Local Real Estate NewsCAAR Hosted Appraisal Insti-tute Green Certification

The Charlottesville Area Association of REALTORS® (CAAR) was excited to host the Appraisal Institute Green Certification course, which is a part of the Valuation of Sustainable Builds Professional Development Program, on Monday, April 18th through Thurs-day, April 21st. Through the efforts of the CAAR Green Fields Project Team, spearheaded by Greg Slater of Nest Re-alty Group, the project team worked with area partners to subsidize the cost of this training through sponsorships to make these sessions possible.

“Charlottesville is a market where green building has taken root,” said Woody Fincham, SRA, Vice President of The Trice Group. “There is a real need for appraisers with this training to help analyze and accurately report the value of green features and high efficiency homes. These classes are the best out there and having Sandra Adomatis, SRA, the foremost expert in sustainable building valuation, was too good of an opportunity to pass up. CAAR did a real service to local real es-tate by helping bring these classes to the region.”

The program sessions were held in the following categories over the four-day period:•IntroductiontoGreenBuildings:

Principles & Concepts•CaseStudiesinAppraisingGreen

Residential Buildings•ResidentialandCommercialValua-

tion of SolarThis program was announced

through CAAR, neighboring REAL-TOR® associations including the Virginia Area Association of REAL-

TORS®, and through the Appraisal In-stitute’s National outreach. Appraisers joined the training locally and as far away as Ohio, Florida, and West Vir-ginia, and along the outlying borders of Virginia.

Participants who completed the four-day program will be placed on the program’s registry. Completion of this program shows potential clients and employers that appraisers have com-pleted education and passed related course exams in this particular special-ized topic.

CAAR would like to thank the fol-lowing program contributing spon-sors: Sigora Solar, PEARL, Stanley Martin Homes, Ryan Homes, Craig Builders, Bramante Homes, Peak Builders, Southern Development Homes, First Heritage Mortgage, Ech-elon Homes, A. Joseph Homes, and Stony Point Build/Design, LLC.

About CAAR – The Charlottesville Area Associa-

tion of REALTORS® serves more than 1,000 real estate professionals and af-filiate members throughout the City of Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson. Widely recognized as the leading voice for real estate in Central Virginia since 1925, CAAR members bring professionalism and high ethical standards to every business transac-tion. The Association advocates for the protection of private property rights and provides tools and technology for members to achieve expertise in serv-ing the needs of customers and clients. The CAAR membership is committed to enriching the region’s neighbor-hoods by engaging in a variety of ed-ucational programs as well as commu-nity service events each year. Co-sponsors include Charlottesville Self Storage at Crozet and Morning Glory Gardeners. Proceeds from this production support SFTPA’s need-based scholarship program.

The Boar’s Head Appoints New Sales Manager

Boar’s Head, an historic hotel in Charlottesville, has named Malinda Brakeman as Sales Manager for its

Richmond corporate, state associations, state government, Tidewater, Hampton Roads, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and the southeast region.

Brakeman will be responsible for building on Boar’s Head’s success. She looks forward to combining her cus-tomer service and event planning skills at Boar’s Head and introducing new groups and organizations to one of the mid-Atlantic’s premier resorts. She is

especially excited to become an active member of VSAE (Virginia Society of Association Executives).

Former Piedmont Casa President Ruth Stone Joins Charlottesville Habitat Staff

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville is pleased to announce the hiring of Ruth Stone as its Chief Advancement Officer. Ruth brings a world of experience and impeccable credentials to the position. Her con-nections in and commitment to the community are equally profound.

For seventeen years, Stone served as the President and Executive Director of Piedmont Court Appointed Special Ad-vocates for Children. Under her leadership, CASA provided care and support to thousands of chil-dren who needed it most.

Stone earned a law degree from the College of William and Mary and a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University, and has served as a legal consultant throughout her career.

“I am incredibly blessed and so very proud to have the opportunity join the Habitat team to do good work with good people,” said Stone. “Our local Habitat is a flagship program that shares my passion to join with individuals and families to strengthen communities together. To get to work with such an innovative, well-managed program is a true honor, and I look for-ward to the many exciting challenges and adventures ahead.”

