Extend cultivation of globallymarketable beans and pulses

With its favourable geographicalconditions, Myanmar is marching towardsan industrialized nation based on agriculture. The cultivation acreage of the whole nationin 1988 was 19.9 million but it increased to29.32 million in 2008-2009. There were 1.8million acres of beans and pulses in 1998. Butthe acreage increased to 10.57 million in2008-2009, producing 5.33 million MT ofbeans and pulses.

Myanma beans and pulses are indemand in markets, so efforts are being madeto get the good price. In addition, cultivationof quality beans and pulses is being extendedfor export.

Myanmar is the leading exporter ofbeans and pulses among ASEAN countriesand is making coordinated efforts for ASEANnations to be able to boost production ofbeans and pulses.

Up to January, 2009-2010, 0.9 milliontons of beans and pulses were exported. Inthe past, Myanmar stood third in exportingbeans and pulses after Canada and Australia. But, it became the second biggest exporter in2000-2001, exporting 0.83 million tons.

Now, Myanmar is exporting 72 percentof the output of beans and pulses to India andthe remaining 28 percent to Indonesia,Singapore, Pakistan, Malaysia, Japan andsome Middle East countries.

By extending cultivation of marketablebeans and pulses, Myanmar can not onlyenjoy self-sufficiency but also exportsurpluses, thereby contributing to the familyincome and then to national economy.

LOS ANGELES, 4 April—USresearchers have uncovered a linkbetween genetic mutation andParkinson’s disease, according to astudy available here on Saturday.

The study, published in the latestissue of The Journal of Neuroscience, said that the researchers at the MountSinai School of Medicine made thediscovery in experiments usinggenetically engineered mice.

The mutation eliminates the normalfunction of a gene called LRRK2,resulting in inherited (familial)Parkinson’s, the most common formof the disease, according to theresearchers.

LRRK2 regulates the transmissionof dopamine, a neurotransmitter, andcontrols motor performance.

The mice created and used by theresearchers feature a key element ofParkinson’s disease — age-dependentreduction of dopamine — which is

believed to cause the motor functionproblems, such as tremors, rigidity, andinvoluntary movement experienced bypeople with Parkinson’s.

“While the mice are not at the stagewhere they experience the typicalsymptoms of Parkinson’s, like tremorsor reduced movement, we are able tostudy the potential root cause of thedisease in these mice,” said ZhenyuYue, an associate professor ofneurology and neuroscience at thecenter.

“Importantly, as we have developedassays that allow us to measure theenzymatic activity of LRRK2 in thebrain, the mouse models providevaluable tools in the preclinicaldevelopment of drug compounds thattarget aberrant LRRK2 activity. Thisresearch may translate to non-familialParkinson’s disease as well,” Yueadded.

LO S AN G E L E S , 5April—To reduce sodaconsumption in fightingchildren obesity willrequire larger taxes, anew study by RANDresearchers showed.

“If the goal is tonoticeably reduce sodaconsumption amongchildren, then it wouldhave to be a verysubstantial tax,” saidRoland Sturm, thestudy’s lead author anda senior economist atRAND, a nonprofi tresearch organization.

“A small sales taxon soda does not appearto lead to a noticeabledrop in consumption, letalone reduction inobesity.”

Taxes on soft drinksand other sugar-sweetened beverageshave been proposed aspart of many anti-obesi ty efforts todiscourage purchase ofthe high-calorie drinks

Larger taxes on soda drinks neededto help curb children obesity

so as to curb excessweight gain.

The researchersestimated the potentialeffect of soft drink taxeson children’sconsumption and weightby examiningdifferences in existingsales taxes on soft drinksbetween states.

The study involved73,000 children whoreportedly drank anaverage of six sodas perweek, but there waswide variation amongthe group.

Fif teen percentreported drinking nosodas in the prior week, while 10 percentconsumed two or moresodas per day. Theamount of sodapurchased at school wassmall.

