COLOR ME MARRIEDTwo Local Artists Bring The Coloring-Book Trend To Wedding Celebrations

think “wedding,” and you’ll surely think “flowers.” Now add the word “coloring,” and make it “coloring flowers.” For a memorable celebration, make both part of your plan.

Coloring for adults has never been more popular: In spring 2015, two adult coloring books were among

Amazon’s bestsellers. While adults are probably consciously just thinking about taking

a break from their glowing screens when they turn to coloring books, subconsciously they could be boosting their logic-building skills (all those color choices!) and reducing their stress levels (that blissful, lose-yourself focus!)

Both of those benefits can help brides-to-be, grooms-to-be, in-laws-to-be, bridesmaids-to-be, attendants-to-be and even guests-to-be as the Big Day approaches—or arrives—and stress builds.

Two local artists are making it easy for you to realize the benefits of coloring:

Fort Eustis artist Angelika Parker offers free coloring sheets on her Facebook page, Art Love Passion. The first sheet featured flowers.

“As I post pictures of my work in progress, followers get to see the early

stages of my designs,” says Angelika. “They asked if I would ever consider making coloring sheets or a coloring book. I knew it was time to get to work and make my fans happy.”

While waiting for her first book to come out, which will be about 30 pages and feature dogs, Angelika offers free coloring sheets every few weeks.

In may, Newport News artist Karen Long Freidt published her sec-ond coloring book, Brilliance: The Wisdom of Coloring, after quickly selling out of her handmade coloring books last year. The book, avail-able at www.freidt.com for $25, features 12 original illustrations filled with cheerful whimsy on high-quality, thick white paper. It’s spiral bond so that each sheet lies flat and is easy to color.

“After sharing some of my illustrations with adult friends and see-ing them enjoy coloring them so much, I decided I needed to create a book to share,” Karen says. “I love seeing people reconnect with their childhood memories and getting lost in the meditative, calming state that coloring can bring about.”

Crayons, however, might disrupt calmness: They’re usually too thick for the fine lines of adult coloring books. Karen and Angelika recom-

mend their favorite colored pencils, Prismacolor Premier.“They have high-quality pigment for a rich color

saturation and soft cores that are ideal for blending,” explains Angelika.

—Kristen De Deyn Kirk

1. Place coloring sheets or coloring books at each table at the bride’s shower, along with colored pencils, and ask guests to color throughout the shower.2. Present the color-ing books to bridesmaids as a “be my maid” gift or af-terwards as a thank you. (Karen Long Freidt offers personalization for large orders of her books, in addition to prints up to 24-by-36 inches that can be colored and then signed by the wedding party; and similar bags, personalized gifts tags

and personalized wine labels.)3. Family and friends each color one

flower from a coloring sheet, glue the sheet on cardboard, cut it out and create a unique bouquet for the bride.4. The bride and groom color a sheet during

the reception and keep it as a reminder of the first thing they did together as a married couple. 5. Present a coloring sheet or coloring book as a thank you gift at the wedding. Colored

sheets could be returned to the bride and groom, framed and used to decorate their first home.

Whether you’re a make-up maven or prefer a more natural appear-ance, one thing’s for certain—your makeup should look

impeccable on your wedding day. many brides go the professional route

when it comes to makeup application sim-ply because they want to ensure that they’ll have a flawless look they’re going to love, with makeup that’s going to last through hours of happy tears, dancing and hun-dreds of photos taken throughout the day.

If this isn’t an option—say if you’re plan-ning a destination wedding and don’t have access to a makeup artist you trust—or if you’d rather invest in your own products, the best alternative is to learn to do your own makeup. And luckily, there’s now a local place to do that.

The makeup school by sarah Rillon opened in Virginia Beach near Hilltop last spring, offering makeup and hairstyling courses inside a bright and chic space. Founder sarah Rillon has been a freelance makeup artist for 15 years and was a mAC Cosmetics manager for 11 years. Along with providing her own bridal makeup services, Rillon teaches a course titled makeup for the Bride, a 1–3-hour, hands-on session where she teaches brides to

do their own wedding day makeup, giving application tips and product suggestions along the way.

