting So-nata in One Movement for Cello and Piano (2011) after hearing a performance in New York.

Sinfonia da camera in B-flat Major, Op. 8 (1901) is a romantic work featur-ing the piano by the Italian-German composer Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari. Smith calls it “very evocative of im-ages, which is why I put it on the first night.” Rounding out the program will be Josef Suk’s beautiful Elegy, Op. 23 (1902), added as a tribute to a festival board member for whom it’s a favorite. Reservations for the Opening Night Concert and the preceding reception must be made by July 8.

Four more orchestra programs will follow, each to be played twice, on Sat-urdays at 6:00 p.m. and Sundays at 3:00 p.m. starting July 13 and continuing through August 4. Classics 1 will fea-ture Aaron Copland’s Music for Movies (1925-48) , Mozart’s Concerto for Flute and Harp in C Major, K. 299/297c (1778), and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 in F Major Op. 68 (1807-08) –

“Pastorale.” The Mozart concerto is “one of the great masterpieces in our repertoire,” says flautist Lance Suzuki, a soloist in the piece along with the New York Philharmonic’s Principal Harpist, Nancy Allen. “The middle An-dante movement would most certainly be on my ‘desert island’ short list.”

So called programmatic works, like Beethoven’s Sixth, lend themselves to the imaginative visualization that is this year’s festival theme. Originally titled “Pastoral Symphony or Recollec-tion of the Life in the Countryside,” it is Beethoven’s paean to nature, and its five movements have subtitles like “Scene at the creek” (the andante), and “Pastoral Song – Feelings of joy and gratitude after the Storm” (the concluding allegretto). Attentive lis-teners will hear the storm, the trickling brook, the trill of birds, and other sounds of the natural world.

Antonio Vivaldi’s, Le quattro stag-ioni, Op. 8, Nos. 1-4 (1723), popularly known as The Four Seasons, is another well-known programmatic work. Each of its four movements, titled “Spring,” “Summer,” “Autumn” and “Winter,” are accompanied by four sonnets thought to have been written by the composer himself, full of images like “the barking dog” and “the drunkard,” and “the tears of the peasant boy” that may be heard in the music.

Wintergreen Festival Orchestra con-certmaster and violinist Christopher Pulgram suggested the Vivaldi work, and will be its featured soloist. “I’m very excited about it,” Pulgram says.

“When Larry told me that this summer was going to be about imagery and music, I couldn’t help but think that there are very few pieces that would have so much to do with imagery.” The Four Seasons will be part of the Classics IV program on August 3 and 4, along with a divertimento by Mozart, a string symphony by Felix Mendelssohn, and Rocking Chair Serenade (2013), a world premiere by Robert Carl.

Suzuki and Pulgram are among the 20 or so Wintergreen Festival Orchestra members who will teach thirty-seven students from 19 states and Canada at the festival’s music academy this summer.

“What I love about Wintergreen is the dedication of the musicians, staff, and volunteers alike,” says Suzuki, a freelance musician based in New York

RECity who plays “Carnegie Hall, obscure

downtown spaces, and everything in between,” and is returning for his third summer. “This festival really is a com-munity affair, and it’s great seeing so many passionate advocates of the arts in action led by our fearless leader, Larry Alan Smith. The hospitality at Winter-green is wonderful, and my hosts have become like a second family to me. I’m sure that many of my colleagues feel similarly. These are all conditions that lead to great music making.”

Suzuki is especially looking forward to working with composer-in-resi-dence, Samuel Zyman, and perform-ing his Flute Sonata in the second of the festival’s two Thrilling Thursday concerts on July 18th. “This piece has a lot of fire and excitement,” he says, “and should be especially fun to play. I’m also looking forward to hearing my friend and colleague, James Austin Smith, play the Strauss oboe concerto this summer” (Classics III, July 27 and 28). He’s such a beautiful player and this concert is definitely a must-see.”

A member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra for two decades, Pulgram has played at Wintergreen “at least a dozen years,” long enough to call many in the audience friends. “I see quite a variety of people there,” he says. “At the end of the summer they say ‘We’re so sad to see you leaving.’”

Many of the faithful festivalgoers Pulgram is talking about have bought

homes in Nelson County, either at the resort itself or in the valley. Tim Merrick has been selling homes in the area since back in early 70s, back when “there was nothing” around—not even the roads and the water and sewer systems, much less “the ski slopes and golf courses condos and restaurants and all that stuff” that attract so many second-home owners today.