The analysis couldfind no significant linkbetween theconsumption of soda orweight gain among

children and differentialtaxes on sodas versusother foods. Existingdifferential taxes (taxesthat are imposed onsodas and not other fooditems sold in grocerystores) are small ,averaging 3.5 percentand none are larger than7 percent.—Xinhua

Government,the people,Tatmadaw…

(from page 1)from his subordinates.Only then will it be possi-ble for him to win victoryall the times by applyingthe strength of his subor-dinates and his leadershipskills in combination. Asto the nature of the com-

bat leadership, subordi-nates place their trust andreliance on a victoriousleader with the confidencethat they can overcomeany forms of difficultiesand crises if they are withsuch a competent leader.

Basically, you willhave to possess all the 16characteristics of leader-ship to be able to take afirm leadership role. Moreover, you all have to

be well-experienced. Ex-perience is somethingfrom which you can learnlessons, risking life andlimb. A leader has to takelessons from others' ex-perience, as well as to seekand shoulder all the du-ties with a sense of dutyin order to have vast ex-perience. I would say amilitary leader must becapable of building theforce under your com-mand.Comrades,

In order to achieve

this goal, every regimentand serviceman have topossess five fundamentalrequirements: moraleconduct, self-discipline,loyalty, unity and beingendowed with three formsof calibre. You will haveto try to be noble-mindedwith fine traditions suchas having a strong senseof true patriotism, takingrisks in the interest of thenation and the people, and

sacrificing self-interest.You have to play an ex-emplary role in discipline. You have to remain loyalto the State and the peo-ple. You have to showloving-kindness, attach-ment and loyalty to oneanother. You must be ca-pable of building unityamong the members ofyour forces, and must beharmonious with the peo-ple.

Similarly, you mustmake sure that you your-selves and your subordi-

nates are always endowedwith three capabilities, namely military capabil-ity, organiazing capabil-ity, and administrative ca-pability. Only if every bat-talion and serviceman pos-sess five fundamentalqualifications can they seeto the major duties of theTatmadaw.Comrades,

Our Tatmadaw's threemajor duties are nationaldefence duty, militarytraining, and public wel-fare service.

Regarding the na-tional defence duty, to-day every country is mod-ernizing their armedforces. Today, the world

has seen rapid changes inscience and technology. So, the influence of geo-graphical conditions inwarfare such as weather, geographical features, transport, and supply hasbeen less important thanever. Therefore, we haveto make military reformsin order to catch up withthe modern warfare. Iwould deduce that wemust build a modernTatmadaw to be capableof defending our countryfrom any forms of dan-ger.

In the process, the na-

tion needs highly-quali-fied human resources. Therefore, you mustbroaden your horizons inwarfare to be able to copewith today's challenges. Moreover, you have to tryin the studies in thecourses at all levels youwill have to take.Comrades,

Regarding the dutyof military training, fun-damentally a militarycommander is, indeed, agood trainer. The majorobjective of this duty isto generate great quanti-tative progress. Beingwell-trained is one of theten strengths of theTatmadaw. So, the

Tatmadaw will be weak-ened if you are out ofmilitary training.

In that regard, youhave to train the forcephysically, theoreticallyand morally harmoni-ously and systemati-cally. If so, the force willalways be on full alertmilitarily, and will al-ways be ready for a com-bat. Therefore, we haveto constantly carry outmilitary training and im-proving the warfare sys-tem in building a mod-ern Tatmadaw.

(from page 8)Comrades,

Regarding the public welfare service,Tatmadaw members of us are the sons born of thepeople. We have taken a vow of sacrificing our livesto safeguard the nation and the people. Maybe youhave no opportunity to go to your natives, but youhave to regard everyone you come across every-where as your parents.

In the Anti-Fascist Resistance, our Tatmadawhad to disperse troops in the public and Tatmadawmembers were like family members of the people. We regarded the houses we stayed in as our parents'houses, and we treated them as though they were ourparents. In return, they took care of us, and weachieved formidable victories due to the participa-tion of the people. Therefore, I would like to urgeyou to take an active role in the public welfareservice as a gesture of being grateful to your parents.Comrades,

Our Tatmadaw is a patriotic force conceivedin the independence struggles. At that time,Tatmadaw members shouldered duties without sala-

ries and rations. Inspired by a noble-minded sense,we risked life and limb, and showed resilience, greatperseverance and self-discipline. In addition, wemanaged to face and overcome all forms of difficul-ties. Therefore, our Tatmadaw could stand as acapable force.