Rillon starts by learning the bride’s vision for the wedding (vintage, classic, country, etc.) and the style of the wedding dress, jewelry, shoes and other accesso-ries. “Then I’ll have them tell me what their everyday routine is and what they’re going for, whether it’s more natural or more dra-matic,” Rillon explains.

one key question she asks is whether brides are more concerned about their photos or how they’ll look in person. “People don’t realize that the way makeup translates in photos is so different than it does in person,” Rillon notes. “A lot of times you have to wear a much heavier applica-tion for it to show in photographs.”

After the session, Rillon provides clients with a list of products used and an overview of the makeup steps, ensuring brides will feel confident to achieve the look they desire.

The Makeup School by Sarah Rillon is located

at 620 Village Dr., Suite D, Virginia Beach. Rillon

also offers bachelorette parties and girls’ night out

events, hosting up to 20 ladies. (Minimum two

hours.) Call 757-672-9300 or visit TheMakeup-

SchoolSR for details and pricing.

DIY Makeup Application

1. Invest in the products and the tools. For your wedding day, you want quality products. If you can’t invest in everything, at least invest in the face—your foundation, concealer, powder and the brushes to apply it—because nothing will look good if your face isn’t put together.

2. Know what your focus is—whether it’s your eyes, your lips or all of the above. Determine what your main con-cern is with your makeup for that day.

3. Do your research and have the correct product knowledge in the products that you invest in. There are a lot of products in the market that aren’t meant for flash photography, or they’re not meant to be worn in certain types of photographs, and if you’re not mindful or well versed in those areas, it doesn’t matter how great the product is—you’re just going to look a mess. so make sure you’re well informed on the products you’re choosing for your wedding day.

Wine with FRienDsCrystal Palate Offers Options For More Upscale Bachelorette Parties And Showers

Move over Magic Mike, more and more Coastal Virginia brides are skipping the club in favor of upscale, wine tasting bachelorette parties and showers. “Many brides

are trading in the shot glasses for wine stems,” says Crystal Cameron, a certified sommelier and president of Crystal Palate. She founded the wine consulting service in October 2013, after a successful career in journalism.

The process begins with a complimentary consultation and a short quiz. Cameron asks 10 to 20 questions to learn the bride’s palate, including food preferences. “Asking a simple question, such as ‘Do you take your coffee with cream and sugar?’, can help me gauge the tannin levels someone might prefer,” Cam-eron says. Brides may have an idea of what they like, but Crystal Palate would like to guide them towards unique wines from regions they may never have considered.

Next the bride selects a theme. One of the most popular is “Cupcake and Corks,” which features five cupcakes paired with matching wines. In “Bubbles Around the World,” Cameron teach-es guests the difference between a $15 bottle of Prosecco and $150 bottle of Champagne. Each packages is customized. “We will work with a couple to tell their story through food and wine.” For example if the couple is planning a honeymoon in Tuscany, a “Taste Of Italy” flight may fit the bill. “We want the couple’s family and friends to learn about them through their wine experience.”

The actual party is a two-hour wine education and sensory analysis, led by Cameron. Each flight includes five wines expertly paired with cheeses, charcuterie or hors d’ouveres for 10 to 30 guests. There are three packages available: Silver, with wines retailing from $15–$30; Gold with $30–$50 wines; and Crystal, featuring $50–75 wines. Brides can pick the setting of a private home, restaurant or even hotel. The flat rate fee includes food, wine, tasting notes and personalized folders for the party. “One of the best parts is that guests are together in a safe environ-ment, and there’s no clean up for the host. We provide the stemware, dishes—even the cocktail napkins.”

Once brides begin to understand the importance of wine, it can lead to consulting services for the big day. Cameron works with Tinto, a wine shop at Hilltop in Virginia Beach. That relation-ship provides her access to hundreds of wines at discounted prices. “People can get some really good wines, if they’d just dare to drink ‘outside the box,’” she says.

CLOCKWISE: CAkE: “I heard about the idea of a ‘naked’ cake from Pinter-est, and it really made sense for us because I don’t really like frosting, and we try to eat fairly healthy,” Chelsea explains. “Plus, I thought it really added to the rustic theme.” Chelsi Davis (a current student at stratford university’s school of Culinary Arts) made the cake.

WEDDinG PrOGrAMS: Chelsea de-signed the programs herself and found the rustic display container at michaels.

