We know that buying or building a home can be an intimidating task, and may not happen immediately once you're married. Follow these tips to make it a smooth and enjoyable time! Determine how much you can afford The first thing you need to do is sit down and take a look at your finances. You need to determine how much you can afford to put down for a house, as well as determine how much you can afford for monthly mortgage payments. A good idea is to get pre-approved for a loan. By doing this, you will have a better idea of what price range to browse. Shop for a loan Don't jump at the first person to offer you a loan. Shop around a little bit for the best price, and do some negotiating to get the best loan you can. Look for a home buying program Home buying programs can be especially helpful for first time buyers.

Page 3: The Organized Bride

Decide the size of home you need and how long you plan to live there If you are planning on moving in the next few years, it may be in your best interest to rent for a few years before buying. If you want to have children in the next few years, you need to take that into account when searching for your new home. Shop for a home Be open-minded when shopping for a home. Look at the range of options to see what will work best for you. Make an offer If you are using a real estate agent, discuss a fair offer. The seller may counter offer, at which point you will need to negotiate a price. Get a home inspection It is important to make your offer contingent on a home inspection. This will help you avoid buying a home that has a lot of costly problems. Find homeowners insurance It is important that you obtain homeowners insurance before finalizing your buy. Shop around for the best deal. Sign the papers Finally, the time has come to close on your house! This is an exciting step, but be sure to read all the paperwork before you sign!

Beauty THE BEAUTIFUL BRIDE

Your Beauty Regimen If you’re not a regular gym-goer, picking up a routine is the first step to becoming one. Whether you want to drop a few pounds, reduce your dress size or just wanting to tone up a little, the first place is to start exercising. Bring your hubby-to-be along. It can be a bonding time you spend together that can be carried into your married life. Make sure your getting a balanced diet and plenty of sleep. These two things are important for keeping your energy levels high. You’ll need plenty of energy during the planning stages of your wedding because it can be overwhelming. Start a skin regimen. If you have troubled skin, consult a dermatologist or aesthetician to get a beauty plan. Get regular facials to reduce impurities and give your skin a healthy glow. Keep your skin clean and moisturized on a daily basis. Decide on your overall look for your big day. Do you want to go natural, glamorous, or classic? If you aren’t a make-up pro, consult a professional make-up artist who can try out different looks and go through test-runs with you. Address your tresses. Get regular trims from your favorite stylist to keep your hair healthy. Decide how you want your hair to look on your wedding day, and do at least on test-run to be sure. Wear waterproof mascara! Most brides tear up at some point during their wedding day. But even if you aren’t much of a crier, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Less is not always more. While you don’t want to look over-done, you will most likely want to apply a little more makeup than usual, as photos can make you look washed out. Don’t try a new look on your wedding day. You want to look like yourself, and you want to be confortable in your skin. While you want a healthy glow, you don’t want to get sunburned, tan lines, or an orange hue. Try out any tanning options that you are thinking about far in advance of the BIG day. And DON’T over do it! Love yourself and your body. Your husband is marrying you because he loves who you are and how you look inside and out. Be confident in your own skin.

Page 5: The Organized Bride

The first decision is whether to use a professional make-up artist, hair stylist or both. From the convenience of on-location service, to the reassurance that all of the bridal attendants will look their very best, enlisting the help of an expert is one simple way to shorten the list of wedding day worries. Make-up Artist A true artist will know trade secrets for not only fashioning a longer lasting look, but for accentuating your best features. Set up a consultation a few weeks before your wedding. Have the makeup artist do a test-run to ensure that you will get the results that you want on your wedding day. You don’t want to look overdone. Keep makeup natural, allowing it to accentuate your existing features. Hair Stylist An initial consultant is generally recommended for to six months prior to the wedding. This gives the stylist an opportunity to discern what the bride is envisioning and to create a look that complements her facial features as well as the headpiece or veil. Necessary items for this visit are the headpiece or veil and a digital camera. Have photos taken from several angles to assist this stylist in re-creating the same look on your wedding day. Speak up if you don’t like what the hairstylist has created. You don't want to be unhappy with your pictures later and wish you had spoken up. Fitness Whether your goal is to trim down, tone up, or just simply get fit, we have some simple tips that if you follow, and mold to your lifestyle you should be a healthy, happy bride on your wedding day! An apple a day! The first step to getting a healthy body is paying attention to your diet, and by diet, we mean eating lifestyle. Now is the time to change the way you eat, but not the time to follow some crazy fad diet. Your body runs on fuel, and that fuel comes from food. You need a well balanced diet to have all the energy planning a wedding will take!

