People’s Desire

Try to improve nationaleconomy making use ofinfrastructures

Now is the time when all-out efforts arebeing made to improve the socio-economy andliving standards of the people. Infrastructuresare also being built for regional development.

We can see signs of significant progresseven in Taninthayi Division in the far south ofthe Union. Dawei and Myeik have emerged asdeveloped regions. Dawei University and MyeikUniversity have been built, and the local youthsare also pursuing higher education atuniversities of computer studies andtechnological universities.

The State has built new roads and bridgesfor better transport that is fundamental toregional development. Dawei-Myeik-Bokpyin-Kawthoung road and Ye-Dawei railroad haveemerged. Along the routes, Kyweku-Kyaukphya bridge, Taninthayi bridge andLayhnya-Mandaing bridge have been built forthe convenience of the travelling people.

Even in Kyunsu that has to rely mainly onthe waterway, the local people can now useinter-town roads and circular roads. OnPahtaw-Pahtat Island in Kyunsu Township,1000-ton cold storage factories are built toconduct fish and prawn breeding, and softcrabs are being sent to markets.

As Taninthayi Division has a great deal ofvacant land, it is establishing oil palm plantationson a commercial scale and have built palm oilfactories. Its rich marine resources haveenabled the division to extend fishery andimprove the economy by sending marineproducts to markets.

The government has built economic, education, health and social foundations in allregions of the Union, including TaninthayiDivision. By enlisting the innovative strengthof the regional people alongside the State-builtinfrastructures, the entire nation will improveits economy for sure.

SOFIA, 4 April —A dead bird found near Bulgaria’s Black Sea port of Varnahas tested positive for the deadly H5N1 virus, officials said on Thursday.

The Agriculture Ministry said the tests on a common buzzard wereconducted at the national veterinary. No other cases of the highly pathogenicH5N1 strain of avian influenza were detected in Bulgaria, but farmers werealerted to the risks of transmission by migratory and wild birds. Two weeks ago,a bird flu outbreak was found at a backyard poultry farm in a village inneighboring Romania, and all its birds were killed.

The European Commission called it the first detection of bird flu in theEuropean Union in a year, following a confirmed case in March 2009involving a wild duck in Germany. Gregory Hartl, a World Health Organizationspokesman in Geneva, told The Associated Press on Thursday that he heardabout the bird flu cases in Bulgaria and Romania, but that WHO doesn’tconfirm or record bird flu cases unless they involve humans. Bird flu haskilled 291 people around the world since it began ravaging poultry stocks in2003, Hartl said, with Indonesia being the worst hit country. — Internet

A single grain of sesame is not enough toextract edible oil from it, but we can get enough edibleoil if we collect a huge number of grains of sesame. Now, the nation is in its transition to democracy, thuscalling for concerted efforts, broader views, thoughts, advice and knowledge from the entire people. I amglad to learn that now journals are featuring cartoons, articles, news stories and photos of historic events, processes and views about political affairs.

National brethren at the age of around 60across the nation passed that period. I don't thinkthere is much difference between characters, ways of thinking, diets, and parental managementof a person and that of another. They adhered tothe advice of their parents, and practised thrift intheir married life. At that time, the price of 10duck eggs was just one kyat, but on average, aportion of dish for a family member was just halfof a boiled duck egg.

No one can deny that the living standardof their children was better than theirs. In likemanner, their grandchildren enjoy better livingconditions and socio-economic status, with fineeducational institutions, clothes and utensils.Myanmar has seen a lot of positive changesduring the period.

However, under various circumstances andreasons, a small number of people migrate from ruralareas to towns, then to districts and then to capital NayPyi Taw and Yangon, and then to foreign countries insearch of greener pasture. In that regard, some ofthem are getting on with their businesses, whereassome are not. The former should not forget wherethey came from, and the latter should not consider thatto be a Myanmar citizen is to be shameful anddisappointing. They have to accept good results andevil consequences of their past deeds in line with theTeachings of the Buddha. They should not put blameon others, with a negative attitude to life. The morehardships they face the more intention they should

Share duties for better future of motherlandMi Pyi Chit

Observing theobjective conditions ofthe nation, all reliableyounger generationsshould have correctconcepts and convictionsto be able to chart aprosperous future of thenation.

turn to the Teachings of the Buddha and the more theyshould practise meditation.

That is supported by the Six SupremeQualities of the Dhamma, one of which says thatone can enjoy good returns practically if onefollows the Dhamma; and the next of which saysone doesn't have to wait to enjoy the fruits ofhonouring the Dhamma.

In Buddhism, there are the Three Refuges, the Five Infinite Venerables, Supreme Attributesof the Buddha, Supreme Attributes of theDhamma, and Supreme Attributes of the Sangha, parittas, gathas, ways of counting beads, andmethods of meditation.

All phenomena such as wealth, povertyand bad health are in connection with the Natureof Cause and Effect. In particular, one's innatenature can turn one's living status on its head. Onlywhen one acts with good volition can one enjoyfruitful results.

