• Landfilling (pollution, limited capacity, new regulations)
• Thermal Solutions- Incinerators : (expensive, public opposition, needs 24/7 waste flow);- Gasification + Plasma + Pyrolysis (expensive, no references, laboratory
facilities);- Refuse Derived Fuel (treats the dry materials only, not the organics);
• Mechanical Biological Treatment- Dry separation + Aerobic composting or Anaerobic Digestion (no real
separation, low compost quality, no ROI, failures).

Composting:• No energy production;• Fits to highly pre separated organic waste;• Usually poor quality compost – no demand.MBT AD:• Fits pre separate waste;• Standard anaerobic digesters enable ~50% energy recovery;• Limited success with MSW.

How can we improveHow can we improvethe MSW treatment?the MSW treatment?
• Minimizing residual – high separation and recovery capabilities – Directive compliance
• Maximum waste usage – high energy output• Control outlets quality – Increase plant value – Meets local
regulation• High availability and flexible waste feed• Low cost maintenance and operation

Minimize:• The landfilling of waste;• The pollution;• The disposal costs.Maximize:• The recycling rate;• The MSW drift rates;• The production of renewable energy.Use an Alternative Advanced technology:• That reduce costs;• That reduce CO2 emissions;• Simplifies sorting and process flow by liquefying the waste;• A unique multistage anaerobic treatment.

Separation Separation
SEDIMENTATION:• Suspended solids with specific gravity greater than
that of water tend to settle down by gravity.- force of gravity: Fg=ρpgVp
- buoyant force: Fb=ρgVp
- Low rate laminar flow ≈ 0.05m/sec
BUBBLE ADDITION:• Micro bubbles nucleation on particle surface to
increase the buoyant force of light materials;• Higher separation rate;• Optimizing separation performance.
– Assumptions:• Fine bubble - 20 to 50 micron;• Non turbulence flow.

Multistage anaerobic systemMultistage anaerobic system
• A single anaerobic element is not sufficient to address the task;• Therefore, an inline multi-reactors design is needed, each stage not only acts
as a digester/separator but also prepares the material for the following treatment;
• Maximize organic usage (about 90% utilisation to produce biogas).

Stages of Anaerobic SystemStages of Anaerobic System
1° Smart Anaerobic Stage - Hydrolysis - Braking large organic polymers chains into smaller monomers and dissolve them into solution; the complex organic molecules are broken down into simple sugars, amino acids, and fatty acids
2° Anaerobic Digester - Acetogenesis - converts the products of the first phase to simple organic acids (acetic, propionic, butyric acid and ethanol); Generation of bio-gas ≈ 25%; Solid content digester (5-10%);
3° High rate reactor (UASB) - Methanogenesis -
N.R.E. research - Area Science Park Trieste – Italy [email protected]. research - Area Science Park Trieste – Italy [email protected]
Converts the acetic acid and ethanol into methane and carbon dioxide - Biogas.
• Over 90% organic load reduction• 3 phase separation:- Biogas;- Effluent (waste water);- Solid (sludge).

What about the WATER?What about the WATER?
• The water of the plant works in closed-circuit;
• After the biological treatment the excess water passes through acleaning aerobic treatment (SBR) which improves its quality (BOD <50 ppm).
• After purification the excess water can be used to clean the system, containers , or other uses depending by national and local regulations.
• The amount of excess water is rather low: amounts to approximately 5% of the organic material input.
