What’s Happening Around Town?Big Brothers, Big Sisters Celebrates National Mentoring Month By Honoring Bigs and Focusing on the “MEN” in Mentoring

January marks the 15th anniversa-ry of National Mentoring Month, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Cen-tral Blue Ridge (BBBS) is planning to both honor its current volunteer men-tors during this special time and raise awareness about the ever-present need for more caring adults.

In partnership with Starr Hill Brew-ery, BBBS is kicking off the celebration of its current mentors (Bigs) with a “BIG Night Out” at the Starr Hill Brew-ery Tasting Room in Crozet on Friday, January 8th. This event is open to the public! Additionally, $1 of every beer sold in their tasting room throughout the entire month of January will be do-nated back to BBBS, thanks to Starr

Hill’s Cheers for Charity program. Support will be used to provide more mentors to children on the BBBS wait-ing list from the Charlottesville and Al-bemarle communities.

In addition to the month-long part-nership with Starr Hill, BBBS is look-ing to “Put the MEN in Mentoring” this year. It is setting a goal of bringing in 75 new male mentors to serve boys ages 6-16 on its waiting list.

As Dave Koehn, Voice of the Virginia Cavaliers and Big Brother for five years says about his relationship with his Lit-tle, “It’s not exactly heavy lifting...we’re walking the dog, we’re playing video games, we’re throwing the football in the park.”

“There is a powerful effect as a re-sult of mentoring, demonstrated by research and the experiences of young people who are connected to a men-tor in real life,” said Jackie Bright, BBBS Executive Director. “Mentoring is linked to improved academic, social and economic prospects for young people. Those improvements ultimate-ly strengthen our community.”

An assortment of other activities will be held throughout the month including:• IamaMentorDayonJanuary

14th • MentoringSignUponJanuary

18th, the Martin Luther King Na-tional Day of Service

• ThankYourMentorDayon January 21st To keep up with National Mentoring

Month activities, LIKE the BBBS Face-book page at facebook.com/blueridgebigs and visit, www.blueridgebigs.org. n

The reviews are raves. “My home away from home throughout the year,” one online re-viewer writes. “Friend-ly staff, gorgeous en-

vironment and best of all, quiet,” he continues. “This is one of my favorite places on the planet,” says another. “I’ve been here many times, and I’ve never been disappointed.”

They’re talking, of course, about Wintergreen, the four-season resort in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Nelson County. This time of the year, when it snows, Wintergreen is the place to go for a fun-filled day on the slopes. And this time of the year, when it doesn’t snow, Wintergreen is . . . the place to go for a fun-filled day on the slopes. Thanks to a state of the art, 400-gun snowmaking system that can shower its slopes with 8,000 gallons a min-ute, the 11,000 acre playground with the gorgeous views is a Shangri-La for snowbirds all season long.

SlopesTwice named “Best Ski Resort” by

readers of Washington Post, it’s a desti-nation spot that attracts a quarter of

a million sport and nature lovers each winter. They come for its 24 ski and snowboard slopes, its terrain parks for both the skilled and the scared, and its playground and ice skating pond for the youngsters. They come for ski and snow-board lessons and for NASTAR ski races.

Wintergreen has snowscapes suit-able for every level of experience and expertise, from the Upper & Lower Dobie slopes for beginners, to Eagles Swoop and Tyro for intermediate ski-ers, to a 2,000-foot single-black-di-amond called The Outer Limits and a double-black-diamond dubbed the Cliffhanger. Two surface conveyor lifts – moving sidewalks – transport begin-ners. Five high-speed, six-chair lifts can handle up to 11,200 skiers an hour. Skis, boots and poles are available for rent by individual session or for the en-tire season.

ObstaclesCome winter a skateboarder trades

skates for skis and sidewalks for snow. Voted 1st Place by Blue Ridge Outdoor Magazine, Wintergreen’s Terrain Park lets freestyle skiers hone their skills over an ever-changing array of more

than 40 features including manmade obstacles like rainbows, straight rails, battleships, down-kinks, s-rails and fun boxes, plus shaped-in-the-snow fea-tures like tabletops, rollers, and spines. The prospect of navigating obstacles in a crowd may give less experienced skiers pause, but Wintergreen Gener-al Manager Hank Thiess stresses that park staff strive for a safe environment, urging users “to abide by the rules and be respectful of other people. There’s a phrase that is used there,” Theiss says. “It’s ‘respect gets respect.’ Everybody watches out for the other person.”