Stone will begin her role on May 2nd.

“We are through the roof excited to welcome Ruth to the Habitat team,” said Habitat President and CEO Dan Rosensweig. “She has a passion for the mission and an enormous heart for service.” n

Virginia Wine: NOW’S THE TIME

BY KEN WILSON

Make Mine Virginia Wine goes the slogan, but it’s just

a slogan, right? Just some marketer’s wishful thinking

about what a discerning drinker would order? The lo-

cal vino is still a poor cousin to the West Coast prod-

uct, not to mention what Europe’s been making for

centuries – isn’t that so?

Well not according to Wine Enthusiast, which ranked the Commonwealth as one of the top 10 wine travel destina-tions in the world in 2012. Not accord-ing to Bloomberg News, which in 2015 named Virginia as one of the “next big wine regions.” And not according to The New York Times, Food & Wine, Southern Living, Bon Appétit, and a host of other discriminating national and interna-tional rags too long for a simple, sober sentence, which have lauded our wines and touted our beautiful wineries.

Everyone knows that Thomas Jef-ferson tried and failed to produce a drinkable wine here, but what Jeffer-son couldn’t do Gabriele Rausse (us-ing TJ’s own grape varieties) and many other vintners have been perfecting for awhile now. “Million dollar nose” wine critic Robert Parker’s magazine The Wine Advocate reviewed Virginia wines last year and gave almost 60 of them a score of 90 or greater.

Nowadays the Commonwealth is the nation’s fifth largest wine grape producer, with 386 vineyards in 2015 encompassing over 3,446 acres. With 254 wineries, it’s also fifth in the num-ber of wineries. A 2012 economic im-pact study found that the Virginia wine industry employs more than 4,700 people and contributes almost $750 million a year to the Virginia economy.

The region that frustrated Jefferson is now designated the Monticello AVA, one of six American Viticultural Areas in Virginia. Comprising most of Al-bemarle, Greene, Orange, and Nelson counties, the area is blessed with fertile, granite-based clay soil and a growing season of over 200 days. Some 30 variet-ies of grapes flourish here, and Virginia winemakers are especially successful at making Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Vidal Blanc and Viognier.

Another grape that’s coming into its own locally is Petit Manseng, according to Michael Davis of the Wine Guild of Charlottesville, a year-old club, open to the public, which sells wine and puts on dinners centered on wine regions around the world. “A lot of our mem-bers are Virginia winemakers, and they are excited about it. It’s a grape that is usually grown with success in the Ju-rançon area in southern France. Other regions have trouble with it because it is extremely acidic, but it works really well in the weather here – it’s tough, so it weathers the storms and the humid-ity. The fact that we have a really hot climate in the summertime and early fall makes the grape ripen more than it will in other climates, so that sugar balances the acidity. Because they have such high acidity, Petit Mangsengs tend to be done well as dessert wines.”

Not only are Petit Mangsengs are catching on, but Virginia wine sales in general have increased by 26 percent since fiscal year 2010, and almost two percent in 2015, reaching a record lev-el of 524,000 cases of wine, or over 6.5 million bottles last year. Sales at win-eries themselves grew by 6.3 percent in 2015, growth which the governor’s of-fice attributed to an increase of visitors and tourists to state wineries and wine events. Virginia wineries have become popular destinations for connoisseurs and curiosity seekers alike, attracting more than 1.6 million tourists in 2014, not just to sample wine, but to social-ize and hear good music. Take a look at what’s happening soon.

Albemarle County Blenheim Vineyards was estab-

lished in 2000 by local rock ‘n roll roy-alty Dave Matthews on land where Jef-ferson and his bride Martha once took shelter from a snowstorm. Matthews and master craftsman William Johnson designed the winery building to have minimal impact on the environment.

