there are very good reasons to come to center on the Hill … the place for active adults besides the obvious reasons of learning or having fun. Indeed, a person who has a sense of connectedness not only has an enhanced quality of life but also lives a longer and healthier life! This was clearly seen in a recent review from Brigham Young University in Utah, which looked at 148 studies involving more than 300,000 people. It linked stronger social relationships with a 50% increased chance of survival, on average, over the course of the studies. And the effect was consistent across a number of factors, such as age, sex, and health status.

in this aWard Winning film, a concerned mother turned filmmaker aims her camera at the high-stakes, high-pressure culture that has invaded our schools and our children’s lives, creating unhealthy, disengaged, unprepared and stressed-out youth. Race to Nowhere points to the silent epidemics in our schools: cheating has become commonplace; students are disengaged; stress-related illness and depression are rampant; and many young people arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired.

“Every once in a while, a film comes along that has the potential to change the culture,” said New York Times bestselling author Rachel Simmons (Odd Girl Out: The Hidden Culture of Aggression in Girls). “Race to Nowhere shines a light on the crisis of learning and meaning facing American education. The film is both a call to arms and a beacon of hope, a source of relief and outrage and a way forward for all of us.”

Special Events at Center on the Hill

Health TalkThere are a number of theories about why

being socially connected reduces mortality. One theory is that social support buffers against stress – that is, provides emotional and tangible resources to help us deal with adverse events and illness, according to the Brigham Young researchers. Family, friends and buddies at Center on the Hill may also encourage us, directly or indirectly, to take better care of ourselves. And being part of a social network often gives us meaningful roles that boost self-esteem and life purpose, which in turn can improve health. “We take relationships for granted – we’re like fish that don’t notice the water, said Timothy Smith, one of the Brigham Young researchers.

So get involved, stay active, keep moving and know that getting and staying connected is key in maintaining your good health and reducing your mortality.

Featuring the heartbreaking stories of young people in all types of communities who have been pushed to the brink, educators who are burned out and worried that students aren’t developing the skills they need, and parents who are trying to do what’s best for their kids, Race to Nowhere is a call to action to challenge current assumptions on how to best prepare the youth of America to become healthy, bright, contributing and leading citizens. Facilitated discussion to follow the movie.

Linda’s international e-Bay store, called “Linda’s Stuff,” now employs 56 people. “Anyone can do it,” Lightman concedes. Come hear Linda and her husband and business partner, Fred Lightman, speak about their business and answer any questions you have on how you can become an e-Bayer, or how Linda and Fred could work their magic for you.