Freestylers, skiers and snowboarders can enjoy special Terrain Park competi-tions this season – three ““Rail Jams” and two “Slopestyles” – on January 16 and 30, February 13 and 27, and March 5. March 5-6 will be Freestyle Double Cross Week-end, with four competitors at a time rac-ing through a specially designed terrain park. Prizes will be awarded.

Tubes, Skates and Fun ParksIf a terrain park is an obstacle

course, a tubing park is a “scream ma-chine.” The screaming comes from fel-low tubers careening down The Plunge – over three football fields long – at al-most 30 miles per hour, or down The Zip – a mere 900 feet – at over 40. Slide, glide and spin fans can enjoy the 45x90 foot Shamokin Ice Rink, located in the heart of the mountain village, just off the Blue Ridge Terrace. Refrigerated by a 125 ton chiller, it accommodates up to 60 people at a time, and may be

booked for skating parties, birthday parties, broomball events, and the like. Shamokin is close by two Wintergreen restaurants, the family dining and nightlife hotspot The Edge, and the casual but creative Copper Mine Bis-tro serving traditional breakfasts and a Mediterranean menu of tapas, small and large plates, and pizzas.

Ridgely’s Fun Park on Discovery

Ridge is where the pre-ski crowd dis-covers outdoor winter activities. Ridge-ly’s attractions include a mini-tubing carousel, bear paw snow shoes, tunnels, and a not too steep sledding hill, plus a “magic carpet ride” conveyor lift. The Ridgely’s tee-pee is the spot to warm up, make s’mores, and drink hot choc-olate. Park mascot, Ridgely the Bear, makes frequent appearances.

LessonsWintergreen Resort offers ski and

snowboard instruction for all ages and ability levels based on the American Teaching System. Mountain Mornings is a five-week ski program for children ages 3-6 with free equipment rental, two-hour lessons and four-hour lift tickets. Parents are encouraged to ski for free, or relax in The Gristmill coffee shop while the kids learn. The Child-care + Snowplay program for age 3 and up is a full day program with an hour of introductory ski instruction, plus arts, crafts and group games. Rid-gely’s Rippers is full day program for ages 4-12 with four hours of ski les-son instruction, lunch, snacks and hot chocolate. Mountain Explorers is a full day program with approximately four hours of instruction for intermediate and advanced skiers and snowboarders ages 7-14. Lunch, snacks, and hot choc-olate are served.

Wintergreen’s Future First opened as a ski resort in 1975,

Wintergreen began welcoming sum-mer visitors in 1977 with a golf course, and added tennis in 1978, and opened an inn and conference center in 1980. Coal baron Jim Justice spent millions upgrading the property after purchas-ing it in 2012. In February 2015 Justice sold the resort to EPR Properties, a Kansas City, Missouri based real estate investment trust. “Everyone is excited about the new owner and what they’re likely to do in the resort going forward,”

says Wintergreen Resort Premier Prop-erties REALTOR® Brian Chase. “As a group of partners they have a world of experience, and they’re here for the longterm. They spent tens of millions of dollars to buy Wintergreen and are going to spend tens of millions more to make it a premier destination for the Mid-Atlantic. That gives me great confidence in the future of the resort and the community. I have every confi-dence they will reinvent Wintergreen.”

Home on the Mountain, Home in the Valley

Wintergreen’s bucolic setting and close proximity to the George Wash-ington National Forest make it a par-adise for nature lovers. It’s fine and casual dining establishments, its warm weather activities like golf, tennis, swimming, fly fishing and hiking, and cultural activities including a month-long summer festival festival devoted to classical music make it a year ‘round destination for some, and a retirement or vacation home for others.