Friday, May 6 through Sunday, May 8 is Dave Matthews Band concert week-end at Blenheim, as the band plays the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, and Blenheim celebrates with food from Cote Rotie, Blue Ridge Pizza Co., JM Stock Provisions, and Two Broth-ers Southwestern Grill. Darcy Dawn & Company will play on Sunday after-noon from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

First Colony Winery boasts a 5,000 square-foot Tasting Room and Gift Shop, plus indoor and outdoor seating areas for picnics, group tast-ings and private parties. This season’s Sunday Sounds series kicks off out on the patio on Sunday, May 15 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. with Midlife Crisis Band playing country and folk numbers,

plus oldies and originals. The series continues on Sunday, May 29 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. with local songwrit-er Jason Burke. Singer songwriter John Kelly plays on Sunday, June 12 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday Sounds per-formances have no cover charge.

Chef Terre Sisson of Charlottesville Wine & Culinary will teach classes on how to prepare and enjoy a three-course meal on Sunday, May 22 and Sunday, June 12 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Each meal will be paired with First Col-ony wines. Tickets are $68.00/person, and must be reserved in advance.

The folks at Jefferson Vineyards are making wine on land first planted by Jefferson’s own viticulturist, Philip Mazzei, and in a winery designed in the Palladian architectural style Jeffer-son loved and used for the Rotunda at the University Of Virginia. Richmond reggae singer Mighty Joshua comes to Jefferson on May 7 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Admission is free. Parking is $3 and carpooling is encouraged. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be held on Sunday, May 8.

On the night of June 4, 1781, Cap-tain Jack Jouett rode 40 miles to warn Jefferson of his imminent seizure by Colonel Banastre Tarleton. On land that is now Keswick Vineyards, Tar-leton and his men stopped for break-fast – while Jefferson escaped. Almost one hundred years later, in preparation for the Battle of the Wilderness, troops led by Confederate General James A. Longstreet camped on the same land.

Keswick’s Eats & Beats series begins on Saturday, May 7 from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. with music by Showtime Revue and food by the Spice Sea Gourmet. On Saturday, May 14, Paulo Franco will play, and Pomme To Go will sell food. On Saturday, May 21, Koda & Marie from Chamomile & Whiskey will entertain, with food again by from Pomme To Go. On Saturday, May 28 it’s music by Oh Wow Boy!, and food from Two Brothers Southwestern Grill. On Saturday, June 4, it’s music by Sally Rose Band, and food from Spice Sea Gourmet.

When David and Ellen King bought their farm in Crozet in 1995 after mov-ing here from Houston, they weren’t thinking about planting a vineyard and opening a winery. All they want-ed was 12 flat acres for a polo field. Today they have both – Roseland Polo and King Family Vineyards. Tasting Room visitors are invited to go out in the fields to watch polo each Sunday beginning on Memorial Day and con-tinuing through mid-October, weath-er and field conditions permitting. Matches are free and begin at 1:00 p.m.

Situated on the 150-acre family farm where co-owner Karl Hambsch grew

up, Loving Cup Vineyard & Win-ery has been making wine the organic way since 2007. Riley, their black and tan hound, has been watching. Loving Cup will celebrate the 10th birthday of its vineyard mascot on Saturday, May 14 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.. A percentage of sales that day will benefit HOWS, a lo-cal non-profit that builds and provides doghouses to those who need them.

Greene CountyAt 1,700 ft., family-owned Stone

Mountain Vineyards outside of Dyke in Greene County is one of the highest vineyards in all of Virginia, and it’s probably the only one run by its founder and his five granddaughters. Stone Mountain will hold a Spring Open House and release its 2015 Rosé on Saturday, May 14. The John Wyant Band will play.

Louisa CountyIn 1978 in Gum Springs in Louisa

County, Lyn and Chuck Peple estab-lished Grayhaven Vineyards, now one of the oldest independent com-mercial vineyards in Virginia. In 1995 they launched their winery. Today Gray-haven produces “Old World” style wines including Pinotage, Marechal Foch, Sauvignon Blanc, Chambourcin, Caber-net Franc, Traminette, and Cayuga.