Page 6: The Organized Bride

Hydrate your body Water is one of the biggest secrets for staying healthy and losing weight. Drinking plenty of water each day will keep your hair and skin looking fabulous, give you more energy and keep you healthy. Keep an eye on your alcohol consumption during all pre-wedding festivities! Alcohol can leave you dehydrated and tired. Put on your running shoes With your hectic days between planning a wedding, and continuing your everyday life, finding time to hit the gym may be an impossible task. Hiring a personal trainer is a great investment in making over your body. This will also help maximize the few times a week you manage to make it to the gym. If a gym membership is not in your budget – there are plenty of other ways to get in shape before your wedding. Simple everyday things such as parking in the back of the parking lot will help add a few steps to your day. Instead of spending down time with your fiancé watching TV, get out of the house and go for a bike ride or a hike. Better yet, sign up for dancing lessons to help prepare you for your first dance. BEAUTY TIPS If you chose to do your own make-up there are many tricks that will help you accentuate your best features, as well as create a long lasting look. Visit your favorite make-up counter for a free makeover. Have the make-up artist chart how she did your make-up and what colors she used, then purchase the items she used so you can re-create the look at home. Lasting Lips Select a lipstick rather than a gloss in a color you are comfortable wearing. Although you may not typically use a lip liner, your wedding day is the one-day you will want to. Liner helps precise lipstick application as well as lasting lip color. Once the liner and color have been applied pull apart a two-ply tissue and place one layer over your lips. With a soft, fluffy makeup dust over the tissue with face powder to set. Perfect Brows After applying eye shadow, fill in your eyebrows with a shadow that matches your brow or hair color. You should consider having your eyebrows professionally shaped especially if you pluck your eyebrows regularly. Brows should not extend beyond the inner corner of the eye (near the bridge of your nose), and the eyebrow arch looks best when it is just past the center of the eye.

Page 7: The Organized Bride

Gorgeous Hair The most common wedding hairstyles are still classic up-dos, such as the French twist or chignon. If you prefer to wear your hair down, loose curls are simple and elegant. Hot rollers are a great way to create voluminous, long lasting curls. Accentuated Eyes To really accentuate the eyes use an eyelash curler and several applications of mascara, allowing your lashes to dry between each application. Also, be sure to gently separate eyelashes between each application. Use a highlighter shadow on your brow bone and the inner corners of your eyes to open them up. For added allure and definition, experiment with liquid eyeliners and pencils. When using a liner, be sure to gently smudge it for a soft more refined look. For longer lasting eye color swipe a light foundation over your lids before applying your shadow. You may also want to try a cream shadow instead of a powder, as they tend to stay on longer. Finishing touch: Experiment with false lashes to really make your eyes stand out. Blushable Cheeks For blush, use two closely related shades to create a warm, natural effect. As with your shadow, a cream blush will have a longer lasting effect.

Bridesmaids ATTENDANTS BY YOUR SIDE

The task of selecting bridesmaids can be fun and exciting, however if can also be stressful and worrisome. Below are some things to keep in mind when selecting your bridesmaids: The number of bridesmaids and groomsman in your bridal party greatly depends on the size and style of your wedding. You don't have to have an equal number of bridesmaids and groomsmen. It is typically a nice gesture to invite as least one of the grooms sisters to be a bridesmaid, but it is not a breach of etiquette should you choose not to. Do not feel obligated to invite someone to be in your wedding just because you were in his or hers. Keep in mind that bridesmaids, especially the maid of honor, are there to assist you on your wedding day. When choosing bridesmaids make sure they are dependable and won’t let you down on this important day.

Bridesmaid Fashion

Selecting your bridesmaid attire can be difficult, especially with all of your bridesmaids weighing in with their opinion. The current trend is bridal party apparel is selecting one color for your bridesmaids, and allowing them to select from a variety of dress shapes. This ensures that each bridesmaid gets the best fit for her body type. Many bridal salons offer a range of dresses all in the same shade and fabric, but in different styles. Also check local department stores for a wide selection of dresses. It is customary for each bridesmaid to pay for her own dress, keep price in mind when selecting dresses. The average price for a bridesmaid gown ranges from $150-$225. If the shoes are to be dyed, have them all done together by the same specialist to ensure uniform color.

BRIDAL SHOWER In the months leading up to the Wedding Day, it is customary for the maid of honor and bridesmaids to throw a bridal shower for the bride. Bridal showers are meant to help stock the bride and grooms home, as well as to be a time for the bride to relax and celebrate with her closest friends. Who Throws the Shower? Typically the bridesmaids and the maid of honor throw a shower for the bride; however, anyone may throw a shower. Some etiquette guides frown upon a member of the bride’s family hosting the bridal shower; however, this is changing. Often the grooms family or friends of the bride may throw a shower for the bride or for the couple.

