By Jessica MackinSomething old, something new,

something borrowed, something blue. Let’s start with the old. How about a $9000 Vera Wang ball gown for just $1800? And the good news is, it’s only been worn once.

In recent years many websites like www.preownedweddingdresses.com have popped up allowing brides to sell and buy used wedding dresses. The savings on designer gowns is astronomical.

Another option is the site www.tradesy.com. Select the look you’re going for, whether its sexy or traditional, casual or modest. Just put in your size and style preference and viola! your dream dress awaits.

The site www.oncewed.com will also show you the percentage you save on each dress. A $1700 Maggie Sotero “Lexie” dress on sale for $599 is a 65 percent savings, not too bad!

The Knot, every brides go-to online guide, suggests www.NearlyNewlywed.com as its editor’s pick. In addition to those already mentioned above, they also suggest www.StillWhite.com for finding your dream dress.

So, if you’re not looking to spend a small fortune on the retail priced

gown in a boutique, or battle the other bargain hunting brides at the sample sale, check out some of these sites.

Plus, with the average Long Island wedding price tag at $50,000 ($88,176 in Manhattan!), we are sure you will be able to find somewhere to put the savings.

Before you complain about how much money you (or your dad) spent on your wedding, consider what the Royal Family shelled out when Prince William and Kate Middleton tied the knot.

Care to guess? One million (bucks or pounds)? Wrong. Five? Not even close. How about $34 million – really. How, you ask, could a simple wedding ceremony and reception cost that kind of money? No one said it was simple, dahlings.

The flowers, for example, went for $800,000. The venue was Westminster Abbey, though the royals probably got a discount. The cake, at $80,000, cost more than Kate’s wedding dress, which came in at a very reasonable $70,000 all things considered.

It must have been the most expensive royal wedding ever, right? NOT! When Prince Charles and Lady Diana tied the knot the cost, in adjusted dollars, was $115 million – now that’s lavish.

Speaking of royalty, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West can spend money with the best of them. The couple flew guests to the Palace of Versailles in France -- for a rehearsal dinner! According to Forbes, the next day the dynamic duo flew everyone to the actual event at an undisclosed location in Italy.

When Mariah Carey said yes to music exec Tommy Mottola in 1993 it came with a few minor requests . . . like a Vera Wang ivory silk confection tailed by a 27-foot train. The songstress wore a diamond encrusted tiara . . . she had 50,

Over The Top: Opulent Weddings

count ‘em, 50 flower girls. There was a boy’s choir on hand at Manhattan’s St. Thomas Church to serenade the lovebirds. Hell, the ceremony lasted almost as long as the marriage!

Within months the marriage was beginning to fall apart – but not before Carey had hubby build her a little waterfront place in North Haven. (Well, actually it’s a garish mansion but who’s counting?)

It’s nice to have that little extra special on your big day.

When Liza Minelli married David Gest they chose “Unforgettable” for their first dance – and brought Natalie Cole in to sing it.

When Tom Cruise asked Katie Holmes to marry him (the poor dear said yes) Cruise secured Georgio Armani himself to design not one but two gowns for her.

When Tori Spelling got married Wolfgang Puck catered the food - literally! (Rack of lamb was the main course, by the way.)

It’s not only glamorous show biz types who shell out big bucks for their weddings. Chelsea Clinton, who we think more of a bookworm type, spent $600,000 for air-conditioned tents erected for the occasion in Rhinebeck, NY. The median price of a house in Rhinebeck is $297,000: why didn’t she buy an air-conditioned house or two?

Then there are the weird ones. Jeroen and Sandra Kippers, of Brussels, Belgium, were lifted up on a platform by a crane 160 feet in the air for their

wedding ceremony, took the vows, and then plunged headfirst off the platform with a bungee chord attached to one ankle.

You might remember April Pignataro and Michael Curry: the bride wore a white wetsuit and the groom wore a traditional black one as they tied the

knot - inside a 120,000 gallon shark tank to take their vows at Atlantis Marine World in Riverhead.

Jill Stapleton, of Proctorville, Ohio broke the Guinness World Record by enlisting 100 bridesmaids for her 2010 wedding, but she skimped on flowers: each bridesmaid carried only one rose.

By Emily ToyFor those couples that prefer a

smaller, more low-key venue to tie the knot, Indy has the inside scoop of where to do so, and to do so fashionably. Here’s a roundup of some smaller places sure to make your nuptials impeccable:

Right here in the Hamptons, there

Say ‘I Do’ Intimately In Style

are tons of restaurants, inns and hotels where “the question” has been popped more than once.

• In East Hampton Village, the elegant and refined, yet cozy, 1770 House (631-324-1770) has hosted several instances of excited grooms

popping the question in the firelight parlor, in the intimate outdoor garden, and right at the table. The lavish locale, comprised of six rooms, a dining room, a downstairs tavern, and a two-bedroom suite in the two-level carriage house, has also hosted a few weddings and receptions, both indoor and out on the dining patio. Located at 143 Main Street East Hampton 11937.

