Editorial

It was July of 1955 and Helen Galantiere Edited Vol. 1 No. 1 of the Jagazette. She resigned in October, and Luella Berry

became the Editor, and did the November and December issues. The club did its first tour to Yosemite National Park, attended by ten Jaguars. These are the humble beginnings of our fabulous club. Since that time there have been dozens of Editors, and I am sure that the form and substance of the Jagazette has changed considerably. There were only 25 Charter Members present at the founding meeting. Today we are averaging around two hun-dred members annually. You probably wonder why I bring this up. They made the mistake of giving me Larry Cooks “Fifty Year History of the Jaguar Associate Group”, I suggest that you get a copy, I find it entertaining and informative. It makes me proud to be associated with this club.

Please check out our Event Calendar to find the activity that best suits your particular taste. We have dozens of events this year and we aren’t done yet!

I heard that Jeanne Ramos had fallen while visiting Southern California recently. We wish her a speedy recovery. You may want to send her a get well card (you can mail it to Roland Quintero). Our prayers are with you Jeanne.

Richard Halk, Editor

President’s Message

Ok, please bear with me; I have a lot of information that needs to be dealt with. When I returned home from our

Tech Session with Bacchus British Service, I went to my garage and started My XK8 which has the transmission out. I couldn’t believe my eyes the transmission was good as new. While at Bac-chus I spoke to Bernie Stein and he agreed to sell me his 1963 fully restored MK2 for two thousand dollars. The Board of Di-rectors held a special impromptu meeting and all of the board meetings are going to be held in Placerville. (April Fools)

Now the real message: We have had three events so far this year and there has been a tremendous turn out. Thank you for helping to take the pressure off of me, since I feel guilty for having all of the fun. A special THANK YOU to Lew and Faye Edwards for doing a bang up job with our Tech Session at Bacchus British Service.

We have a special treat coming up on April 13th with our spe-cial guest Kevin Nelson who will tell us all about his newest book “Lunches With Mr. Q”. Mr Kjell Qvale is expected to be there as well. There will be a book signing following lunch. Also in April we have the Jelly Belly Tour on the 27th, this is a chance to bring out the young people who will be the future of this or any club. The only requirement is that they have a family member who is an ac-tive member enrolled in the club. Let your family know.

On a final note, I want to send out a SPECIAL “get well” to Jeanne Ramos and to Dudley Smolen. We hope that they have a speedy recovery and are able to rejoin our events; they have been missed by many.

SEE YOU ON THE ROAD!!!Richard Halk, Editor/President

Lunch With Kevin Nelson

We have the privilege of getting to meet Mr. Kevin Nelson the au-thor of nineteen books, the latest one being Lunches With Mr.

Q. It is the story of a young immigrant named Kjell Qvale (pronounced Shell Cavale) who grew up on the West Coast and became the largest auto importer on the West Coast. I’m sure that you will find him and his presentation extremely interesting. I personally can hardly wait to go to Half Moon Bay on April 13th to meet him personally. We will be doing a short drive. Mr. Qvale and his companion Rita will be joining us, if he is feeling up to it; they accepted our invitation.

We will assemble on the Northwest corner parking lot at 2200 Sand Hill Rd. Menlo Park Ca. at the intersection with Branner Dr. starting at 8:30 A.M. leaving time of 9:00 A.M.. We are sorry for the early hour how-ever it is necessary to meet our timetable for the lunch. If this is too early, you can go directly to the restaurant. Jelly Belly Tour, April 27

Next we are having our first Rally, on April 27, that is geared for the younger set. We will take the Jelly Belly Tour and

have lunch in the café on premises or you can pack a picnic lunch. Then travel to Benicia to the Railroad Museum for the tour. This tour is open to anyone at any age, so bring the chil-dren, grandchildren or great grandchildren. As long as you have a person in your family that is an active member of the Jaguar Associate Group. Bring the children out and show them that Jag people have a lot of fun, maybe they will grow up to join the club.

We will assemble in the parking lot at Jelly Belly Factory at 10:00 A.M., the tour will take about a half hour, after which there are photo opportunities, a café and gift store. After lunch we will drive to the Western Railway Museum at 5848 Hyw. 12 in Suisun City.