Page 11: The Organized Bride

When Do You Host a Shower? A shower can be hosted any time during the engagement period, but the most common time is one to three months before the wedding. Any closer than one month to a wedding and the bride may be too overwhelmed by the upcoming wedding to take the time to enjoy herself. Where Do You Host a Shower? You can host a shower at a variety of places, from your home to a nice downtown restaurant. It is up to the mood of the shower, as well as the type of event the bride would prefer. Some great places to have showers are: tearooms, old homes, and private room in a restaurant, a spa or a park. Be creative, there are so many unique places to host a party, just be sure to make it comfortable and fun! Who Do You Invite? The best thing to do is to ask the bride for a list of guests she would like at the party! That way you don't forget about someone, or you don't invite someone the bride didn’t invite to the wedding. If the shower is going to be a surprise, try asking the brides mother for suggestions. It is also important to invite the grooms mother and sisters. Typically, it is bad etiquette to invite anyone to the shower who isn’t invited to the wedding: however there are some exceptions. If the bride is having a small wedding, and there are people who aren’t invited to the wedding, but have expressed an interest in coming to a shower then it is acceptable to invite them.

SHOWER THEMES Lingerie Shower: Have guests bring anything for the bedroom; this can range from bathrobes to candles to lingerie! For favors for the guests have little sachets or mini-bubble baths. Kitchen Shower: Guests bring gifts for the kitchen! Also have guests bring their favorite recipe and start a recipe book for the bride. Around the Clock: Assign each guest a time of the day, then have them bring a gift that can be used during that time. This can range from kitchen, to bedroom, to electronics. Honeymoon Nights: Assign guests a different theme for each night of their honeymoon. Guests then bring things to fit that theme. Example: Hawaiian Theme-bathing suit, leis, & pina-colada mix.

Page 12: The Organized Bride

Couples Shower Themes BBQ: Have a backyard grill out and have guests bring gifts related to grilling out. Tailgate Party: If the couple is a big fan of a certain football team have everyone bring tailgate items, ranging from tents, to chairs to a cooler. Stock the Bar: Assign each guest to a type of alcohol to bring to help stock the couple’s bar.

YOUR TINIEST PARTY MEMBERS Flower Girls How do you choose? Your flower girl should probably be a young girl, usually under the age of 10. Oftentimes, brides choose family members such as sisters, nieces or cousins. You can even choose to honor a friend of the family or a daughter of a close friend. It can also be a great way to include the groom’s family members in your wedding party. You can even choose to have two flower girls go down the aisle together. That way, they give each other moral support! What is her role? Your tiny party member walks out after the bridesmaids and before the bride scattering the aisle with flower petals along the way. You may want to prepare her before she makes her debut. There are some great books about being a flower girl that can be found in your local bookstores. Let the parents know what their role will be during the ceremony. A good idea is to have the parents sit in the front row, so the little girl can see them on her walk down the aisle. Then, when she reaches the end, you can choose to have her sit with her parents, or remain standing with the rest of the party. What should she wear? Most of the time, the flower girl wears a white dress with a sash that matches the bridesmaid’s dresses. Another popular choice is to have a mini-version of the bridesmaid dress created. Most bridal shops will have books you can look through and choose from, or you can hire a tailor to make the dress. Ring Bearers The ring pillow The ring bearer is a special member of your party, who is usually a male about three to eight years old. In the past, the ring bearer would carry the rings on a pillow tied

Page 13: The Organized Bride

down with a ribbon for the groom to remove before giving to the bride. Nowadays, the ring pillow usually carries faux-rings to represent the real ones, while the Best Man holds the real rings safe in his pocket. Where do I find a teeny tux? You tux rental store can usually provide a rental of the groomsmen’s attire in a tiny, ring bearer version. You can also check children’s clothing stores and department stores, as they will also have a selection.

A “THANK YOU”FOR YOUR MAIDS & MEN

Your bridesmaids and groomsmen have invested a lot of time and money into your special day. Show your appreciation with a handpicked gift!

For the Maids Between hosting bridal showers, your bachelorette party, attending pre-wedding events and purchasing a bridesmaid dress your attendants have invested quite a bit of time, as well as money into your wedding. A nice way to show your appreciation is with a gift. These gifts vary depending on your personal taste. Often a bride gives all the bridesmaids the same gift, but you may chose to personalize it by choosing something unique to each bridesmaid. These don't have to cost you a fortune either. Some gift ideas:

Cute personalized totes in your wedding colors Monogrammed towel wraps Spa gift certificate Jewelry Cosmetic Bags Picture frame (with a pic of the 2 of you inside) At home mani/pedi kit

For the Men While the men are usually less involved with the wedding process, they still pitch in quite a bit, too! From helping plan the bachelor party to overall groom support, these guys are the ones that your groom depends on. Some gift ideas:

Personalized travel/bathroom kit Flask/bar accessories Cufflinks Cigar box & cigars Pocket watch Cooler filled with treats

BACHELORETTE PARTY

After months of planning the Bride has earned the chance to let loose with her girlfriends and party. The bachelorette party represents a send-off for the bride from her friends into marriage, one last, “Hurrah!” The bachelorette party is hosted by the bride’s closest friends, typically her bridesmaids.