“People in the valley buy here to be near the resort facilities on a year ‘round basis,” Merrick says, as well as to be in “striking distance” of Charlot-tesville, only about 30 minutes away. Merrick estimates that 85 percent of homes at the resort are second homes, while perhaps 10 percent are perma-nent and another 5 percent are used seasonally. “In the valley, take that same statistic and flip it.” Perhaps eighty percent of homeowners in the valley live there year ‘round.

“Nelson County and Wintergreen attract many buyers because of the natural beauty and amenities they offer,” says Nellysford REALTOR® Chastity Morgan. “There is something for everyone, whether it is hiking along the Appalachian Trail, fishing in the rivers and streams, a day of golfing or skiing, or just enjoying the beauty of the area ... the list goes on and on. Our local wineries, breweries and res-taurants have become a great draw for the county.”

Music and visual arts loving home-owners in the area this year will have full calendars again this festival sea-

son. The festival’s one-hour Sunday morning Coffee Concerts are mod-eled after the Sunday morning per-formances popular in Europe. Coffee will be served, and chamber music will be heard. Children are welcome at all of festival performances, and will be served their own (caffeine-free!) drinks at the Coffee Concerts.

Wild Wednesdays will present jazz from The Lenny Marcus Trio on July 17, and Elizabethan style improvisa-tion from the Improvised Shakespeare Company on July 24. “Oboists unite!” is the rallying cry for the first Thrill-ing Thursdays program on July 11, and two players of the double-reeded woodwind join a pianist for trio music from the 18th and 20th centuries.

If music can conjure visual images, art can match music. Since 2010, Lyn

Warren’s Les Yeux du Monde gallery outside of Charlottesville has collabo-rated with the festival, fitting exhibi-tions to its musical explorations. “This year I have three shows that relate to the theme of In My Mind’s Eye,” War-ren says. “Two photographers, Janice Levy and Patricia McClung until July 16, and after that a painter, Isabelle Abbot.” Exhibitions at Les Yeux du Monde are open to the public by ap-pointment only. Also in conjunction with the festival, the Chroma Projects gallery on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall will host three exhibitions run-ning from Friday, July 5 through Sat-urday, August 24.

Art lovers will have five chances to see French playwright Yasmina Reza’s internationally acclaimed comedy, Art, July 30-August 3. Winner of the 1998 Tony Award for best play, Art concerns the disastrous effect on three friends, Serge, Marc and Yvan, when Serge pur-chases an expensive, all-white work of abstract art. As the three men debate the value of the painting, larger issues come to the fore, and a long-standing friendship is nearly ended. There will be a wine reception following the play’s festival premiere on Tuesday, July 30, and discussion will follow the July 3 and August 2 matinee performances.

“A lot of people I know who come to Wintergreen don’t know about the festival, and don’t know about the Blue Ridge, and are mesmerized by all the things there are to do in the area,” Smith says. “One thing that I hear people say all the time is ‘a bunch of summers we went to blank’—and it’s some famous music festival somewhere out in the west or the Northeast—“and we never had any idea that this is right here. That’s something I really like hearing, because they know that we’re doing really good stuff.”

“Where else in this part of the coun-try,” as Tim Merrick puts it, “can you go and hear a symphony orchestra and have a glass of Merlot?” ■

Tips For Saving for a Down Payment

By Joanne DiMaggio

One of the biggest hesitations in purchasing a home is coming up with that dread-ed down payment. Here are some valuable tips from lo-

cal experts on how to do just that.

How Much House Can You Afford?Tom Sellman, Senior Loan Officer for C&F Mortgage Corporation, encour-ages homebuyers to first obtain a copy of their credit report and then meet with a lender prior to looking at homes. “The lender can obtain a tri-merge credit report and sit down with the purchaser to discuss the report and any inaccuracies. Credit scores are important in determining qualifica-tions of potentials buyers. The lender can work with the client to help them improve their credit score if it is low.”

Carl Garrett, mortgage originator with SLS Mortgage, said the first thing homeowners should do is figure what size monthly house payment will be comfortable for them and still enable them to meet their other financial goals. “People shouldn’t shy away from taking the time to track their spending, work up a budget, and figure out how their income will handle all the costs of a new home.”