Saturday morning, we meet at the dock & board a jet boat for a wild ad-venture up the Rogue River. We will ride 104 miles round trip, stopping for lunch along the way. Last year, the weather was spectacular. Saturday evening, we’ll have dinner at Spinners Restaurant and head home on Sun-day. Breakfast is included at the hotel. Page 6 goodwood Revival

From $4099

Join Susan Muir, two-time past president of the Los Angeles Jaguar Club and 2010 co-chair of Western States, for a tour to the Good-wood Revival. It is the world’s most popular historic motor race meeting and the only event of its kind to be staged in the romantic time capsule of the Fifties and Sixties. As well as recreating the golden era of motor sport, the Revival offers exceptional wheel-to-wheel rac-ing around a classic circuit.

The Revival relives the glory days of Good-wood Motor Circuit, which ranked alongside Silverstone as Britain’s leading racing venue throughout its active years between 1948 and 1966. During this time, it hosted contemporary racing of all kinds, including Formula One, Goodwood Nine Hours Race & the Tourist Tro-phy sports car race.

Now, for three days each September, the circuit stages a historic race meeting for the kind of cars and motorcycles that would have competed at Goodwood during 1948-1966. The circuit echoes to the spine-tingling bark of golden-age Grand Prix cars, thundering sports and GT cars, as well as historic saloon cars and little-seen Formula Juniors. But the Reviv-al is far more than a series of races for historic cars: it is a magical step back in time and a chance for visitors to revel in the romance and theatre of motor racing as it used to be. The lovingly restored circuit is unchanged from its heyday. Many visitors wear period clothing and no modern vehicles are allowed.

Day 1 Fly to London (IFM) Fly overnight from your home city to Lon-don Heathrow airport.

Day 2 Arrive London / Coach to Salisbury (IFM,D) We arrive London this morning where our deluxe motorcoach transports us to the Brooklands Motor and Aviation Museum where we’ll enjoy a specialist’s tour. There are lots of “firsts” that happened at Brook-lands. In 1907 Brooklands Motor Course opened as the world’s first purpose-built motor-racing circuit. Many of the original buildings from the early racing era are still standing and have been restored—the Edwardian Clubhouse, the original pad-dock workshops, tuning sheds and petrol pagodas of the 1920s and 30s. In 1909 the first public flying demonstration in Brit-ain took place there in a Henry Farman biplane. Many other firsts ensued, in both motor racing and air records. Following our visit to Brooklands, we’ll make our way to Salisbury, England, where we’ll check into our 1st class hotel for 4 nights.

Day 3 Full Day Goodwood Festival (B) Today and tomorrow we attend all the festivities associated with the Goodwood Revival. Our deluxe motorcoach will take us to the estate of the Earl of March for the festival. Jaguar should be well-rep-resented in the Earls Court Motor Show, along with a display of many of the fastest cars in the world. You may choose to re-ally get into the spirit and dress in period costume. Our Goodwood ticket includes Grandstand best (Chicane & Woodcote) seats. Lunch and dinner will be on the Goodwood grounds on your own.

The event will be held at the Stanley Dollar Clubhouse in Rossmoor. This was formerly a residence of the family of

Stanley Dollar, the shipping magnate. It is in Rossmoor of Wal-nut Creek, which lies in the beautiful Tice Valley, and is a 2200 acre retirement community with approximately 10,000 resi-dents. Tech session at Bacchus British service

March 16th. could not have turned out better thanks to Lew and Faye Edwards fine planning and the weather being

great. Thirty eight members show up for what turned out to be one of the most informative events we have ever had. The tech-nicians at Bacchus were both friendly and knowledgeable. Their hospitality went far beyond sensational, I had heard Lew, Roger and Bernie rave about Bacchus for several years and now I know why. I will be taking my XK8 to them for a transmission repair soon. A big thank you to the staff at Bacchus for a job well done.

As we left to go on our drive over to Garre Vineyard and Win-ery for lunch, we got our directions from Lew, on the way down to Dublin I had lost my reading glasses. As we weaved our way through the very heavy traffic we were separated due to the traf-fic lights. Now I find myself in front of four Jaguars that needed a leader, so since Lew wasn’t anywhere in sight and since I couldn’t see the instructions because of my glasses, I decided to fall back on my natural born leader instinct and since the lemmings that were following me didn’t mind the cliff that we were headed for, off we went. We did find a very curvy road which the Jags enjoyed, finally the group had had enough and replaced me, it is very difficult to hold your head up when you have to submit to such humilia-tion. Once we got to the winery I had recovered a little. Howard is such a good friend since he reframed the situation and de-clared that if we were in time for

lunch we really weren’t late or lost. (I did hear some grumbling about impeachment?)