Things to Consider Keep in mind the wishes of the bride. Not all brides want a crazy night out with strippers and drinking, some just want a quite night with their closest friends. Decide who will be paying for the night, the Bride should NEVER have to pay for any activities at her party. The hosts may split the cost, or often they will ask all attendants to pitch in a set amount. Pick a date. Choose a date that is a few weeks before the wedding. There is nothing worse than a puffy and tired bride on her wedding day. Transportation: Be sure to arrange for transportation to and from all bridal events. Consider hiring a limo; the cost may not be too bad when split between all guests. Another idea is to recruit groomsman to be your “chauffeurs” for the evening!

Themes: The most fun bachelorette parties have a theme. What other time can you dress up in silly outfits in public? Themes can range from simple to more elaborate. Some theme ideas: 80s wedding, Vegas Nights, or Country Club Wives. Fun & Games: No bachelorette party is complete without games. These range from “Who knows the bride best,”games you can buy, to creating a list of things the bride has to do before the night is over. Have fun & be creative.

Page 15: The Organized Bride

POSSIBLE PARTY THEMES Sex and the City Party: Dress to impress and take over the town. Start the night by meeting at one location and then take a limo to a chic, uptown bar for some cosmopolitans. Stock the limo with music and champagne for a drive through the city before hitting some of the best hot spots Spa Day Party: For the more low-key bride plan a spa day either by making a “at home spa” or booking a day at the spa. Include champagne, lunch, facials, mani/pedi’s and more pampering treatments. Scavenger Hunt: Make a list of crazy and random items that have to be found around town, not bought. Divide into two teams or more, each with a video camera to document the fun. First team to collect all items and meet back at one location wins. Afterwards, spend a night playing bachelorette games and celebrating. Weekend Get-Away Why keep your party to one night? If schedules and finances permit, plan a beach, mountain or Vegas weekend with the girls.

Bridal Shower ONE STOP SHOP

A bridal show can be the one stop shopping experience you need to plan your entire wedding if you go prepared and are ready to get the job done. Here are a few tips on how to get the most out of your local bridal shows.

Dress for the Occasion. Remember to wear comfortable shoes. There is no doubt that you will be doing a lot of working. Fashion Forward. Bring a notepad with you to jot down any dresses you like during the fashion shows that will surely take place while you're there. Jot down the names of the bridal shop so that you can visit their booth after the fashion show. Take Notes. Often the day can pass in a blur unless you take copious notes about which vendors you like and want to revisit of schedule an appointment with. Make a note of any bands or DJ you hear performing if you like what they are playing. Get ready to win. Often times, the exhibitors will have drawing boxes available for you to enter to win prizes.

Sign up for a Wedding Email account. When you go to bridal shows many vendors will ask for your contact information. These vendors will then use that to notify you of any deals and specials that they may run. But not all vendors are good about updating their lists of contacts. So you may get stuck with getting these emails long after you're married. One way around this is to sign up with an email that you use with only planning your wedding. Many sites like MyBrideMail.com offer free accounts to brides, but once you are married, you can cancel it.

Label, Label, Label. To avoid having to write your name, address, phone number, wedding date 100 times, it is a good idea to have address labels made up with all your contact information, including your phone number and email. Most local print shops can do address labels quickly and inexpensively.

Page 17: The Organized Bride

Find a sitter. Its going to be a long day for the little ones, so save yourself some headache and find a sitter for any kids. If a bunch of you were to go in together on a single sitter, not only could your kid have a play-date with their friends, but it will be cheaper for all of you.

Research. Many show sites post who is going to be at the upcoming show. If you still need a cake, use the show as a free tasting. If you want to hear a band play before you hire them, head over to their booth. If you research ahead of the show, you can also get a feel for what vendors you want to look for, and have a more organized and efficient game plan.

Enjoy it. Remember just because you can get your shopping done in a single day, at a single show, doesn’t mean you should. There are likely more shows in your area at another time, or make sure you pick up a show program so that you can look up the contact information that you need.

The important thing to remember is that the show is there to assist you in every aspect of planning your wedding. When you take advantage of a bridal show, you can plan major parts of your wedding in just a few hours.

The Bride A BLUSHING BEAUTY

TAKE A DAY OFF! Every once in a while, give yourself a day to just relax and enjoy being with yourself, free from the stresses of work and wedding planning. Catch a movie. Eat a meal out…whatever makes you happy! Think about your amazing fiancé and why you are getting married.