Tammy Wilt, a mortgage consultant and a CAAR affiliate, suggested that renters ask themselves whether they are comfortable to pay more or are they stretched and need to pay less? Those who aren’t renting should de-posit the monthly payment they feel they can afford in the bank and not touch it. After a few months, look at how they are handling their expenses or if they had to withdraw money from their potential mortgage fund.

“If they had to “dip” into the funds, they should rethink what they can af-ford,” she stated. “Once they have an idea on what monthly payment they feel comfortable with, let the mortgage of-ficer know and they can work backwards to figure out a purchase price range.”

How Much Do You Need?Twenty-percent has been touted as the magic number because at this point, you won’t have to purchase Private Mortgage insurance, but Wilt said there are other factors to consider that would enable buyers to come in at a much lower down payment.

“Generally, people who fit the right criteria can purchase a primary resi-dence for no money down up to 3.5 percent for a loan amount of $417,000 or less (in the Charlottesville metro area),” she said.

“The USDA has a loan program that requires no down payment at all for those buying a non-urban property,” Garrett added. “Military veterans and reservists are eligible for another pro-gram that requires no down payment. And there are conventional loan op-tions that only require 3 percent down, and FHA, which only requires 3.5 percent down.”

Getting HelpThere are numerous programs de-signed to help potential homebuyers with their down payments. Wilt sug-gests that the best way to check to see whether you qualify for assistance is to check with Piedmont Housing Au-thority 434-817-2436, as they will have the latest list of available funds, along with any criteria that needs to be met.

Garrett stated that there are several mortgage programs that allow gifts from family, or even close friends, as a source of down payment. “Sellers can’t contribute to the down payment, but they can divert some of their profit from the home sale to help cover the

buyer’s closing costs. Lenders can help with closing costs by giving a “lender credit” in exchange for the borrower accepting a slightly higher interest rate. REALTORS® can contribute to-ward closing costs, also, by crediting a portion of their commission.”

Sellman said another way to get help is to “check with employers for down payment assistance programs.”

How To SaveWhile you can look into high-yield savings or money market accounts to save for a down payment, you also can review your spending habits and see where you can find extra cash. Live like Ebenezer Scrooge. Sell or cancel the things you really can live without. It sounds drastic, but living frugally will speed up your down pay-ment goal.

Garrett warns however, that while you can sell just about any item to come up with down payment money, you have to document the sale very carefully. “I suggest that before you sell an item or liquidate assets, you

call a mortgage professional and ask them about what kind of documenta-tion will be required by the lender.”

While not a popular option among our experts, retirement accounts are another source for down payment help. Garrett cautions about doing this. “I don’t recommend withdrawing money from an IRA or 401k, except as an absolute last resort, because it’s like stealing money from your future self. Your retirement savings need time to grow. Taking a loan from your retire-ment account instead of a withdrawal is a little better, since you will at least be paying yourself interest as you put the money back into the account.”

Buyer Beware!A few last words of advice.

“Do not purchase any items on credit, or large ticket items that may deplete your cash reserves without first checking with your mortgage officer to see how this may impact your new home purchase,” Wilt advises.

She also said not to rely on mislead-ing online mortgage calculators, as they don’t factor in real estate taxes, homeowners insurance and/or mort-gage insurance.

Garrett encourages homebuyers to meet with an experienced mortgage professional for a thorough pre-qual-ification. “Qualifying for a mortgage is tricky these days, with lots of poten-tial pitfalls, so don’t leave it up to some online calculator.”

He also cautioned about “rent to own” agreements. “They can be very difficult to work with when the time comes to complete the purchase, and in my experience they are often a ter-rible deal for the buyer. I suggest you take the rent-to-own agreement to a mortgage professional, and ask him or her what you need to do to be ready to complete the purchase, once the rental period is over.”

Sellman said it’s best to always dis-cuss personal financing objectives with a trusted Financial Advisor. “I highly recommend that purchasers select a local lender that they can meet with face to face. Financing a home is the largest potential purchase in a lifetime and clients need to have a clear un-derstanding of the process, as well as their options.”

Garrett gave a final warning to those sitting on the fence. “The bottom of the market has come and gone. I know you probably heard that a lot when the real estate crash was going on, but home prices are rising again and so are mort-gage interest rates. There is no benefit to waiting any longer, so you should talk to a mortgage professional or REAL-TOR® sooner instead of later.” ■
