History - The NZ Sport Horse Promotion Board (NZSHPB) was formed as in incorporated society in 1993 after taking over the functions of the original NZ Sport Horse Breeders & Owners Association – a company first setup in 1987. The focus was changed from a breeding register to a marketing register and unfortunately without significant input from the breeding sector, the NZSHPB faltered and was eventually struck off by the Registrar of Incorporated Societies in 2000 for not filing returns. Since then, the NZ Sport Horse database at least has been ticking over and recording horses but not memberships.

We are starting it up again -- but with the breeders as members playing a leading role in its direction. And we invite you to join with us in creating something special!

The Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI) in conjunction with the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses (WBFSH) runs a competition each year based on points earned by horses in FEI level competitions around the world – eventing, dressage and showjumping. It is the horse - not the rider - that earn the points for their related studbooks. In the last 5 years with the WBFSH, NZ bred horses with NZ riders and other overseas riders would have earned enough points to place in the top 5 studbooks in the world! Our riders may not have brought home the medals but our horses certainly could have!

NZ horses may have dominated the top ranks consistently over recent years but the NZ Sport Horse as a studbook wasn’t registered to compete. Many of our NZ bred horses were listed as pedigree and breed Unknown on the official FEI rankings. What a wasted opportunity to tell the world about our wonderful horses.

You can see a list of these horses that we are trying to track down breeders to update registrations at http://www.main-events.com/nzsh/horses/horses177.htm

We have re-registered the NZ Sport Horse Promotion Board as an incorporated society and are getting back on track with input from the original founders and other major breeders. The organisation aims to turn the NZ Sport Horse into one of the major studbooks in the world for producing sport horses. We need to really work together to get horses registered under one studbook as NZ Sport Horses (dual studbook registration is possible) to get this process underway. The NZSHPB recognizes the importance that various existing studbooks have in producing their unique type through selective breeding programs and this is identified within the register by a prefix to each horse registration – eg NZWB for a NZ Warmblood, NZTB for a thoroughbred etc.

We need a sport horse industry that is thriving and providing the sort of financial returns we all need to keep investing. NZ as a sport horse country is in a better position than ever before to really turn the industry around. Access to frozen semen from top sires overseas has opened a whole new potential to produce better horses from proven popular overseas bloodlines. Even if you are breeding for fun and not aiming for the top, you can still benefit from the information that will come out of the NZ Sport Horse Register – we need you too.

You can see more on the WBFSH website at http://www.wbfsh.org

The whole premise of the new … NZ Sport Horse Register is to get information published so we can all start researching what bloodlines are available, what works with what type of mare and what new bloodlines are

starting to show up. It is a sad fact of the business that many of the top stallions are close to 20 before we “discover” them! The NZ Sport Horse Register and associated website will become an invaluable tool for those serious about producing better horses. We need to work in together with the other major studbooks in New Zealand and use valuable contacts overseas to ensure our horses and their bloodlines are recognized.

The NZSHPB has a professionally developed database system that integrates with the web through published information online. It has been completely rewritten to meet modern information requirements of international studbooks and the WBFSH. Longer term, the web side will become more interactive so that you can register and update horses information online as well as contribute to member discussions etc. All existing NZSH registrations have been transferred to the new system but only registrations since 2009 will be recorded with digital copies of registrations and markings. Older registrations can be updated to the new format on application by the owner.

In summary, we need you on board. We need you to be in to win the WBFSH Studbook Ranking for Event Horses in the near future and the other disciplines longer term! We can backdate registrations and provide dual registration where a horse is already registered with another NZ studbook.

More importantly, we invite you to be part of a new initiative to get NZ horses back in the spotlight again on a world stage! And have some fun sharing information with all those other breeders out there!

An AGM is being planned for April 2009 to elect officers for the coming season.

Why record your horse – the common denominators • Horses in FEI level competitions will be able to start earning points in the WBFSH for the NZ Sport

Horse Studbook right away – for the current 2008/09 rankings.

• Once our horses are back in the limelight, it will encourage more overseas buyers and that will bring about a more profitable industry at all levels – not just for export sales.

• You will be protecting your breeding program, stud reputation and bloodlines through an impartial and open register that documents pedigrees and where feasible links with performance records.

• You can research similar bloodlines to your own by viewing what other breeders are registering.

• You can be involved in Breed Improvement programs planned for the future in conjunction with Dr Chris Rogers of Massey University. These programs will taken into account accreditation already gained through other societies in NZ and overseas. They will be based on performance – not breed.

Registered progeny will be listed year by year.

• As a member, you will get email newsletters and other information of specific interest. You will be able to nominate overseas clients to get free copies of the NZ Sport Horse news focusing on success.