TRUST THE EXPERTS You hired them for a reason! While its tempting to start meddling and get involved, you will be a much happier and healthy bride if you let the pros do their job and you get some much needed rest.

DON'T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF When the big day does arrive, there will inevitably be some, shall we say, snags. Don't get too overwhelmed by this. Things will not go perfectly all the time, and when they don't, remind yourself what its all about. Its not about the shade of your bridesmaid dresses matching the centerpieces, its about your future as husband and wife! So relax, enjoy, and get ready to be Mrs. Groom

THE DRESS Start shopping for your wedding gown early! Most wedding salons only have a limited number of, “off the

rack,” dresses available; and most brides order their dress. A dress typically will take a minimum of 4-6 months to arrive; longer if you choose a European designer. Decide on a budget: Don't forget to factor in all of your accessories from your veil, shoes, lingerie, and jewelry. They will add extra cost to your dress. Also remember that many gowns will need alterations, which will also add to the cost. Make an appointment: Try to take time off during the week to begin your hunt. You will get more of the salespersons time and attention than you would on a busy Saturday. Only invite one or two people along; To many opinions will make the decision-making difficult. Allow the salon consultant to make suggestions. Consultants know the dresses and can help you select styles that flatter your best features and camouflage the flaws. Be upfront about your dress budget! Don't be afraid to speak up about what you do and don't like about the gowns you're trying on. If you have to be reassured that the dress looks great on you, it’s probably not the one. Is this how you pictured yourself looking as a bride? If not, take it off and move on. Keep your wedding location in mind when selecting your bridal gown. Although you want to end up with the dress that you always dreamed of, you also want to make sure that it is appropriate for the kind of wedding you are planning. Chose a shade of white that will best fit your skin tone. Even after you think you’ve found your gown, take a day to be absolutely sure it’s the one for you. Since bridal gowns are custom made, most salons put a no-return policy in their contracts.

Page 21: The Organized Bride

Don't forget about lingerie. Once you’ve selected your gown, ask your consultant for recommendations for appropriate undergarments. Be sure to bring these items to your dress fitting.

SILHOUETTES The task of wedding dress shopping can be very overwhelming with the thousand styles, fabric and designer available. The good news is there are 7 basic silhouettes that make up almost all wedding gowns, and more than likely, at least one will be flattering on you.

Page 22: The Organized Bride

SHOPPING FOR ACCESSORIES SHOES: Have fun with your shoes. While some brides may want to wear a classic white shoe under their gown, don't be afraid to have fun and try something different such as a metallic silver or gold shoe. A little less traditional might be red, blue, or animal prints. Practice walking in your shoes during the weeks leading up to the wedding. Be sure to choose a comfortable shoe. You will spend a lot of time on your feet at your wedding, and it is not the time to experiment with four-inch-heels when you usually wear flats! VEIL: Veils come in a variety of size, style, and fabric; ranging from simple to elaborate – ask your wedding gown consultant to show you a variety of styles to try. Try on a veil, even if you don't plan on wearing a veil. Many brides choose to wear a veil during the ceremony, and take it off or change into a shorter veil for the reception. Be sure to bring a fabric sample of the dress to match the veil color to. Although your veil does not have to match your dress exactly, it should compliment it. HAIRPIECE: You can choose to wear a hairpiece regardless of whether or not you wear a veil. Veils can be attached to your headpiece, or attached separately. Headpieces may be simple or embellished barrette, or even a tiara. They work well with a full up-do or even a half-up, half-down hairstyle. JEWELRY: Keep your jewelry simple. You don't want your jewelry to be too elaborate, it should not take away from you or the gown. Many brides chose to wear a family heirloom of their wedding jewelry may be a gift from the groom. If choosing to wear a necklace be sure it is flattering to the neckline of your gown. Timeless jewelry consists of diamond studs, drop earrings, or a strand of pearls.

Page 23: The Organized Bride

GOWN PRESERVATION Now that your big day is over, you will want to get your gown cleaned and preserved for safekeeping. Even though you’ll only wear your wedding gown once, you probably wont want to part with it after your big day. Consult an expert: In order to keep your dress in good condition, you’ll need to have it professionally cleaned and preserved. More than likely, your wedding dress wont be pristine and spotless after your wedding day. It will have stains, wrinkles, and sweat marks that will settle into the material permanently if it isn’t cleaned promptly and properly. Many dry cleaners can provide the cleaning services you need for your gown. After your gown is cleaned and pressed, you should store it in a box to prevent further soiling. Gown preservation specialists sell special boxes with a window so you can see your gown. Looking forward: Once your dress has been preserved, it will be in perfect condition for years to come. When you decide to pass on your dress to your daughter or granddaughter, it will be stunning, just like it was the day you walked down the aisle!