The members in attendance were: Bill Puskas, Roger and Laurie Colton, Phil and Diane Lanum, Karl Klemmer, Rich Cerefice, Ac-tive Life Members, Lew and Faye Edwards, Vice President, Paul Petach and Susan, Vice President, Gordon Cumming and Sharon Thygesen, Ken and Ann Bilodeau, President/Editor, Richard Halk, Kathy Peterson, Caroldean Shinnick, Treasarer, Phil Endliss and Barbara, His Honor, Roy Swearigen and Rose, Ron Pinnella, Ac-tive Life Members, Bernie and Sis Stein, Andre and Pauline Man-tha, Immediate Past President, Howard Smith and Director at Large Dorothy Smith, Anwar Virani, Jack and Jeanne Wickware, Les Hamilton, Secretary, Bill Baum, Bob Jacobson and three non members George, Steve and John Phirippidis.

I would like to extend a very large THANK YOU to Lew and Faye Edwards for another great event. They always do and excel-lent job. Also Thanks to Dorothy Smith who hosted the shopping side trip event.

Page 12 Half Moon Bay Crabfest

Half Moon Bay Crabfest – Take Two

As I reported in the February edition of the JAGazette, I ran into a little difficulty with my Series II XKE on the way to

the crabfest and car show event at Half Moon Bay. You may re-call that my throttle linkage somehow became entangled in the center clasp of the bonnet under heavy acceleration which, in turn, held the throttle wide-open. This resulted in over revving the engine well beyond 6,000 RPMs.

I am happy to report that after a thorough examination of the engine, including pressure testing and a visual review of the in-ternal components of the engine with a borescope, the damage done was fairly minor. As my mechanic noted, these engines were built for racing and historically ran up to, and beyond, 6,000 PRMs

and ran at these speeds for hours. Granted the production version 4.2litre was not race equipped, but a newly rebuilt engine, such as mine, should be able to withstand several minutes of high RPMs without ill effect.

After several days in the garage and a new set of valve springs, timing chain adjustment and a retimed/adjusted distributor, my XKE returned to the road.

I look forward to motoring “adventures” (strike that) motoring “events” with you throughout the 2013 “touring” season….

Page 13El Dorado Hill Climb

El Dorado Hill Climb“Placerville”

Every year on Memorial Day weekend I organize an informal trek into the hills surrounding the town of Placerville. I usu-

ally have one or two of my friends join me. This year I thought that I would open it up to club members that might enjoy seeing where gold history was made. The trip is between 100 and 150 miles and takes most of the day to complete. We take along a picnic lunch and finish with a simple ranch style evening meal at the historic BOB Ranch (formerly the Gordon House built in 1852) in Placerville.

Our event will leave from BOB Ranch, 2151 Lotus Rd. Placer-ville, CA. at 9 A.M. on Sunday the 26th of May. For those wanting to spend the night, the Quality Inn and Suites in Cameron Park, CA. offers a group rate around $60.00 per night and includes breakfast (the phone number is 530-677-2203). We will arrive back at BOB Ranch around 6 P.M. for dinner. This is a non-sanctioned event, we go whether we have one car or more. We always have a great

A BUSY SUNDAYThe first Sunday of the month came around on March 3rd

and the warmer, brighter days heralded signs of spring. Jer-ry Mouton had organized a meet and drive on this bright and sunny day.

Jerry's meeting coincided with the 1st Sunday of the month which is the Silicon Valley, EuroSunday event. I decided to attend both events and so, at 8am I arrived at the meeting point on Al-pine Rd, Portola Valley. I was the 3rd car to arrive and found a Ferrari and Maserati waiting. In quick order a variety of cars ar-rived and joined the ensemble. Some notable vehicles were a UK Ginetta (with a license plate of “Real Ale”), a Maclaren F1, a Beck Spyder and Porsche Spyder, a variety of Ferraris, Porches, Audis, one authentic AC Cobra and one reproduction Cobra. As usual, cars arrived and departed on their own time table and the crowd included passers by, bicyclists and even the staff of the local coffee shop. After hearing about the club's upcoming track day and some planned drives I left around 9:45 and headed off on the short drive up 280 and through Woodside to Alice's.

The drive up to Alice’s and Skyline was tricky given the number of bicyclists laboring up Route 84 and the number freewheeling down at breakneck speeds.

