February 2017 Around the World on Valentine’s Day
Marilyn Helmer
On February 14, we, in North America, honour St. Valentine by showering our loved one with cards, jewelry, chocolates and red roses. But holiday
traditions differ from country to country and Valentine’s Day is no exception. Here are some of the unique ways the holiday of lovers is celebrated in other parts of the world.
In Denmark, the delicate white Snowdrop is the flower of choice. Instead of a card, Danish men may choose to send their love a gaekkebrev or “joking letter”. The gallant fellow puts his creative skills to the test by writing a love poem on a sheet of cutwork paper. He signs the poem with dots … one dot for each letter in his name. It is then up to the recipient to guess who the secret sender is. If she guesses correctly, she will be rewarded with a special egg at Easter. No information is given as to what happens if the lady guesses incorrectly!
At one time, France had a rather brutal Valentine’s Day custom called dessin d’amour or “drawing for love.” Drawing is a bit of a misnomer since it did not involve sketching a portrait of one’s love. Instead, single men and women would take a position in houses facing each other. Then the men would call out the name of their chosen partner. However, if after meeting his valentine, the young man was less than enchanted with her, he would simply walk away. Hold on, ladies, it does get better. The day ended with a bonfire, built by the scorned women, in which they burned effigies of their feckless sweethearts, while shouting insults at them. Eventually the French government had to step in and ban the custom because things got downright nasty. After that, French lovers took a cue from their English counterparts and began sending each other ornate cards with loving messages.
Japan celebrates Valentine’s Day, twice. On February 14, it is the ladies who start things off by giving their partner a gift. On March 14, also known as White Day because it is reputed to have been introduced by a marshmallow company, the man must give the gift back to the lady. This does make it a day to celebrate since essentially ladies get to choose their own gift - so no more frying pans, tea kettles, aprons or other such unromantic gifts on the day to honour love. Chocolates are the most popular gift, but since Japanese ladies believe that a gift should come from the heart, not from a store, they make the chocolates themselves. One wonders – don’t they have Cadbury or Pot of Gold in Japan?
Although Valentine’s Day is celebrated in Germany with the usual hearts, flowers and chocolates, something quite unique is added - a pig! Only in very rare cases is a live pig involved, though. Instead the porcine figure, believed to represent love and lust, is presented by lovers in the form of pictures, ornaments and chocolates. As well, heart-shaped ginger cookies
decorated with words such as Ich liebe dich. - “I love you.” are the treat of the day.
Italy celebrates the day of romance with a spring festival where lovers gather to enjoy music, poetry readings and the exchange of
gifts. One of the most popular gifts is a box of Baci Perugina chocolate kisses. In 1922, Luisa Spagnoli created the popular treat of dark chocolate with the hazel nut filling. Included in the box is a romantic message in four different languages. Another Italian tradition promises that the first man a woman sees on Valentine’s Day will become her husband within a year. Let us hope that the tradition extends only to single men and women!
Whatever your Valentine’s Day celebrations are, may you have a yummy, happy day!

Several members have mentioned that they cannot access our channels 4 and 5. There are several reasons for this inability to access. We would like to determine the scope of the
problem in order to see what remedial actions may be suggested. Please contact Board member Rick Rock (box 67) or Gary Helmer (box 137).
"Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow" as the song goes. We certainly are receiving snow, snow, snow and with a small rise in temperature turning to ice. May be a good idea to
obtain an aid that fits on your boots (if you have not already done so) which helps make walking safer.
Health and Happiness to all!

Maintenance Cost Review Committee (MCRC) Peggy Barton, Recording Secretary
The maintenance cost report for the month of December 2016 completes what we all are now aware of having much higher costs than previous
years. In discussions on this statement, we looked at several reasons for this – snow plowing and salting, sewer expenses for the upgraded RBC1, upgrades to the Rec Centre – upgrades to the tennis courts to name a few.
The December cost report as always has been posted in the Board room for you all to take a look at. This report, prepared by head office, shows all expense items, revenue items, costs per home per month and many other details. Please take a moment to take a look at the report and if you have any questions at all you can contact Randy Cook the MCRC chair (519 787-2464) or email at [email protected] and he will be more than pleased to research your questions.
There was much discussion during our joint meeting on the routine of the snow plowing and the concerns raised by some that they have had trouble getting to appointments. If you are aware of a need for early plow/salt you just need to call the office. As the snow removal crew starts very early in the morning, it would be suggested that you call the office the day prior.
The White Bark Way Annual Block Party
Susan Langille on behalf of the WBW Block Party Committee
I know that it is the middle of January and we are months away from the wonderful, hot, beautiful days of summer, but the WBW Block Party Committee feels that it is time to have us all thinking and dreaming of ‘fun in the sun’.
The mixture of outdoor games, excellent food and good friends at last year’s party, encouraged us to arrange another get together for 2017. The attendance for the past two years was almost duplicated, so it would be great if we matched or even exceeded those numbers.
Just to spice things up a bit, a few new ideas and plans are scheduled for this year’s block party, so please plan to attend. Invitations will be sent out in May with more information and specific details.
Committee Members: Sue Anderson, Jean Barratt, Ken and Judy Busch, Carol Doyon, Susan and Terry Langille and Sylvie Wesley.

Table Tennis Clyde Henry, 519 787-2223
On December 27, table tennis/ping pong started here at Pine Meadows and has become very popular. It has become so popular in fact, that we are in need of another table.
Therefore, if anyone has a ping pong table that is not being used, would you mind contributing it to the table tennis group?
Thank you.

New Year's Eve - Dinner and Dance Pearl Davis, Chair, Social Committee
The New Year’s Eve dinner and dance was a resounding success. A good time was had by all.
The evening began with a delectable dinner prepared and served by Mike, Julie and their crew from the Belwood Store.
The two happy early bird winners were Ken Lindsay and Gayla Mehling, who won the cost of their ticket back.
The DJ, Paul Hock, kept the dance floor full and hopping, with a variety of music. Spot dances throughout the evening were won by: Kurt and Sandy Christie, Pearl and Bud Davis, Jim and Sue Taylor, Rose and Doug Blenkiron and Carol and Gord Wood.
The following lucky people won door prizes: Wayne Douglas, Bob Arial, Carol Wood, John McKenna, Joan Winstanley and Doug Armstrong.
We would like to thank the following sponsors who provided the generous gifts for our many spot dances and door prizes: Heritage River
Retirement Home, the Mandarin in Guelph, the Grand River Casino, Pizza Pizza, Pizza Delight, the Gorge Restaurant in Elora, and the Brewhouse in Fergus
Kudos to: Gary Helmer and Rick Rock for the slideshow on the big screen; our photographers, Elizabeth Rock and Gary Helmer; the Social Committee for setting up and cleaning up the hall; and to
Don Sewell and Sue Wylie-Sewell for organizing the event, even though they were not here to enjoy it.
But most of all, we would like to thank the 105 people who bought tickets and supported the event because it was them who made the evening a success.
Thank you all and all the best in 2017. .