They are some of the Tatmadaw's fine tradi-tions. You have to hand down the 12 fine traditionsof the Tatmadaw to next generations. I would like tourge you to be good Tatmadaw members with thedetermination to preserve the fine traditions of theTatmadaw.Comrades,

We joined hands firmly with the people toregain independence. Our Tatmadaw is under a dutyto uphold independence and sovereignty in orderthat the nation will not lose them again. We all haveto remain loyal to all people and members of the

Sangha and Tatmadaw who fell in independencestruggles. So, our Tatmadaw has to repulse all formsof dangers that can harm independence and sover-eignty.

History shows that today certain powers hurtsmall countries' sovereignty through political, eco-nomic, social, dogmatic, and diplomatic ways. Andsometimes, they occupy their targeted countries. We have to take a valuable lesson from the historicevidence that when our nation was on the verge oflosing independence, colonialists put all the blameon our weak country.

So, we have to improve the political, eco-nomic and defence strengths if we wish to ensuresovereignty. In its time, the Tatmadaw has beenimproving the infrastructures with the aim of build-ing a peaceful, modern and developed nation and

strengthening the three capabilities of the nation.Comrades,

In the meantime, the Tatmadaw has been en-gaging in public welfare service, and working hardto introduce the political system based on the State'sseven-step Road Map as well as the market economy.

In the nationwide referendum to approve theState Constitution of the Union of Myanmar as thefourth step of the Road Map, internal and externalelements attempted to disrupt the referendum bypersuading the people not to cast votes or to cast"no" votes. However, the referendum was success-fully completed due to the combined efforts of thegovernment, the people and the Tatmadaw, and theconstitution was approved with the massive supportof the people.

This year, elections will be held to elect rep-resentatives to parliaments in accordance with the

constitution. The government, the people and theTatmadaw will see to the elections. So, you all haveto keep your eyes and ears to potential dangers thatmay be posed with foreign aids.Comrades,

In conclusion, I would like to urge you:- to lead a life of a good Tatmadaw member and

try your best to become dynamic leaders,- to shoulder the three major duties of the

Tatmadaw,- to build a strong, efficient and capable patri-

otic Tatmadaw to guard the motherland andthe people against any forms of dangers,

- to ward off all dangers intended to harm inde-pendence and sovereignty,

- to relay the 12 fine traditions of the Tatmadaw.MNA

Sneaking in some exercise effectiveUNIVERSITY PARK, 5 April—Unintentional activity

can help people burn a few extra calories, US research-ers suggest.

David Conroy, an associate professor of kinesi-ology and human development and family studies atPennsylvania State University, said unintentionalphysical activity—such as climbing stairs instead ofwaiting for the elevator—helps prevent weight gain.

“It wasn’t the overall level of activity we focusedon, it was specifically the unintentional activity—those little things that you don’t even think about thathelp you burn those extra few calories,” Conroy saidin a statement.

Conroy and colleagues examined 200 college stu-dents for a connection between attitudes toward physi-cal activity and levels of unintentional activity.

Fat clue to triggering latent tuberculosis

Macrophages infected withMycobacterium tuberculosis that have

been transformed to express the redfluorescent protein.—INTERNET

SCIENCEDAILY, 5 April—Thefactors instrumental in triggeringlatent tuberculosis (TB) infectionto progress into active diseasehave long remained elusive toresearchers. New insight into themystery is provided by ProfessorDavid Russell, speaking at theSociety for GeneralMicrobiology’s spring meetingin Edinburgh. His work couldhelp develop innovativestrategies for treating the disease.

Professor Russell and hisgroup at Cornell University in

New York, USA, havedemonstrated that TB-causingbacteria are able to hijack fatmetabolism in the host to drivethe progression of the disease. The team’s research shows thatMycobacterium tuberculosis(Mtb) is able to stimulatemacrophages — the immune cellsthe bacterium infects — toaccumulate fat droplets, turningthem into “foamy” cells. Thiscellular transformation can triggera reawakening of the TB infectionfrom its latent state.—Internet