Chase grew up near the resort and remembers when the road up the mountain was still just gravel. He learned how to ski there, and later taught skiing there himself. “It was a natural evolution from a childhood love of the resort to adulthood,” Chase says. In 1999 he purchased a home “on the ridge. l call it the million dollar view for the price of a condo.” When he looks down he sees the ski slopes. Further down in the valley he can see Lake Monacan and the community of Stoney Creek. Looking left there is Crawford’s Knob, a 1,346 acres of hardwood forest protected by a conser-vation easement and managed by the Nature Foundation. Further left there is the George Washington National Forest over top of the Blue Ridge Park-way. “We have 180 degree views, and it’s just gorgeous,” he says.

Up on the mountain, which rises to almost 4,000 feet, most Wintergreen res-idences, like Chase’s are second homes. Out of a population of 2350, roughly 15 percent of the homeowners – about 500 people – live at the resort year ‘round. “Those people who call the mountain ‘home,’ they’re a hardy bunch,” Chase says. “The other 85 percent are looking for what I was looking for: a place to get away, a place where you can go with your family and extended family, a place that offers something for everybody,” including golf courses, tennis courts, and adventure center and an indoor gaming facility. “Maybe you’re in the grandparent category, and you enjoy hiking,” Chase says. “The Nature Foun-dation offers guided tours. You can go birdwatching or learn more about the

flora and fauna.” Some Wintergreen lovers like to live

up on the mountain looking down in the valley. Others prefer to be down in the valley looking up at the mountain. It may be hard to choose one dream location over the other, but either way, this is a smart time to buy. 90 condos, 16 townhomes and 106 single fami-ly homes of 1,200 to more than 7,000 square feet are currently available on the mountain. Lots are for sale as well, for folks who prefer to build their own homes.

Down in the Rockfish River Valley community of Stoney Creek, Chase says, “you have to go back to 2001 or before to find similar prices.” 70 per-cent or more of residents there are full or part-time, Chase estimates – either pre- or semi-retired, perhaps staying weekends, perhaps spending the warm weather months in the valley and the cold ones in Florida. A typical lot size is one or two acres. Amenities include

an outdoor pool, tennis courts, and twenty-acre Lake Monocan Park, with picnic area, horseshoe pits, sand beach with volleyball court, and recreation-al equipment. The Stoney Creek Golf Course is ranked 34th best in the U.S. by Golf Digest.

Because Stoney Creek is only 30 minutes from Charlottesville, Chase notes, “you really have the best of both worlds, an incredibly beautiful bucolic setting with lots of privacy and no stop lights where you can really know your neighbors and yet still have access to cultural events at the University of Vir-ginia or John Paul Jones Arena.”

Physician and author Dr. Randy Crenshaw and his wife have found a very friendly group of people up on the mountain. Crenhaw had never spent much time there, but that changed after a neighbor purchased a home on the 16th fairway. An avid golfer, Crenshaw bought his own condo on the golf course in 2013. Nowadays

when he looks out of his windows, he’s looking at the 18th fairway on Devil’s Knob, “one of the most magnificent golf courses I’ve ever played on.” In the fall and winter when the leaves are off the oak trees, he has a view of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Crenshaw and his wife love to swim in the Olympic size pool or soak in a hot tub in the Aquatics & Fitness Cen-ter. He fishes for native brook trout, and when it’s too cold to golf on the mountain, he takes his clubs down to Stoney Creek. “Wintergreen,” he says, “has something for everybody.” n

Scenic Nelson County is mid-way between Charlottesville and Lynchburg and can be reached via either Route 29 or 151. Though predominantly

rural, Nelson is close enough to Crozet, Charlottesville, Lynchburg and the Shenandoah Valley for easy access to jobs, shopping and medical care, mak-ing it a popular choice for young profes-sionals, families and retirees, as well as those who enjoy looking at a beautiful view while they work from home.

Outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, snowboarding, skiing or golf-ing are big draws for Nelson, attracting visitors as well as homebuyers. Both the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Appa-lachian Trail wind through the coun-ty, which is also home to Wintergreen Resort. The county’s wineries, cideries, distilleries and breweries, plus associ-ated festivals and events, are also a big part of what makes Nelson a popular place to visit, and often these visitors fall in love with the area and choose to make it their home.