History reveals that there are many countriessuffering from one or two or all of the Three Catastrophesnamely famine, war and epidemics. As for Myanmarcitizens, Myanmar is the most suitable land to live in. Toput it another way, for them, there is no country likeMyanmar.

I wish those citizens who are now abroaddue to various reasons would take nationalinterest into consideration, viewing the objectiveconditions of the nation as they really are. AndI wish they would recognize the value of adorabletraditions, humanitarian spirit of the people, fresh air, waters and land, green vegetable fields, and beautiful natural sceneries of the nation.

So, each and every citizen is duty-boundto do their bit in the tasks for generating a betterfuture of the motherland. Sometimes, I have anostalgic look back at the past periods in whichour ancestors worked very hard and harmoniouslyto rise from the miseries. The people of us alsohave to do all what should be done in the interestof our younger generations.

Needless to say any alien does not loveMyanmar more than Myanmar people do. So, it isfair to say that any aliens cannot bring prospects tothe nation. Therefore, those who are under a dutyto create a prosperous future of the nation are noone other than Myanmar people. The entire peoplehave to play their roles in nation-building tasks. The people also have to work in collaboration forperpetual existence of the nation that is blessedwith favourable conditions for greaterdevelopment.

Every citizen should not think highly ofalien lifestyles, but should try to be able to lead aprosperous, peaceful and secure life.

In my opinion, the entire people have towork with a sense of duty in the interest of thenation in order that our posterities will be able toinherit fine legacy of stability, peace and prosperitythat have been achieved due to the efforts of ourforefathers.

(2) Observing the objective conditions ofthe nation, all reliable younger generations shouldhave correct concepts and convictions to be able tochart a prosperous future of the nation. In theprocess, they should imitate how Japan, Korea,China and Vietnam have worked for theirdevelopment. The people should lead a peacefullife, while serving the interest of the mother country,a land of impressive geographical features, finetraditions, cardinal virtues, and the Dhamma.

Each and every citizen is duty-bound,and the sectors in which they have to shouldertheir duties have been designated. Workinghard to accomplish the assigned duties is inspiredby a sense of patriotic spirit, and the spirit ofadoring and valuing the motherland.

If every citizen of a nation is educatedwith high reasoning power and a strong sense ofpatriotism, such a nation will be able to stand tallwith a prosperous future in the internationalcommunity as long as the world lasts.

I wish the mother country would seefurther flourishing of the sublime states of mind, and the entire people share joys and sorrows inrepulsing internal and external dangers and inbuilding a stable, peaceful, modern anddeveloped democratic nation.

- May the entire people show mutualrespect to one another and live throughthick and thin,

- May the cardinal virtues flourish!- May the entire people take care in doing

bodily, verbal and mental actions!- May the people work hard for a

prosperous future!- May the people work with physical and

mental well-beings to serve the interestof themselves, their society, the nationand the people!

- May the people become highly-educatedand good-hearted citizens with goodmorality and vast knowledge! In conclusion, the people are urged to

share duties with a sense of duty to chart abrighter future of the motherland.

BERLIN, 4 April — Few would have predictedsome years ago that the Arctic would become a boomregion — but that’s exactly what has happened.

Climate change is causing Arctic ice sheets to melt, with the oceans in the region possibly ice-free duringthe summer months. This is opening a new Atlantic-Pacific shipping channel and makes the natural re-sources lying under the seabed more accessible.

Nations have laid conflicting claims to theseabeds. Russia and Norway are disagreeing over apart in the Barents Sea that is poised to hold major oiland gas reserves. Worm gene could offer cluesto human aging

BIRMINGHAM, 4 April—A gene greatly involved in determining the life span ofa laboratory worm could offer clues to aging in people, researchers in Britain said.

The gene DAF-16 helps determine the rate of aging and the average life spanof Caenorhabditis elegans and its close evolutionary cousins, researchers at theUniversity of Birmingham said. The gene is found in many other animals, includ-ing humans, said researcher Robin May, who led the study.

May’s team compared longevity, stress resistance and immunity in four relatedspecies of worms. In general, high levels of DAF-16 activity correlated with longerlife, increased stress resistance and greater immunity against some infections.

Future studies will examine how DAF-16 coordinates a complex network ofgenes to balance the differing needs of an individual’s immune system over time,May said in Thursday’s edition of PLoS ONE.—Internet

rapamycin helped miceengineered to developAlzheimer’s to retainmemory, the same re-searchers said the drughelped an entirely differ-ent mouse model engi-neered to have earlyAlzheimer’s disease to re-member how to swim amaze.

“Rapamycin treat-ment lowered levels ofamyloid-beta-42, a majortoxic species of mol-ecules in Alzheimer’sdisease,” VeronicaGalvan, an assistant pro-fessor from the BarshopInstitute and the depart-ment of physiology at the

University of TexasHealth Science Center, said in a statement.