Once you have found your perfect dress it is time to place an order. Most bridal salons require 50% deposit on all dress orders. Discuss with the bridal consultant how they schedule fittings and what they may change to alter your gown.

Do NOT order a gown smaller than you currently need, even if you plan to lose weight, gowns can always be taken in. For a small bust or added support discuss having cups sewn into your gown. If your gown requires a bustle be sure to have your maid of honor or mother bustle is once of twice with the bridal consultant assistance. This will ensure that someone will be available to bustle your gown for you on your wedding day.

Cakes THE SWEET JUST GOT SWEETER

Today’s cakes are as varied as today’s brides. Whatever you choose will be a reflection of your personality. The average wedding cake consists of three-tier: 12”, 9”, 6”; or 15”,

10”, and 6”, and serves about 125-150 people. You will find that prices generally range from $2 to $20 per slice depending on the elaborate nature of your cake.

FINDING YOUR BAKER Begin your search at least six to eight months before the wedding. Look at a portfolio of cakes they have created, paying attention to the execution of design and making sure their work is clean and well presented. Taste samples of their cakes (either by personal appointment or on a special evenings reserved for couples) Know your budget before talking to potential bakers. Know how many guests you will need to serve. When meeting with cake designers, visually check to make sure their business license and health department certificates are posted. Inquire as to the number of wedding cakes they do per month and whether their cakes are ever frozen.

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN THE CONTRACT Details of the cake layer shapes and dimensions Filling and icing flavors and colors Description of decorations Cake topper Number of servings/guests Delivery date, time, location, and set-up If using fresh flowers, confirm exactly who will produce and place them Confirm that all services are included in the final contract price TIP Make sure you schedule time for a tasting! Many shops will offer dozens of flavors and having a tasting will be the easiest way to narrow down what kind of cake you want!

Page 30: The Organized Bride

Customizing Your Cake

Flavor Chiffon –a light sponge cake, best complemented with fresh fruit and mousse fillings. Genoise – a classic French sponge cake; somewhat dryer and crumblier than Chiffon; works well with heavier, denser fillings. French Croquembouche – a tower of pastry cream puffs, covered with a web of spun sugar. Other choices – sponge cake, cheesecake, butter cake, devils food cake, pound cake, fruitcake and carrot cake

Filling Buttercream Ganache Flavored Mousse Custard or pastry cream Fruit jam Fresh fruit

Finish Buttercream Consists of sugar, eggs, and real butter (not shortening) Color ranges from ivory to pale yellow, depending on the number of eggs, the color of the butter, and whether meringue has been mixed in for whitening Also used to pipe out beautiful, realistic flowers Mixes well with liqueurs and other flavorings Fondant Either poured in liquid form onto small cakes and petit fours or rolled out in a sheet, cut and wrapped around the cake Has a smooth, alabaster-like sugar finish Can be used as a cake covering and to make attractive, editable decorations such as bows Refrigeration is not only unnecessary but also unwise because it tends to weep/sweat and form beads of moisture Ganache A chocolate and cream mixture used as a cake filling and sometimes as a glaze

Page 31: The Organized Bride

Marzipan A decorative paste made from ground almonds and powered sugar Can be rolled like fondant to cover the cake or used as a base for the fillings between the layers Can also be hand-molded into editable realistic looking decorations such as individual fruits, bunches of grapes or small figures. Gum Paste Sugar paste material often used to make hand-shaped, botanically correct flowers complete with stamens and pistils as well as other cake decorations. Royal Icing Consists of egg whites beaten with confectioners sugar and lemon juice, then piped with a pastry tube to make intricate decorative elements, such as piped lace trellises or miniature buds Very sweet Hardens quickly Modeling Chocolate A mixture of chocolate and corn syrup that results in a firm, pliable texture Can be run through a pasta maker to create ruffles, ribbons, etc. White or dark, it can be rolled out like fondant and used to enrobe an entire cake or to embellish a frosted cake with bouquets of chocolate flowers

Catering MAKE IT A FULL AFAIR

One of the most significant aspects of planning your wedding will be the food you serve at your reception. Not only will you want a delicious menu that pleases you and your guests but roughly one-third of your overall budget will be spent on the food alone. A good caterer will be delighted to create a menu to suit your palate, and can give you a solid advice as to what food items work well together. If you are in a position to select your own caterer, try to narrow your list immediately to no more than three. When calling each caterer, have as much information ready as possible – your wedding date, time of day, approximate number of guests and degree of formally and style. If you have any general menu ideas or preferences, let the caterer know so they can be better prepared for your initial meeting.

