FALL IS HERE!

I trust you’re

enjoying this

beautiful fall as

much as I am. I love moderate days and sun-

shine and we have certainly had those in

abundance.

Each week I am learning more about how our

amazing Senior Center works. The biggest

surprise for me is how much autonomy and

responsibility we members have. Though we

cooperate with Apple Valley Parks and

Recreation in publicizing and participating in

some special events, and though we are so

privileged to have staff who generously share

ideas, energy and resources with us, for the

most part it is up to us as members to con-

ceive and develop new and fresh programming.

It’s exciting and challenging but so rewarding.

A new program launched in October. The

Nonfiction Book Club is the brainchild of Jan

Daker who serves as vice president of the

Senior Center and who developed and admin-

istered the well received and important initia-

tive to engage seniors in HONORING

CHOICES, the Minnesota advance directives

effort. This new book club is a bit different

from most. Rather than coming together to

discuss a particular book of nonfiction, the club

invites participants to come and discuss the

most interesting nonfiction book they’ve

recently read. Our Senior Center library is a

great resource for nonfiction. Everyone is

welcome to come and enjoy the new club.

Please share your ideas for new programs and

activities. I can almost guarantee your

executive committee can and will help you get

them going.

Not new, of course, but so important, is our

Veterans Day celebration which will be

Wednesday, November 10 at 1pm. It’s such a

wonderful time to say thank you to the women

and men who have served in our country’s

military and to also thank their families. This

year, rather than speakers, we are inviting

everyone to share stories about the military -

personal stories and stories shared by friends

and family members. Come and join us and

share your stories.

And then, have a great Thanksgiving!

Book Lovers Alert

Donations:

All of the books in the library have been donated by members. In order to keep the collection current, we ask

that you only donate books that are less than 15-years-old, i.e. a copyright of 2006+. PLEASE don’t drop older

books, because we have to pack them up and haul them away. Please note that “romance paperbacks” should

be less than five years old with a copyright of 2016.

Organization: Fiction hardcover books are organized alphabetically on the right side of the library, while fic-

tion paperbacks are similarly organized on the shelves to the left side. Romance paperback novels are shelved at

the end of the hardcover collection. Look for an assortment of nonfiction organized by the Dewey Decimal sys-

tem near the return counter.

Check-out and Return: Members are free to take any book that appeals to them for as long as they want.

When finished, return books to the plastic baskets on the counter labeled for returns. (Those books can also

be taken out without being re-shelved, if you notice one that you would like there.)

Relax:

As part of a COVID upgrade, our tired, upholstered chairs were replaced by two new, faux-leather chairs. If a

quiet break is needed, enjoy the peace and quiet of our library.

If you would be interested in joining the group that maintains the library, please email

[email protected] and we will set up a “training” session.

SENIOR OF THE MONTH Geri Claytor

Financial recordkeeping is never very far from the conversation for the November Sen-ior of the Month, Geri Claytor. Geri currently serves as the Treasurer for the Apple Val-ley Senior Center, moving to the position from Assistant Treasurer when our treasurer resigned to care for a family member. As treasurer, she maintains the books, pays the bills, reconciles the accounts, and makes sure that monies spent are done in accordance with the group constitution and bylaws as well as standard accounting practices.

Geri was born in New Prague at, as she calls it, the old hospital. Raised in Montgomery, she graduated from Montgomery High School and enjoyed working on the technical/stage crew for the school plays. Now called Tri-City United as a merger between several schools, Geri said she's still a Monty Redbird! She attended what was then the Dakota County Vocational and Technical School, she studied account-ing, then took a position with the school after graduation. Primarily working in the payroll and benefits area, she retired from the school, now called Intermediate School District 917, after 36 years of service! An Apple Valley resident since 1980 with her husband of 44 years, Geri enjoys her involvement at the senior center, whether as treasurer, as a member of Quilting and Sewing, a Bingo money counter, or any of the myriad groups that she joins. Quilting is a particular passion, with a whole family room in their house turned over to the activity. Geri owns 7 sewing machines, so she has all the special ones needed. The pair have 3 children, 4 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren, keeping them busy with family too. Their 30' class A motorhome parked at the Cannon Falls campground has been their way to visit Ohio, Texas, and Iowa on various trips. They love the motorhome idea of no set agenda or destination while seeing where the next road takes them.

Tues., Nov 23 Hoover Presidential Library and Museum Herbert Clark Hoover, (August 10, 1874–October 20, 1964), mining engineer, humanitarian, U.S. Secretary of Commerce and the 31st President of the United States. In addition to public service, Hoover devoted his post-Presidential years to social causes such as the Boys Clubs of America and the Hoover Institution, a research center he had established on the Stanford campus in 1919. He also wrote more than 40 books during those years.

Hoover’s attention returned to Iowa late in the 1950s when he agreed to allow friends and asso-ciates to construct a “Presidential library” near the site of his birthplace. Hoover insisted that the building be modest in size in accordance with scale of the other buildings in the community. The

former President made his last visit to Iowa on August 10, 1962, to dedicate that building to the American peo-ple. Join us at the Presidential Library and Museum to discover more!

You can clap your hands, sing along or even dance if you like. The best part is that it is FREE! If you play a musical instrument, you are very welcome to join us. We are not professional players so don’t be bashful. We rotate play-ing our own individual songs, so you can play up front or play in the background. It doesn’t matter. Just have fun!!