• Your horses will be more visible to riders in NZ and overseas looking for horses to buy based on bloodlines. At any stage in future, your horse can be flagged as For Sale to appear next to its name on website and linked to your email as vendor.

• You will be able to view any change of name or ownership as notified to NZSHPB in future as it will be listed on the website so you can follow what the horse is doing after you have sold it.

• Your horse will be automatically eligible for any special classes, shows or awards that may be organized by the NZSHPB in future.

• Where horse is sold overseas, export documentation can be applied for to ensure as much as possible that you don’t lose track of the horse. Horses exported to Europe and the UK must have registration papers!

• Registrations will include an internationally recognized UELN number for each horse – Universal Equine Life Number – that will stay with the horse for life. See www.ueln.net for more information.

• Proof copies of registration papers and certificates are emailed to you first so we can get it right the first time. No more putting up with spelling mistakes in pedigrees!

• In future the NZSHPB will be implementing a “star” system to highlight top performing horses in bloodlines shown on the website. Similar to “black print” in the TB, this will identify top horses in mare, stallion and sibling pedigrees.

• We will be working with other breed organizations to facilitate dual registrations so that it may be possible to register once on one register and have that information electronically transferred to the other register. There would be a negotiated discount for dual registrations in the NZ Sport Horse Register on that basis. More on this as it eventuates.

Stallion information will be published online with links to their pedigree and progeny. (See notice at end of this brochure).

information published on the website in a standardized format for all stallions and all breeds.

• Your stallion is listed on the website with pedigree and your contact details provided you maintain your annual registration requirements. He is also listed with his registered progeny in a year by year format.

• Stallions foals get a 50% discount on registration fees provided mare is also registered.

• Mare owners listed on Stallion Annual returns will be followed up by email next season encouraging them to register the foal

• As a stallion owner, you will be notified automatically as progeny are registered under the stallion’s name for “confirmation”

• You receive a Stallion Certificate suitable for framing and hanging in the stud office

• You will get a Certificate of Service for each registered stallion pre-printed with your stallions pedigree and registration details to give mare owners encouraging them to register the resulting foal. You can copy them as required.

• Certificate of Registration for progeny will show a 5 generation pedigree instead of a 4 generation pedigree.

• Stallion will be eligible for Breeder Improvement Programs to be implemented highlighting success in competition (more on this later)

When a stallion dies or is exported, their details are kept on the website in the format they were when last registered – eg if fully registered and a one page profile paid for, that will stay without further payment.

• You can also register the pedigree and details of overseas stallions (eg frozen semen sires) on a reduced basis.

• Stallion’s progeny will be eligible for sires bonuses to be implemented in future competitions

• From time to time there will be special offers to be involved with trade displays, breeders shows, export promotions, publications etc.

• Certificate of Registration for progeny will show a 5 generation pedigree instead of a 4 generation pedigree.

• As the Owner/Breeder you will be eligible for Breeder of the Year awards provided both mare and relevant progeny are registered.

• What does it cost? $25 to record a new broodmare. This is a special offer until 31 Mar 2009 from the normal fee of $50. If the mare is already recorded as a NZSH, the fee is $25. There is no annual fee. You must be a full member at $35 to record breeding stock. GST must be added to all fees listed.

Why record your foals and young stock with the Register? • Protect your reputation and bloodlines so that in future as

horses are sold, people can still see your name as the original breeder with address, email and website details. Dual registrations with another breed society recognised!

• You receive a special Registration Certificate which as a breeder you retain for your records. You don’t give it away to new owners because as the breeder, you are the only life long link back to any horse (aside from the NZSH Register).

• Any change of name or ownership as notified to the NZSH will be forwarded to you as the breeder of the horse. New owners are sent a copy of the original certificate updated with their name as the owner and the horse is updated on the website with the new information.

• You can record your full address and contact details on the Registration Certificate (see below) if you want; or just your name and area.

• If you also want to register with another Breed Society you can apply for dual registration and nominate the other registration to become the prefix to the registration number in the NZ Sport Horse database.

• Your horse is listed on website with registration details, sire, dam, sire of dam, breeder and owner details.

PLEASE NOTE – Stallions on existing Website

The information published on the website at www.main-events.com/nzsh/home/indexhome.htm is as of takeover the end of December 2008. Therefore all stallions and memberships are considered “NOT current” so there may be no extended pedigree pages to view. After 2000, very few stallions & horses were recorded

and members records were not updated. There are quite a few gaps!

We are starting fresh in January 2009 with a new registration system. As soon as you register your stallion there will be a hyperlink to a web page with their pedigree and any progeny listed. You can update existing stallion registrations by sending in Annual Mare Returns with $50 + gst and pay a membership of $35 + gst.

Forms on the website. All updated stallions will receive a certificate for framing.