LEAVE A nOTE: Chelsea loved the idea of using a vanity as a station for guests to leave their sweet wishes for the bride and groom. she borrowed the typewriter from one of her bridesmaids. “The love notes made it a cool, interac-tive part of the wedding,” Chelsea says.

FLOWEr GirL: Chelsea’s daughter Emma participated in the ceremony as a flower girl. “she loves the at-tention, the flowers and the pretty dresses,” Chelsea says.

says. “most 21-year-old guys’ idea of the perfect relationship probably isn’t falling in love with a single mom. Jake’s relentless love for not only me but also for my daughter and the commitment he made to us without a doubt proved to me he was the one I wanted to spend the rest of my life with.”

MEADOWbrOOk: “We looked at quite a few places, but meadowbrook had everything we wanted,” Chelsea says. “We had a beautiful outdoor area for the ceremony and a huge barn for the reception. The owners were very accommodating and didn’t restrict our creativ-ity at all.”

briDESMAiDS: Chelsea found the different hues of bridesmaid dresses on Etsy (shopRenzRags). Wholesale Flower market in Chesapeake provided all the flowers used in bouquets and décor. TiME CAPSULE: During their ceremony, Chelsea and Jake placed a bottle of wine and a love letter written by each of them (which neither have read the other’s letter) into a wooden box. They plan to open the box on their fifth wedding anniversary—when the traditional themed gift is wood. Fallen star Couture (on Etsy) engraved the box. hAY bALES: The hay bales for guests to sit on during the ceremony came from Lee Irving Farms, Chesapeake. CEnTErPiECES: The couple’s good friends cut up a tree on their property for the wood slabs to hold the centerpieces as well as apple and pumpkin pies. Jake’s parents shellacked them, and Chelsea’s aunt decorated them with ribbons. Chelsea’s mother made the table numbers. FAVOrS: Chelsea found the wash bucket stands at sam’s Club and stacked the stands with jars of chocolate-covered espresso beans for guests to take as their favors. Catering: Tina’s Tasty Catering, Chesapeake. Wedding Coordinator: Angela Gray. Rentals: Grand Rental Station. Music and Lighting: Deandre Coke

Who: Monica Huett, web developer for Operation Smile, and Philip Malmgren, work leader marine electrician at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. When: Dec. 13, 2014. Where: Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center, Norfolk. Guest List: Approximately 150 guests attended the celebration, mostly traveling from East Coast states, some from Michigan and a few from England. Where They Met: The two were set up on a blind date by mutual friends. The Engagement: An avid Christmas lover, Monica started a tradition with Phil to gather their families each year to attend Christmas Town at Busch Gardens. “With a group of 20, every-one wanted to do different things,” Monica recalls. But her sister, Kaitlyn (the only person in the group aware of Phil’s plans), insisted that everyone have their pictures taken in front of the big Christmas tree first. Once it was Monica and Phil’s turn to have their photo taken, Phil took her hands and told her how much he loved her and that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. Then he got down on one knee, revealed the most stunning ring and asked “the four words every woman dies to hear,” Monica says. She excitedly said yes. “In those moments I forgot we were surrounded by a crowd until the shouts and applause be-gan,” she says. Wedding Wishes: Monica says the main factor in setting the theme for their wedding was the date: 12-13-14. And since the date was in December, it seemed natural to plan a winter wonderland. “I had visions of white and snow and sparkle and sophistication,” Monica says. What’s Next: Monica and Phil are excited to welcome a little baby boy—Gunnar Lucas Malmgren—into their family this fall.

Décor: Distinct Event Rentals provided the silver tablecloths on guests’ tables and clear chairs for the ceremony and reception. Fluttering Flowers, Chesapeake designed the centerpieces—half with tall branches and drizzling crystals and half with smaller poufs of white flowers. Each table was adorned with glitter-covered votives and faux snow.

SnowflakeS: Each guest took home a white porcelain snowflake as their favor. “They were the perfect blend of our theme and my love for Christmas, as they’re also ornaments,” Monica says.

with ringS on her fingerS anD Shimmer on her toeS: For Monica’s engagement ring, Phil chose a 2-carat cushion center diamond, with 1 carat of smaller diamonds between a split shank and halo from Jared, The Galleria of Jewelry. “I knew it was the perfect ring to say, ‘I love you and I want to spend my life with you,’” Phil says. Monica found her Swarovski crystal-covered sparkly ballet flats on Etsy and asked her bridesmaids to also pick a pair in whichever color they wanted. “It was a unique way to allow each of my girls’ personalities to shine,” she says.

