NASA analyzing junk thatcould threaten astronautsCAPE CANAVERAL, 3 Sept— A massive piece of space

junk drifted toward the shuttle-station complex andits 13 astronauts Wednesday, though NASA officialssaid the threat would not delay an upcomingspacewalk.

Mission Control kept close tabs on the piece ofEuropean rocket because there was a chance, howeverunlikely, it could come too close or even hit the linkedspace shuttle Discovery and international space stationif their path is not altered. As of Wednesday night, the debris was expected to pass within two miles ofthe outpost Friday, said John McCullough, chief ofNASA’s flight director office.

That’s five miles closer than earlier projections, butit’s still “looking very positive” that the shuttle andstation will not have to dodge the junk. That’s becausewith every passing hour, there’s more accuracy onthe precise location of the spacecraft and debris,McCullough said.

AACHEN, 3 Sept—Timing of prolonged or-thopedic surgery maybe key in treating trau-ma patients, Germanresearchers suggest.

In an article publishedin the Journal of theAmerican Academy ofOrthopaedic Surgeons, researchers suggeststrauma patients who haveseveral orthopedicinjuries and areconsidered to be in

unstable condition shouldonly have a few hours ofsurgery when firstarriving at a hospital.

“If you limit theamount of time in theoperating room to lessthan three hours, patientsappear to do better,” studylead author Dr Hans-Christoph Pape of theUniversity of Aachen inGermany said in astatement. “If a patient haslife-threatening injuries

for example, more thanthree fractures and perhapsa lacerated liver, it is oftentoo dangerous to do all thesurgery right away.”

Pape and his colleaguesanalyzed data from severaltrauma registries inGermany and comparedpatient outcomes in about21,000 trauma patientswith the amount of hourseach patient had spent inthe operating room.

BEIJING, 3 Sept—The answer may be at hand to acrucial question about vaccination for the advancingswine flu — one shot or two? Chinese officialsapproved a vaccine on Thursday that they sayprevents the new flu in a single dose.If they’re right,it would be good news. Many health researchers fearit will take two shots to protect people, vastlycomplicating efforts to stem the spread of the illness.

The World Health Organization says it isencouraged after reviewing the test details from thevaccine by Beijing-based drug maker SinovacBiotech Ltd. — one of several being developed inChina. However, experts said more results areneeded from other vaccine makers to determine ifone dose would be potent enough.—Internet

Swine flu easily overtakesother strains

WASHINGTON, 3 Sept—Put swine flu in a roomwith other strains of influenza and it doesn’t mixinto a new superbug—it takes over, researchersreported on Tuesday.

University of Maryland researchers deliberatelyco-infected ferrets to examine one of the worst fearsabout the new swine flu. But fortunately, the fludidn’t mutate. The researchers carefully swabbedthe ferrets’ nasal cavities and found no evidence ofgene-swapping. The animals who caught both kindsof flu, however, had worse symptoms. And theyeasily spread the new swine flu, what scientistsformally call the 2009 H1N1 virus, to theiruninfected ferret neighbours — but didn’t spreadregular winter flu strains nearly as easily.—Internet