I was the last to arrive at Alice’s and found 5 E Types there al-ready. Jerry waved a friendly greeting and I joined the table to meet the other E Type drivers and their companions. Attending were

Jerry Mouton in his white ‘64 FHC, Ray Livingstone and his wife Peggy in their cream '64 OTS, Steve Poff in a beautiful gold ‘63 FHC, Jim Horvath in his immaculate BRG OTS and Bill Gardiner of Hollister with his daughter Christie and their Maroon 2+2.

After the serious business of ordering brunch we had great dis-cussion about, you guess, E-Types while enjoying the morning sun. We were only interrupted by the arrival of food and Jerry having to move his car so that the chef could get to his car. The E-Types gen-erated lots of interest from the motorcyclists, other car owners in the area and some young boys who obviously appreciated real cars.

After settling up our tabs, we assembled the cars and drove off south down Skyline. Steve Poff had to head North and so we had 5 E types in formation cruising South along Skyline Blvd. The slower pace meant we could enjoy the splendid views of the countryside. When we arrived at the junction with Highway 9, we dispersed and each headed back towards home.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable way to enjoy a Sunday morning and I hope there is an opportunity to repeat this soon. Maybe we might attract more Jag’s next time.

Editorial Note: “A Busy Sunday” was submitted by Les Hamilton and included several nice Jaguar photos, however we ran out of space them. Thank You Les!

Exclusive: Jaguar Land Rover studying Full Production in india(Editorial Note: Article sent in by Audrey Haines. Thank you Audrey.)

By Henry Foy and Rhys JonesMUMBAI/LONDON (Reuters) - Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is in-

vestigating the potential of manufacturing cars in India, company sources said, as the British luxury carmaker looks to build on its growth in emerging markets with the help of Indian parent Tata Mo-tors.

JLR, which has ridden a wave of surging demand in China and other emerging markets to post record profits over the past year, is “actively exploring the possibility” of building cars from scratch in India, said one company source.

“The idea is being looked into, with the (Jaguar) XF and (Land Rover) Freelander the obvious candidates,” said another source with knowledge of the matter.

The British brands, which already assemble two models in India using parts and engines shipped from factories in the UK, will also begin assembling its popular Range Rover Evoque in the country soon, the first source said without providing details.

Building cars in India, which has developed into an emerging market export hub for many global carmakers, would allow JLR to skirt high import taxes on luxury cars, which the country's finance minister proposed raising to 100 percent from 75 percent in his bud-get speech last week.

“Jaguar Land Rover has ambitious plans to expand its manufac-turing footprint and increase production in markets outside Britain,” Del Sehmar, a Mumbai-based spokesman for the company, told Re-uters. “We continue to examine options to expand our range of lo-cally assembled products,” he said, referring to India.

JLR will exhibit a new 9-speed automatic Evoque and an electric-powered version of its Land Rover Defender at the Geneva Motor Show next week.

iNvEsTMENT DRivEBought by Tata for $2.3 billion from Ford in 2008, JLR has defied

those skeptical of its future under Indian ownership to roar back into profit over the past three years as the main growth driver for its now-struggling parent.

Continued growth in emerging markets such as India and China, which accounted for 22.3 percent of its sales in the December quarter,

is key for JLR as it embarks on an expensive overhaul of its production and product clout. The carmaker is investing $1.7 billion with local partner Chery Automobile Co in a factory in China.

JLR lags rivals BMW AG, Volkswagen AG's Audi and Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz in assembling cars in India, where the luxury market is expected to swell by around six times by 2020 to 300,000 cars a year, according to business consultancy Frost & Sullivan.

JLR, with sleek sedans favored by British prime ministers and lux-ury SUVs born of desert and jungle combat, has factories working around the clock in England to meet demand, bucking the trend of sluggish demand for European automakers.

The company has repeatedly stressed that its overseas ambitions will not lead to job losses in Britain. JLR employed close to 24,000 people at the end of March last year.

Earlier this year JLR started the assembly of the 2.2-liter (0.58 gal-lon) diesel version of the Jaguar XF sedan at a plant in Pune, west India, tucked away in a corner of a sprawling production site where Tata builds its heavy duty trucks and hatchbacks.

Screwed together using engines and components shipped from JLR's Castle Bromwich plant in Birmingham, central England, the company has also been assembling its Land Rover Freelander 2 in Pune since May 2011.

The XF and the Freelander 2 are JLR's best-selling models in India, where it sold 2,288 cars in the year to March 2012, up 157 percent from the previous year.