I knew I had to make her mine on the drive home from our fourth date,” Phil remembers. “I love every moment I spend with her. She supports me in ways I never knew possible. I couldn’t imagine a moment without her in my life and by my side.

Something Blue: After Monica’s grandfather passed unexpectedly in 2013, she knew she wanted to honor him in a special way at the wedding. She took one of his favorite ties, cut it into the shape of a heart and had it stitched to the lining of her dress, Monica says, “so that he would be with me at all times on my special day as my ‘something blue.’”

lightSaBerS: Phil asked Monica to sneak the Star Wars theme in wherever she could. She surprised him by having guests display lightsabers for them to walk under as she and Phil entered the reception and as they exited. The Star Wars theme song also played proudly.

glaSS act: During the ceremony Monica and Phil combined pieces of glass from two separate vases into one. Later, they had the glass blown into a beautiful unity sculpture, as well as an ornament and paperweight for their families each to have (UnityInGlass.com). They rented the sequined sweetheart tablecloth from Graceful Designs.

a water View: One of two items on Phil’s wedding wish list was that he wanted a venue on the water. The Half Moone was at the top of their list and luckily hadn’t been booked yet. “It was perfect and meant to be,” Monica says. mr. anD mrS.: Monica found the cake topper on Etsy. “I wanted the cake to stand out on its own since it was so unique and wanted something to just complement it and add a little sparkle,” she says. cake PoPS: Unique Sweets & Accessories in Virginia Beach provided the adorable display of cake pops for the reception.

A fter planning and executing my dream wedding, I imagined that

whatever followed would pale in comparison, but I’m so glad to

say I was wrong. My five-day honeymoon across Virginia wine

country at the height of the fall season was the most incredible

way my new husband and I could have capped our wedding celebration.

Jake and I took off on our adventure on Sunday afternoon. First stop: Lexington.

Family friends had graciously given us the use of their amazing hillside home as a wed-

ding gift, so we “checked in” there early Sunday evening. We woke up bright and early

the next morning to enjoy coffee and breakfast on the huge wrap-around porch.

The first winery we hit was in Fishersville, halfway between Lexington and our next

destination, Harrisonburg. Fortunately, we arrived at a very quiet time and were some of

the only tasters during our visit. We tasted a wonderful selection of wines before taking

our favorite, the Red Barren, up to the second-floor terrace to enjoy. We sipped happily

on the semi-sweet blend of Chambourcin, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot as

we took in the gorgeous vineyard view.

Before moving on to Harrisonburg for the evening, we stopped for lunch in nearby

Staunton. It was a treat wandering around downtown, poking our heads into antique

shops and local jewelry stores, before finding a local lunch spot. We decided on The

Pampered Palate Café, a cute little two-story lunch restaurant with delicious, fresh op-

tions and prices that make a newlywed couple breathe a sigh of relief.

By late afternoon, it was time to head off to our next destination. We arrived at

the Stonewall Jackson Inn and were warmly greeted by friendly staff, including owner

Wayne Engel, then shown to our room. We had booked the premiere suite, the

Stonewall Jackson Suite, located on the second floor of the restored mansion. After a

nice dinner and some craft beers at Capital Ale House down the road, we came back

to the room for a relaxing couple’s massage. Needless to say, we had a miraculous

night’s sleep. In the morning, we had breakfast outside on the porch, and the staff was

kind enough to put up with our dietary preferences and made us a special gluten-free

breakfast on request.

After spending a little longer relaxing at the inn, we made our way to Stephens City,

where we would be staying our next night at the Inn at Vaucluse Spring. It was drizzling

a bit as we approached the inn, but we were still utterly blown away by the beauty of

the place. Several beautiful lodgings speckled the estate, alongside dozens of huge,

colorful trees, all surrounding a limestone spring. Right away we met Neil Myers, our

accommodating innkeeper, at the lovely historical Vaucluse Manor House, where we

would be having the special Dinner with the Chef that evening. Our night would be

spent in the Gallery, a separate cottage at the end of the estate, where the inn’s former

resident, artist John Chumley, showcased his exquisite realist paintings. We had no

problem settling into the Gallery, a cozy, two-story cottage with a lovely view of the

adjacent countryside, a big, comfortable bedroom and the most inviting bathroom of

our stay so far.