FINDING A CATERER

Be prepared: At the initial meeting, caterers generally like to discuss your food preferences and budget. Have an idea of your guest total and what your catering budget will be.

Know your options: Sit-down meal, buffet, passed hors d'oeuvres or food stations. Your caterer will be able to describe all of these options in detail and their appropriateness for time and day, crowd size and style.

Sampling: Find out when you will be able to sample to caterers cuisine. You’ll want to make sure that you like the meal before you agree to spend the money.

VENDOR MEALS Although it is not required, you may consider including meals for wedding-related personnel, such as the DJ, musicians, photographer and wedding consultant. If cost is an issue, ask your caterer about “vendor meals. They are more casual than the guest menu, and are offered at a lower cost per person.

THE CONTRACT Ensure that your catering contract details all of the particulars of your reception. Specify: day, date, time, address of the site, food items by course and the number of guests covered, provisions for special meals, time of the cocktail hour, time the meal will be served, contact people, including someone from your end with whom the caterers can contact, the number of servers, bartenders and their uniforms, linens,

Page 40: The Organized Bride

beverages to be served and bar guidelines and terms of payment and liability insurance. Typically an advance deposit is due and you’ll definitely want to check on the cancellation policy barring unforeseen events. There are many details involved in planning the food for your reception but with a little advance planning (and tasting) your reception will be long remembered of its delectable fare.

CATERING – ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS

Are bartenders provided?

When does overtime go into effect?

What will the staff wear to the event?

Will the staff collect plates after mealtime?

Does the price include cutting and serving the cake?

Page 41: The Organized Bride

Are you familiar with the reception location?

Will you need access to their kitchen facilities, if available?

When will you require access to the site?

What are the terms of payment? The deposit? Balance due?

Are taxes and gratuities included? If not, how much?

Dance Lessons STEPPING TOGETHER

A romantic way to prepare for a lifetime of waltzing together is to take dance lessons before your wedding. You and your partner will be the center of attention on the dance floor during your special day, but if that isn't incentive enough, consider the additional closeness the two of you can develop by sharing a wedding-related activity that doesn't involve appointments and interviews. Below are the steps to getting started. Think about the type of dance you would like to perform for your first dance as husband and wife. Fox Trot? Salsa? Waltz? Tango? List your top 3 choices: _____________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Pick your song-make it a short one. If it’s too long, you’ll get tired and your guests will become bored…keep it short and sweet! List your final song choice: _________________________________________________________________ Practice your song on CD. You can often find different versions to practice to if you don't have the recording from your band. Once you learn the final moves from your dance instructor, practice as much as possible at home. Write your practice schedule here: ________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ For a truly finished performance piece, plan your start and your finish. Your instructor will help you with the details, but if you practice a great ending and a great beginning, everything in between will come together. Finally, plan for the unexpected. Once you're out there, there's no turning back. Have a great time…even if you miss a few steps. Chances are, no one will notice, and you'll come off looking like the pros you trained to become!

The Groom THE MAN OF THE HOUR

Your wedding day is filled with so many things “bride" from the day the bride-to-be gets that perfect ring slipped on her finger until you say “I Do.” But let’s not forget about the other 50% of the happy couple. While it may seem like everything is centered around the bride, these days most wedding planning is usually done together (as it should be, right?) But don't fret, grooms, because we have you covered. As the wedding day approaches and the bride labors over the smallest details of her dress, makeup, hair and accessories, the groom may think his sartorial choices to be straightforward and simple, requiring merely a black tie and tux for the momentous occasion. Not so. Although his options of attire may be slightly more limited than those of his lovely brides, governed more by tradition than fashion, he will still need to make a few important decisions. We have outlined a groomswear guide to familiarize the man of the hour with the different styles, etiquette and classic tradition of men's formalwear. As long as you have a basic knowledge of you’re the event, the right groomswear shop will point your gentlemen in the right

direction.

GROOMS FORMALWEAR

Wedding formalwear can be separated into four basic categories, each with its own distinctive style: very formal, formal, semiformal, informal. The time of day you ceremony is held will strongly influence the level of formality, in turn influencing the attire. Other considerations such as the overall color and theme of the wedding will also play a part in the final selection of formalwear.

What is your style?

VERY FORMAL

Morning weddings are often considered to be very formal events. Suggested attire is the long-jacketed

morning suit with gray waistcoat, striped trousers, top hat, gloves, spats, and for the truly debonair – a

walking stick. Some modern men opt to wear a complimentary silk tie instead of the traditional ascot or

striped four-in-hand tie. Very formal evening weddings call for white tie and tails – black swallowtail coat

and trousers, with a white pique vest, shirt and white bow tie. Black top hats and white gloves are

optional.