The carmaker, which warned in January of negative free cash flow next year as it invests in production facilities, is also exploring the feasibility of a factory in Saudi Arabia. After the signing of a deal with JLR in December, the Saudi commerce and industry ministry said the $1.2 billion plant would start making vehicles by 2017.

“At the moment, we've signed a letter of intent to do a study,” Kenneth Gregor, JLR chief financial officer, said last month. “That is and remains a study.”(Editing by Ian Geoghegan)

Page 16 Old West Concours

saloons in the Old West Concours d’Elegance in Chandler, AZ, March 9, 2013By Paul Petach, Vice President

The first Concours of the year, for me at least, started off with rain, bad traffic, rain, rain, greasy roads, cold, rain, mud, rain, cold,

rain, lightning, drizzle, rain, hail, rain, 60+ MPH wind, rain, cold, one to two miles of I-10 closed down due to multiple car/truck smash up’s and in general, 72+ hours of continuous bad/ugly weather.

It was a GREAT week end! Just FABULOUS!

I had spent the previous week cleaning, washing, waxing, polish-ing, buffing and preparing my 1995, White, XJS, V-12, Convertible for the start of the 2013 Concours season at the Saloons in the Old West Concours d’Elegance in Chandler, Arizona. The Jaguar looked good. I loaded my cloths, last-minute cleaning equipment, the fold-ing chairs and tables and everything else that would be needed at the show and started driving to Chandler, Arizona.

So much for the best of plans. Within 20 minutes of being on the road the first rain shower hit. It only rained for about 10 minutes but I quickly realized the weeks preparation work was wasted. It would all have to be done again when I arrived in Chandler. For the next 14+ hours, that is the rest of the trip down I-5 and across on the I-10 would be a repeat of these first 20 minutes. Short intense bursts of rain followed by dry outs and then rain again. It was nice to see that the waxing and polishing had done a good job as evidenced by the beading of the water and how it ran off the hood and fenders while going down the road.

When I finally arrived at the hotel in Chandler, I unloaded the Jag and then proceeded to give it the first of many cleanings that day. I was astonished at the amount of road grease and grime that had at-tached itself to the car. As soon as I finish cleaning and wiping down the car, I put the cover on over the car and went back to my room. Very soon after I finished and got back to my room, another rain-storm came over so then I had to go back out and clean the car again. This process was repeated many times. It was amazing how much dirt could get on the car after each rain squall would pass over. Late afternoon/early evening if finally stopped raining and I was able to give the car one last cleaning and drying and put the cover on for the night.

Saturday morning I woke early and immediately went out to check on the condition of the car. I quickly realized that it had rained again

at least once during the night and that another cleaning was needed. So one more time, out came the bucket and rags. This was getting to be a real chore. While the morning was cold and windy with no rain, washing and polishing the car kept me warm. Registration opened at 9:00 AM and by 9:30 I was registered and had the Jag parked at it’s show spot. Of course at this time a light misting rain came down so that once again the rags were needed to wipe down and dry the car.

Considering this poor weather there was a very good turnout for the Concours. About 45 cars braved the elements to show off their beauty.

It was “Rags Down” at 11:30 AM with judging starting at 12 noon, followed by a light mist rain at 12:30 PM. Occasional light mist rain occurred throughout the afternoon. Judging was finished by 3 PM, most cars were parked back under their covers by 3:30 PM with their owners preparing for dinner at 6 PM.

By 6:30 PM all the owners were gathered at the tables ready for the awards and dinner. The awards were very nicely made glass cacti, quite different from the usual silvery pewter awards. Of course the awards started with the Championship Division cars and seemed to go on and on and on. I wondered if they would ever get to the Driven Division. Finally they announced that it was now time to present the Driven Division awards. Again they started at the beginning with D1 and slowly proceeded through the classes until they finally got to D8 - my class.

When they announced that for class D8 that the 1st Place winning car was my white Jag, I thought I would fall off the chair. Then they announced that the score for the 1st Place white Jag was a perfect 10! Oh WOW! As I said earlier, it was a GREAT weekend! Just FABU-LOUS! All of the bed traffic, rain, grease, cold, rain, mud, rain, cold, drizzle, rain, hail, rain just disappeared. It became an OUTSTAND-ING weekend!

The rest of the dinner was very pleasant and broke up early as most of the owners had a long distance to go to return home the next morning. I left Chandler well before sun up, and safely arrived back home late in the evening.

All in all a very nice start to showing the car in 2013.