Nelson’s real estate market is con-tinuing to recover, and while buyers can still find some good deals, prop-erty is moving, especially in the under $300,000 price range.

Spectacular Mountain ViewsAsk anyone about the popularity of

Nelson County and chances are they will mention the natural beauty first. The panoramic views from the Blue Ridge Parkway or the Appalachian Trail are well known and many visitors enjoy driving the Nelson Scenic Route via Crabtree Falls, the Parkway and down past Wintergreen to Route 151.

The mountains offer lots of ameni-ties such as hiking trails and other out-door fun like canoeing and kayaking. Golfers enjoy the year round public course at Stoney Creek and, during the summer months, the private course on the mountain at Wintergreen where the temperature is always cooler and the views superb. Of course, the win-ter months bring the skiers and snow-boarders who take over Wintergreen’s popular slopes.

Other AttractionsMaureen Kelley, Director of the

Nelson County Visitor Information Center, described outdoor recreation as just one strategy for bringing visi-tors to the county. She explained that the county had moved from being “ski-centric” to a place that has some-thing to offer all year round. “We are no longer reliant on mother nature to keep visitors coming,” she added.

Tim Hess with Wintergreen Real Estate agreed, explaining it used to

be that “the economic driver for the county was skiing,” but now the win-eries, breweries, distilleries and cideries draw people from places like Mary-land, Pennsylvania and North Caroli-na. Bold Rock Brewery, the cidery that has what Hess called a “magnificent facility,” has now been joined by Blue Toad Hard Cider located on the prop-erty that was once Wintergreen Win-ery. The new owners are planning a place that is family friendly with cider for both adults and children.

The other draw for visitors and res-idents alike is the music festivals. In 2016 the Lockn’ Music Festival will re-turn to Oak Ridge Farm in Arrington for the fourth time. This annual out-door, four-day event brings lots of visi-tors with over 70 percent coming from out of state, Kelley said. Festy, an-other popular outdoor music festival, enjoyed five years at Devils Backbone Brewery, but will be in a different, not yet disclosed location, in 2016.

The Real Estate MarketNelson is a rural market that ap-

peals to people who want more space and enjoy peace and quiet. Like the rest of our area it suffered during the reces-sion, but is coming back.

Marlo Allen, Associate Broker with Mountain Area Realty in Nellysford, is a native of Nelson and passionate about helping people buy and sell homes there. She said that the Nelson

market is “stabilizing.” It still favors buyers who can find some good deals. However she added, “properties that are priced appropriately are selling well.”

With regard to non-Wintergreen properties, Natt Hall with Virginia Estates described those priced under $300,000 as “completely picked over.” He added, “there are no more foreclo-sures.” There is still a good inventory of properties priced between $300,000 and $600,000, but he estimates these have decreased by as much as 70 per-cent since the recession.

The natural beauty and the many activities make Nelson a popular choice for people looking for a second home. Hall estimates that the market is half full-time residents and half sec-ond homebuyers.

With its central location between Charlottesville and Lynchburg, Nelson is also a good choice for two income families with spouses working in each of the two cities. Families also like the schools in Nelson, which Hess said have “great facilities,” and yet are small enough where teachers know everyone and can offer a more “personal touch.”

Many retirees settle in Nelson, at-tracted by its amenities and the avail-ability of high quality medical care, Hall explained. Nelson residents can access care at Martha Jefferson, UVA and Augusta Medical Center or at the satellite clinics in the area. Another plus are the taxes, which are lower than in nearby areas.

Overall Hall described Nelson resi-dents as “an eclectic group,” who nev-ertheless get along well with each other in Nelson’s “harmonious, laid-back atmosphere,” thanks to their shared appreciation for the natural beauty and the fact that if you choose, “people leave you alone.”

If you love outdoor activities and want to live in the midst of some of our area’s most beautiful scenery, ask your agent about Nelson where taxes are low and the perfect home with a spectacu-lar view comes at a terrific price. n