Grayhaven invites the public to bring lawn chairs or picnic blankets, and celebrate Mothers Day on Sunday, May 8 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The soulful Southern voice of John Tracy will be heard from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. The event is free, but there is a $5 charge for wine tasting. Artisan cheese or cheese and salami plates may be or-dered in in advance.

Madison CountyNestled at the eastern edge of

Shenandoah National Park, in the shadow of Old Rag Mountain and White Oak Canyon, DuCard Vine-yards is a “hobby gone wild” for hus-band and wife owners, Scott and Karen Elliff. DuCard will celebrate Mother’s

Day Weekend on Saturday May 7 from noon to 5:00 p.m., with Mom for Music on the Patio, featuring Erin Lunsford singing folk, blues, rock and country. The event is free, and Madison Garden Club will sell plants. DuCard’s Moth-er’s Day Sunday Wine Brunch, on Sun-day May 8 at 11:30 a.m., will feature food by l’Etoile Catering. Vicky Lee will play the harp. Tickets are $59 per person, not including tax and gratuity. Advance reservations are required.

DuCard’s Music on the Patio series starts on Saturday May 14 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m with the alt-rock and me-lodic tunes of singer/songwriter Travis Elliott. Picnicking is encouraged. On Saturday May 28, Oklahoma-born, Virginia-raised and Nashville-schooled singer-songwriter Pat Anderson will play rock and country tunes reminis-cent of Dylan, Springsteen, Petty and Todd Snider. On Sunday May 29, Bele-za will be back with their Brazilian jazz and flamenco. There is no cover charge for Music on the Patio events.

DuCard’s Wineappalooza!, Satur-day, June 11, from 12:00 to 7:00 p.m., is an annual festival of wine, food, music and crafts. The Local Vocals and Scuf-fletown will play, Pig & Steak will sell barbeque, and numerous craft vendors will have booths. Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door, and come with a DuCard logo wine glass. Regu-

lar tasting fees apply. Pets and families are welcome.

Nelson CountyElizabeth and Tony Smith grew up in

Albemarle County, attended Albemarle High School, and were married at the UVa Chapel. In 2009 they opened Af-ton Mountain Vineyards. On Sat-urday, May 28, the winery will release their 2016 rosé and open their “Afton After Hours” season with bluesman Eli Cook, who will play from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. The cover charge will be $5 per person, with kids under 18 free. Wine will be for sale by the bottle only. Food trucks will be on site.

Paul and Ruth Gorman developed a passion for Riesling wines while sta-tioned in the small German city of Bad Kreuznach. When Paul retired from the Army in 1985, they moved to their farm in Afton and established Cardinal Point Vineyard with two acres each of Riesling grapes and two of Cabernet Sauvignon.

On May 14 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., Kristina Lafiosca will lead an All Levels Yoga class. It’s a fundraiser for Common Ground Healing Arts. Tick-ets are $25, and include the class and a wine tasting directly after. Attend-ees should bring their own mats. The event is rain or shine. Pre-registration is encouraged. n

While wine festivals offer wonderful experiences at Central Virginia winer-ies, some folks find their schedules don’t jibe with

specific festival dates and others pre-fer to explore on their own. For many, visiting a winery can punctuate a day enjoying the outdoors with a hike or bicycle outing.

Then too, a winery visit can be a re-laxing conclusion to a day of showing visitors around some of our area’s out-standing historical landmarks since wine-making has a long tradition in our region.

“Thomas Jefferson, America’s ‘first distinguished viticulturist and great patron of wine and winegrowing, en-visioned wines from Virginia standing shoulder to shoulder with the great wines of the world,’ declares the bro-chure for our region’s Monticello Wine Trail. Mr. Jefferson supported winemak-ing as early as the 1770s and today, al-most 250 years later, Virginia is the 5th largest producer of wine in the U. S.

The Monticello Wine Trail, an ex-cellent resource for exploring the re-

gion’s wineries, meanders through the Monticello American Viticulture Area (AVA). According to Virginia’s official travel site, more than half of Virginia’s 2000 vineyard acres grow within the Monticello AVA, which encompasses Charlottesville and the counties of Al-bemarle, Greene, Orange, and Nelson.