“These molecules, which stick to each other, are suspected to play akey role in the earlymemory failure of Alzhe-imer’s.”

The drug is producedby a bacterial product iso-lated from soil of EasterIsland and last year thesame researchers and col-leagues found rapamycinwas shown to extend lifein mice.

The current findingsare published in the jour-nal PLoS ONE.

TEL AVIV, 4 April—Astudy of 20,000 men ages18-21 in the Israeli armyfound those who smokedtended to have a lower IQ,Tel Aviv University re-searchers found.

Mark Weiser of theuniversity’s department ofpsychiatry and the ShebaMedical Center at TelHashomer Hospital foundyoung male smokers aremore likely to have lowerIQs than their non-smok-ing peers.

The study, published inthe journal Addiction, alsofound that in the casewhere one twin smoked,

the non-smoking twintested at a higher intelli-gence level.

“In the health profes-sion, we’ve generallythought that smokers aremost likely the kind ofpeople to have grown upin difficult neighbour-hoods, or who’ve beengiven less education atgood schools,” Weiser saidin a statement.

“But because our studyincluded subjects with di-verse socioeconomicbackgrounds, we’ve beenable to rule out socioeco-nomics as a major factor.”

STOCKHOLM, 4 April—Stone Age hunter-gather-ers who lived along thesouthern coast of Scandi-navia 4,000 years agowere unable to digestmilk, researchers said.

The findings support awidely held theory thatmodern Scandinaviansdescended from peoplewho arrived in the areaafter the Stone Age popu-lation.

Unlike modern

Scandinavians, the DNAof the hunter-gathersshows they were lactoseintolerant, said research-ers at Stockholm Univer-sity and Uppsala Univer-sity.

The ability to digestmilk is closely associatedwith the transitionfrom hunter-gathererpopulations to agricul-tural societies, said re-searcher AndersGotherstrom.

Gotherstrom is the co-ordinator of a EuropeanUnion-funded project fo-cusing on the signifi-cance of milk in Euro-pean prehistory.

“The findings areindicative of what wecall ‘gene flow,’ in otherwords, migration to theregion at some latertime of some newgroup of people, withwhom we are geneticallysimilar,” Gotherstromsaid.

KINGSTON, 4 April—Canadian researchersfound even toddlers no-tice and could rewardgood intentions.

Kristen Dunfield andValerie Kuhlmeier ofQueen’s University inKingston found childrenas young as 21 monthsold selectively helped theperson who had showngood intent.

“Some of the charac-teristics of the rich recip-rocal relationships ob-served in adults are inplace in infancy,”Dunfield and Kuhlmeiersaid in a statement.

The study, publishedin the journal Psycho-logical Science, reporteda toddler was more likely

to help someone showinggood intentions — evenif the person did not ac-complish a desired out-come.

In one experiment,Dunfield and Kuhlmeierintroduced toddlers totwo actresses — one whooffered a toy, put it on aslanted surface andshowed surprise whenthe toy rolled away. Theother actress showed thechild the toy, but thentook it away.

When the toddler wasput in the position of be-ing able to “return” a toy,it was most likely givento the actress showinggood intentions, the re-searchers said.

Hormone may aid gastric cancer patients

Coffee beans may become insecticidesCAMPINAS, 4 April—Brazilian scientists say they’ve found unroasted coffee

beans contain proteins that can kill insects — a finding that may lead to new foodcrop insecticides.

University of Campinas Professor Paulo Mazzafera said peas, beans and otherplant seeds contain proteins called globulins, which ward off insects and coffeebeans contain large amounts of globulins.

Although the high heat involved in roasting coffee beans destroys the globu-lins, Mazzafera said he and his team wondered whether the coffee proteins mightalso have an insecticidal effect.—Internet

OSAKA, 4 April—Japanese medical re-searchers say they iden-tified a protein that mighthelp reduce theincidence of malnutritionin gastric cancer pa-tients.

Scientists from OsakaUniversity’s School ofMedicine said gastric can-cer patients who have un-dergone surgery to removeall or part of their stomachoften suffer post-operativeweight loss. But the re-

searchers said they foundthe hormone ghrelinmight improve appetiteand provide otherbeneficial affects.

“Our study providesconvincing data for thebeneficial effects of ghrelin— the only gastrointestinalhormone known to stimulateappetite — on body weightand dietary activity after gas-trectomy,” said Dr. ShujiTakiguchi, the study’s leadauthor. “Although there aresome issues to be resolvedbefore clinical use, surgeonsdealing with gastric cancersand other gastroesophagealdiseases should be encour-aged by the availability ofghrelin.”

Significant step towardlightweight batteries

SCIENCE DAILY, 4 April — A team of research-ers at MIT has made significant progress on atechnology that could lead to batteries with up to threetimes the energy density of any battery that currentlyexists.

Yang Shao-Horn, an MIT associate professor ofmechanical engineering and materials science and engi-neering, says that many groups have been pursuing workon lithium-air batteries, a technology that has great potentialfor achieving great gains in energy density.