Right down the road, The Palm at the Huntting Inn (631-324-0411), located at 94 Main Street, has been hosting receptions and ceremonies for decades. Indy’s own Ricky Murphy and Karen Fredericks got married there nearly 20 years ago.

Other East Hampton favorites include The Maidstone c/o The Living Room (located at 207 Main Street), which is a boutique hotel with a Scandanavian-inspired menu. And The Hedges Inn (631-324-7101), just across the street, is a quaint 1880s guesthouse with a vintage feel, and old-timey wooden bar and lush gardens around the property. Arts & Entertainment Editor Jessica Mackin tied the knot in the gorgeous garden, located at 74 James Lane, a couple years ago.

• Seasons of Southampton (631-283-3354) offers several wedding packages for groups ranging from 25 to 250, with its newly restored venue in the village of Southampton. The traditional and formal or the unique and unexpected, all Seasons of Southampton events are anything but common. Located at 15 Prospect Avenue in Southampton 11968.

The Southampton Inn (631-283-

6500) is another petite place to set a dreamy wedding. The Tudor-style hotel is half a mile from the village and just over a mile from the beach. Located at 91 Hill Street Southampton, 11968.

• Nestled in the North Fork’s Wine Country, check out The Vineyards in Aquebogue (631-722-3200) as the premier spot for a simple, elegant affair in an exclusively private setting. The Vineyards is located at 978 Main Road (Route 25) Aquebogue 11931.

• Always dreamed of a wedding on the beach? 360° East at Montauk Downs (631-483-5025) offers ceremonies by the sea, with a breathtaking backdrop with panoramic views of Montauk while overlooking an 18-hole golf course. Experience timeless elegance at the Fairview Avenue location, sure to be a one-of-a-kind wedding.

Also in Montauk, couples should check out Star Island Yacht Club & Marina (631-668-5052), a low-key locale with an onsite restaurant and waterfront views.

• In Riverhead, Hotel Indigo East End (631-369-2200) offers everything from weddings, receptions, and rehearsal dinners to wine and spirits tours, brunch, engagement parties, and bachelorette and bachelor getaways. Located at 1830 West Main Street (Route 25) in Riverhead 11901.

• Oceanbleu (631-288-8878), a Westhampton Beach hotel and marina, offers seaside ceremonies as well as wedding packages and catering exclusively by Robbins Wolfe Eventeurs. Located at 231 Dune Road, newlyweds can enjoy full resort amenities and guest accommodations.

“Honey, we bettercall Sag Harbor Floristfor our wedding flowers now.

Gurney’sSerene, graceful, and set against the

incomparable backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean, Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa provides an unforgettable location for wedding ceremonies and receptions in Montauk, any time of year.

As the only four-season resort on Montauk, Gurney’s is available for weddings and special events (bridal showers, engagement parties, even bachelorette weekends!) all year round.

This summer the resort unveiled a highly anticipated food and beverage experience, in partnership with LDV Hospitality, meaning you can now select your favorites from celebrated restaurants like Scarpetta, American Cut and Dolce Italian, for your wedding whether on the beach, in the ballroom, or in the new Scarpetta Beach dining room.

Beyond the ballroom, couples can take advantage of various set-ups across the property grounds including cocktails by the fire pit at The Regent Cocktail Club. For smaller affairs, the hugely popular Scarpetta Beach provides award- winning culinary options.

This holiday season, Gurney’s added an outdoor ice skating rink - the perfect spot to pop the question and a

unique activity for groups and bridal parties to enjoy during the wedding weekend. Warm up after your skating session at the cozy Regent Cocktail Club and enjoy a cocktail by one of two fireplaces while gazing out at the Atlantic.

Is a barefoot wedding on one of the widest, most pristine private ocean beaches in the world, with the soothing sound of the waves crashing in the background your fantasy? Gurney’s can make that dream a reality. They boast two breezy decks - perfect for intimate ceremonies and receptions in warmer months. Or, if you’d prefer an elegant indoor ceremony, the beachside banquet hall can accommodate up to 220 guests. And, nothing is more magical than capping off your unforgettable day with a true beach bonfire.

Welcome To Our Best of Issue!

You are holding in your hands just a tiny sample of some of the features, articles, columns, and pictures

presented in The Independent this year. We’ve been doing it for a long time now – 22 years. We’ve always

been guided by the same principles: try to give our readers the most balanced news coverage, the most

entertaining features, and comprehensive listings and coming attractions. It all comes bundled in a full

color publication – yes, every single page – that is brought to you free of charge and available at over

400 outlets across the entire East End.

WE FORGOT THE TOILETS!

Planning the perfect outdoor wedding can be a daunting proposition. Thereare so many details that it’s easy to overlook something. So here’s a bit of advice: If you need to rent toilets, book them as early as possible. During the spring and summer, luxury rest room trailers tend to be booked up, and you may not be ableto get the kind of unit your guests deserve. And when you shop for toilets, call Norsic. We have the most reliable service, the most choices and the best main-tained eet of luxury rest room trailers on the east end...and beyond.