An American Viticultural Area is a designated wine-grape-growing region with specific geographic features and boundaries defined by the Alcohol and Tobacco and Trade Bureau which is ac-tually a part of the U.S. Treasury De-partment. The Monticello AVA, named for Mr. Jefferson’s home, calls itself the Birthplace of American Wine. Its gran-ite-based clay soil is particularly well suited for grapes.

The Wine TrailWineries along the trail include

modest family boutique vintners as well as larger operations. Some are long-established, while new ones join the Wine Trail from time to time. For example, Afton Mountain Vineyards in Nelson County was one of Virgin-ia’s first farm wineries with original

vines planted in the 1970s and Barbo-ursville Vineyards in Orange County was established 40 years ago this year. Much more recently, Loving Cup Vine-yard and Winery in Albemarle County became a certified-organic vineyard in 2012—one of only a handful on the East Coast.

Visitors will find a wide variety of wines. Look for Chardonnay, Viogni-er, Cabernet Franc or Sauvignon, Bor-deaux, Syrah, Merlot, Riesling, Pinot Noir and others. Not every winery has every varietal, of course, so the individu-al listings on the Monticello Wine Trail website include each winery’s history and philosophy, what wines are typical-ly available, tasting hours and fees.

Most wineries also list policies about children and pets as well as whether groups must make advance reservations. Information also includes the availability of food—from snacks to meals—and if visitors are welcome to bring their own food or picnics. Some wineries offer tours, lodging, private tastings, and wine clubs. At least one has a fenced dog park and another sug-gests “don’t trust MapQuest.”

ExtrasSome wineries host gatherings from

weddings to baby showers and other special occasions. Many have both in-door and outdoor seating and picnic areas with quiet scenic views. Others offer special events such as musical performances and fundraisers for non-profits

For example, each Sunday from May through October, Keswick Vineyards hosts Yappy Hours when local animal

shelters and societies bring dogs in need of homes to play with patrons and other dogs. A portion of sales in the tasting room are donated to the visiting shelter and guests are encour-aged to bring their own animals.

A number provide music for their visitors. For instance, from May to Oc-tober, the Grace Estate Winery is home to Friday Evening in the Vineyards with a variety of music and food trucks available for people who don’t have time to pack a picnic.

Another offering music is Veritas Vineyard and Winery with their Starry Nights concerts the second Saturday of each month from June to September. Visitors may bring a picnic and sit on the lawn or reserve a table to enjoy a buffet.

If You GoA helpful brochure with a map is

available at member wineries and at the Charlottesville/Albemarle Visitors Center adjacent to The Pavilion at the east end of the Downtown Mall. The brochure may also be downloaded from MonticelloWineTrail.com.

Using the brochure map, it’s easy to plot an itinerary of adjacent wineries and know which ones might be ideal at a mealtime. For example, northeast of Charlottesville along Route 20, vis-itors can visit Barboursville Vineyards, Burnley Vineyards, Chestnut Oak Vineyard, Horton Vineyards and Rey-nard Florence Vineyard.

Another cluster, at the foot of the Blue Ridge and within a few miles of each other, are Afton Mountain Vine-yards, Veritas Vineyard & Winery, Pol-lak Vineyards, Cardinal Point Vineyard & Winery, and Flying Fox Vineyard.

Smartphone ConvenienceThe Monticello Wine Trail website

is smartphone optimized so it detects when visitors to the website are using a portable device such as a smartphone, tablet, or iPad. It then automatically switches to a different format.

“Effective website,” reports one user. “On my smartphone, I simply clicked on ‘find wineries nearby’ and it pulled up a page with the half dozen close to where I was at the time. It included links to each specific winery’s website showing hours, foodie info, and such. The ‘get directions’ link quickly pulled up Google Earth, with directions from my current location to the winery.”

This summer, consider combining your outdoor activities with a stop at a Monticello area winery. Or three. n

Marilyn Pribus and her husband live in Albemarle County near Charlottesville. A recent Mother’s Day found the whole local clan (including five mothers) picnicking and wine tasting at the Jefferson Vineyards.