FORMAL

Afternoon weddings fall into the formal category. For this occasion the groom and groomsmen don the

classic black tie or tuxedo. Also appropriate are white or ivory dinner jackets, worn with black pants

trimmed with grosgrain or satin ribbon, a bow tie, and vest or cummerbund.

SEMI-FORMAL

Here is where tradition gives way, ever so slightly, to fashion. Tuxedo or dinner jackets can be livened up

with a dash of coordinated color in the tie, vest or cummerbund, and suspenders. Tuxedo jackets come

either double-breasted or single-breasted and in a variety of lengths and silhouettes. If you really want to

make a statement, some formalwear stores now offer a colorful variety of jackets and vests in brocades

and other textures.

INFORMAL

A navy or dark gray suit is perfectly appropriate for an informal wedding. Also attractive and equally

suitable is a navy blazer with neutral-colored trousers. The fabric should be appropriate to dress in the

same color, and ties can complement the bridesmaids’ gowns.

Wedding Guest List When it comes to determining your guest list, you should first make a list of those people whom you absolutely have to or want to invite. Then, make a list of people you'd like to invite, but don't necessarily need to. We call this the “A” list, and the “B” list. Some brides will send invites to the “A” list a little early, and then when the responses come in, they will make up for the “A” list no’s by sending invites to people on the “B” list. This helps ensure that all of the people you needed to invite get invited, and the others can make up the difference for those who decline.

Officiates WHO MARRIES US?

One of the most important decisions you will make is who will officiate your wedding. For couples who don't yet have a place to worship or are having an interfaith ceremony, finding the perfect officiant can be a difficult task.

The Perfect Match

Some people choose to get married in a church they grew up in, so there is an obvious choice for the wedding officiant – their home church's pastor or minister. However, sometimes this person is unavailable to officiate your wedding. Other times a couple may choose to get married in a different church in a different city or outside or at a different facility, so other options are available.

You will want to decide as a couple who will perform your wedding. Decide early on whether you would prefer a religious or a secular ceremony. Your wedding services should be a reflection of your relationship and the love you hold for each other. The right officiant will talk you through the process and help you with all the important elements of the ceremony.

Do you want to write your own vows? Is one of you divorced? Will you want reading or elements from a particular faith included? Will you be combined traditions? All of these questions are things you will need to decide as a couple, and the right officiant will guide you along the way.

Once you have selected your officiant and your ceremony structure, you can relax in knowing you have taken the time and thought into creating the perfect ceremony as a reflection of you as a couple.

Photography CAPTURE THE MOMENT

The decisions you make while planning a wedding are all important but few are as important as choosing a photographer. Don't skimp on photography; rather plan a larger budget for this service. Your photographs will be one of your most significant ways to capture and remembering the special moments of your wedding day. Before you start interviewing potential photographers, sit down with your fiancé and ask these questions: Which photographic style best fits out personalities and taste: traditional, which are the standard posed shots; or photojournalistic, a new approach of storytelling that offers a comprehensive view of your wedding with little or no posing? Do we want color photographs, black and white photographs, or a combination of the two? What is our budget? Do we want any engagement photos or bridal portraits? Are we planning on hiring a photographer for the rehearsal dinner? How many hours will I need my photographer? (Include pre-wedding while getting ready, wedding party and family shots, ceremony, reception, cake cutting, bouquet and garter toss, your departure) When do we want to have our pictures taken – before or after the ceremony? Does my ceremony/reception location have restrictions on photography? If you're planning on outdoor pictures, do you have a back-up plan in case of inclement weather? Do we want a package of prints or do we want to be able to print the photos ourselves? Do we want a professional album for our families or ourselves? Tip – Ask your photographer to do a walk through with you at the ceremony and reception site. It will allow them to see the lighting and get ideas for pictures to take.

Rental Worksheet Whether you're looking for décor for a shower or party, the ceremony, or the reception (of course) your party rentals company can help you with all f your rental needs! Get organized, first, and the process will be a breeze. Your ceremony and reception location will determine what you need to rent based on what is provided by the venue. Many reception facilities provide everything you will need for your wedding all the way to the dance floor. If your reception site does not provide you with anything except for location some things you will need to consider renting are: linens, chair covers, tables and chairs, tents, dance floors, fountains, plants, props and theme decorations. Rental costs vary greatly depending on your selection. Determine your budget ahead of time and decide what is most important to you, and make compromises based on that. Perhaps a personalized dance floor is important to you, so you have to go with a basic chair with a slipcover instead of a more ornate chair. Shop around to a few different rental companies to compare prices as well as see the selection of rental items available. A god rental company will be able to assist you in determining how many rental items you will need to accommodate all of your guests comfortably. It is important to find out in advance the delivery, set-up, pick-up and payment policies are from the rental company, and how they will coordinate with your reception site.