Dinner with the chef was exquisite. We had a five-course meal in the intimate din-

ner room with one other couple. The chef was extremely friendly and knowledgeable,

offering perfect wine pairings with his delectable dishes and explaining the ingredients

and strategy behind each course. Jake and I both consider this lovely evening to be

one of the most memorable highlights of the trip.

Our final destination was Middleburg—horse country. After a peaceful drive past

dozens of extravagant estates and bright green pastures, we made our first stop in

Middleburg at Greenhill Winery, where we encountered my favorite wine of the trip. We

tasted several wonderful, creative wines, but the 2013 Superstition won me over. The

wine is a blend of 80 percent Mourvedre and 20 percent Tannat and is aged for nine

months in French oak barrels. Smoky and aromatic, graced with the sweet flavors of

cherries and blackberries, it’s a truly exquisite red wine.

After purchasing a bottle of Superstition, we were off to see our accommodations.

We headed into Downtown Middleburg, a quaint little town full of shops, cafes and

restaurants. Our bed and breakfast, the Middleburg Country Inn, was situated toward

the end of the downtown strip. Our friendly innkeeper, Jo Ann Hazard, greeted us and

showed us to our room, the Mount Vernon. Located on the top floor, the elegant room

boasted a gorgeous four-poster bed, a reading space with a chandelier, a fireplace

and a kitchenette. We capped off our evening exploring downtown Middleburg and

had a pleasant dinner at the Red Horse Tavern, which was probably the most popu-

lated place we encountered while in quiet Middleburg.

In the morning, we indulged in yet another wonderful breakfast, home-cooked

by Mrs. Hazard. Prying ourselves away from such a lovely place seemed criminal,

but it was the last day of our journey, and we had one winery left. It was a bright and

sunny afternoon when we arrived at Chrysalis Vineyards. After a fun tasting with a lively

presenter, we selected the 2012 Viognier, a delightfully dry yet fruity and aromatic wine

that is fermented sur lie and aged in French oak.

If we were going to make it home at a decent time, we had to say farewell to

Middleburg and be on our way. We made one last stop in Fredericksburg for a late

lunch at The Bavarian Chef, where we filled up on delicious German fare and reflected

on our first few days of marriage. We’d been wined, dined and cared for so extrava-

gantly in just a few days’ time, and all within five hours of our home in Coastal Virginia.

As our first anniversary approaches, we’re more than ready to make our way back to

Shenandoah wine country. With the warmth and hospitality we received everywhere we

went, I imagine it’ll feel a lot like visiting old friends.

some Brides Aren’t AFrAid to Admit they hAve A Bit oF A nerdy side....

In fact, they want to celebrate it. This subtle, Green

Arrow-themed shoot combines comic books and classic

romance.

“You might miss the nerdy stuff if you don’t know

the back story, and that’s okay,” says Misty Prewitt,

shoot stylist, coordinator and self-proclaimed nerdy

girl. “Because sometimes personality in weddings is

just about showing things that are important to the two

of you—that only the two of you know.”

The floral arrangement had an actual arrow forged

through the middle of it, along with the groom’s bouton-

niere. Chair backs with his and hers arrows on them

gave a nod to the Green Arrow’s weapon of choice and

a playful romance between the bride and groom.

“I wanted to find a way to combine the modern look

of black and white and the romance that comes with a

wedding, so we threw green in there as well,” says Pre-

witt. “For a little added bonus, we brought my black

and white Boston Terrier, Molly, to roll in the woods

with our bride and groom to make everyone smile.”

A RoyalRomance

Old-World Elegance Lures Us In At Bacon’s Castle

Photography by Ross Costanza Photography, RossCostanza.com

We can’t help but agree with the adage that romance never goes out of style, so we fell in love with the idea of an old-world wedding with a few modern touches.

Ultra feminine gowns embellished with soft lace galore, fanciful pearls and gorgeous, glittery beading looked down-right dreamy juxtaposed against the backdrop of rustic Bacon’s Castle in the Suffolk countyside. The oldest brick dwelling in North America turns 350 this year, and its vin-tage, antique details and traditional English garden would make any bride feel like a princess, no matter the century.
